EEddiittoorriiaallAmbivalent view of student protests
The current student protestsagainst tuition fee increase have gonelong enough. As the impassecontinues, the public’s patience isbeginning to wane as well as theirsympathy. It seems that the studentswill not settle for anything less thanwhat they wanted which is to have noincrease at all. At issue is also thegovernment’s passage of Bill 78 thatrestricts student demonstrations.
Critics of the governmentcertainly side with the students butthose who are inconvenienced by thenumerous disturbances caused by thestudents’ tactics to disrupt economicactivities in the city are not so pleased.Besides the fact that the tuition feesthey are paying are the lowest inCanada and in North America, thegovernment has already offered themmany concessions and adjustments tothe increase which will not preventpoor students from pursuing highereducation. So what is it that they reallywant?
It would seem that all theywanted was to keep the tuiition feefrozen as they believe education is aright, not a privilege. They point outthat the government can find themoney to finance education if it sodesires as there is a lot of waste inanything financed by the public purse.Thinking that the protest would justfizzle out, the government did not reactpromptly. When it did, it was probablytoo late as the problem has beencompounded by the passage of Bill 78which has been declaredunconstituitonal by most legal experts.
Negotiations have beenattempted and broken down a fewtimes. Students never wanted to
budge from their position while thegovernment tried to offer someadjustments, like spreading the feehike over seven years instead of fiveyears, decreasing the amount to $325per year, Even with this increase,Quebe students will still pay 30% lowerthan anywhere else. In addition tothis offer, the ceiling for family incomehas been raised to allow more studentsto borrow money and receivebursaries. Yet, the students stillrefused the offers presented to them.
There is a mixed reaction tothe student protests - on one side, thestudents are being recognized astrailblazers, future political leaders, wanting to change the world while onanother side, they are viewed asspoiled, impossible, and toodemanding. The differences betweenthe government and the studentsappear insurmountable which only afall election may solve, but notcompletely. There seems to be nowinners in this tug of war, and manylosers, including merchants whosebusinesses have been hurt because ofthe disruptions and destruction ofprivate property by a violent minoritywho seem to be present in every kindof demonstration. There are also thesilent voices of students who wanted tocontinue going to school but could notbecause the injunctions they obtainedwere not respected by the more activestudent groups. Ironically, the oneswho are vocal about democratic rightsare also the ones who seem to ignorethe rights of others.

Premier Christy Clark talks toFilipino-Canadian family (L-R) Michael,
B.C. Premier Christy Clarktook a surprising leap of faith whiletrolling for votes Sunday at PhilippineIndependence Day.
Addressing a large Filipinocrowd at Vancouver’s Slocan Park, thepremier said she may not look likenational hero Jessica Sanchez, butinside she is one of them.
“I may not look like JessicaSanchez, and I certainly can’t sing likeJessica Sanchez,” Clark said of theAmerican Idol finalist, who capturedthe island nation’s imagination and thebacking of the country’s president.
“I may not look like I’m ofFilipino descent, but in my heart, in myheart, I am Filipina.”
Clark — who posed forcountless photos during anIndependence Day parade at thevenue — made the remarks standingjust metres from a real-life Filipina MLA,Mabel Elmore, who made history lastelection as the first B.C. MLA ofPhilippine descent.
“I was a bit surprised,” Elmoretold The Province. “It wasunexpected.”
Elmore, a second-generationimmigrant, said if Clark truly feelsFilipina she could start by making a fewimportant changes to make life easierfor her newly-adopted fellow citizens.
“It could be a positive thing,”said Elmore. “She could help getrecognition for credentials earned inthe Philippines.
“We are a highly educatedpopulation, but many people havecredentials that aren’t recognized here,so they’re working at low-paying jobsin the service industries.”
Clark said she learned a lotabout the island nation when shebecame the first sitting B.C. premier tovisit the Philippines during an Asiantrade mission last month.
“The Philippines is a smallnation with a large number of people,”said Clark, noting the growinginfluence of B.C.’s Filipino immigrants.“Canada is a very large nation with toofew people.”
Elmore said Clark can learn alot more about the struggles newimmigrants face arriving here.
“There are 70,000 temporaryworkers in B.C. who have nogovernment services, because theyare not permanent residents,” saidElmore. “The B.C. government has cutadult education, which newcomers useto help get ahead.”
Clark campaigned her wayaround the crowd, led by a marchingband, stopping and posing with manyin the crowd.
“We were surprised. She cameto us and asked us if we wanted aphoto,” said starstruck Ana Ambulario, decked out along with husbandMichael and infant son Yuan in sportyjackets emblazoned with the emblemsand colours of the Philippine flag. “It’sreally great.”
Husband Michael was alsopleased with the spontaneous photo-op.
“She’s a very nice person,”Michael added. “She said, ‘Do youwant to take some photos,’ and I said,‘Sure.’”
The Philippines’ reboundingeconomy relies on tourism — Canadais the ninth largest source forinternational visitors — and onSunday Philippine government officialsmarketed a new tourist slogan for theSoutheast Asian nation: “It’s More Funin the Philippines.”

Montreal, June 17, 2012Successful, that was the word of
the people who witnessed the 114thanniversary of the PhilippineIndependence Day organized by TheCouncil of Canadian-Filipino Associationsof Quebec last June 17.
"This is an important occasion forus to be united, to set aside ourdifferences even just for a day," saidJames de la Paz, president of CCFAQ. . "
It took many years before we gained our
independence. That's why even we'rehere in Canada, we keep our values, culture and tradition.. "That's also the reason why we invitedvarious ethnic groups. We wanted toshare our values, culture and traditionwith them. "
The parade, which started fromthe Mackenzie King park, passed alongSt. Kevin St., left to Victoria St., right toVan Horne Ave., left to Legare St. andback to Mackenzie King park. Joining theparade were floats from variousorganizations like FAMAS, Knights ofRizal, Ladies of Rizal, UPS, Ati-atihan ofMontreal and Filipinos walking, many ofthem proudly wearing national costumes.
After the parade, the celebrationscontinued at the Mackenzie King parkwhere sumptuous Filipino dishes wereenjoyed by everybody. An invocation wasofficiated by Pastor Rod Tenorio. Whatimpressed and touched the people afterthe flag raising ceremony was the gunsalute by the Royal Canadian Forces.
"It's really a celebration with abang," said one onlooker.
Some of the politicians whogreeted the Filipinos on the occasion of
their 114th Independence Day
celebrations were mayor GeraldTremblay, borough mayor MichaelApplebaum, city councillor MarvinRotrand and MNA for OutremontRaymond Bachand .
Another highlight of the programwas the presentation of songs anddances not only by Filipino talents butalso by various ethnic groups like Mexico,Greece, Portuguese, Chile, Japan andKorea.

In his welcome address,Rotrand, who once proudly said that heknows more about Dr. Jose P. Rizal thanother Filipinos in Montreal, announcedthat Filipinos are commemorating theirIndependence Day on June 12.
"But since June 12 falls onTuesday which is a working day, thecelebrations, in cooperation with the city, will be held at the Mackenzie King park onJune 17, Sunday."
Rotrand talked about the struggleof Filipinos to gain independence anddemocracy. He said that Filipinos havefound Montreal a better city to live in.Whenever he meets Filipinos, hecontinued, they tell him how proud theyare of the Philippines and of their heritageand of course, Montreal, the city wherethey live in now. Filipinos, he added, arehardworking people who sometimes holdmore than one job and pay their taxes ontime. Furthermore, Rotrand mentioned theworks that the city has done for theFilipinos. Some of them are the rezoning
of a building that was converted into acenter, the installation of Dr. Rizal's bustand a basketball court at the MackenzieKing Park, the renaming of a small parkafter Dr. Jose Rizal in Snowdon. The cityhas closely worked with Gatan'spredecessors like former AmbassadorsFrancisco F. Benedicto and JoseBrillantes. He even extended his invitationto Gatan to consider Montreal his secondhome whenever he is in the city.
When Tremblay delivered hismessage, he praised the Filipinos for theirexceptional contributions to the city liketheir values . An example of these is theirlove for their families and friends, especially in time of need. He expressedhis admiration for Filipinos who have beenworking hard to help their families in thePhilippines. In addition, he said thatFilipinos are instrumentals in making thiscity a better place to live in He also toldthose in attendance that in the district ofCote des Neiges, Filipinos have thelargest population, next to the Jewishcommunity.
Meanwhile, when Gatan wasintroduced , he profusely thanked the cityfor its generosity and Tremblay for takinggood care of Filipinos in Montreal. Hethen added: "The Filipino community inMontreal represents the best of Filipinovalues. Montreal has one of the bestmulticultural programs in Canada. TheEmbassy will work on actualizing atwinning arrangement between Manilaand Montreal on the opening of aPhilippine consulate. Montreal shines asan example in spreading the gospel ofpeace, equality and fraternity. "
The reception, which lasted forabout two hours, was followed by theserving of wine and refreshments.

