Katherine L., Tenant of Lincoln Park Red Complex, CHC…

Dear neighbours,

When I first moved into Lincoln park, into an intentional housing unit called Casa Pluma, I had no idea what to expect and the extent to which this community would bless me and change my life.

What’s an intentional housing unit you ask? Its simply a regular unit where the occupants have decided to make an effort to get to know their neighbours, encourage community development, and grow and learn with their community. There is so much isolation in Calgary. Many people don’t know their neighbours and some rarely leave the house. Living intentionally with your neighbours can simply mean you chat with them briefly in passing, you ask to borrow a cup of sugar, watch their kids, or have a monthly dinner. These habits have been found to lower crime in communities as well as give you opportunities to make life long friends – and that’s exactly what happened to me.

My very first day in the community was already out of the ordinary. Two minutes into unloading all my boxes to move in, one of the neighbours who knew my roommates asked me to watch her son while she quickly ran errands. As I held her baby boy in my arms, I knew that this was a special community of residents who treated each other like family. Since then I have met so many amazing neighbours with incredible stories: leaders in the community who have demonstrated a great passion and sacrifice for making their community a better place. Since the creation of Casa 5 years ago, we have seen isolated and timid residents grow to become motivated leaders and passionate advocates for their community. You cannot find another community quite like Lincoln Park.

On May 23rd, the roommates of Casa Pluma and friends in the community got together to celebrate my last week living in Lincoln Park. We shared stories about the biggest blessings living here and reflected on what we have all learned. Someone asked, “Has living in the community changed your life?” My answer is absolutely. I have seen first hand how taking that courageous step in introducing yourself to others and building relationships with them no matter how different you are from each other, can change your perspective, inspire you, and bless you with priceless moments. Of course it has its messy moments, hurts, and vulnerabilities, but I think it was worth it in the end.

I will deeply miss this community and the amazing people who have taught me and inspired me. I will miss the stories of how residents have persevered through the hardest of challenges, being able to grow with and encourage each other, the fun events that Bethany Chapel, Roni, and others have put on, the kids playing hide and go seek in our house, the many tea times with neighbours to catch up and dream about the future, and so many more priceless moments.

Many people come and go from Lincoln Park, but I hope that during their stay they will feel welcomed and accepted and build life long relationships, as I have. All it takes is for you to say hello to someone you don’t know, and you could be changing your life.

Many thanks to the amazing residents who make this community so great.

I will miss you, Katherine (Former Resident of Lincoln Park)

Editors Note… Question Poll for the neighbourhood. So apparently the siding did not go on as planned it was to go blue grey, blue grey extra. However one side is fully blue and the other is fully grey. (it’s not brown) The way the neighbourhoods used to be spoke about was blue and red. Even though red also has yellow and the blue also had white units. So instead of stating blue, grey and or red when talking. I think we make this into a contest!! Because I’m already getting confused and I really don’t want to refer my side as blue and grey or the grey blue side! We could call each side a name like L.P. super south in meaning the blue houses. Or call the blue units odds and the grey units even for the simple fact for some reason all the blue units have odd numbers and and the grey units have even. But I am curious and to let you all have to say and think.

Tracey our Tenant liaison has had worries that the newsletter was ending. I reassured her I was going to continue writing it and not to worry. However I was hiding something…But I was able to fix my problem! This month something new will be happening with the newsletter, well the deliver of it. I have asked for help on handing it out by someone I trust! I love writing the newsletter and can’t wait for it being printed. However handing it out to everyones mailbox is my biggest dread of the month, that I have had in the last few months. I sometimes completely put it off. But I’m happy I have found someone to help me with handing them out. It may not seam hard but I’ve handed out the newsletter every month to over 150 units for 28 months, takes a toll.

Also unconcern’s to this newsletter That I hope can finally be resolved because the rumours need to stop. I have never been and never will be paid to do this newsletter! I’m not sure how to word it for residents to truly understand. I get nothing for making this newsletter for you to read. However I really do this completely out of my passion of writing and because I enjoy putting it together every month.

Odd perhaps to ask only for those who get the newsletter in hard copy (not emailed) did you take notice how soft the pages felt? I was pretty impressed myself. But I mainly really liked how the great the newsletter looked. the pictures were so vibrant and it looked amazing all together. You must Thank Tracey for that!

Also if you do not want this newsletter in your mailbox monthly please let CHC know and it will stop showing up. Plus by doing so you will help us save paper. However if you would like the newsletter but just note in your mailbox but rather emailed I can send it to you in a PDF format. By doing this you will no longer receive one in your mailbox. Some do get it in their emails due to personal choice, always on the go but really enjoy reading it. Although I hope you like this month’s read. It’s full of great information that I have found or been asked to put in. If there is anything you would like to add to any newsletter just email me and I’ll do what I can to put it in!! A reminder though, that everything has to be approved by Calgary Housing and I need it by the 20th of every month or sooner.

