The past twelve months have seen further political and economic uncertainty, terrorist and natural disasters around the world. Perhaps the Grenfell Tower tragedy in some way underlines some of the challenges for UK society and the important role for the construction industry?

Against this back drop, the economy, industry, and our young business (that will complete five years of trading this year) have shown considerable resilience. This past 12 months we have significantly increased our sales from all depots. Our regional branding with county names and our all employee profit share scheme are contributing to the developing culture of our business - Local, Independent, and Expert. The number of ‘word of mouth’ referrals that our business now receives is incredibly pleasing and is highlighted in further detail within the business manager reports.

At the end of 2017 we moved our Somerset depot to an improved facility on the Evercreech Junction Industrial Estate. At the same time relocating our admin offices to a new location. Looking ahead we have further vehicles scheduled for delivery in the Spring and an all new very product centric web site that will go live early in the New Year.

Civils Store now provides a great foundation on which to build. We plan to develop our employee ownership adding to the current “John Lewis Partnership” style profit share to a position where we become a more formally employee owned business. The opening of our next depot could well be the catalyst for this with a restructuring to provide a top company and separate trading businesses with employee ownership. The existing business is already structured with this in mind and as reported in our last newsletter each depot already operates its own stock file, purchase and sales ledgers.

It does appear that the landscape of the materials supply within the Civils sector is changing and that more than ever there is opportunity for independents that know the sector and understand the approach required. We would be pleased to hear from likeminded people with the motivation and expertise to help us further develop our business and become shareholders in it with us.

The ongoing opportunities and challenges of this sector are very much highlighted by the product developments and new product introductions featured by our suppliers on the following pages and highlighted in the contents box opposite. Equally, we hope that the pictures of our facilities and stock holding, along with the notes about our business will help communicate our expertise, can do approach and total commitment to Civil Engineering materials. We welcome all enquiries for the products listed in this newsletter.

We would like to thank all our customers for your great support and look forward to working with you and to being of service in the years ahead. Kevin Hancock Managing Director

Kent depot delivery area

What a year it has been with the Kent Depot consistently and steadily growing its customer base and stock profile. Some of the new items now stocked being SN8 Pipe (refers to the pipe having a ring stiffness not less than 8KN per M2 and being fully compliant with SFA7 Thermoplastics Structured Wall Pipe) and Puriton Barrier Pipe used for the transportation of potable water for New Housing Developments, Factories and Warehouse Extensions in Brownfield Sites.

As well as the new stock products above, we have continued to grow our Twin Wall product range and keep up to 600mm Diameter Twin Wall Carrier Pipe in stock. We have also had a significant sales increase in Brett Landscaping products, and although not all of their range is available from stock we are generally able to collect and deliver to site the next day.

During the past year Sarah joined us as a Sales Negotiator and Mark joined to work in the yard. Starting in December, Jason Godfrey joins the team as our external Sales Manager and looks forward to meeting all of our customers.

It is hard to believe almost another year has passed since our last report from Kent.

We are looking forward to the year ahead, where again our customers will be our main focus - existing & new. This is a very exciting time for the Kent depot. We shall also be starting the New Year with an additional lorry to further support our customers. Investing in the future our first apprentice also joins us in January.

Thank you to all of our customers for the continued support you have shown us for 2017. Here comes Civils Store Kent - “Look out 2018”.

With increased business levels come new staff and I’m pleased to welcome Tom Ashman, who was previously part of the head office admin team and LGV drivers Pete Spacey and Marek Glomski to our team. Everbody within the existing team has gone the extra step this year and have expanded their skill sets to fill in wherever needed. I believe this versatility makes the Somerset depot a stonger team.

We have moved from our existing yard into a new location at the front of Evercreech Junction industrial estate. Our new location will be known as Natterjack Field. The new facilities offer us a better working environment, more space for future expansion, and the chance to offer an increased range of tools, water pipe fittings and consumables. Rest assured we will maintain our hands on, no frills personal approach, and are constantly striving to improve our service.

Somerset branch has enjoyed sustained growth through 2017. We continually expand the product range to meet customers requests and have added products from Mea and Don & Low to our suppliers’ portfolio. Our local customer base keeps increasing, mainly by word of mouth and its always satisfying to hear new customers say “I wish I had been to you first”. We pride ourselves on a no nonsense easy to deal with attitude, that seems to go down well with everybody. Along with developing our service to the small independent merchants, the last year has also seen success with supplying a well know music festival site and being added to the supply chain for Dorset Highways.