Dear EarthTalk: How do I learn aboutwhat pesticides may be on the food Ieat?
-- Beatrice Olson, Cleveland, OH
Along with the rise in the popularity oforganic food has come an increasedawareness about the dangers lurking onso-called “conventionally produced”(that is, with chemical pesticides andfertilizers) foods.
“There is a growing consensus in thescientific community that small doses ofpesticides and other chemicals can have
adverse effects on health, especiallyduring vulnerable periods such as fetaldevelopment and childhood,” reportsauthor and physician Andrew Weil, aleading voice for so-called integrativemedicine combining conventional andalternative medical practices. He addsthat keeping one’s family healthy isn’t theonly reason to avoid foods producedusing chemical inputs: “Pesticide andherbicide use contaminatesgroundwater, ruins soil structures andpromotes erosion, and may be acontributor to ‘colony collapse disorder’,the sudden and mysterious die-off ofpollinating honeybees that threatens theAmerican food supply.”
In general, fruits and vegetables with anouter layer of skin or rind that can bepeeled and discarded are the safest interms of pesticide residues. Mostpesticides are sprayed on the outside ofproduce. So if you are going to toss therind of that cantaloupe, you might as wellsave money and buy a conventionalversion. But a red pepper would be adifferent story: For those items consider itmoney well spent to go organic.
The non-profit Environmental WorkingGroup (EWG) lists a “dirty dozen” offruits and vegetables with the highestpesticide load so that consumers knowto look for organic varieties of them whenpossible. The dirty dozen are: apples, celery, strawberries, peaches, spinach, nectarines, grapes, sweet bell peppers, potatoes, blueberries, lettuce andkale/collard greens.
Another non-profit working hard to raiseawareness about pesticide residues onfoods is the Pesticide Action Network(PAN). The group’s recently launchedwebsite and accompanying iPhone appcalled “What’s On My Food” helpsconsumers know specifically whichpesticide residues are likely ending upon their foods (and in theirbloodstreams). In creating the database,PAN linked pesticide food residue datawith the toxicology for each chemicaland made the combined informationeasily searchable. “Pesticides are apublic health problem requiring publicengagement to solve,” the groupreports, adding that “What’s On MyFood” can be an important tool in raisingawareness.
While the website version of “What’s OnMy Food” is helpful for advanceplanning, the iPhone app is handy whileplying the supermarket produce aisles tohelp decide whether to go for organicvegetables or stick with the cheaperconventional ones. For instance, thedatabase shows that conventionallygrown collard greens likely contains
residues of some 46 different chemicalsincluding nine known/probablecarcinogens, 25 suspected hormonedisruptors, 10 neurotoxins and eightdevelopmental/reproductive toxins—notto mention 25 different compoundsknown to be harmful to honeybees.Spending a little quality time on thewebsite or app is enough to driveanyone to more organic foodpurchasing.

Dear EarthTalk: One of the objections towind power has been that the turbinescan kill birds. Has there been someprogress in developing bird-friendlywind power? -- Marcie Mahoney,Boston, MA
Bird collisions have been one of the
primary negatives of the recent growth inwind power across the United Statesand beyond. The U.S. Fish & WildlifeService (USFWS) estimates that almosta half million birds are killed each year inthe U.S. by wind turbines. “Birds can diein collisions with the turbine blades, towers, power lines, or relatedstructures, and can also be impactedthrough habitat destruction from thesiting of turbines, power lines, andaccess roads,” the non-profit AmericanBird Conservancy reports. “Some birds, such as sage-grouse, are particularlysensitive to the presence of turbines, and can be scared away from theirbreeding grounds several miles awayfrom a wind development.”
In response to this growing problem, theUSFWS released new federal guidelinesin March 2012 for land-based winddevelopers trying to avoid or minimizeimpacts to birds and their habitats. Theguidelines are voluntary at this point, butU.S. wind developers interested in asmoother ride through variouspermitting processes and the blessing ofenvironmental groups—several wereconsulted extensively in drawing up thenew guidelines—are doing their best tomake their designs and implementationscomply.
The federal government’s 22-memberWind Turbine Guidelines AdvisoryCommittee, which included experts fromthe National Audubon Society, NatureConservancy, Defenders of Wildlife,Massachusetts Audubon and BatConservation International, developedthe guidelines. Committee membersreport they are optimistic that the newguidelines provide a path to betterprotection for birds and their habitats.
“The guidelines steer wind turbinesaway from vital habitat…and toward landalready marked by development,” saysDavid Yarnold, National Audubon’sPresident. “They give the U.S. Fish andWildlife Service a place at the table forsiting decisions; they help protect siteswith high potential risk for birds; andthey minimize habitat fragmentation.” Headds that the guidelines are based onthe best available science and “providea roadmap to better bird protectionsacross each of America’s four greatflyways.”
Audubon pushed to ensure that theguidelines address habitatfragmentation, one of the biggestpotential impacts of wind developmenton birds. Wind developers thatcooperate with the guidelines will avoiddividing important habitats like forestsand grasslands, thus maintaining theirsuitability for wildlife.
“These first-ever federal guidelines are agame-changer and big win for bothwildlife and clean energy,” says Yarnold.“By collaborating with conservationistsinstead of slugging it out, the windpower industry gains vital support toexpand and create jobs, and wildlifegets the protection crucial for survival.”
For its part, the American BirdConservancy would like to take thevoluntary out of the guidelines andinstead require wind developers tocomply. The group recently filed apetition with the U.S. Department of theInterior calling for mandatory rulesprotecting millions of birds from thenegative impacts of wind energy andrewarding responsible wind energydevelopment.

