civic city - results thinkathon woensel-west
TRANSCRIPT
What if
Citizens designed their own smart city?
To find out..
We organized a thinkaton in Eindhoven´s
‘notorious’ Woensel-West district
Thinkaton
We sat down with them, prioritized their problems, and
let them come up with ‘smart solutions’ themselves
The results were impressive
None of their problems were
related to ‘efficiency’ (traffic jams,
waste collection, park maintenance etc.)
They were all related to the
social character of the
neighborhood
“There is no
cohesion in the
neighborhood”
“The elderly are lonely and feel useless”
“It’s not safe here”“People with issues are socially isolated”
“Not everyone speaks
Dutch”
There’s too many ‘islands’ and no real interaction amongst citizens
“One should start taking initiative”
“The district is under
construction, yet we should feel at home..”
An area not yet covered by
today’s smart city applications
Their solutions?
#1
Info-beacon
A central point or moving object in
the neighborhood that people can
upload their stories to. Bringing them
from inside the houses to the outside.
Connecting people
Their solutions?
#2
Their solutions?Routes that lead to shared
stories…
Their solutions?
Getting people out of their homes and interacting with each other by adding routes
through the neighborhood. Routes that offer a
special experience at different locations.
Experiences that they can share with each other.
Shared history/experiences are what define a relation.
#3
A network of pick up points,
formed by the elderly
Engaging elderly and getting them
out of social isolation by letting them
volunteer as a package delivery / pick
up point for neighbors. Younger
working people will visit their homes
to collect their package.
#4
Battle for the most energy
efficient district
Making people in one block/district
work together in reaching a common
goal. In this case becoming the most
energy efficient block/district.
These were just some of the
ideas citizens came up with in
our 2 hour Thinkathon….
Curious what they will come up
with in 2 days?
Come visit our accelerator in
Eindhoven. (30 September, 1st of October)
And of course, come see
us at the DDW