2018 will be another milestone in our development, new yard, new offices and a new crane offload vehicle to be added to the fleet. We are relishing the challenge and looking forward to whatever the year may bring.

This year we also took on Tom Lowery as an apprentice, who will be learning all the aspects of working in the yard and the office. We did this because we feel that as a company we need to bring some young people into the business and develop their careers within our industry.

Our goal for the last 12 months was to continue our steady growth and this has been made possible by continuing to keep up the good working relationship with our customers, which we have built up over the last four and a half years.

We have taken on new customers this year including Cumbria County Council, who we provide a wide range of materials including BBA twinwall drainage supplied by Naylor Drainage, gully gratings and manhole covers supplied by Saint-Gobain which are all up to the current Highways specification. This has proved very beneficial to all parties as CCC can count on us to provide the correct product and on time.

We have taken on several new product lines into stock including Mea UK drainage channels, Don&Low geotextiles and Larsen mortars & grouts. These have proved to be very successful and we are working closely with their area representatives in targeting potential new customers. We are always on the look out for any new products

which we feel would further enhance our comprehensive stock profile. In addition to stock , we can supply a vast amount of specialist items , anything from a manhole safety chain to a bespoke separator.

We are currently supplying Metcalfe Plant Hire and L&W Wilson Ltd with specialist grouts and mortars for repair work to a number of bridges and embankments which were damaged during storm Desmond in December 2015.

Looking forward to 2018, I can only see the business continuing to grow as we carry on with our commitment to provide a friendly and reliable service, where our valued customers can think of Civils Store Cumbria as their first choice for civil engineering materials.

Cumbria depot delivery areaThe team at Penrith wishing John Nicholson a happy retirement

CUMBRIA KENT

SOMERSET CORNWALLWelcome to Civils Store Cumbria, this year I took over the position of Business Manager here at Penrith when John Nicholson retired at the end of March. John was a hard act to follow, but I am fortunate to have a very supportive and hardworking team at the depot where we all pull together to get the job done.

It becomes increasingly clear that one of the guiding factors in ongoing progress is that we must remain close to the coal-face and maintain the close and personal contact with all of our customers, and with our supply-chain manufacturers. As we grow, both locally and nationally it is interesting and rewarding to be contacted by suppliers wanting to be a part of this journey ( even those who didn’t want to know originally – you know who you are) and even by new customers who weren’t interested back then either.

We remain committed to those founding principles and plans and we guarantee all staff, customers and suppliers that we shall endeavour to maintain that vision in all of our future operations. Even if we’re not always the best, please never forget that at all times we are trying to be the best – it’s often far better to travel than to arrive.

CUMBRIA KENT

SOMERSET CORNWALL

Blimey, and here we are all of a sudden, four and a half years later – how, when, why did that happen ? All of those plans, ideas and intentions have reached maturity, and are providing all of the success for which we’d hoped. Our growth has been consistent, solid and progressive, combining increased efficiency with an enlarged customer base and an improved roster of suppliers. We are all still learning as we evolve, and we continue to share those improvements with our customers, whilst still maintaining our stated intention of trading with openness and honesty. It is particularly pleasing to see these achievements confirmed with all staff benefitting through profit-share, another element in our original plan.

In November of 2017 we re-located our administration offices to – Office B, Millbrook Depot, Yellingmill Lane, Shepton Mallet, Somerset BA4 4JT. No change to phone number or e-mail addresses. The purpose built office provides a much better facility for our administration team as well as giving us additional valuable space for growth.

The past year has seen us build further on the strengths of our approach with separate ledgers for each of our depots, management accounts produced in house and clear strategies to reduce and resolve queries efficiently. We have maintained our approach of using manufacturers’ codes and descriptions in our stock files and of referring any supplier invoices that do not match our orders in the first instance to depots. We take pride in all aspects of our customer service which very firmly includes administration.

Barnsley based Naylor was founded in 1890 as a clay pipe manufacturer. Clay pipes remain a major part of Naylor’s product offering, although the Naylor of today has become a diverse business manufacturing drainage and other construction products out of clay, plastic and concrete.