VANCOUVER, BC—Monday,June 11 is Tax Freedom Day, the dayCanadians have finally earned enoughmoney to pay all the taxes they owe toall levels of government for the year, according to the Fraser Institute’sannual calculations.
Tax Freedom Day arrives oneday later than in 2011, when it fell onJune 10.
"This underscores a worryingtrend across the country ofgovernments increasing taxes," saidCharles Lammam, Fraser Instituteassociate director of tax and budgetpolicy and co-author of CanadiansCelebrate Tax Freedom Day on June11, 2012.
Despite tax increases, thereport notes that Tax Freedom Daywould have come 12 days later thisyear if, instead of running deficits, governments covered their currentspending with even greater taxincreases.
"We need to remember that thebudget deficits incurred by Ottawa andthe provinces must one day be paid forby taxes and could mean a later TaxFreedom Day in the future."
Tax Freedom Day is an easy-to-understand measure of the total taxburden imposed on Canadian familiesby federal, provincial, and localgovernments. If Canadians wererequired to pay all taxes up front, theywould have to give governments eachand every dollar they earned prior toTax Freedom Day.
To celebrate Tax Freedom Dayand bring attention to the array of taxesCanadians pay, the Fraser Instituteproduced a satirical R&B song andmusic video (watch it on YouTube).Canadians can also calculate theirpersonal Tax Freedom Day using theFraser Institute’s Personal TaxFreedom Day Calculator.
A later Tax Freedom DayThe federal government and
several provinces increased taxes in2012, which contributed to the later Tax
Freedom Day. For example, the federalgovernment increased EmploymentInsurance (EI) premiums; Quebecincreased its provincial sales tax, health tax, and gas and mining taxes;British Columbia raised its health tax;New Brunswick increased its financialcorporation capital tax and propertytransfer tax; Manitoba raised tobaccotaxes, gas taxes, and its financialcorporate capital tax, in addition toexpanding the list of items covered byits provincial sales tax; and Ontariointroduced a new tax bracket for high-income earners and canceled ascheduled decrease in the generalcorporate tax rate.
Tax Freedom Day also arriveslater in 2012 because Canada’seconomy is improving. When theeconomy recovers from a recessionand incomes increase, a family’s taxburden also tends to increase becauseof Canada’s progressive tax system, which imposes higher taxes asCanadians earn more money.Household consumption also rises, which results in an increase in theamount of sales and otherconsumption taxes families pay.
Total tax billIn 2012, the average Canadian
family (with two or more individuals)will earn $94,259 and pay a total of$41,627 in taxes, for a total tax billamounting to 44.2 per cent of income.
In calculating the averageCanadian family’s income, the reportconsiders not just wages and salaries, but also interest, dividends, private andgovernment pension payments, oldage pension payments, and othertransfers from governments.
Of the many taxes Canadianfamilies pay, the largest increase in2012 comes in the form of socialsecurity, pension, medical, andhospital taxes—up $507 for theaverage Canadian family. Othernotable increases: sales taxes ($297),income taxes ($283), and propertytaxes ($142).
"Many Canadians would besurprised to find out just how much taxthey pay to various levels ofgovernment. In addition to moreobvious taxes like income tax, ‘hidden’taxes such as alcohol and gasolinetaxes often go unnoticed," Lammamsaid.
"That’s why our calculations ofTax Freedom Day are so important. They give Canadian families acomplete picture of their total taxburden, allowing them to considerwhether they get value for their taxdollars."
Tax Freedom Day among the provincesTax Freedom Day varies from
province to province, depending onthe taxation levels of provincial andlocal governments. Alberta continuesto enjoy the earliest Tax Freedom Dayon May 22, followed by Prince EdwardIsland on June 2 and New Brunswickon June 6. Manitoba’s Tax FreedomDay falls on June 7 followed by BritishColumbia (June 8), Ontario (June 10),Saskatchewan and Nova Scotia (June12), and Quebec on June 17.Newfoundland and Labrador has thelatest Tax Freedom Day, June 21.
All but three provinces(Newfoundland and Labrador, BC, and
Alberta) experience a later TaxFreedom Day in 2012 than in 2011.Quebec has the longest delay in TaxFreedom Day, with celebrations beingpostponed by four days this year.
Newfoundland and Labrador,Saskatchewan, Alberta, and BritishColumbia have significant naturalresources which provide the provinceswith royalties; however, there is anongoing debate over whether naturalresource royalties should beconsidered a tax. If royalties areexcluded from the Tax Freedom Daycalculations, then Tax Freedom Dayarrives 24 days earlier inNewfoundland and Labrador, 11 daysearlier in Saskatchewan, nine daysearlier in Alberta, three days earlier inBritish Columbia, and two days earliernationwide.
Tax Freedom Day calculationsare based on forecasts of personalincome, and on federal and provincialbudget tax revenue. When finalrevenue numbers become available atthe end of each fiscal year andpersonal income data are updated byStatistics Canada, we revise our TaxFreedom Day calculations for previousyears.Media Contacts: C h a r l e sLammam (Fraser Institute

Ask the Video Guy
As we all know that one of theculprits of sluggish computer operation isviruses on the system. Once you havedownloaded an anti-virus software andhave it completely scanned, yourcomputer should be running normally. If itstill slow then you have to accept the realitythat you need an up-grade. Here are waysto do it:
Order a new system from adealer, whether local or mail-order. This isby far the easiest way to get your spiffynew system, but it's also the mostexpensive.
Upgrade parts that get outdated. This is a noble goal, but it's not alwayspossible or practical to actually do this.Take video cards as an example: all of thehottest new graphics chipsets won't workin an older AGP slot because the design isfor the PCI Express bus. A lot of video cardmanufacturers are beginning to phase outtheir old AGP cards and we expect thatthey will become difficult to find by year-end. And if you've got an ancient computerwith a standard PCI (as opposed to PCIExpress) video card, forget it--it'll be prettymuch impossible to find a new graphicscard.
Finally, your third option: buildyour new computer completely fromscratch. This gives you the flexibility to getprecisely the system you are looking for. The last two methods do requireknowledge of the interconnectivity of yourcomputer parts, but it's not nearly ascomplex as you might think.
First Things FirstBefore you purchase anything,
there are several different system formfactors (sizes and layouts of motherboardsand cases) to consider. ATX is the mostcommon. It is a relatively large form factor, but one which provides for a great deal ofexpandability. MicroATX is a miniatureversion of ATX which provides a maximumof four slots on the motherboard asopposed to ATX's seven. Most full ATXcases can accept Micro ATXmotherboards.
Another form factor is BTX, whichmoves components around a bit to try toget better airflow and more efficientcooling for hotter processors. There are afew subsets of BTX as well.
What Makes It Tick? The first thing your computer
needs is a case. This is the most visiblecomponent of your system and the firstcomponent most people seeing yoursystem will look at, so it's a place to put insome individuality. If you're a utilitarian, youcan go for something practical. On theother extreme, you can go for a gamingcase with windows, cold-cathodefluorescent tubes and multi-colored LEDsto dress up your machine.
Typically most computer casescome with a pre-installed power supply. This supply converts power from the wallcurrent into types of power that yourcomputer needs in order to operate. Whilethe power supplies provided with mostcases are adequate, many feel the need toupgrade to something more substantial. Ifyou do, we'd recommend at least a 400Wunit. Also, make sure to see whatconnections you need for yourmotherboard. The main power connectormay have either 20 or 24 pins, and theancillary power connector will have either 4or 8 pins
Everything in your system willconnect to your motherboard. This is themain circuit board in your system. The
Are you ready to build your owncomputer from scratch? Just do it!
primary differentiating features of amotherboard are its form factor and thetype of processor it can accommodate.Contained on the motherboard are slots,USB ports and connections for drives(ATA, and increasingly SATA).
The processor has to match themotherboard by socket type, but otherconsiderations are: whether the processorhas one or two cores (some video-relatedsoftware is optimized for dual-coreprocessors); the clock speed and front-side bus speed of the processor (faster isbetter); and the cache sizes on theprocessor (more is better). Consider, however, that there are somedependencies between processors andmotherboards either at hardware orsoftware (BIOS) level--be sure to checkyour motherboard manufacturer's supportsite before you pull out the credit card.Unless you have special needs, toeliminate the concern for matchingmotherboard and CPU, many people optto purchase both as a unit.
As for memory, the absoluteminimum you'd want is 512MB. 1GB ismuch better, though, especially if you planto do anything more complex than simplecuts. Now you can install up to 12 GB. Yourmemory also has to match what yourmotherboard and processor can support. Two things to look out for are whether thememory is DDR or DDR2, and the speed ofthe memory that you need.
Optical drives will be evolving alittle more over the next few years with theintroductions of Blu-ray and HD-DVD. Butfor now, you'll be able to get any flavor ofDVD burner you like. The vast majority ofdrives uses the ATAPI interface (whichplugs into standard ATA connections onyour motherboard), although there is asmattering of SATA drives available.
Audio, LAN, FireWire and videomight be in different locations on yoursystem, depending on how you want toconfigure it. Pretty much all motherboardsinclude onboard audio these days, butserious audiophiles will generally opt touse PCI or USB sound devices instead, as
they pick up less interference from otherdevices on the electrically-activemotherboard. Onboard LAN ports are alsoextremely common, but you might findyourself wanting to add another networkinterface or a Wi-Fi card. Any motherboardworth considering for video editingapplications will include at least oneFireWire port (note that we've constrainedour manufacturer listing to include onlymanufacturers who offer at least oneFireWire-equipped motherboard in theirproduct lineup).
As for video, most bargainmotherboards include onboard video thatprovides acceptable performance at theexpense of a few MB of system memory. However, if you're serious about your videoor you're planning to do any compositingwork or 3D graphics, you'll want to use aPCI Express video card. Some esotericgaming configurations have multiple videocards, but this seems like overkill to us--just one should be plenty.
Just like a Lego PuzzleIf you still hyperventilate
whenever you open your system's case, just take a deep breath, grab yourscrewdriver, and look closer. Notice all ofthe colors and unique connectors. All ofthese features are designed to guide youto the places you need to go. Mostconnections you will come across will fitonly one way, whether it is a shroudedconnection (e.g. drive connections), aconnection marked for Pin #1 (e.g. frontpanel connections), or a keyed connector(e.g. power supply connections). All of themanuals that ship with the parts that youbuy will also help guide you to how theparts will interconnecomputers. I wouldrecommend you to watch “Youtube” oncomputer assembly/ Its free and easy tounderstand.
Good luck and have fun!