Unit 4554 in the red complex, will no longer be taking submissions for this monthly newsletters.

~ Veronica (Roni), Tenant of Lincoln Park Calgary Housing.

It is official!!The new resource

room renovations are complete

We will be starting our move over next week and will be making the official move to programming thereafter. Please watch for posters in the community on both doors and display boxes.

The room turned out beautiful thanks to our good friends at Home Depot.

It will provide us with more space and an open kitchen. Even better than that it is accessible so those with mobility issues can now come and join in our programming and activities!

We will be having an open house on Friday July 27th. Watch for the invite.

What’s UNIT #36

UNIT 75 IS OF NO MORE AS OF MID JUNE UNIT 75 HAS MOVED TO TO UNIT #36 LINCOLN WAY SW.

In case you are wondering what now unit 36 is or

when you hear some one say "unit 75" and your thinking what?? It’s a

slight thing of the past. Only because now it’s

moved. It is still a unit in blue/grey housing side but

now its on the even number side. The grey side

to be exact. Calgary Housing Company has a

unit for residents and organizations to come and

use for programs and activities for people within this community. Some of

Calgary Housing communities don't have

one. But we do!! CHC calls it a resource centre but

residents will probably call it unit 36.

It is where Touch Base, Boys and Girls Club, West Central Resource Centre, knitting circle, food bank

depot, Psychologist counselling, are held.

Threads is located in one of the bedrooms.

Its also were some tenant lead events are held, like the Halloween Haunted

House, Santa’s Workshop and more!

Casa Pluma House… It is with a sad heart that I announce that the lovely ladies of Casa Pluma House are officially moving out. We have been blessed to have them live intentionally in our community for such a long period of time. However, like everything in life people grow and move forward in their personal endeavours.

I can honestly say that our Lincoln Park Calgary Housing Community has been a better place by having them with us. They have made a difference too many of us over the years by offering their friendship, volunteerism, home, conversation and oh so much more. I am sure that while the women move forward in their lives and goals they will continue to touch the lives of those around them as they have affected so many of ours in such a positive way.

Due to the hard work and success over the years the women in Casa Pluma have shown us at CHC we are working hard at replacing the women so that we may fill the void they will leave. At this time I am unable to tell you when that will happen exactly. What I can tell you is, that it is a priority to Tim and I and we are working hard to achieve this with a different partner.

I promise to keep you updated.

Sincerely,

Tracey McLean-Schultz

Barley Grass Juice Powder… It’s not common knowledge, barley grass juice powder contains carotene, vitamins B1, B2 and B12, iron, magnesium and amino acids, as well as important enzymes that your body simply craves for. And before you ask, no, barley grass does not contain gluten.

This supplement contains vitamins A, B1, B2, B3, B6, B12, C, E, and K. It also has beta carotene, pantothenic acid, and folic acid. It has minerals such as calcium, iron, potassium, magnesium, organic sodium, and phosphorus. Finally, it also boasts of amino acids, chlorophyll, fibre, protein, and enzymes.

We hurt our bodies by eating eating junk food which either is because we are stressed or by not finding the time to make a healthy meal. Thankfully, one of the biggest barley grass benefits is that it’s a natural detoxifier especially when it comes to our liver. An over-worked liver that is not properly cleansed will begin to cause issues from lethargy, memory loss, breakouts/acne, headaches and anxiety are just a few. By using a natural remedy that doesn’t negatively affect any aspect of our health.

Due to stress, medical drugs, food additives, low immunity and even radiation, our DNA can change. This change can lead to many different problems. There are studies that say putting Barley grass in your diet can reverse these DNA changes that may have occur.

Barley Grass leaves are extremely alkaline, so digesting them can help keep the body's alkaline and acidity ratio balanced. Barley grass may be just what you need if you are finding it tough to keep your blood sugar levels under control. Studies have found that barley can help reduce fasting blood sugar levels and also suppress a spike in your blood sugar levels after meals.

Barley grass rids harmful heavy metals from the body. Trying to stay on a strict no-sweets diet, but can’t seem to fight your sweet tooth. Adding barley grass juice is effective in fighting addictions, such as craving for coffee, alcohol, drugs, nicotine, and yes, sweets. Its because of the glutamic acid.

Here is a small list of other things it can help with.

