Thematic Unit: Who Am I?
Time frame: Jan 16 - June
Enduring Understanding: Students will understand how to communicate about themselves and others and analyze their interactions with their surroundings. They will understand that culture influences the art, literature, music and leisure activities of a society and this promotes an awareness of diverse beliefs in a global context.
Essential questions: How do I describe myself? How do I see and describe others? How are the sports and leisure activities in the target culture similar and different to my own?
Objectives: SWBAT describe themselves and their friends and they will be able to tell which sports and activities they like to do. They will be able to construct a simple letter in the target language

What I’m like:
*Teacher will introduce new vocabulary (tall, short, pretty, handsome, age, eye color, hair color, intelligent, shy, serious, athletic, funny, active, friendly, kind, silly, hard-working, artistic)

*Teacher will review gender agreement between adjectives and nouns and word placement order and students will practice these structures and the new vocabulary through repetition in games, activities and guided conversation and questions.

*Students will practice describing other students in the class. They will play the “Guessing game”. The teacher will describe a student in the class. Students may draw the person, then they need to guess who it is.

What I like to do:
*Teacher will introduce the new vocabulary: football, baseball, basketball, soccer, skiing/snowboarding, swimming, reading, chess, video games, gymnastics and karate. (These should be tailored to suit the interests of the students) Students will learn what the favorite sports are in the target countries.

*Students will review new vocabulary by playing games such as the fly-swatter/duster game.
They will state likes or dislikes as balls are gently tossed around the classroom.

Pen pal letters
*Teacher will model how to write a letter to a pen pal from White Rock School. She will review the importance of punctuation, accent marks, etc. Students will write and send their pen pal letters to White Rock School. When pen pal letters have been returned to them from White Rock School, they will read them in class, reviewing the target vocabulary.