crowd. As the scorecards were read, the boos started with the first verdictagainst Pacquiao and didn't let upthrough the post fight interviews with avisibly sheepish Bradley.
Throughout the fight, Bradleyseemed to have no answer for
Pacquiao's straight lefts, whichfound their target unerringly, whileBradley's own lack of power wasapparent in all the close exchanges. When the Compubox figures came in,it was clear that Pacquiao had easilyout-thrown and out-landed hisopponent throughout the fight, andsome of his figures were nearly doublethose of his opponent.
The judges though, seemed tofavor Bradley's constant, if modest, movement in their scoring. DespitePacquiao's big scoring punches andfour dominant opening rounds, he waslargely content to wait out the firstcouple of minutes of the middle andlater rounds and then attack in the finalminute. He did so repeatedly andeffectively, but apparently not enoughto convince the people who mattered.
It was Pacquiao's first fightsince an underwhelming bout againstJuan Manuel Marquez in November, and in the build up this week, there hadbeen whispers that all was not well inhis camp, despite the rosy picture
painted by his new found religiouszeal. Even on Saturday, EmmanuelSteward, commentating for HBO,complained repeatedly about thechampion's mindset - his insistence onwatching the Celtics vs Heat Game 7,his tardiness to the ring - while praisingthe collected nature and focus of hisyounger opponent.
Yet from the opening bell,Pacquiao was all business - coming inoff a tight defense and repeatedlydriving straight lefts through Bradley'sguard, having expertly set him up tomove his head into the path of them. Itwas a much sharper, more controlledPacquiao than had shown up againstMarquez and by the middle roundsSteward, ringside, was purring over hispower and control of the fight.
Bradley meanwhile, twisted hisfoot awkwardly while evadingPacquiao in the second round andcomplained persistently to hisunsympathetic seconds, who urgedhim on to forget the pain and "makehistory". When it transpired that he had,if not in the way he might have wanted,he and his corner leapt in the air, before the realization of the ugly moodof the crowd muted the celebrations.
Interviewed after the fight, asthe crowd expressed their frustration,an equivocal Bradley said he wouldhave to "watch the tape" and "see" if hewon, before saying, "Let's do it again inNovember".
November, of course, was thelatest of the tentatively scheduledopenings for a Pacquiao vsMayweather fight that may now neverhappen. When he gets out of jailMayweather may point to Pacquiao'sloss of this fight as one more reasonwhy he's not the right fight for him now,and Pacquiao may feel the lure of hislife outside the ring rather than thedesire to go through Bradley again, fora shot at Mayweather that may nevercome.
Asked if he thought he hadwon the fight, Pacquiao said,"Absolutely". He also said he had torespect the judges' decision. Fewwatching will feel the same way.
Former heavyweight championLennox Lewis tweeted: "Unbelievable!#PacBradley This is another stain onboxing. Even worse than my draw withHolyfield! #Disgraceful."Graham Carter ( guardian.co.uk)

June 18, 2012 By Joe KoizumiRe-post of a commentary published inFightNews.com (Reprinted from theFilipino Connection)
Boxing is a mysterious game.A hero abruptly falls to the ground ofobscurity without a crown after a single
defeat. This is not to argue thecontroversial verdict but to point outManny Pacquiao’s technical problemand suggest his necessity to regain hisprevious assets as a marveloussuperstar. This observer has keptwatching Manny Pacquiao since hewas an eighteen-year-old flyweightnovice training at the L&M gym inManila, Philippines. When I was amanager of the WBC featherweightchamp Luisito Espinosa, Manny theMenace, then the flyweight titlist of theOPBF (Oriental and Pacific BoxingFederation), appeared on theundercard of Espinosa’s title defense, demolishing Panomdej Ohyuthanakornin the first round in Koronadal City inDecember 1997. I carefully watchedManny’s improvement in every fight tosee him grow up to be a sensationalknockout artist.
Having viewed Pacquiaotraining under the supervision of thelate handler Pablo Leonardo andAmerican trainer Rick Stucki, I realizedthat the skinny kid had a special talentin exploding his power at a pinpointthough he looked still raw, wild andrough-and-tumble. He then had a badhabit of having the left guard wide-openin throwing a southpaw jab —with hiselbow far away from the side of thebody. Pacquiao also had his right guard

PERSONALITY OF THE MONTH
by W. G. QuiambaoThe mere mention of war-torn
Afghanistan is enough reason for manypeople to avoid travelling or workingthere. But Ronald Santos, son of Reuben, former president of Filipino-CanadianTennis Association of Montreal, isn't one oftem. He has lived and worked on and off asan international consultant in Afghanistansince 2010.
Santos, a resident of Verdun, graduated with a degree in Sociology andAnthropology from Loyola University anddid a post graduate at Carleton University.
He is the owner of TRICANMultimedia Solutions (ITMS), a companythat specializes in applying solutionanalysis methodology to develop systemsthat require the modelling of complexcompetencies.
He held various positionsincluding the following: Deputy TeamLeader, Marketing Programs at CoffeyInternational Development, ICTConsultant, Business Analyst, ProjectManager at Carleton University. .
The following is an excerpt fromhis blog:
"Never in my professional careerthat I tried so hard to travel to a placeregarded as a 'hardship post'. Theassignment offer came as I wasvacationing in the Caribbean rain forest inCosta Rica.
The plan for me before going toKabul, Afghanistan was to receive HostileEnvironment Awareness Training inLondon to Dubai and finally land-incountry. Many security companies provideHEAT training. My deployment was sosudden that only cursory training wasgiven enough to demonstrate 'Duty ofTour'. I was only to receive classroomtraining.
My training was on one-on-onewith a former UK Protective Servicessoldier and one London beat cop. I wasgiven Power Point presentations withseemingly absurd titles: ImprovisedExplosives (IESs) and Vehicle BoneHostage Survival, kidnapping andRetrieve, Ballistic Weapons AwarenessDevices (IESs).
We explored topics such as howlong an inexperienced AK 47' operatorcould unload a pull chip (2 seconds) andunload (to 1 second).
So what does an internationaldevelopment consultant take from such abriefing? For me, Afghanistan is not theundifferentiated mass of killing fields, theimpression of which can be promoted by the media. It is much morenuanced than that. There are thousands of'expats' working and living in Afghanistan.Personally, I was able to tick off in my mindone by one threats that seemed likely butnow are remote. For example, it's highlyunlikely that I'll be a target of kidnapping inKabul given the number of checkpointsthat severely limit mobility and the rapidresponse of local security organizations.Bottom line, the risks are manageable ifmeasures are taken which are appropriateto the situation. Yes, I would have a zerochance of being harmed sitting in myhome. Neither however am I guaranteedharm working in Kabul.
I consider myself to have a high
ability to cope . Even for me, it's quite ashock to me to move between the LasVegas-like culture of Dubai and the harshrealities of Afghanistan. Even with my self-professed cultural sensitivity, it's hard to beintimidated by the unsmiling hardenedmoustached, craggy-faced security guardat the airport, all carrying various weaponswhich I can now identify as light machineguns. My respect for diversity betrays meagain as I am put off by a group of 30bearded men all dressed in the traditionalshalwar kameez. However, they areinnocuous as I cut in line at the x-raymachine and found myself surrounded bythem.
What I like about travelling for funor for work : the prickly feeling that you getwalking down streets you've never beenbefore to situate yourself within yourimmediate surrounding you are completelyin the moment.
I finally landed in Kabul . Myexperience in Kabul is a bit different. I livein a rubble. I experience the culture fromthe backseat of an SUV just beyond theheads of our security escort. As I wasdriven to and from the Ministry, I see thelunar-like hills that surround Kabul. Andthe dingy brick houses that seemprecariously perched on them. Andbeyond the impressive snowy peeks of theHindu Kush. From the windows, I seeshopkeepers and fruit sellers. I see womenveiled in ways from the permissive headscarves to the infamous full length barqueThere are the ever present undertrainedand ill-disciplined Afghan national policewho man check points. And the Karazai-affiliated security militia who scare memore than anything.
My universe, however, isexpanding slowly as I am brought along bythe more experienced Afghanistan handsof my teams. Some residential streets arerutted, dusty and unpaved. All the houseson the street where my villa is located aresurrounded by roaring walls. Entrancesseem deliberately obscured. And if one isvigilant as taught, gun towers can bespotted with armed guards scanning allactivity. I'm surprised when my teammembers tell me that within 30 yards of mylocation is a cafe that makes fantasticcappuccino, a really good Japaneserestaurant and another good Chineserestaurant. There are no signs of all fromthe outside that these places exist. InKabul, 'security is obscurity.'
So Kabul has a front stage andbackstage. There is the Kabul that onesees often in the television: ramshackledusty, strife ridden, inhostile amd
there's another Kabul : cosmopolitanand sophisticated or as one UN staffputs it in the blog, Kabul is a moderncity without modern facilities ."
The final chapter of Santos'saga is yet to be written, but there aresome lessons learned from the intrepidadventure traveller and internationalconsultant.
For me, Afghanistan isn't theundifferentiated mass of killing fields, the impression of which can bepromoted by media, says Santos

