you with any travel orders, awards or other payroll problems that you might have. Now he will have help when needed and be able to go on vacation even when there is payroll. So when you see Kathleen please give her a big welcome to the DFMWR family. other news worthy items is that Pat Roediger’s horse is home from being trained and many of the staff took annual leave during the Thanksgiving holiday, including me. Shelley roten, marketing assistantHi, I’m Shelley Roten (pronounced Rho-ten, and no relation to rotten). I like to tell people that I’m married to a real JAG off, otherwise known as a Judge Advocate GeneralOfficer. I married my college sweetheart, Chris, in May 2006 and two weeks later he reported to the Army (some honeymoon, right?). So that’s how I eventually ended up at Fort Riley. Before Kansas we lived in South Carolina (stationed at Fort Jackson), Texas and oklahoma.

I was born a Texan and raised a Sooner. I’m from dallas and Chris is from Fort Worth, but we met at OU. What are the odds, right? We’re happy to be back in Big 12 Country. We live here on post in one of the old historic homes with our 2 year old son, Hayden, and our fluff ball cat, Tiki.

Danielle KavanCommercial Sponsorship CoordinatorMy name is danielle Kavan and I’m from omaha, Neb. , which should tell you I’ma diehard Husker fan. I enjoy strolling through the aisles at Target and ordering shoes online. The best thing about online shopping is getting excited about the purchase twice; there’s the anticipation right after theorder and then the arrival of the package on my porch a few days later.

I’ve been known to forget that I ordered something, making my self-purchased gift even more thrilling. In addition to my love of shoes, I also adore my two corgis, Bella and Ellie. I, like Shelley, am a military spouse. My husband is a medical platoon leader and hopes to become a PA (Physician’s Assistant) at some point in his Army career. I’ve already had so many positive experiences in the Marketing Department at MWR and look forward to a future here.

Special Events: duane Clayton, one of our Rec Programmers, will take time off over the Christmas holidays to get married. His fiancée, Skylea Wright, has been attending and helping at numerous special events

graduated high school in Idaho where he also enjoyed being a hunting guide. Cody has always had an affinity for the outdoors and has grown up to be an avid sports-man. Whether fishing, camping, or hunting, Cody’s ideal day involves being outside. Being a consummate competitor, Cody has joined the semi-pro arena football team the Junction City Force. He is a ben-eficial member of the ODR staff and is a pleasure to work with. “I have enjoyed theopportunities that MWR has given me to work outdoors with Soldiers and their Families,” said Tubbs.

and emphasizes unit cohesion and team building at the platoon level. The current Warrior Adventure Quest menu consists of a high and low ropes course at K-State, IBEX climbing gym, paintball (which is the most requested), adventure racing, skeet and trap, rockwall, canoeing, kayak-ing, and biking. We have also had the opportunity to offer Nascar Ride-a-longs. The newest addition to the menu is an ATV course that is sure to be a hit.

Cody Tubbs has been a part of Ft. Riley’s DFMWR family as a Recre-ation Assistant for outdoor Recre-ation since March. He grew up and

Watch out for those guys with the sledgehammers! Recently, Custer hill Bowling Center underwent a small renovation in which three employees volunteered to remove the walls surrounding the booths. Walter Keaton, Joshua Pollen andSteve Stanley went above and beyond the call of duty to knock down and carry the bricks out piece by piece. The process took two weeks and a total of over 10 trucks full, or 20,000 pounds of brick, were hauled out of the center. Theend result was an improved facility with significantly more floor space.

riley’s Conference Centerout with the old! After months of building anticipation, Riley’s Conference Center will be closed from Jan. 4 to 27 for carpet replacement. New carpet will give the facility a more upscale appearance and will be much more inviting overall. If you get a chance, also peek out back and check out the new Gazebo which was installed at the end of November.

let’s get it startedIf you are like most people, you have at some point promised, pledged, and vowed to get healthier. January is the time to set New Year’s Resolutions and January also happens to be Family Fit Lifestyle Month. Family Fit Lifestyle Month is all about making moderate changes in your daily activities, and including your entire family in order to enjoy the long term benefits of a healthierfamily life.

CelebrationsBoth Forsyth CDC and Whitside CDC held Fall celebrations on Oct. 22. It was great to see so many parents involved with their children! Thank you to our staff for making these events so much fun for our children and parents. Both pro-grams also invited parents back for special luncheons prior to the Thanksgiving holiday. The staff from Whitside CDC also helped organize a food drive. Dona-tions were taken to The Caring Place in Junction City by the Pre-K program. These are great examples of how our staff are building positive relationships with our families and communities.

naEyC accreditation newsForsyth CdC has successfully completed their application for NAEYC Accreditation. Staff are working hard to complete the candidacy requirements. Keep up the great work! Whitside CDC is working hard as well. The staff came together Nov. 19 to work on portfolios. Their application has been submitted and we are waiting for the acceptance notification. Warren East CDC will be submitting their application soon, too.

ConstructionWarren Road CDC is still under renovation, but the new roof is com-plete! There is still a lot of work to be done on the inside but we are looking forward to reopening in 2011. When the CDC reopens it will be sporting new floors, ceilings, lighting, cabinets and paint. There will also be a new reception area and an updated employee break room.

