28th Annual Paper Boat Race

Each year, staff representatives from each Recreation Summer Camp (Tenderfoot, Little Walnut,

Walnut Creek Day Camp, Walnut Creek Sports Camp, Arts, Adventures & Academics, Specialized

Recreation Camp and the pool lifeguards) compete in a cardboard boat race across the lap pool.

Themed-boats are made of masking tape, cardboard, and white glue. Each boat is large enough

to carry a camp leader across the pool and back. Awards are given both to the race winner and

to the camp with the most creative theme. Campers from afternoon camps attend the race dur-

ing camp hours. Morning-only campers are encouraged to attend the event with their parents or

guardians to participate in the boat parade and support their counselors in the cheering section.

Specialized Recreation Summer Camp

This summer camp is specifically designed for children, teens and

young adults who have special needs. Our professionally trained

staff creates a loving and nurturing environment for your child.

Emphasis is placed on social interaction, recreational and

educational activities, community involvement and weekly

teens and young adults help to develop independent living skills

such as shopping, cooking, social skills and environmental

education.

SERVICES OF A PERSONAL NATURE: The Camp does not provide

assistance in eating and toileting and although our staff/volunteer

to camper ratio is very high (3 to 1), this does not mean that we

are able to provide 1 to 1 care for your child during the camp.

Register separately for trips. Trips include kayaking at Lake

Chabot, Cardboard Boat Races, and the Oakland Zoo. Registration

cost includes $25 supply fee.

Join us for one or more of our creative arts adventures at the

Shadelands Art Center. Songs and music are the inspiration this

year for our theme-based arts sessions. Let the musical themes

inspire you by creating new worlds by painting, acting and creating

special music. We will explore all of the creative art forms, but it’s

up to you to imagine how each of these worlds should look, sound

and feel. Bring both snacks and a lunch plus drink each day. Wear

suMMer ArT CAMp: “dOWN By The seA”

What kind of “waterful” world can you create? What kind of

creatures live near and under your sea? On the beach--crabs, turtles

or sunbathers? What’s on the water--ships, surfers or pirates?

What’s under the water-whales or merpeople? You get to decide and

create these things by drawing, painting and sculpting. Later in the

day use your acting and music skills to make your sea come to life.

suMMer ArT CAMp: “Over IN The MeAdOW . . .”

The meadow is full of life and we are going to have fun creating and

making animals and plants that live in our world. Does your meadow

have rabbits? Snakes? Turtles? Bees? Flowers? Or trees? We will

learn how to protect our meadow life through recycling and making

creatures from recycled materials. In the afternoon decide how to act

out meadow life. What kind of music will you make in your meadow?

Class 24691 Mon-Fri 9:00am-3:00pm 8/4-8/8

suMMer ArT CAMp: “up, up ANd AWAy”

Outer space is the perfect place to see and make wonderful and

beautiful things. How will you travel up and away? Will you make a

plane, a rocket, a special bird, a magic carpet or a hot air balloon?

What type of world will you visit in the sky? A plant with aliens?

A magical kingdom in the sky? We will be drawing, painting and

sculpting something to travel in and our special land in the sky. Later

you can become the creatures of this land and sing their songs.

Class 24692 Mon-Fri 9:00am-3:00pm 8/11-8/15

suMMer ArT CAMp: “sOMeWhere Over The rAINBOW”

If you could fly over the rainbow, what kind of world would you find?

What type of creatures would live there? Make your own special

kingdom through different art techniques and materials to create this

world. Will you make a castle with magical creatures? Will you make

a place where all the creatures are made from food? What kind of

music will they have in this world and how will these creatures act?