Masaya. In-enjoy ko siya,” she enthused.
She deemed that her eldest sonJoshua would’ve liked theexperience as well.

In an attempt to resolve theirrow which spawned a legal tussle,Cristine Reyes apologized to herelder sister Ara Mina on nationalTV, June 24.
In her live interview on "TheBuzz," the young actress directedto Ara:
“I’m sorry and I would like toapologize if ever I offended you, sumama ang loob mo sa'kin. I triedmy best na pumunta sa'yo, alammo 'yan ate. Sinabi ko pa 'yan sa‘yo na kung gusto mo luluhod akosa harapan mo. Noon-noon pa 'to.Sana lumambot na 'yung puso mosa akin para maayos na itong gulo, para tahimik na, para saikakatahimik ng pamilya natin."
Cristine explained thereafterthat she was holding back heremotions while delivering theapology "kasi gusto kong magingpositive sa life."
She also gave a message totheir mother, who is apparentlycaught in the middle of hersquabble with Ara.
"Mommy, eto na. Sana maayosna. Nagkausap kasi kami lahatnung Sunday, Father's Day, so I
hope maging okay na after thisand I hope na matahimik na.Sana…" said she.
Ara charged Cristine with libeland grave coercion last April, grounded on the alleged below-the-belt text messages that thelatter had sent her. Their row waspurportedly rooted from Ara owingCristine over a million pesos for atownhouse they purchased fortheir mother last year. Cristineallegedly threatened to wreck hersister's life if she doesn't pay heralleged debt.
Although she didn't seek forany damages for the cases, Arahas demanded a "sincere" publicapology from Cristine,
With everything she has gonethrough, Cristine realized thatsetbacks are part of life and thatone should never give up.
"Bawat problema, maynatututunan ako. Do'n ako lalongtumitibay… Boring ang buhaykapag walang problema…" sherelated.
Those trials have also madeCristine see "'yung mga taongnandiyan talaga sa tabi ko."
"And sa totoo po, mas laloakong napalapit kay God. Superpo," she added.
Ara dissatisfied?Despite Cristine's public
apology, Ara doesn't seem sold onher sister's act. She expressed herseeming dissatisfaction also onSunday by re-tweeting some postsfrom netizens who deemed thatCristine's apology was insincere.
Ara likewise posted a quotationover Twitter, which read:
"'A stiff apology is a secondinsult...The injured party does notwant to be compensated bec hehas been wronged; he wants to behealed bec he has been hurt.' a

In the midst of Dolphy’s recentstruggles with his health, receivingthe National Artist Award is of noimportance at the moment, according to the King of Comedy’sson Eric Quizon.
“Right now, I want my dad’shealth to improve. Tsaka na langnatin pag-usapan yung NationalArtist [Award],” he said in aninterview with GMA News late lastweek.
Eric added, “But if they’regoing to give it to him, thank youvery much.”
On June 22, the NationalCommission for Culture and theArts (NCCA) announced thatDolphy is included in this year’sNational Artists nominees.
“For the moment, weunderstand that Mang Dolphy hasbeen nominated and is nowundergoing the process ofevaluation – along with othernoteworthy artists,” NCCA said in astatement.
German “Kuya Germs”Moreno, a good friend of theveteran comedian urged the NCCAto give the “overdue” award toDolphy.
“‘Wag naman nating ipagkait
ang isang bagay na hindi namandapat pagtalunan. Kasi provennaman eh. May katibayan naman.Best actor, lahat na nasa kanya.Life achievement award, yun pa,”Moreno told GMA News.
He also encouraged the publicto voice out the same call.
“Sabi nga ng pamilya, ng mgaanak, ‘hindi nga yan ang mahalagasa amin eh. Yung buhay ng papanamin.’ San nanggaling angkahilingan? Sa taong bayan mismonanggagaling. Nagda-doubt pasila?” he said.
Meanwhile, Movie andTelevision Review andClassification Board (MTRCB)Chair Grace Poe-Llamanzaresaired her opinion in response toPresident Benigno Aquino III’s callto name Dolphy as one of thisyear’s National Artists.
“I respect the presidentbecause he says [Dolphy]deserves it, but it has to go througha process,” Llamanzares said in aninterview with “Balitanghali,” June22.
“It’s [not] just the presidentwho can decide], it’s the council ofpeers… they’re experts in theirfield,” she added.
Should Dolphy be given theaward this year or not, NCCAexplained that it does not mean hedoesn’t deserve to be namedNational Artist.
“It can be readily seen that theselection of the National Artists is along process which sometimestakes about two years. That MangDolphy has not been awarded therecognition yet does not reflect onthe government or the arts sectorwanting or not wanting to do so,”NCAA added in a statement.

In what was arguably one of thebiggest upsets in recent boxing history,Filipino champ Manny Pacquiao wasdefeated by his American challengerTimothy Bradley, Jr. via a controversialsplit decision—and celebrities here andabroad are clearly not happy about it.
Half-Filipino stars were dismayedover the results, in which two of thejudges scored in favor of Bradley, in theawaited match held June 9 in Las Vegas,Nevada. Grammy winner Bruno Mars, forone, tweeted, "Pac man 4 life."
"American Idol" Season 11 runner-up, Filipino-Mexican Jessica Sanchez, who sang the US national anthem in thefight, congratulated Bradley but admitted,"I'm still really upset about the results."
Khloe Kardashian was "floored" and"shocked" over Pacquiao's defeat, saying, "Is this a joke? Bible am I trippingout??? The stats don't add up to thedecision made. This is crazy! Can I reallyget my money back now? So whenBradley checks the tape.... And seeswhat we all saw... Will he give the belt toPac? What winner says they need to

Boys: "I think I may never take boxingseriously after that tonight. Mannypacquiao won that fight! Sad day forboxing, I think we should protest! Bradleyshould man up and return that belt! This isso sad…"
Celebrity pair JustinTimberlake and Jessica Biel were alsoboth appalled "I cannot believe what I justsaw... Please tell me they read thatdecision wrong... I'm gonna let it go...After I say this... Boxing was RUINEDtonight for me.", said Justin, Jessica
meanwhile, said, "What a joke! I can'tbelieve they gave it to Bradley."
Filipino celebrities were just asheartbroken as well, expressing theirdisbelief that Pacquiao's winning streakwas broken anew. Here’s a selection ofsome of their Tweets:
Grace Lee: "I'm upset... Can'timagine how manny must feel. But I'msure his faith will carry him through. Gomanny!!! This fight does not define you:)."

