BUSINESS: 30 TRADERS GRADUATE
InformaltradersgraduateMANDLA MAHASHE
“Knowledge applied is power,” .That was the keymessage at the
recent graduation ceremony atthe Informal Traders Upliftment Pro-
gramme in Khayelitsha.About 30 traders from around
were awarded for their participa-tion in the pilot project estab-lished by the Wholesale andRetail SETA and the depart-ment of small business devel-opment.
The course in entrepre-neurship was facilitated bythe FalseBayCollege through
their Centre for Entrepreneur-ship (CFE).According to CFEmanager Steve Reid the
coursewas rolled out inamonthandconsist-ed of 10 modules.
Not end of the road“We are certain that the traders that are
part of this project will see the fruits of theknowledge they gained through this course.Weunderstand that for a long time inform-
al traders were ignored in the business sec-tor and by receiving such training, we wantto make sure that they grow in business,”said Reid. The course was rolled out in other provin-
ces such as the Eastern Cape and KZN andwe see traders receive a R9000 stipend for
their businesses.According to Nozipo Sibisi from WR SE-
TA, graduation in the project is not the end.“The project won’t end with this graduationbut with continued support in the form ofmonitoring and mentorships,” she said. She said that shewas happy to see that the
vendors were very passionate and dedicatedafter receiving reports of 100% attendanceduring the course.“I’m glad to know that the traders are tak-
ing the development of their businesses seri-ously and that their aim was not to pocketthe stipend and run with it.
A milestoneAs a country we need to see informal trad-
ers taking their rightful place as the catalystfor business development,” she said.Guest speaker on the day was Lindelani
Sibisi from Tenga International who urgedthe traders to use the information they re-ceived in the course.“This is a milestone for you,” he said ad-
dressing the traders. “You were neglectedbefore but they didn’t know that the inform-al trade industry isworthR1, 7 billionayear. You are literally sitting in a lot of money
and these programme will help you capital-ise on this”,” she said tomuchapplause fromthe graduates.Nombulelo Fuyizilo, a meat trader, said
that they have learnt a lot through thecourse and are hoping to learn more.V See the picture on page 3.

When do you realiseyour potential in life? What are we created to do.
What is an awakened person. I knowwhat you are going to say. You aregoing to say it is someone like DalaiLama–a Buddha. Are any of us awak-ened. Again I know whatyou going to say.
You are going to saywe are. But are we?Many think we arebecause we can speaktsostsi taal. That’s mygripe with manypeople. We have notchanged. We are still thesame.
We are still like tsotsis. All we wantto do is to take, take, take.
Take from someone else. Take fromour enemies. And if you talk like that, you are awakened. Think about it.Does an awakened person take fromanother.
As you sit there thinking about yourlife, if so, what?
Don’t tell me you are thinking abouttaking from someone else, as if thatwill restore your soul. Because I don’tthink it will.
We are not created to take. We arecreated to create. If you take, and itsover, what will your next move bethen? Will you take. You will keep ontaking. And others will have to defendthemselves.
They will have to build walls aroundtheir properties. And what does thistell you? Does it not tell you that oursociety is a society of takers? We have
walls all around us. That is whysecurity is such a lucrative business.
It is because we are not awakened. We believe in taking from others.
We do not believe in creating thingsfor ourselves. We think it is not cool
to do that. What if you fail? Forsure, what if you do?
Will that be the end of theworld? I don’t think so. Life islong. And yet at the same time it
is short.Which meansyou can taketime to create
your thing. If you fail, keep on trying. That’s not a crime.
At the same time it is short becauseif you do not utilise your time con-structively, you will lose out. Ofcourse those that lose out are thosethat do not believe in creating thingsfor themselves. They are those thatsay, “I am incapable.” “I can’t!” “I’museless.” They are those that believethey are bewitched. Or, they are black.
“Blacks do not know how to dothings for themselves.” God did notendow them with the same powers aswhites, or Japanese, or, Chinese. Butawakened persons do not think likethat. They know what it takes to dothings for themselves. It is persever-ance. Self-discipline. Belief. And desire. What do you want to have? What doyou want to be? Awakened personsthink like that. And proceed to followtheir bliss. They don’t wanna take. They create. Stay positive.

