Also honored at the banquet were city employees receiving service awards. Recocniled for five years of city service were Detective Douglas Sapplncton, Pfc. Fred Murray and Cpl. Daniel O'Neil. Ten-year service awards were presented to Danny Biake and two members of thlf Public Works Department, crew leader Norman Lockerman and equip-ment operator Kenneth Hall. Fifteen-year pins were awarded to Cpl. Thomas Miskell and Sgt. Kenneth Stair. City Manager James K. Giese was recognized for his twenty years of service to the city.

Greenbelt After working for Anne Arun
del County for a year, Blake came to Greenbelt. He Intended to work for Greenbelt's police department for five years, since Greenbelt is known as an excellent training department, and then pursue his ambition to become a U.S. Marshal. But Blake is a .. '!war baby" aruJ the competition was tough. The first time he applied for a job as a U.S. Marshal, the policy was to hire minorities. Two years Ja. ter he applied again, but the policy waa to hire women. So Danny Blake built his career as a Greenbelt police officer and, according to VanValkenburgh, "he's an obtstanding· cop."
The Carpenter Blake resigned from the de
partment in 1979 when he endeavored to move to the Eastern Shore to work as a carpenter, a trade which he loves almost as much as P'llice work. "I love to build things and I love drawing and drafting. I still do carpentry for my neighbors.'' But while working dn the Eastern Shore, Blake was bitten by a tick and contracted Rocky Mountain IPOtted fever. He spent over a month In intensive care. When be recovered, he decided that pollee work was just as safe a• anythlnc else he enjoyed doing and came back to Greenbelt.
Blake describes police work as "something you get in your blood.'' He says he never thinks about being killed, that getting shot is a risk of the job; just as being burned Ia a risk of being a welder, or being cut with a knife is a risk of being a cook. 'You have to WANT to be a policeman. I love patrolling and deallnc with people. 1 would never want to be off the streets unleu I retired. Then I'd like to be a high aheritr in West Virclnla."
Two Worrlee Blake IAYI that in patrol work
he doea have two worries; one is to keep hla ahift commander out of trouble by doing what he is supposed to do "I want my ahift commander to trust me. I don't want him to have to worry about Blake screwlnc up when there may be other oflleera he really has to worry about." The other is gettinc to work on time. He alleviates this concern by coming In about two houra early.
Blake reiterates his belief about putting other people before hlmaelf, even when he's the authority. "I try to treat everybody I meet better than I expect to be treated. The cltizena pay my Alary and I owe them due respect." Blake always attempt~ to. ahow people reapett, even when he Ia enforcinll the law. He saya he triea npt to put peopl~ on the Rpot or to llf'littl~ them.

of owners is expected to meet forrtlal objections from city council during its regu· tar meeting on April. 4. The reason: The resulting new property line would cut through one of the apartment buildings, aa shown in the accompanying map. In the words of City Manager James Gfese, ". . . it does seem to be an illogical placement of a property line." Aside from any question of logic, homeowners of the adjacent (and re\ated) Greentlriar condominiums see the proposed dissection of the building aa a threat to their own property values.
The 76 units that Greenbriar Aaaoclate1 i1 to keep are In that part of Glen Oaka eaet of Mandan Road, bordered on the 10uth by Greenbelt Road, on the north by vacant Board of Educat.lon land, and on the eaat by Goddard Space Flight Center. The 75 units would include orie entire U-shaped atruetura at the lOUth end near GreenM'It Road, and 0!11• lee onl::r of a aeeond U-tlhapU struetura (7509 Mandan Road). 'nle reat of that second atructure would be owned by Greenbelt Realty Corp. The controveraial property' line would cut through the part of the structure at which the ler: .and base of the "U" join.
Giese,·· In written comments, told council that "It certainly is possible to divide the property In a more lofical manner, althoup:h the number of units owned by each of the two partlea might have to be changed. It aeema to me that, ae a ceneral practice the county should lnaiat on logical property llnes between houslnp: units. For this reaeon, It is aur:reated that council recommend denial of the variance.