MONTREAL - Irreconcilabledifferences.
They are the ominous wordsanyone acquainted with crisismanagement dreads but, in the case of the16-week dispute pitting students against
the government, they tell the tale of whathappened this week.
How far apart were the two sideswhen talks broke down Thursday? It wasso bad they couldn’t even agree how muchtime Premier Jean Charest actually spentat the table on the day he waded inpersonally.
His staff said 50 minutes. Thestudents said it was more like 30.
And so it went, with both sidesdigging in deeper and deeper the longerthe crisis lasted to the point neither sidecould afford politically to walk out withanything less than a platinum-plated deal.
It’s what Maurice Lemelin, anexpert in conflict resolution at the Écoledes Hautes Études Commercialesbusiness school, calls escalation and itusually ends badly.
“The parties have establishedtheir differences at the level of principles,”Lemelin said in an interview Friday. “And aprinciple is not an easy thing to negotiate.”
Add into the mix that the disparatestudent groups don’t behave liketraditional bargaining units – where theleadership actually leads – and you had arecipe for trouble, Lemelin added.
Education Minister MichelleCourchesne referred to exactly that in aRadio-Canada interview Friday.
“When the students went on thePlateau (Mont-Royal), the people with theirpots and pans went up to them and said,‘don’t give up,’ ” Courchesne said.
“When we (elected officials) allover Quebec went to the grocery store, people said the same thing to us, ‘don’tgive up.’
“What that means is ourrespective principles are difficult toreconcile. The students don’t want anincrease and we say everyone shouldcontribute to university financing.”
So there was pressure on allsides, concentrated on a small group ofpeople shuttered away four days in aQuebec City office building.
A second try at a negotiatedsettlement, the government wasparticularly stung by headlines claiming ithad “caved in,” when it offered to cut thetuition increase by $35 per year. Oneeditorial in La Presse said the backtrackingwas a sign of how weak the nine-year oldLiberal regime really is. The word“capitulation,” appeared.
Radical student threats, casteither in jest or seriously, to disrupt theGrand Prix pushed the government side tothe brink and the talks collapsed. By Fridaymorning, both sides were back in their
bunkers. Nobody was talking. The new president of the college
student federation, Éliane Laberge, bravelytold reporters Friday she would try to re-establish communications with thegovernment.
As for Charest, he was accused ofindulging in a scorched-earth policybecause the government suddenly brokeoff the talks without a solution, setting thestage for a summer of potential studentdisruptions of festivals or Quebecers’holiday travel. On Friday, arriving for aforum in Vaudreuil, Charest was asked if hehas a Plan B to deal with the crisis.
“Our door will always stay open(for future talks),” Charest said.
“What Quebecers want now is aperiod of calm.”
But it looks as though the talkingis over for now. Charest repeated that in allthe negotiations so far, the studentscontinuously returned to their pitch for atuition freeze or a moratorium, and neitheris acceptable in his eyes. So he appearsready to ride it out and appealed for calm –starting with a peaceful Grand Prix.
“The government wants a returnto social peace,” Charest said.
“We will make every effort to getthere. But not at any cost.
“There will always be subjects onwhich we don’t agree. But nothing justifiesintimidation and violence.”
He was asked if he foresees anend to the crisis.
“Some time in the next 18 monthsthere will be a general election in Quebec. That is the right time for those who reallyhave a profound disagreement to expressthemselves. And that is expresseddemocratically.”[email protected]© Copyright (c) The Montreal Gazette

Nik Wallenda has become thefirst person to tightrope walk directlyover Niagara Falls, crossing throughthe falls' famous mists and gusts in lessthan a half hour Friday night whiletethered to a wire at the insistence ofthe network televising the stunt.
Wallenda, seventh-generationscion of the Flying Wallendas circustroupe, slowly walked 1,800 feet — sixfootball fields — from the U.S. toCanada, 200 feet above the roilingNiagara River. "This is something noone in the world has ever done,'' hesaid after presenting his passport to aCanadian immigration officer. "Eventhough I had a tether, I didn't have touse it.''
Wallenda methodically movedalong the swaying, slippery wire, whichwas dripping with water, while carryinga 40-pound balance pole. Herepeatedly offered prayers of thanksand praise to Jesus Christ, which wereaudible to the television audience via abody microphone. He had timeto joke — "most water is wet,'' he
allowed at one point — and admitted tohis father that he felt like a "jackass''wearing the safety harness A f t e rmonths of hype, Wallenda made thewalk look easy, almost anti-climactic.He neither faltered nor tottered, anddidn't stop to make a cell phone call, ashe sometimes does, or perform anyother stunt. As he approached theCanadian side he pumped his right fistand dropped briefly to one knee. Hepranced the final few steps. B u the said the crossing wasn't easy: "Thatmist was thick. It was hard to see attimes. … The wind was wild. It'd comeat me one way and hit me from thefront, and hit me from the back."
While he was still out on thewire, he'd said, "I'm drained. … Myhands are going numb. I feel like I'mgetting weak.'' Weather instrumentsshowed winds gusting up to around 14mph over the falls at the time of thewalk. The walk was witnessed by acrowd estimated in the tens ofthousands, which roared with delightas he left the American side and lateras he approached Canada. "It's agreat achievement,'' said JackieLeClaire, a clown and acrobat whoperformed with the Ringling BrothersCircus for 20 years. "It would havebeen an ever greater one if they hadn'tmade him wear that tether.'' A B C ,
which televised the walk live, insistedthat Wallenda wear a harnessconnected to the wire to spare itsviewers the possibility of seeing thedaredevil fall to his death. B u tWallenda's family — the FlyingWallendas acrobatic troupe — isfamous for working without a net or itsequivalent. And few if any of the otherdozen people to walk over the NiagaraRiver near the falls used such a safetydevice. Before the walk, Wallenda saidhe only wore the harness because heneeded ABC's financial support forcover the costs of his project, whichtopped $1 million. LeClaire saidthat even with the tether, the walk wasparticularly challenging, "becauseaerialists always try to calculate risk.Nik couldn't do that because this walkhad never been done before. Thehumidity, the water, the wind — somany unknowns!''
Some speculated before thewalk that Wallenda would drop thetether en route. "I'm betting he takes itoff," New York State Sen. George
Maziarz, who co-sponsored legislationto give Wallenda a waiver to thecentury-old ban on stunting at the falls, told the Buffalo News. He said bedoubted ABC would interrupt its livefeed even if Wallenda did take off theharness. With millions watching, "It'sgonna add to the drama," Maziarz said.
Paul Gromosiak, a localhistorian whose books include one onNiagara Falls daredevils, said the lastconfirmed wire crossing near the fallswas in 1896. He said the proximity ofWallenda's wire to the falls made hiswalk far riskier than any other .Wallenda practiced on a wire in theparking lot of a local gambling casino, and had himself sprayed with a firehose and buffeted by a wind machineto simulate the conditions he'd faceover the falls. As for distractions, such as wind gusts and helicopters, hesaid, "I've trained all my life not to bedistracted by distractions.'' By RickHampson, USA TODAY

