CIVIL WAR EFFECTS Objective: Students will be able synthesize information learned through the study of primary sources & maps. Purpose: Practice examining primary source material. Standard(s): Historical Thinking Skill: Evaluation & Synthesis. Analysis & Interpretation PHOTOS OF THE CIVIL WAR WARM-UP: QUICK-WRITE Read, listen, and follow along with the letter by Sullivan Ballou. After listening, write a letter as if you were a soldier in the Civil War, about to fight, writing home in what may be your last letter or communication with your family. Write at least a half (1/2) page. ACTIVITY: AMERICAN CIVIL WAR MAP Directions: 1. Use the maps on pages 373, 379, 385, 386, 404, 407, and Color the Union, Confederacy, Border States, U.S. Territories, and West Virginia. 3. Use 5 different colors that represent each of #2 above. 4. Label the following places on your map: Capital cities of North & South. Name of battle, year, and who won (RED=Confederate, BLUE=U.S.) ASSESSMENT: CARTOON ANALYSIS & ADVERTISEMENT Read the directions and answer the three (3) questions by writing in complete sentences. When finished with the three (3) questions, begin work on the Activity at the bottom of the page (as written on the worksheet): Imagine that you are President Lincoln and are searching for a new commander of the Union Army. Write a help-wanted advertisement for a commanding general. Describe what qualifications you are looking for. Remember to consider General McClellans faults and mistakes when you write your advertisement. Insubordinate to Lincoln, had poor military strategy; Peninsular Campaign ended in failure. EXTRA CREDIT OPPORTUNITIES 1. Missing Longhorn Return my wooden longhorn (Waxer / 1221) and receive TWENTY (20) Extra Credit Points !!! 2. Receive TEN (10) Extra Credit points if you bring in ONE (1) unopened box of Tissue Paper. Only ONE (1) Per Quarter Per Student. Must be Unopened & Unused.