Sizwe Banzi back on stage
Following its resounding success in theUnited States earlier this year, theSouth African theatre classic Sizwe
Banzi is Dead, will be on stage at the BaxterFlipside until Saturday 12 September.
It is directed by John Kani and stars hisson Atandwa Kani and Mncedisi Shabangu.
Forty years ago, John Kani and WinstonNtshonawon the Best Actor TonyAward fortheir performances in the play, which theyco-created with Athol Fugard.
It is also almost a decade after Kani andNtshona reprised their roles in the play atthe Baxter Theatre.
The award-winning and iconic productionis about the universal struggle for humandignity. A blackman in apartheid-era SouthAfrica tries to overcome oppressive workregulations to support his family.
Kani and Ntshona performed the play inSouth Africa, England and on Broadway,
where they jointly won the coveted TonyAwards for Best Actor.
In 1976 they were arrested by the Apart-heid Secret Police and were detained in soli-tary confinement for 23 days. They were on-ly released because of massive demonstra-tions by the arts fraternity all over theworld.
“Sizwe Banzi is Dead became a statementthat articulated the anger of black peopleagainst these laws,” says the triple Honour-ary Doctorate recipient, Kani.
“It’s about the universal struggle of identi-ty, of the dignity of the human being, and re-spect for humanity.”
Tickets cost R120 on Mondays, R130 onTuesday to Thursday and R150 over week-ends. The Baxter Monday special applieswhere patrons pay R120 which includes ameal and the performance. All tickets areavailable through Computicket.

Pubs bust breaking law
Seven liquor establishments werecaught out by undercover officers dur-ing the City’s integrated operations
with the SAPS and the Western Cape Li-quor Authority.
The City of Cape Town’s Liquor Enforce-ment Unit teamed up with the South Afri-can Police Service and the Western Cape Li-quor Authority in recent days to focus oncompliance at night clubs, shebeens andtaverns. The operations focused on estab-lishments in Mitchells Plain, Gugulethu,Philippi East, Lwandle, Nyanga, Belharand Khayelitsha.
Officers inspected a total of 39 premisesand issued spot fines totalling R14 000 forvarious by-law contraventions. They alsoissued 10 compliance notices and confiscat-ed 620 litres of alcohol. In addition, four sus-pects were arrested for selling alcohol ille-gally and contravening the Liquor Act, re-sulting in the closure of seven shebeens in
Lwandle, Khayelitsha, Nyanga and Gugulet-hu.
‘We have started using undercover offi-cers to bait illegal operators and the resultsare clear to see. Alcohol abuse is a major con-tributor to social ills and so we cannot affordto go easy on those who flout the law,”saidAlderman JP Smith.

Six families woke up to a fountain ofsewer spurts on Wednesday morningafter a drain burst, leaving waste mat-
ter flooding their homes in Khayelitsha.Nokuthula Makapela, 35, said she was
woken from her deep sleep by the shouts ofneighbours alerting her to the flowingmessof excreta into her home.
She said she found herself knee-deep intothe mess as she jumped out of bed.
“The waste was all over my house.”The mother of two minor children said
she and her husband had had to take thekids to a relative nearby.
“This has badly affected us. My childrenare still traumatised.
Their uncle, who stays in Greenpointcame and took my children to his house,”she said.
Makapela said her daughter, who suffersfrom epileptic fits, was severely affected bythe latest sewarage burst.
“Her seizures have started again sincethis incident,”.
“She last suffered from the fits in 2012, soI suspect that they were triggered by thespillage,” Makapela said.
Makapela’s children could not go toschool on Thursday as their school uniformbecame soaked.
She could only save their school books.Makapela said they had been staying in
the area since 2011 and had never experi-ence this.
Lwandile Peyi’s shackwas still filledwiththe reek of the sewage when City Vision vi-sited.
“The smell is terrible. I am not happy atall,” Peyi said.
NosiphoLingeni, 38, said all her furniturehas been damaged.
There were also other drains that wereblocked in other sections of the area suchas Sikalekhekhe on Tuesday.
Councillor Amos Komeni, of Ward 93,said all the blocked drains were cleared byThursday.
“We found rocks in the drainswhichwerecausing the blockage. We appeal to resi-dents to ensure that they do not open thedrains because children end up throwingstones inside which cause problems,” Ko-meni said.
Komeni also said the Disaster Risk Man-agement also gave some food parcels to theaffected families and also blankets.

Women can be heads of stateIt is my observation that a woman canjust as effortlessly become a President ofthe Republic of South Africa. Our Constitution underlines that all
mankind is created equal.I am of the view that men and women
are fashioned as equals and since they areshaped equaly, women deserve an oppor-tunity to be the president of the country.
Women can make as high qualitychoices as men.I also believe that current Public
Protector, Advocate Thuli Madonsela cando a great job at being the president ofthe country if she is given the chance.

