CITY TRAVEL & TOURISM IMPACT 2017 THE AUTHORITY ON WORLD TRAVEL & TOURISM Travel & Tourism generated €7.1 billion in Barcelona in 2016 accounting for 5.3% of the city’s GDP, but 12.4% of Travel & Tourism’s contribution to GDP within Spain. Unlike most other cities where share of employment is usually larger than share of GDP, in Barcelona, the contribution to employment is slightly lower, at 4.9% of total city employment. Over each of the next 10 years, Barcelona’s contribution from Travel & Tourism is expected to grow by 4.4% reaching €9.7 billion. With other industries within the city also growing, the share of contribution is set to remain unchanged at 5.3%. Employment growth is expected to take place at the lower rate of 0.8% per annum adding 9,000 jobs by 2026. Barcelona was one of the cities which experienced an anti- tourism backlash in Europe over the summer of 2017. News and media focused particularly on tensions in the relationships between residents and visitors. The city, a popular stop on European cruise itineraries, had over 15 million visitor arrivals in 2016, with tourists outnumbering residents by 2.8 to 1. This ratio of visitors to residents places Barcelona only among the very middle of the cities in our study on this measure, however. While international visitor arrivals have increased by 33% in the 10 years to 2016, there are also ten other European cities in this study where international arrivals have increased by a greater proportion in the same time. Indeed, Barcelona is highly reliant on international demand, with 81.9% of tourism revenue coming from spending by foreign visitors. This dominance of the international market is much higher for the city than it is for Spain as a whole. The US and other European countries form the main source markets. With pressures already on the local communities in Barcelona, the sector will need to ensure that the benefits of Travel & Tourism are fully maximised for the city’s residents. Travel & Tourism generated €7.1 billion in Barcelona in 2016 accounting for 5.3% of the city’s GDP, but 12.4% of Travel & Tourism’s contribution to GDP within Spain. Unlike most other cities where share of employment is usually larger than share of GDP, in Barcelona, the contribution to employment is slightly lower, at 4.9% of total city employment.

Over each of the next 10 years, Barcelona’s contribution from Travel & Tourism is expected to grow by 4.4% reaching €9.7 billion. With other industries within the city also growing, the share of contribution is set to remain unchanged at 5.3%. Employment growth is expected to take place at the lower rate of 0.8% per annum adding 9,000 jobs by 2026.

Barcelona was one of the cities which experienced an anti-tourism backlash in Europe over the summer of 2017. News and media focused particularly on tensions in the relationships between residents and visitors.