What makes our range of clay pipes so special? Our expertise has been built up over more than a century of clay pipe production resulting in an unrivalled product range for different drainage applications including open cut (Densleeve & Denseal Plus) jacking (Denlok ) and chemical pipes (Thermachem)

To complement our range of pipes we also have a variety of versatile, high quality, flexible couplings (Bandseal) used for jointing pipes of both similar and different materials and sizes, repairs and connecting into old pipelines.

Densleeve / Denseal Plus The Naylor Densleeve underground drainage system of plain-end vitrified clay pipes and fittings with flexible sleeve couplings, was developed for building drainage and associated sewerage and is all manufactured to comply with the stringent requirements of BS EN295-1. Naylor Densleeve is available in diameters DN100, 150, 225 and 300; in addition DN200 and 250 are manufactured for key export markets.

The Naylor Denseal Plus with factory fitted push-fit stainless steel sleeves, is a high performance pipe designed for open cut trench – civil engineering projects available from DN375 to DN700 in accordance with EN295-1 System ‘N’ with an extensive range of fittings, including bends, junctions, tapers and access items suitable for drainage applications. Denseal Plus has a high resistance to chemicals and can accommodate controlled discharges of up to 75°C. Due to the high contact pressure a 5 bar seal reduces the risk of root infestation through the joint allowing for pipe installation under mature trees.

Denlok The Naylor Denlok range is a specially developed vitrified clay pipe system to meet the requirements of pipe installation by trenchless construction methods, which include: Micro tunnelling, Guided Auger Boring, Pipe Bursting, Pipe Eating and Slip Lining.

Available from DN150 to DN1000 Denlok is Third Party Certified by: BSI UK and conforms to European Standard: EN 295-10.

Thermachem Naylor Thermachem is the world’s leading thermal shock and chemical resistant vitrified clay drainage system, manufactured from Naylor’s unique Hathernware material.

Thermachem is the only ceramic material suitable for use in the areas which are subjected to intermittent discharges of hot and cold effluents such as hospital sterilization units, boiler blow down drainage, laboratories, food processing and beverage production drainage systems with temperature changes of up to 120 deg c.

Pipes and fittings manufactured from Naylor’s Hathernware material can be used to handle most chemicals and aggressive discharges. Common chemical drainage applications include handling Clean In Place (CIP) drainage in the food and drink, dairy and brewing industries, handling boiler blow down drainage in steam fired power plants, drainage for chemical storage, handling and spill areas, chemical drainage for laboratories and drainage for industry wherever there is a chemical effluent discharge.

Thermachem pipes have a plain ended coupling system which allows it to be seamlessly connected to Naylor’s Densleeve range of standard vitrified clay pipes and fittings. Pipes and fittings are approved to EN295-1 standards by both Benor and BSI.

Plastics Naylor also manufacture Twin Wall Drainage: DN100-1050, Twin Wall Ducting: DN30-600 in coils and sticks, Land Drainage: DN60-160, Structural & non structural duct boxes as well as Environmental products including crates & grids.

The Naylor Densleeve underground drainage

system of plain-end vitrified clay pipes and fittings

with flexible sleeve couplings, was developed for

building drainage and associated sewerage and is

all manufactured to comply with the stringent

requirements of BS EN295.

Densleeve is available in diameters DN100, 150, 225

and 300; in addition DN200 and 250 are

manufactured for key export markets.

When installed in general accordance with the

Naylor Sitework Instructions the Naylor Densleeve

system meets the latest technical requirements of

the Building Regulations, BS8005 and BS8301.

Description

Clayware

Vitrified clay plain-end pipes and fittings, manufactured in accordance with the requirements of BS EN295-1. The standard lengths of pipes are convenient for handling and laying and allow for flexible joints at sufficiently frequent intervals to enable the pipeline to withstand settlement or other ground movement after installation.

Sleeve Couplings

Manufactured in high impact polypropylene with elastomeric seals providing watertight, flexible mechanical joint assemblies, complying with BS EN295-1: System G.

Standard Coupling Seals

These are manufactured from elastomers conforming to the performance requirements of BS EN681-1. EPDM seals supplied as standard; Nitrile seals are also available for use in contaminated ground.

