BBURGOURGOSSBurgos is a pleasant, vital, medium-sized city (170.000 inhabitants), situated in the North-central part of Spain in the region of Castilla-León. The urban core area is 108,26 km2 and a population of 15,84 hb/ha. The agglomeration
area has an extension of 175 km2 with 248.000 inhabitants.
Burgos is well known world-wide because of its cultural, monumental, and artistic heritage. Before the Romans invaded the territory of Burgos, there were already signs of life from prehistoric man in the area, as has been
highlighted in the important discoveries made in Ojo Guareña and Atapuerca, just a few kilometres from the city, where one of the most important archaeological sites in the world is being safeguarded for the study of human
evolution. The history of the city of Burgos dates back to the 10th century.
Burgos enjoys a privileged geographical position being located half way between Madrid and the French border, with cities such as Bilbao, Santander, Logroño and Valladolid nearby. Due to this, it is well linked with the rest of Spain
which has a high strategic value for industry in Burgos which is varied and dynamic and characterised by companies of importance on a European and World scale.
Burgos is a medium city which allows living together in a space of sustainability, urban growing and industrial development.
SSince its foundation, the city of Burgos has had two periods clearly defined of urban development. In the 1st period, the city grew round the Castle and the Cathedral, at the North of the ArlanzónRiver. In the 2nd period (in the last century), the city began to grow following the course of the river. Today, it is possible to say that the river is the principal vertebrate element of the city.
TThe future of the city will depend on the development of free spaces that due their location or spaciousness can constitute the place for new elements of excellence. These spaces, which are in period of development, are the “Solar de Caballería” where the Evolution Museum is situated like Centrum for the Atapuerca investments and knowledge; the land of the train station/railway and his boulevard; Villafría which is a neighbourhood where the Enterprise park could situated with the technological centre and the dry port or logistic inter-modal centre, the Historical Centre in phase of renovation and restoration or the area of Villatoro as possible area for infrastructures of spare time.
TThe following map shows the principal elements and areas of development for the city that are being developed or studied paving the way for the city of Burgos in the horizon of 2015: Atapuerca, Railway Boulevard, Green-Blue Corridor or Santiago’s Way.
Burgos approved its actual Urban Planning in 1999 and Local Agenda 21 and its Strategic Planning in 2002.
Mobility Planning was approved in 2004, and we belong to CIVITAS II Initiative since February 2005.
Burgos has developed many measures related to mobility as first implementation of access restriction in pedestrian areas (City Centre), Bicycle lanes all over the City, as well as other important measures like incorporation of CNG buses or our bus lane.