The current state of shamblesin our country are a headsoreIt is a fact that government parastatalssuch as SAA, Eskom and others arefailing the ordinary citizens of thisbeautiful country, and continue to robthe taxpayers on a number of occasions. To single out that Denel as a govern-
ment parastatal is doing very well isludicrous, the public and the oppositioncannot be told to have a narrow orblinkered overview when doing theirmonitoring and evaluation, but theymust have a broader perspective into allgovernment matters .Many South Africans, including those
in the ruling party know that Eskom isin tatters, but due to political allegiance, they pretend as if everything is runningnormally. Then there is also the South African
Post Office, which is also in the hands ofgovernment, and, as always, in sham-bles.Ordinary citizens of this country,
including students, job seekers, businessand the rest are the bigger loosers inthis shambles, as it is a fact that some oftheir correspondence never reached itsintended destination.I empathise with them as I am person-
ally also not sure if the letters I had sentsince November 1994 through the SApost office ever reached the addressees.Letters contribute to the protection
and conservation of literacy, which isthe ability to write and read.Today, as in the past, letters are used
as a communication tool and as anassessment measure in schools. Why are we still teaching our children
how to write a letter if our Post Office isdysfunctional. In some instances it isdiscouraged to use email or the fax ingovernment correspondence. With the current post office Nelson
Mandela couldn’t have achieved his LLBdegree or received his letters fromWinnie. His letters, law books, assess-ments and tutorials could never havereached the intended destination.Apartheid was a crime against humani-ty, and people should not compare theincomparable, but with the currentshenanigans at Sapo, I would prefer amessage in a bottle, for, at least, ourcurrents are still flowing in the rightdirection.

Bowling for mothers of nationAs Women’s Month draws to a close, itis critically vital to show appreciationtowards the women who are flying theflag inside and outside of the country.Women who ensure that this country
moves forward. This is to thank all women taking care
of the orphans and abandoned childrenand for loving those children as theirown. To the women who run the local soup
kitchens to feed the less fortunate out oflove and not pity.To the women who sacrifice their time
to operate afternoon classes and youthcentres, your efforts are worth the while. To those who operate the Early
Childhood Development centres, wesalute you. We fail to tell women howmuch we love and appreciate them.Accept this token of appreciation;THANK YOU Mbokodo, Enkosi Mama.As we are fast approaching the next
local government election, it is fitting tohighlight a few women who have provenbeyond doubt that they are more thancapable to lead; Belinda Landingwe,Patricia De Lille, Nombeko Ruby Leput-eng, Thandi Manikivana and MamaMafoko.
Dr. Noma-Africa, Helen Zille, PatLekker and Debbie Schafer.Beyond their political line, they have
shown care, love and empathy. Thesociety at large has benefited from theirrole and responsibilities.Women have proven that they are
leaders and carers by nature. We haveseen their leadership in parliamentthrough Mama Baleka Mbethe andThandi Modise. It is encouraging that they don’t lead
to compete with men, they don’t lead toprove a point, but lead to take thisgovernment forward.I love the fact that they know and
respect the men, however, they are firmin putting the voice of women upfront.I thank you all women. Please take this time to educate your
daughters the key principles of beingwomen.Do what Mama Helen Susman and
Lillian Goyi showed you, show them theway, lead them in the right direction.I will forever be grateful for the time
you carry and love the unborn andsacrifice anything for your family.