This Summer, DrinkPink!By David White
With Memorial Day behind us,summer has officially arrived. Thismeans more time outside, andconsequently, a different cocktailmenu.
For lazy days by the pool or atthe beach, it's hard to beat a piñacolada, margarita, or other tropicaldrink. When enjoying a hot dog orhamburger at a barbeque, beer is theobvious choice.
For wine drinkers, finding theperfect summertime match can bedaunting. When lounging on the deckor patio, red wine can seem too heavy. And sometimes, that simple white wineis just, well, too simple.
That's why it's hard to beat acrisp rosé when the weather is warm.
It's easy to dismiss pink wine. After all, most Americans associaterosé with cheap, sweet "blush" wines, like Sutter Home's white Zinfandel.
This style of wine traces itsroots to the early 1970s. Back then, demand for white wine outpaced
supply, so many California winemakersstarted producing white wine from redgrapes, taking advantage of the factthat even red grapes give off whitejuice.
In 1975, the winemaker atSutter Home, Bob Trinchero, had aproblem while making his whiteZinfandel. A portion of the wineexperienced a "stuck fermentation,"meaning the yeast died before all thesugar had converted into alcohol.Rather than "fix" the wine by addingmore yeast, Trinchero decided to let itsit for two weeks. When he revisited thewine, he knew it would be a hit -- andSutter Home's modern-day whiteZinfandel was born. Countlessimitators would soon follow.
This style of pink wine remainsquite popular and it will always havefans. More often than not, though, white Zinfandel and other blush winesare just too sweet. Many taste morelike Kool-Aid or strawberry fruit punchthan wine.
True rosés are bone dry, textured, and refreshing. And they canbe just as complex and food friendly astraditional wines.
True rosés are made in one oftwo ways.
In the first method, thewinemaker crushes red wine grapesand leaves the juice in contact with theskin for a brief period, typically one ortwo days. She then discards the skins, allowing the juice to finish fermentationon its own. Thanks to the short periodof skin contact, the wine retains somecolor. Here, rosé is the only goal.
In the second method, rosé isa byproduct of red wine fermentation.Red wine obtains color, tannin, structure, and flavors from grape skins. If a winemaker wants to increase theskin-to-juice ratio during fermentation,
she can simply remove some juice atan early stage. This pink juice can befermented separately to create rosé.This method is known as saignée.
True rosés have been a part oflife in France for centuries. In thesoutheastern part of the country, residents and visitors alike have longrecognized the splendor of pairing roséwith warm weather and coastal cuisine.
France remains the source ofmany fantastic rosés - great examplescan be found in Bandol, Tavel,Sancerre, and many other regions. When looking for French rosés, it's bestto look for reliable importers, like KermitLynch, Beaune Imports, Weygandt-Metzler, and Robert Kacher. All fourbring in a number of knockout wines.
Plenty of delightful pink winescome from outside France, as well.Across the world, more and moreproducers are making top-notch,authentic rosés.

In the United States, someproducers to look for include AlexanderValley Vineyards, which makes asplendid rosé of Sangiovese, Copain, and Ponzi. Another favorite is made byMulderbosch in South Africa.
The world is still awash in badrosés, of course. It's still quite easy toaccidently wind up with a bottle that'stoo heavy, alcoholic, or sweet. So ifyour local wine shop offers tastings, besure to stop in when rosés are open -you might find a crisp, refreshing winethat's worth stocking up on.
After all, pink wine is theperfect accompaniment to summer. Sowhy not grab a case?

and June 2014.” Presidential spokesmanEdwin Lacierda made theannouncement following a meetingbetween President Benigno Aquino3rd and farmer-members of Task ForceMapalad who called on the former tohasten the distribution of CARP-covered lands to them. Lacierda saidlandholdings with 25 hectares andabove will be prioritized and distributedeffective immediately. “Between nowand June 2014, all agricultural landsshall be covered and distributed toqualified beneficiaries. Priority shall begiven to landholdings 25 hectares andabove and notices of coverage wouldbe issued on or before December2012,” he said. “This will includepeaceful and orderly installation offarmer beneficiaries of all lands underthe program. To put all landholdingsunder the program, notices ofcoverage or NOCs of lands 10hectares and above shall be issued onor before December 2012 forlandholdings under 10 hectares, notices of coverage shall be issued notlater than July 2013; and Republic Act(RA) 9700 has allocated at least 150-billion for the program which would beutilized to successfully complete theimplementation of agrarian reform,”Lacierda added.
Joining Mr. Aquino andLacierda during the meeting wereBudget Secretary Florencio “Butch”Abad, Agriculture Secretary ProcesoAlcala, Agrarian Reform SecretaryVirgilio de los Reyes and PresidentialManagement Staff chief Julia Abad. Also present were former SenatorAquilino Pimentel, Jr., ChristianMonsod, and lawyer Armando Jarilla ofTask Force Mapalad, the nationalcoordinator; Alberto Jaime, Task ForceMapalad president; and EdnaSobrecaray, Task Force Mapaladspokesman. P1B released
Lacierda said that with respectto support services, as mandated bySection 37 of RA 9700, the provision oninitial capitalization for new agrarianreform beneficiaries and socializedcredit for existing agrarian reformbeneficiaries shall be implemented. To this end, the DBM has committedthe immediate release of P1 billion tobe allocated for support services. Headded that the Land Bank of thePhilippines shall review its policies, rules, and regulations on providingcredit to farmers to make it moreaccessible to agrarian reformbeneficiaries. Moreover, the DARand the Department of Agriculture, withassistance from DBM, will develop asocialized credit program solely foragrarian reform beneficiaries that ismutually acceptable to both parties.Socialized credit program shall enablefarmers to maximize the productivity oftheir land and utilize the resourcesavailable to them. Both sides haveagreed to set up the multi-stakeholdersmechanism.
A multi-stakeholdersmechanism convened by the Presidentand composed of representatives fromDAR and other CARP-implementingagencies of the government, church,NGOs, peoples’ organizations, and
other farmer groups and federationsshall be immediately established tomonitor the implementation of theCARP, especially on the following:coverage and distribution ofagricultural lands; movement andperformance of DAR personnel;delivery of support services to thebeneficiaries; and budget allocationand utilization. Lacierda said that thedetails will be further discussed by themembers of that stakeholders’mechanism, while consultations onadministrative orders will continue.Meanwhile, the resolution of pendingcases on stock distribution options andlease back arrangements before thePresidential Agrarian Reform Councilor PARC will be fasttracked.
During a previous meetingbetween Interior and LocalGovernment Secretary Jesse Robredoand the farmers, the governmentcommitted to do the following tasks:work on the lease areas where thereare enforcement issues; review thetasking of PNP and refer to theDepartment of Justice the proposedchanges in 2009 guidelines as itapplies to DAR orders; establish PNPoutposts in critical areas whereinstalled farmers are being harassed;and establish direct line ofcommunication with the DILG. Dismal Earlier, Church leaders decried thegovernment’s dismal performance inagrarian reform, saying that the Aquinoadministration has the worst recordcompared to other post-EDSAadministrations. M a n i l aAuxiliary Bishop Broderick Pabillolamented that the DAR has beenconsistently “underperforming,”particularly in land acquisition anddistribution. “The current DARadministration has recorded the lowestCARP accomplishment whencompared to all DAR-CARPadministrations,” Pabillo said in anopen letter to President BenignoAquino 3rd. The letter was also signedby Fr. Marlon Lacal, executivesecretary of the Association of theMajor Religious Superiors of thePhilippines. They cited the hugebacklog of 1,093,000 hectares ofagricultural lands. Pabillo said that in2011, DAR accomplished only 54.6percent of its land acquisition anddistribution target. “The DARperformance for the first six months of2012 is expected to be equally dismal,”the bishop said. Conspiracy
Meanwhile, the militantpeasant group Kilusang Magbubukidng Pilipinas (KMP) also described onThursday the rumored resignation ofde los Reyes as a “collateral damage”of the “evil conspiracy betweenPresident Aquino and his allies inAkbayan to once again evade thedistribution of Hacienda Luisita.”
The KMP issued the statementafter reports said that a cabinet revampis on and that the DAR chief, who isnow implementing the Supreme Courtruling to distribute Hacienda Luisita, would be replaced by Akbayan Rep.Kaka Bagao. “We believe there isstrong pressure on Secretary De LosReyes to resign. He is a collateraldamage of the Aquino-Akbayanconspiracy to circumvent the SupremeCourt decision on Hacienda Luisita,”
KMP deputy secretary general WillyMarbella said. According to Marbella,Aquino and Akbayan are ganging upagainst Hacienda Luisita farmers. Theyare out to turn Hacienda Luisita into aso-called agrarian reform community(ARC) under the sham CARP. “A R Conly has a hairline difference from thenotorious stock distribution option(SDO) since control over the land doesnot belong to farmer beneficiaries,” hepointed out. Marbella pointed outthat “the grand zarzuela staged byAquino’s yellow gang that demandedfor the so-called fast-trackedimplementation of the bogus CARP isobviously designed at placing AkbayanRep. Kaka Bag-ao to the DAR.” “At thesame time, the Cojuangco-Aquinos areclapping behind the farmers’ marchesand so-called hunger strikes. Aquinoand his rabid allies in Akbayan exploitsthe legitimacy of the farmers’ demandfor land while giving false hopes onCarper or the very same sham landreform program that was used by thePresident’s family to evade landdistribution. This grand deception mustbe exposed and opposed,” Marbellastressed. “May we remind thepeople that the bogus CARP wasoriginally designed by the thenlandlord-President Cory Aquino toevade Hacienda Luisita’s distribution.CARP and the notorious SDO is not aglowing legacy but the biggestembarrassment of the formerPresident,” Marbella pointed out. With a report from Sammy Martin