Improves skin health Can aid in weight loss Supports immune system Helps control blood sugar Promotes bone health Reduces excess acidity Fights constipation Contains protective antioxidants Helps joint pains Helps fight addictions May help ulcerative colitis Increase energy levels High alkalinity and so much more

You can eat barley grass raw, which means you can add it to any salad, meals or take it in a shot with water. If you’re a smoothie enthusiast like me, you can add barley grass powder to the blender. I personally take barley grass juice powder 2 tablespoons in my smoothies. There is a strong taste but I know its helping my body.

It has helped with many ways, my memory, gives me energy and mostly sugar cravings. I wake up every morning craving chocolate. If I stay consistent with drinking barley grass I have less cravings. I am not sure if its helping with other things. I just know besides the taste I love the benefits its giving my body. There are mentions it helps even more things then I have listed so look it up and see if its right for you! However since I am not a doctor, I just love natural remedies. It always recommended you discuss with your Doctor or Naturopath Practitioner. ~ Veronica (Roni), Tenant of Lincoln Park CHC.

Vegan Mushroom Stroganoff

Total Time: 30 minutes. Serves: 4

“Nobody can believe this broth is gluten-free, vegan (dairy-free and egg-free), kosher, and low in carbs and salt. It tastes just like homemade beef broth. It is a triumph and a gift to vegetarians!”

Ingredients: • 1 (12oz/340g) pack gluten-free fettuccini • 1/4 cup (60ml) grape seed oil or extra-virgin olive oil• 1 cup (150g) diced yellow onion• 1 tablespoon minced garlic (3 cloves)• 6 cups (540g) sliced white button and cremini mushrooms• 2 cups (480ml) Massel beef-flavored broth• 1 cup (140g) raw unsalted cashews, soaked and drained• 3 tablespoons wheat-free tamari• 1 tablespoon finely chopped fresh thyme (not dried)• 1 teaspoon Massel beef-flavored seasoning powder• 1 teaspoon Dijon mustard• 1 teaspoon balsamic vinegar• 1 teaspoon fresh lemon juice• 1/4 teaspoon freshly ground black pepper, plus more to taste• 1/4 cup (12g) finely chopped flat-leaf parsley, plus more to serve• 2 tablespoons finely chopped chives, plus more to serve

Instructions: 1. Cook the pasta according to the package instructions. Drain the pasta, and set aside.2. In a large skillet over medium-high heat, warm 1 tablespoon of the oil, and sauté the onion and

garlic for about 5 minutes, until soft and translucent. Add the mushrooms and the remaining oil, and sauté for 5 to 10 minutes, until the mushrooms are just softened. Remove from the heat and set aside.

3. Pour the Massel beef-flavored broth, cashews, tamari, thyme, seasoning powder, mustard, balsamic vinegar, lemon juice, and pepper into your blender, and blast on high for 30 to 60 seconds, until smooth and creamy. Add about 1 cup (180g) of the cooked mushroom mixture, and pulse a few times on a very low speed just to break up the mushrooms slightly. (You want a speckled, grainy consistency, not a puree.)

4. In a large saucepan over medium-low heat, pour in the blended cashew-broth-mushroom mixture and the textured cooked mushroom-and-onion mixture, and stir for a few minutes until heated through. Add the cooked pasta, parsley, and chives, and stir together until well combined.

5. Season to taste, and serve family-style in a big bowl garnished with additional parsley and chives, or portion into individual bowls, and garnish with the herbs.

Waldorf Salad Serves 4

“Use this crunchy apple for a lunch time salad and its gluten free”

Ingredients: 1/2 cup walnuts halves

1/2 cup yogurt (non-dairy or regular)

2 tablespoons light mayonnaise

2 tablespoons minced fresh flat-leaf parsley

1 teaspoon honey

1/2 lemon, zest finely grated

Freshly ground black pepper

2 large crisp apples, such as Gala

2 ribs celery sliced

1/4 cup golden raisins

1/2 lemon, juiced

1 head Boston lettuce, trimmed, washed, and dried

Instructions: Spread the nuts in a frying pan and toast for 8 to 10 minutes or until brown and fragrant. Cool and break the nuts up into small pieces.

Whisk the yogurt, mayonnaise, parsley, honey, and lemon zest in a large bowl and season generously with pepper.

Halve, core, and cut the apples into 3/4-inch pieces, leaving the skin intact.

Add the apples, celery and raisins to the bowl, and sprinkle with the lemon juice; then toss with the dressing. Cover and refrigerate.

When ready to serve, toss walnuts into the salad. Arrange the lettuce leaves on a large platter, or divide them among 4 salad plates. Place the salad on the lettuce and serve.