Modi Maqabaza, of Umanyano Lwabaphulaphuli Initiative handed over the grocery to MamelaNtshekelo, 25, in Makhaza, Khayelitsha, on Friday.
No ID family helpedwith food and cashMBONGISENI MASEKO
A needy family from Makhaza was vi-sited by members of Umanyano Lwa-baphulaphuli Initiative who handed
them groceries and cash on Friday. The family of three children, who have no
Identity Documents (IDs) and birth certifi-cates and their heavily pregnant mother,Nokuzola Ntshekele, also does not have anID.Ntshekele told City Vision that she was
on her way to Tygerberg hospital when shereceived the news of the visit. She has been in Khayelitsha hospital for
the past week andwas transferred to Tyger-berg on the day of the visit.Modi Maqabaza, of Umanyano Lwabaph-
ulaphuli Initiative, said they visited thefamily after they became aware of their direcondition, recently.“We found children sitting alone at home
as their mother who is pregnant was admit-ted in hospital.Theirmother doesnot have an IDandalso
her children do not have IDs and birth cer-tificates.They do not get social grants as a result.
The youngest child, who is two years old, also lives with mental disability. They did not have food when we arrived
there,” Maqabaza said.Maqabaza also said they then approached
local businesses and asked for donationsand about R200 cash for the family.Mamela Ntshekelo, 25, the oldest child,
has a child who also does not have a birthcertificate. The children also stay with their uncle
who is estimated to be 27 years old who isalsomentally unstable after a stabbing inci-dent years ago.Councillor Mpucuko Nguzo, of Ward 95,
said he intervened to see the family gettinghelp.Nguzo said the youngest child, was now
under the care for Social Development andthat they are busywith the process of apply-ing for the IDs and birth certificates for thefamily members.“Their mother tried to apply for IDs but
nothing came out of the applications. We are going to use their uncle’s ID to
register them on the list for indigent fami-lies who receive some groceries,” Nguzosaid.
Destitute woman to get helpJOHNSON MESI
Monde Nqulwana, a ward 89 councillormade a critical intervention and saved thelife of an HIV and TB positive woman inKhayelitsha recently.Mandisa Msali, 44 a resident in RR in-
formal settlement since 2006, is unemployedand is on treatment for both ailments. Sherecently applied for a disability grant withSassa but was turned down.It was then discovered that she was de-
faulting onher treatment due to lackof food. The problem then arises that she was not
taking her medication because she has nofood. She stays with a 16 year old daughter. After she was denied a grant, she said: .
“My situation got worse and I was relyingon neighbours for food.”.According to Sassa, a person qualifies for
a disability grant if the disability is con-firmed by an assessment officer to indicatewhether the disability is permanent or tem-porary.Apparently, there no significant residual
impairment affecting Msali’s ability towork. Tomakematters worse for her, Msalistays in a make-shift shack that has gaping
holes in the walls.“When I go to sleep at night I can literally
see people walking past my house.”Thanks to the intervention of TAC’s com-
munity development workers NonqabaMelani and Nkululeko Rorwana.Thier jobs involves making referrals to
relevant departments that deal with issuesaffecting members of community.“Her case was very different because it
was degrading her human living standard. The conditions where she is staying are notconducive for her health and really neededan urgent intervention’ said Melani.Dumisani Mazeleni, field officer, depart-
ment of Human Settlement said they havebeen alerted to the plight of Msali, and weretrying to assist with buildingmaterial to re-build her house as the conditions were in-humane“We are going to take this information to
our senior manager and will definitely takethe necessary steps to help Msali”.Nqulwana said he was “confident Msali
will receive a relief grant, while they areassessing her problem. They will also pro-vide her with 28 metal sheets to rebuild herhouse.

Iqhayiya girls a ‘pride’ of the lotZILA MKONTO
In their own words, they say they are abunch of winners! It’s not a girly bragging but a fact, if
you look closely at their results. The well-travelled girls from Iqhayiya
High School in Khayelitsha have cut them-selves a niche in rugby circles, where theyplay for the Western Province select teamsin under-16 and under-18.CoachThembani “NtsimbiAyigobi”Ngu-
belanga hailed his girls as “heroes” whenthey returned from a recent trip in Joziwhere they chalked an hundred per centwin record.Playing against Blue Bulls they pasted an
impressive 75-5 win, blasted a hapless Lim-popo team 88-0 and again beat Bulls 67-7 toclaim a trophy in Sevens under-16 finals.Nowwith all those victories a thing of the
past, the girls are ready to hit the road oncemore. On September 12 they are off to East Lon-
donwhere theywill face a Border team theyhad already beaten in one of their travels.Captain Thandile Mazwi promised that
they will bring more glory from their trip.“We are conditioned to win and we will
return in a happy mood,” sad Thandile.Iqhayiya High School principal Ayanda
Mbava said she was very proud of “mygirls”.“They are putting Khayelitsha and our
school on themap. They are also rolemodelsfor young girls who look up to them. Wemust encourage girls to participate in allsorts of sports,” she said. The team that comprises of Ncediswa ma-
hinjana, Asavela Siswana, Zintle Nonkasa-na, Asanda Dudumashe, Sinesisa Vuso, Lin-diwe Skeyi, Thandile Mazwi, Zizipho Qhabaand Lihle Mzimkhulu, certainly deserves tohave their names written in letters of goldfor they have taken women rugby to greaterheights in the townships and beyond.
Iqhayiya High rugby coach Thembani Ngubelanga with his marauding players
