It is also recommended to re-pot every so often, particularly when the growing medium has “broken down” and is retaining too much moisture. Remove any containers with an abundance of decaying plant matter such as decayed bulbs and roots, which provide an excellent food source for fungus gnat larvae.

You may feel that one call from your pest control professional should take care of the problem for the whole season. Not so, industry experts say.

We understand that you are busy operating your business and pest control is probably not on the top of your list. However, without regular pest control service, your business may suffer if a customer spots a pest. Or, if the health inspec-tor fi nds an infraction.

Through extensive training, our technicians are like pest detectives! Opportunities abound for pest prob-lems to develop and our technicians can find pest-producing situations even before a problem happens. That’s why regular service is so important.

In most commercial buildings, there are at least one or two live plants used for decoration. Out of these plants can come a nuisance pest,

the fungus gnat. These tiny,

delicate fl ying insects about 1/8” long can be seen crawling along the surface of plants as plants are watered. The larvae are wormlike and translucent, with a black head capsule, and live in the growing medium of houseplants. Adult fungus gnats actually do not damage plants, but they are a nui-sance.

Female fungus gnats can lay up to 200 eggs on the soil surface. The immature fungus gnats are white, translucent larvae with shiny black heads and cause damage to roots of infested plants by feeding on organic matter around plants. Plants in heavy peat moss are particularly

susceptible to this pest. The best way to prevent new or

future infestations of fungus gnats is to follow proper watering practices

for your plants. In winter, plants do not require as much water as at other times of the year. Fungus gnats are more of a problem in the winter, most likely due to

over watering. Whenever possible, allow soil surfaces to dry completely between waterings. This will kill the larvae through desiccation as well as help prevent future problems. It is also recommended to re-pot every so often, particularly when the growing medium has “broken down” and is retaining too much moisture. Remove any containers with an abundance of decaying plant matter such as decayed bulbs and roots, which provide an excellent food source for fungus gnat larvae.

Ask UsQ. One would think that during the winter, pests would become less of a problem. Why are we seeing an occasional roach during the winter?A. Outdoor pest populations are usually reduced during the winter but populations indoors, if left untreated, can become serious problems. A small infestation of cockroaches, for example, can quickly grow and get out of hand.

That’s why regular pest control inspec-tions are vital to any business. In a routine inspec-tion, our technicians will look in places not usually examined to fi nd evidence of pests. Then, if they fi nd signs of pests, they will treat the area with approved pest control materials to eliminate the infestation.

SAMPLEYou Can Help Prevent Pests

Understanding what attracts insects and other pests to your business can be just the information

you need to keep them out. If, however, pests become a problem in and around your establishment, feel free to give us a call and we’ll use our in-depth knowledge and professional tools to see that the pests are kept out. Here are some tips for pest prevention.

Trim bushes and ornamental plants so they do not touch the sides of the building. When plants come in contact with your building, they provide a superhighway for insects to enter!

When planting new plants, do not place them against the foundation. Rather, plant them one to two feet away.

Repair leaking gutters and other sources of moisture. One of the

insect’s life requirements is moisture and they are at-tracted to continually moist areas.

When placing mulch around your building, do not spread it against the

foundation. The moisture retaining quality of mulch

makes it particularly attractive to crawling insects.

Walk around the building and look for openings in siding, around windows and doors. Using a clear acrylic caulk, seal these cracks and crevices to keep insects out.

Lighting attracts insects and other pests that feed on these insects. Mercury vapor lights are highly attractive to insects. Use yellow “bug” lights around your building because they attract fewer insects.
