October 30Mozart & BrucknerJay Friedman conductor mozart Symphony No. 35 (Haffner)bruckner Symphony No. 7 CSO Principal Trombone Jay Friedman leads the Civic Orchestra in a performance of two beloved symphonies by Mozart and Bruckner. Mozart’s celebratory Haffner Symphony demonstrates his transition from the party music of courtly Salzburg to his more serious compositions in the musical hub of Vienna. Bruckner’s Seventh Symphony, the composer’s memorial to Wagner, was the first that received widespread acclaim during Bruckner’s lifetime and launched him to fame.

January 22Mahler Symphony No. 1Rafael Payare conductor bartÓk Suite from The Miraculous Mandarinmahler Symphony No. 1Acclaimed Venezuelan conductor Rafael Payare conducts a devilishly rhythmic suite of music from Bartók’s ballet, The Miraculous Mandarin. Mahler’s First Symphony foretells the symphonic master’s ability to write with a near-infinite orchestral color palette. Travelling into uncharted tonal territory, it brims with bird calls, love songs and German folk influences.

February 26Brahms Symphony No. 2Christoph Eschenbach conductor wagner Overture to Tannhäuserschoenberg Chamber Symphony No. 1 brahms Symphony No. 2 Legendary German conductor Christoph Eschenbach returns to lead the Civic Orchestra in a program of works by German and Austrian composers. Schoenberg’s single-movement Chamber Symphony is densely packed with lush harmonies. Brahms’ Symphony No. 2, with its dancing third movement and rousing finale, evokes images of the idyllic Austrian countryside where it was composed.

April 9Beethoven & RachmaninovErina Yashima conductor beethoven Symphony No. 4rachmaninov Symphony No. 2Sir Georg Solti Conducting Apprentice Erina Yashima leads this performance of a duo of symphonies by two masters of the Classical and Romantic eras. Beethoven’s graceful and spontaneous Fourth Symphony stands in contrast to his more serious Third and Fifth. Rachmaninov’s Second Symphony, widely regarded as his most popular, showcases the composer’s brilliant gift for lush melodic writing.

April 30Strauss & TchaikovskyKen-David Masur conductor finnis The Air, Turning (u.s. premiere)strauss Suite from Der Rosenkavaliertchaikovsky Symphony No. 6 (Pathétique)Assistant conductor for the Boston Symphony Ken-David Masur conducts Tchaikovsky’s Sixth Symphony, which premiered just a week before the composer’s death. Finnis’ The Air, Turning, which received its world premiere by the BBC Scottish Symphony in February 2017, weaves instrumental lines against blocks of tonal colors, developing lattices of sound moving in waves to create subtly shifting harmonies.

June 4Holst’s The PlanetsFrancesco Lecce-Chong conductor Maya Lahyani mezzo-sopranoWomen of Bella Voce chorusAndrew Lewis artistic director bernstein Symphony No. 1 (Jeremiah)holst The PlanetsNewly appointed music director of the Eugene Symphony, Francesco Lecce-Chong conducts this program beginning with Bernstein’s Jeremiah Symphony, a work that explores the composer’s Jewish heritage. Holst’s enduringly popular orchestral suite The Planets, influenced by the astrological significance of Earth’s seven neighbors, concludes the 2017/18 Civic Orchestra season.