As Pacquiao failed to make the112-pound limit, he forfeited his WBCflyweight belt on the scale and succumbedto Medgoen Singsurat via third-roundknockout in Thailand in September 1999.There’s a strong rumor —whether true ornot— that the scale had been manipulatedthough Pacquiao had already made thelimit before leaving the hotel to the weigh-in. The once dejected youngster, still 20,jumped up ten pounds to the 122-poundcategory, skipping the super-fly andbantam divisions. It must be a right moveby considering his physical growth.Pacman, in a comeback bout, promptlyseized the WBC international super-bantambelt by disposing of world-rated compatriotReynante Jamili in two quick rounds inDecember that year. The 21-year-oldFilipino became more awesome at 122pounds without struggling to make the 112-pound limit any longer, scoring fivedefenses straight all within the distance.
Pacquiao left for the US mainlandto try his fists in 2001, when he had afortunate encounter with his future long-time mentor Freddie Roach at the WildCard Gym. It was Roach that correctedManny’s bad butterfly habit in hittingpunches and also had him master tightguard along with his shifty footwork andbody movement. Since his IBF 122-poundcoronation by dispatching Lehlo Ledwabain Las Vegas in June 2001, Manny keptimproving technically and has become aninternational superstar.

watching Manny for 15 years. I thinkPacquiao’s strength consists of: 1)dazzling hand-speed; 2) pinpointprecision; 3) quick reflexes; 4) elusive andshifty footwork; and 5) incredible stamina(or ability to maintain his remarkablespeed on hand and foot until the end ofthe game). In his last fight with TimothyBradley, however, Pacquiao, incomparison with his best form shown inhis battles with David Diaz (fantastic right-hand lead) and Ricky Hatton (wonderfulone-punch demolition), failed to show hisassets against the man named DesertStorm. Pacquiao wasn’t as fast as usual, lacked his trademark precision, failed toshow his quick reflexes, didn’t (orcouldn’t) move well, and wasdisappointingly fading in the last threerounds. He looked heavy and slow.Pacquiao was simply not what he used tobe.
I was a commentator here inJapan to telecast it live on Sundayafternoon because of the time difference. My score was 116-112 in favor of Pacman,as I, due to the screen by receiving thesignal from Las Vegas, didn’t give Bradleymore than four rounds based on thescoring standard of effectiveaggressiveness. Bradley didn’t lookeffective, nor hurt Pacquiao as Pacquiaoblocked his punches with his arms. Butthis is not to insist on my view that I sawPacquiao the winner, since I didn’t watch iton site but only on the screen in the FarEast.
I, as a Pacquiao viewer, felt sorryto see our Asian hero deterioratetechnically in his last two bouts with JuanManuel Marquez and Bradley. What has
happened? I deeply contemplated thatquestion after watching Bradley’s handraised in surprise.
What’s wrong with Manny? I haveseveral hypotheses:1. Pacquiao might have lost hisphysical flexibility due to his rapid gain ofweight and physique;2. Pacquiao might have becomeslower by moving up to the welterweightdivision;3. Pacquiao might have becomeless sharp in adjusting timing with hisnatural judgment of distance;4. Pacquiao might have to decreasehis training quantity at the age of thirty-three. His less impressive performance inhis last two bouts might have been partlycaused by his overtraining; and5. Pacquiao might have beenthoroughly studied by trainers of hisopponents since great many tapes sincehis Ledwaba fight in 2001 are easilyavailable on YouTube. He must keepimproving or innovating to gain some newweapon now that his magic might havebeen solved by his opposition.
I think it is ridiculous that bothcontestants, at the weigh-in, boast theirmuscles on the shoulder, chest andabdomen. Boxing isn’t a Mister Universecontest. Remember the muscles of SugarRay Robinson, Ike Williams, MuhammadAli, Jose Napoles, Sugar Ray Leonard,Roberto Duran, Alexis Arguello, etc. andyou realize the historically great didn’ttake an exercise of weight training sointensely as current boxers. The moregrotesque muscles you have, the lesssharp you are. Excessive weight trainingusually does boxers harm since it
obviously hardens the fundamentalmuscles (musculi trunci) for boxers torefine.
Boxing is a very special game. Itis not a pastime to enjoy leisure with yourfriends, like playing football, baseball, golf, or tennis. Boxing is a game thatrequires special sense, which may becalled timing, sharpness, reflexes, quickness, elusiveness, or mysteriousdomination of time and space. Mostimportant in boxing training is to sharpenone’s “Natural Timing”.
Pacquiao previously had plentyof incredible “Natural Timing” thanks tohis very unique career spanning from theflyweight division to the welterweightcategory. Why is Pacquiao so remarkableand marvelous? It is because he movedup in weight by carrying his flyweightspeed and developing his welterweightpower —greatly due to Freddie Roach’spatient cultivation for years. Pacquiao, however, had better review his latestperformance against Marquez andBradley. Something might have been lostin Pacquiao; it might be his potential“flexibility” that this reporter found in him15 years ago. It is his flexibility like abamboo. It is the flexibility with stability, restoring force, or power of restitution. It isthe physical fitness with the musclesquickly turning elastic from solid, or viceversa.
What feared Erik Morales, MarcoAntonio Barrera, Oscar De La Hoya, andShane Mosley? It was Pacquiao’s invisiblehand-speed. If a boxer can see hisopponent’s hand coming, he can react toavert his punches. Should his punch be
too fast, he cannot afford to avert it andprotect himself from the invisible attack. So, they were apparently afraid ofPacquiao’s quick hand. Also, Pacmancould instantly move to his optimumposition just prior to throwing his invisiblepunches, which made his attack veryeffective.
In his Bradley fight, Pacquiaosometimes scored good lefts to the face—amazingly with less effect— because ofhis less proper judgment of distance. Heseldom displayed his trademark puma-like footwork, but a bigger muscle-boundlion (Pacquiao) attempted to eat a smallerelusive victim (Bradley), wasting too muchenergy in earlier rounds. Secondguessing as it may be, Manny shouldhave saved his stamina badly wasted inthe fourth session for the sake of the lastthree rounds. Now that we see his staminaisn’t inexhaustible, Pacman should pacehimself next time.
This observer, one of Pacquiaofollowers, just murmured after our Asianhero’s upset defeat. I whole-heartedlyhope he will impressively display his realpower against Bradley in a rematch andthen realize a greatly anticipatedencounter with the fatal rival FloydMayweather, Jr.. For that, Manny hadbetter return to the fundamentals andregain his flash and flexibility.
