How the war began The war started when the south
attacked Fort Sumter in South Carolina On April 12, 1861.

Union States Of America (North) The president of the Union was Abraham
Lincoln. The North had all the major buildings to build supplies for the army. The union soldiers were also called Yankees. The first Union general was McClellan who was later replaced by Grant.

Confederate States of America (South)
The president of the Confederate states was Jefferson Davis. The two confederate generals were Lee and Jackson. The South was agricultural and made money by growing cash crops. They were also called Rebels.

Antietam The battle of Antietam started on
September 17, 1862. the battle occurred in Maryland. The South lost 12,000 soldiers and the North lost 12,000 soldiers so the battle of Antietam ended in a tie.

The First and Second Bull Run
Both Battles happened in Virginia. The First Bull Run was on July 21, 1861 and the Second one on August 29-30, 1862. All together the South lost 11,000 soldiers and the North lost 11,200 all together. The north was defeated.

Seven Days’ Battle The Seven Days’ Battle
was on June 26- July 1, 1862. The battle took place at Virginia. The South lost 20,000 soldiers and the North lost 16,000. The Southern Counterattack was successful.

Vicksburg The battle of Vicksburg Was on May
22-July 4, 1863. The battle was in Mississippi. 10,000 Confederate soldiers died and 9,000 Union soldiers died. The northern attack was successful. This battle made the Union had control of the Mississippi River.

Gettysburg The battle of Gettysburg was on July
1-3, 1863. The battle was in Pennsylvania. 23,000 Confederate soldiers died and 19,000 union soldiers died and the southern attack was defeated.

Surrender at Appomattox By spring, Lee’s army was also out of
supplies. Many were barefooted. The army Could no longer protect Richmond, VA. On April 9, 1865 general Robert E. Lee surrendered to Ulysses S. Grant at Appomattox Courthouse, Virginia.
