From tracks and signals, tostations, viaducts and tunnels, their remit is huge, the effects far reaching. Right now, they’re facing Britain’s biggest challengeshead on. While enabling three millionpassenger journeys every day, not tomention freight traffic, they’re developing a railway that’s fit for the 21st century.

Rail is the greenest, safest form of travel inthe UK. Unsurprisingly, it’s also the busiestit’s been for 60 years. With a predictedgrowth of 30 per cent over the next tenyears, there’s an unprecedented period ofchange ahead, and no doubt there will bemany challenges along the way. To makesure they’re ready for the demands oftomorrow, Network Rail have £34.6bn of investment and will be recruiting 135graduates into a range of disciplines.

No other scheme can offer such a breadthof opportunity for graduate engineers.Already behind some of the most importantprojects in the country, such as the £9bnredevelopment of the West Coast Mainline,Network Rail has big plans for the future. In fact, they’re managing one of the leadingEngineering portfolios in Europe. If you’relucky enough to join them, you could seeyourself becoming part of schemes such

as Crossrail, the single, largest civilengineering project in Europe. It’s a chancefor you to cut your teeth on some of themost exciting work available: work that will literally change the face of Britain.

The Civil Engineering programme isstructured around the Institute of CivilEngineer’s list of core objectives –awareness, knowledge, experience andability. You’ll enjoy development that isbroad ranging and varied. That will meanspending time with contractors andconsultancies, learning how to marry 150-year-old structures with state-of-the-art developments and working on a range of fascinating, exciting projects. With everystep you’ll make a genuine and real impacton what the company delivers.

You’ll become part of a team – that will giveyou the opportunity to see, first-hand, theway the organisation manages, maintains, designs and renews all of their structures, earthworks and property. Problem solvingdoesn’t get much bigger than this. Not only will you need a relevant degree andaccreditation, you’ll also need to possess alogical mind and the ability to work at pace. You’ll succeed if you’re able to think roundchallenges, to balance considerations andto never rely on the easy solution.
