From the Mayor’s Desk – continued 1st Annual Luna Pier Bootleggers & Blues Festival Saturday July 23rd in Memorial Park from Noon to 10:00 pm. Here is the lineup with tentative starting times: 12:00 pm HoozierDaddy 2:30 pm Bobby G 4:00 pm Greg Nagy 5:45 pm Eric Goebel And Headliner… 7:30 pm Thornetta Davis

The cost of the event is FREE, although plan to patronize the food venders and beer tent for a reasonable cost. Parking will be located at the Luna Pier Mason School for a minimal cost with shuttles available for no additional cost. We will offer a grill area for those who wish to bring a grill to cook their own BBQ. We insist that there be no tents or umbrellas to block others views and if you bring your pet make sure it is on a leash and well behaved. I cannot express the importance of this event in attracting new business to our City so we can shift our dependence on Consumer’s to diversify our tax base. The DDA has done their best to keep the festival centralized so as to not disturb the lifestyle we are accustomed to day to day. I hope that everyone will be positive concerning the event and if problems arise feedback will be constructive in helping us organize the event in the future.

We are grateful to the sponsors included so far; The City of Luna Pier, Michigan Gas Utilities, Pepsi, Monroe Bank & Trust, Monroe Tourism Bureau, Luna Pier Storage, Mercy Memorial Hospital of Monroe, Mr. Krausman, owner of the L P Post Office.

Flood & Erosion Committee June 2011

First I would like to welcome Darrell Adams from the Venice Canal area. Darrell is forming

the Venice Canal subcommittee. Please contact

Darrell if you are interested in helping with Venice Canal issues.

Our USDA loan has some issues to work thru and has not yet been approved. We are waiting on this loan prior to starting any work on our pumps.

The dredging applications are pending council approval; Venice Canal Gate information and procedure is still pending; our dike walks have been cancelled several times due to weather and the Corp of Engineers plan on walking the dike on July 5th in the morning.

Our monthly meetings have now been changed to the 3rd Tuesday of each month except for July. Hope to see more of our Luna Pier residents on July 20th at 7 PM at City Hall. Please come join us!

We still are looking for another member of our committee. Please submit your interest in writing to City Hall or to Sue Lopes at [email protected].

Dear Kids Day Volunteer:

I appreciate your willingness to volunteer for Kids Days on August 27, 2011. The theme this year is, “Animal Planet”. I think it will be a festive exciting event. We have included many of our signature events like the cardboard boat races and dance. I am working to coordinate the overall schedule, but I still need many more volunteers to cover all the events. If you know anyone please invite them to participate, especially helpful for high school students in need of service hours.

I would like to meet on Wednesday July 27th at 7:00 pm for a brief meeting in Council Chambers. I will provide everyone with an events calendar and map. I need everyone’s t shirt sizes so I can place our order. We will also arrange for a pick up place just before the event to get everyone’s t-shirts delivered.

Thank you; call me at 734-848-6495 if you cannot attend.

Sincerely, Mayor Mary A. Liske

Kids Day Bike Parade

August 27th, Noon Meet at Water Tower Park

Decorate your Bike Theme; Animal Planet

Cardboard Boat Race

Location, beach, 5:00 -6:00 pm 2011 Theme

“Animal Planet”

As a part of the day’s events the City is sponsoring a cardboard boat race. Prizes will be awarded to winners. In order to enter you must be between 10 – 18 years of age and register at City Hall. Parents will need to sign a waiver for contestants under the age of 18.

A. The following information is important: 1. A team can have up to four people on it. 2. Only one member of the team can be in

the boat during the race. 3. The racing member MUST wear a life

jacket. 4. Hands are used for paddles, ONLY!

B. Examples of boats: 1. Be creative 2. Ideas from past races, pontoon boat,

aircraft carrier. MUST be a boat, NO surfboards allowed

C. Tips and Suggestions: 1. A cubic foot of water weighs 62lbs, so a

one foot x 3 foot boat should carry a 180 lb. person.

2. Make sure you can get the boat out the door of the place you are building it.

3. Corrugated cardboard is a must. Try putting one layer of cardboard in one direction and a second layer in the opposite direction on top of the first.

4. Materials permitted are; duct tape, corrugated cardboard, and spray paint.

5. May want to make a manila folder model first.

6. A flat bottom boat is best with the lowest center of gravity being the most stable by being seated. Standing or kneeling causes tipping.

Sand Castle Contests August 27, 2010 1:00 – 2:00 pm Public Beach Area

Tips to building your castle include building your sandcastle near the water, but not too close. The waves will destroy your castle as the tides rise. Dig a hole to the water table where you'll find the sand is dark and moist. Scoop wet sand onto the center of the area where you're building your castle. Work fast so the sand stays wet. Build towers by forming and stacking sand patties about the size and shape of thick pancakes. Place larger patties on the bottom, and gently shake the patties from side to side as you pile them so that the sand settles. Seal your towers by gently pouring water over them or spraying with a spray bottle filled with water. Wet sand is easiest to work with. Straws are popular for dusting your creation and a variety of tools help refine shapes, big plastic sandcastle sets that work fine for beginner.

