Introduction Photographs and images bombard us every day. Think about how we can easily take a photograph of our friends, our cat, or a sporting event with just a click of the cell phone. Obviously, this has not always been the case. The Civil War, also known as the War Between the States, was the first major conflict that the camera was utilized to record history. Task Instead of just reading about the Civil War, you will look at the war through the eye of the camera. This will allow you to see the different parts of the war as it truly was. True, these are black and white pictures but it will allow you to put real people to the tragedy of our worst war as a nation. Provide a caption of what the photograph is and also provide a reference of where the image was located (just like what has been done throughout this lesson with the pictures). Evaluation To finish the PowerPoint presentation or Webpage, of the ten images or photos that you found pick your top three. Put them on an extra slide or a different part of the webpage and explain the following: What parts of the image did you find interesting? Why was each image in your top 3 images? How was the topic of each of your top 3 images important to the Civil War?

Internet Safety and Copyright My district if very particular with Internet Safety. It is to the point that we as teachers are not allowed to defragment our computers. Therefore, Google images is blocked on our computers not to mention YouTube and others. With that in mind, I have limited this activity to the safe confines of the Library of Congress webpage. It has a great collection of Civil War images and I do not have to worry about the safety issues as much with it. I addressed the copyright issue earlier in the presentation for the students. They will be required to cite where they copied the images from for their presentations.