Joint Performance

Densleeve joint assemblies meet all the requirements of BS EN295-1. They accept angular deflection and shear resistance without leakage, when tested under an internal or external water pressure of 50kPa (5 metres head).

Aggressive Environments

The standard Densleeve pipes, polypropylene couplings and elastomeric sealing rings are resistant to attack from substances which are commonly encountered in sewers.

Where more aggressive effluents or environments are present, other types of coupling seals may be required. Alternatively, Naylor has a separate division, Hathernware Thermachem, which manufactures chemical drainage - ceramic pipes for exceptional high temperature or chemically aggressive environments. Contact the Naylor Technical Sales Department for advice.

Specification

The following statement is a suitable clause for inclusion in contract specification.

CE Conformity

Naylor Drainage Vitrified Clay Pipe conforms to European Standard: EN 295-10.

Due to the h igh contact pressure a 5 bar seal reduces the risk of root infestation through the joint al lowing for pipe instal lat ion under mature trees

The seals are designed as a sliding seal that is located in the pipe end rebate. No lubricant is required on either the seal or stainless steel sleeve as lubricant is enclosed within the sliding mantel. As the male spigot is inserted into the female sleeve the seal is compressed creating a positive 5 bar internal and external pressure.

The mantel rolls over the seal during jointing reducing friction to a minimum and acts as a cushion between the spigot and sleeve limiting differential movement under transverse shear loads once the joint is completed. The design optimises joint performance and provides an exceptionally high level of operational reliability.

Seals are available in either EPDM or Nitrile certified to EN681- 1

storm in mind (the kind of weather event that is statistically likely to happen just once in a 30-year period), we have seen a shift in standard practice over the last five years, as the threat of climate change has heightened. This means that most systems are now designed with enough capacity to handle a 100-year storm, with an additional 20% contingency buffer for climate change on top of this.

These new design practices have put space at a premium – and as a result, above-ground SuDS systems, which often take up valuable space (e.g. ponds) are starting to fall out of favour. Meanwhile, the popularity of below-ground tanks for storage and infiltration is soaring – with more and more specifiers opting for modular underground stormwater tanks. The beauty of modular systems is that they can be custom-designed to suit virtually any application – saving space, but also often reducing the need for expensive landscaping work too. At GRAF UK we’ve seen a dramatic increase in the number of tanks that have been designed to fit within any available space on site, just liked the one pictured, which is only possible when using a modular bloc system.

Inspectable systems Systems that are easy to inspect for ongoing maintenance purposes are also understandably in high demand. Traditionally, above-ground stormwater solutions were considered the simplest to maintain, due to them being easy to access. However, with modular tanks now taking centre stage, manufacturers have been working hard to ensure that underground systems can truly compete in this area.

For instance, most modern modular tanks are now designed with inlet shafts and in-built inspection channels that can be placed anywhere on the body of the tank to allow easy access for remote-controlled camera technology. This is then used on a regular basis to check the system for any silt or gravel build-up – ensuring full peace of mind and optimum performance for the lifetime of the tank. The response to this kind of technology has been

With weather events like storm Aileen becoming an increasingly regular occurrence, the effects of climate change are creating unprecedented demand for Sustainable urban Drainage Systems (SuDS). This, in turn, is shaping government policy, with legal requirements and building regulations around drainage becoming ever-more stringent.

Luckily, manufacturers have been quick to introduce new products that make it easier than ever to integrate SuDS into all kinds of projects. While all reputable manufacturers will provide support at every step of the specification process, it makes sense for builders themselves to have a sound overview of the market too, especially as customer demand continues to grow in this fast-paced arena.

Product landscape As a starting point, it pays to understand what’s important on today’s SuDS market, and why. Two of the key technical features that you should be on the lookout for are underground tanks (to maximise available space) and inspectable systems (for straightforward ongoing maintenance).

Underground tanks Effective SuDS design should always ensure systems are set up to handle adverse weather conditions and high volumes of stormwater – both today and throughout the lifetime of the system. While systems have traditionally been designed with a 30-year

phenomenal – so much so that at GRAF UK, we have seen a 650% increase in sales of our EcoBloc inspectable stormwater range in the last three years alone.