Rules 1. Teams of 2 are permitted, but a single

person may compete 2. No adults may assist at any time 3. MATERIALS: only sand, lake water and

other natural materials from the lake which are found on the day of the event and onsite may be used. Hair spray, paste-like substances or food coloring will not be permitted.

4. TOOLS - any hand tools are permitted including shovels, buckets or vessels of water. Molds are acceptable, but forms will not be permitted

5. Registration the day of the event, at the registration table located at 1st Street Park, by 12:30 or before the 29th at City Hall

6. Have FUN! There will be prizes for 2 age groups

Elementary School K-5 Jr. High & High School 6-12

(The grade you will be entering in the fall) Prizes in the following areas

Difficulty of Design (Height, delicate areas, arches, consistency)

Creativity (Originality & imagination)

Building Department

Property maintenance remains a big concern to area residents. When structures are not properly maintained it affects the public health, safety and general welfare, as well as, the aesthetic value of community at large and can have a direct effect on property values. It is our duty to ensure that all residents, including our tenants, are living in safe conditions. Further, many repairs, furnaces, water heaters, changes to electric service, etc. are being installed improperly, without permits, creating unsafe and hazardous conditions. The IPMC was adopted to correct unsuitable conditions and to establish mechanisms for continued maintenance of structures thereby promoting health, safety, and welfare of the community and the residents. In 2007 the City Council adopted the International Property Maintenance Code and the Building Department has been enforcing it on a complaint basis. Please visit the Building Department page of our web site for more info

A Big Thanks to the Park and Recreation Committee The Parks and Recreation Committee is working hard this summer to be able to provide ice skating this winter at the pond in Water Tower Park. Their hard work and the volunteers that are working to make it happen deserve our thanks. First Betty Roper, thanks for your tireless efforts. Betty has talked to numerous folks in the community and come up with a shed, labor and materials to build an entrance, and received dozens of skates to be used by the children. I know I will forget some folks, but here goes. Thanks to Ted Beck, John and Gayle Burlin, Mary Jan Ford, Jim Ginther, Michaeline Hannum, Lisa Kring, Steve and Debbie Lay, Rosalie Lewis, Bill and Theresa Miller, Phyllis Petee, Rebecca Roper, Randy and Maurene Wagner, Gary and Sandy Wilmoth, Harold St John, Sylvania Tam O Shanter, The Bedford Lions Club (Lion’s Den), Lowes, and Star Towing The Parks and Recreation group is also moving forward on a mural for downtown and working to connect with other communities via walking trails. The committee, Cindy Zohn-Conyers, Linda Emptage, Ric Murry, Mary Ansel, Don Masztak, and Betty Roper are doing a great job, when you see em’ tell them thanks.

RESIDENTS’ PARKING PERMIT Just a reminder to Luna Pier residents that you are allowed to park in the beach and pier areas at no charge provided you secure and display a resident parking permit on the front of the inside rear view mirror of your vehicle. Resident parking permit stickers are available at Luna Pier City Hall at no charge. However, your vehicle’s registration is required to receive your permit. DPW News Superintendent Randy Whipple In years past we have had problems with residents mowing their grass into the

streets. According to Ordinance #15, Section 5.13, this is illegal. Please refrain from doing this. Not only will it make the streets look better, but it will also keep the storm drains open. Also, if you have a storm drain near your residence, please keep it free from debris so the water drains quickly.

Burn Pile – The pile is for tree and yard trimmings (no grass) and is located by the boat ramp parking lot. It is for city residents only. Please do not place wood with nails or other trash on this pile. We could lose the burn pile if it is abused. Help us police and maintain what we have.

Dumpster available - Year around the city has a dumpster located behind the wastewater treatment plant. State law prohibits the disposal of tree trimmings, leaves, grass or any other vegetation to be buried in landfills. Therefore, disposal of these materials are not allowed in dumpsters. PLEASE DO NOT LITTER! PLACE ALL MATERIALS INSIDE DUMPSTERS! The gates are open 7 am until 3:15 pm during the week. Holiday and weekend hours vary between 6 am and 1 pm. Call 848-4581 to make sure the gates are open. The dumpster is emptied on Tuesday and Friday. If the dumpster is full before empty day, the rear gate will be locked until it is emptied. These dumpsters are NOT intended for non-resident, commercial or contractor use. DO NOT LEAVE PAINT CANS, CHEMICALS, TIRES OR LP TANKS IN THIS AREA. THE CITY HAS NO WAY OF DISPOSING OF THESE ITEMS.

Compost Pile – There is a compost pile located on the northwest corner of the parking lot at the boat ramp. This pile is for grass and leaves ONLY. Please remove the grass and leaves from the plastic bags or containers. Thank you!

Used Motor Oil – Used motor oil may be disposed of at the city’s maintenance garage. Please call Randy or Bryan at 848-8481 for further information.

Residents of Luna Pier have unlimited curbside trash pick-up!