The CYSS Sports and Fitness (SF) program strives to achieve a balanced and enriched program attractive to children and youth. The SF Program offer services for children ages 3 to 18 years in the following four Services Areas: Team Sports, Individual Sports, Fitness & Health and outreach.

Amber davis, Assistant director is responsible for Health Promotion and fitness outreach to CDCs, SAS, MST, FCC and the Start Smart Training/observations in CdCs. She oversees outdoor Adventures (Snow tubing, Ice skating, horseback riding, etc), and Family Fitness Nights. She also trains and certifies volunteer coaches for team sports and assembles teams for each season.

Jacob Kelly, Program Associate is responsible for Sports outreach to CdCs, SAS, and FCC. He manages the Start Smart program offered to parents and their children ages 3-5 year olds. The Start Smart program is also offered in our CdCs. Mr. Kelly maintains and marks soccer and baseball fields. He assists with Outdoor Adventures, Family Fitness Nights and the management and oversight of team sports.

Fort Riley School Age Services (SAS) is going through a new accredi-tation agency. The Army has moved from National Afterschool Asso-ciation (NAA) to Council on Accreditation (CoA). The management and staff at SAS for the past year have been working on program development, building staff, parent and child/youth relationships, and gathering documentation for completing the CoA self-study process.

“T-Together, E-Everyone, A-Achieves, M-More”. It takes every one of us to be successful!

Transitioning from the SAS Summer Camp to the Before and After School Program is not easy. one very important area is to make sure that all children files are in order and maintained. During the SAS November Health Inspection, Brittany Toombs (CYPA) and Cassandra Gholson-Brown (Administrative Assistant) showed how dedicated they are to making sure that this inspection would meet all compli-ance outlined in Army Regulation 608-10. No deficiencies were found in the children files! This effort is greatly appreciated and acknowl-edged as the team continues to strive for excellence.

We have all been working hard and now have some new folks to share in the fun.We would like to welcome our newest team members to ACS.

vicky martin, ACS Volunteer Coordinator, ACS Master Trainer, “Army wife” to Cpt. William Martin, who is currently deployed w/ HHC 1SB. She is “Mom” to teen-aged son, Lee who is a junior at MHS. Her interests are psychology, philosophy, and world religions, and contact sports (i.e. basketball and judo.) “Stay out of her way”! She is an avid reader of whatever happens to look good at the time and likes music of various genres. Her heroes are: Abraham Lincoln, Martin Luther King, Jr. and her folks. She is a native of Missouri and has earned a BS in Psychology from Northwest Missouri State University in Maryville in 1998 and an MS in Psych from University of Central Missouri in Warrensburg in 2009. during her military spouse’s career she has lived in Law-ton, Oklahoma; Leavenworth, Kansas; and Waynesville, Missouri prior to moving to Manhattan. She moved to Fort Riley area in January 10, got involved as a volunteer with AFTB and ACS in March. My career has largely been public service or social ser-vices. I have worked in community mental health, acute mental health, and adult corrections as both a Corrections Officer and Substance Abuse Counselor. While I loved all those jobs, it wasn’t my “dream” career. I took my first AFTB class at Ft. Leavenworth and was hooked. ACS and this position give me the ability to serve my country, encourage volunteerism in others, and support soldiers and their Families. It doesn’t get much better than that!

Motto: I am an Army wife and a farmers’ daughter. Tell me it can’t be done and then move and watch me.

aurelia mouton, Employment Readiness Program Assistant She is a military spouse and has been married to her wonderful husband for over 12 years. She originally hails from New orleans, La. (GEAUX SAINTS & LSU) but has learned to adapt to other cul-tures because of their military experience. She has three daughters ages 8, 10 and 12. Aurelia, her husband, three girls and her dog Benji, are each other’s best friends because they all remain the constant in each other’s lives of variables. But they love the military, the people and the experience that they have gained. She is new to the ACS family, but is already making friendships that she hopes will last a lifetime. She is a Christian and loves people, even with their quirks! I also love to read, watch shows that involve suspense (House and Lie to Me are my favorite) and entertain. Her life goals are to be married for 50+ years to the same man, raise three productive and successful women and own her own consulting firm!

Jessica richter, Survivor outreach Services Financial Counselor She moved to Kansas in July from New Jersey where she worked at Army Community Service as Financial Readiness Program Manager. She is an Accredited Financial Counselor with the AFCPE and has provided financial guidance to active duty and retired Army, Navy, and Coast Guard service members and their Families. She is looking forward to getting to know the Fort Riley community. She is married to SSG Ryan Richter and they have a son, Thomas, who is 12.

Benita Edwards, Human Resources, Soldier, Family Assistance Center. Benita is from Alexandria, Va. She is married to Norman Edwards who is also retired and works as a Communication Se-curity Rep based out of Fort Huachuca, Ariz. Norman and Bonita have eight children, one son-in-law and two beautiful grandsons. She served 20 years in the United States Army as a Human Resource Manager. Welcome Aboard!

As we welcomed in the new we now have to say good bye to Jenny mosley, Unit Service Coordinator. Her husband is retiring and they will start the New Year with a new adventure in Florida. We are also saying good bye to mark musleh our Information and Referral guru! He is moving right down the road to IACH. They both have had a positive impact on our ACS organization. They have supported our Soldiers and Families with passion and commitment. They have set the bar high. Good Luck and see you soon!