Opportunity knocks With demand for modern, efficient and compliant SuDs showing no sign of slowing, there is a clear opportunity for clued-up building professionals. Those who can advise customers on the best products to meet their individual requirements will be in a strong position to benefit for the long-term. Knowing that you can buy such systems from Civils Store, backed up by first-class German engineering from GRAF UK, gives you the competitive advantage you need to meet your customers’ water management requirements.

The monolithic base is delivered to site pre-benched, in any configuration required, allowing for design freedom, which enables safer construction on site, as there is no requirement to work in confined spaces and reduces the open excavation time. This modular solution also eliminates the need for wet trades resulting in faster construction times compared to conventional methods.

A complete manhole can be installed in as little as 30 minutes and using the Perfect Manhole system means there is no need to surround the structure in concrete (unless specifically required) as the sealed system has a 130mm wall thickness. This combined with rubber joints ensures a watertight structure.

This unique arrangement of products is designed and manufactured at our two production facilities in the UK to last a minimum of 120 years. It eliminates the need for ready mixed concrete to form the traditional base, chamber benching and further concrete to surround the manhole, making safe site practice a real winner.

The Perfect Manhole complies with BS EN 1917 and BS 5911 and has been accepted for use by all major UK companies.

drainage mortar base to allow for quick and easy installation over bound or unbound substrates. At a stroke this innovation removes one of the main obstacles to the uptake of porcelain paving in the paving market.

GeoCeramica is available in 10mm tiles which are great for creating the ‘inside – outside’ effect carrying paving through patio doors. The 40mm option is great for patio installations whilst the 60mm range is suitable for installation on driveways making it one of the most versatile paving products currently on the market – and exclusive to Brett.

If you are looking for natural stone for your patio but want a modern twist have a look at our range of Contemporary natural stone including textured, polished and flamed options to give a fantastic range of design opportunities to the developer.

The other great news for 2018 is that we will be introducing Meltone paving into our range to give the great look of textured granite but with the reassurance of an engineered product making for easier installation and consistency. Meltone provides a real difference to our ever popular Chaucer textured patio paving range available in Buff, Natural or Charcoal colourways to suit most applications.

Traditional If you are looking for something of a more Traditional look we can offer a great range of riven sandstone with a colour palette ranging from the reds of Modak through to the greys of Mountain Mist which will enhance almost any property.

However, we also offer a range of wet cast concrete patio packs such as Bronte and Canterbury which provide the great look of natural stone but offer ease of installation as standard. The Bronte range is also available with matching accessories such as full and half circle packs, corner kits and stepping stones to maximise range flexibility.

Contemporary When it comes to Contemporary patio paving the big trend over the past few years has been the growth of porcelain paving; here its durable, hard wearing surface provides great aesthetics in a range of designs from stone effect through to aged timber planks.

In 2017 we took the next step in porcelain paving with the introduction of the revolutionary new GeoCeramica® range. Here a porcelain tile is pre-bonded to a

If you fancy something a bit different have a look at the Rochester Brick design which can be used to create the look of aged clay bricks either as a complete patio – or for integrating within other ranges, such as Chaucer, to create a unique look for your property.

Value When it comes to value we’ve got you covered with our Stamford and Broadway options. Stamford this year introduces Charcoal to the range along with a new Rippled design called Stamford Ultra which is perfect for creating budget patio’s and paths whilst Broadway is perfect for creating utility areas around the garden.

Brett Landscaping and Building products also offer an extensive range of concrete block paving, including permeable paving for use within Sustainable Drainage Schemes, where in 2017 we have introduced Beta Flow in 3 sizes to give a modern new aesthetic to permeable paving.

When it comes to commercial paving the added strength of GeoCeramica makes it suitable for a wide range of applications alongside our Meltone and textured Yorktone offer which can both be integrated with matching kerbs to create a unified design for commercial projects.

Talking about kerbs, all of these great paving products come on top of our classic commercial kerb options Trief and Kassel, which both continue to lead the way in vehicle containment and bus boarding applications respectively. You may have seen our promotional video’s on social media which have proved a huge success – if not have a look today: Kassel: www.youtube.com/watch?v=PtmcBedUt5s Trief: www.youtube.com/watch?v=-jc2ya6u6ko

Within Document H of the Building Regulations the maximum depth of a shallow inspection chamber with a minimum diameter of 190mm should be no more than 600mm deep, however in SfA7 a similar inspection chamber , which is designated as a Type 4; must have an internal minimum dimension of 180mm and installed up to a maximum depth of 2 metres, a Type 4 inspection chamber should also have a minimum radius of 500mm for 100mm pipe and 600mm for a 150mm pipe.

Similarly within the building regulations a 450mm inspection chamber can be installed up to 1.2 metres with a 450mm clear opening or from 1.2 metres to 3 metres deep if a restricted access of 350mm is incorporated. Within SfA7 this installation is defined as a Type 3, and should have a 350mm restricted access over 1 metre deep.

FloPlast’s Specification and Technical Services department based at our modern and state of the art manufacturing plant and office on the outskirts of Sittingbourne, Kent is at your disposal. We are able to offer detailed schedules or quotations, based upon your plans/drawings, assist with design specification, and have a commitment to offer cost saving alternatives wherever practical.

Expanding with demand. The next phase of the expansion of our manufacturing and distribution facility in Kent is nearing its completion, which will add a further 7 acres of storage and distribution warehousing to our capability, with hand over due to be carried out late 2017.

More thoughts and views on Sewers for Adoption 7.

Prior to the induction of SfA7 there was always a reluctance from water authorities towards the use of plastic inspection chambers even at a depth of 1.2 metres.

SfA7 allows the use of Plastic Inspection Chambers in an adoptable drainage situation to a maximum depth of 3 metres, as long as they comply with the requirements of BS EN 13598.

With the obvious advantages of a plastic inspection chamber specification and the benefits when put alongside the concrete alternative, it is easy to see why there is an increased interest to use plastic drainage ranges, the ease of manoeuvrability of plastic and its light weight mean that the on-site requirements to lift heavy sections of concrete are removed reducing the health and safety aspects involved with such operations.

There can also be an element of confusion on-site between the regulatory requirements of the Building Regulations and SfA7 which in some elements contradict each other.

Cement – Sales of cement in plastic continue to increase year on year and with winter coming in, it is time to consider the benefits of our plastic packaging. With temperatures falling it may also be worth considering using Rugby High Strength for use during the cold months. One of the key benefits for Rugby High Strength is its’ early strength gain which helps concrete and mortar during cold snaps. Just remember that you should not be placing concrete in temperatures below 5 degrees. Also be mindful that the ground temperature can be colder than the air temperature for several days after snow or frost.

Through analysis of market trends and the ever-changing requirements of their customer base, research and development programmes are driven to provide new fabrics for an extensive range of applications. In fact, over the last 40 years the company have developed a comprehensive range of woven and needlepunched nonwoven geotextiles and geogrids with enhanced mechanical and hydraulic properties, for a wide variety of construction and civil engineering applications.

Don & Low have drawn on their extensive geotextile knowledge and expertise to create multi-functional geosynthetic materials, which meet some of the industry’s most demanding challenges.

Specifically designed as a temporary barrier to control the movement of soil, Lotrak® Silt Fence can become part of a solution to help maintain land in satisfactory environmental condition as required by EU regulations; thus, helping to avoid potential sanctions and limiting clear up costs – saving your project in time and money.

This geotextile also provides excellent control of soil movement, helps with flood prevention and is easy to install, thanks to the specially designed marker lines to highlight optimum burial depth.

Lotrak® 50 R In the UK we’re often prone to particularly bad and wet weather, resulting in soft ground especially for large scale projects such as unpaved road applications, access roads and coastal protection.

All Lotrak® reinforcing woven geotextile grades, such as Lotrak® 50R, are designed to deliver higher tensile stiffness for soft ground, providing a wide variety of civil engineering projects (car parks, ground stabilisation, construction of roads etc.) with excellent reinforcement.

In fact, Lotrak® 50R can act as the reinforcement, separator and filtration membrane to provide all functions in one geotextile, eliminating the need for multiple products and offering clear cost benefits to the final project. Designed to perform at low strain values (2% and 5%) when small movements take place within the construction, Lotrak® 50R has a high modulus (high strength at low elongation) and can improve the mechanical properties of the soil; as well as other construction materials.

Lotrak® Alarm18 With an increased demand for good building land, reclamation of industrial zones is becoming more common place and identification of contaminated ground is becoming extremely important; as potential hazards are now often buried and contained underground as an alternative to removal.
