Our 50th issue is a bumper one of Jupiterianproportions, as be ts a special celebratory occasion. In addition to the usual book reviews there are articleson a variety of stimulating topics, with plenty to getyour teeth into. It also carries a tribute to formertutor Yvonne Taylor who introduced the Huber
Method in SouthAfrica. Yvonne’ssad and untimelypassing in July wasc o u n t e r b a l a n c e dby the wonderfulcelebratory energyat her memorialservice. So in these
often gloomy globaltimes, it is importantthat we don’t forgetto celebrate whatis good, joyful andpositive. Conjunctionnumber 50 de nitelydeserves this of
us and in the words of the song Celebrate we can “...celebrate good times… everyone around the world, come on!”
This Conjunction is something of amilestone and a sort of of cial birthdayfor our magazine, rolled into one. Its
publication marks 50 issues of Conjunction, which usedto be The N ewsletter and started life as a single sheet of A4, painstakingly typed (possibly on an old fashionedtypewriter in hisof ce in Devon) byRichard Llewellynin the days of APA’sinfancy back in theearly 1980’s.
By the timeI took over therunning of APA in
1991, The N ewsletter had evolved intoan A5 booklet, andas Editor I enjoyedputting each editiontogether… but thenthings changed againand so did its name.It became Conjunction and the Editorship returned toRichard who was itching to enlarge its size to A4 – butof proper magazine proportions this time around and
with far more than one single page! There were morepictures as well as charts. It was initially published inblack and white, and eventually partly in colour. SaraInkster took over as Editor, continuing with the colourtheme, and in addition to this she was instrumentalin creating the rst on-line version, called ConjunctionExtra, a supplement to the printed version. Ourcurrent Editor, Barry Hopewell, has moved thingson yet again, ensuring that each issue of Conjunction is available in full colour on-line to members as wellas offering a taster from each new issue for visitors to
our website.

New Book, Now Available
Advances in printing technology have allowed therecent publication of the rst full-colour Huber book in the English language at a reasonable price – anexciting development considering the great use of colour made in Huber charts, particularly in assessingthe whole chart and the aspect pattern.
Aspect patterns were rst introduced in Bruno andLouise Huber’s A spect Pattern A strology, providing a keyto understanding inner motivation.
In this new book by the author of The Cosmic E ggTimer and The L iving Birth Chart , the individual aspect gures from A spect Pattern A strologyare fully illustratedin colour. The meaning is given for each individualaspect gure, together with an example chart andinterpretation.

Happy Birthday at 85!On 14th August 2010, Richard Llewellyn, indefatigable promoter of the Hubers’astrological psychology in the English-speaking world, and founder of the EnglishHuber School (which became APA), celebrated his 85th birthday. Through this work he
has made a vital contribution to the astrological psychology of the 21st century.

The news of Yvonne’s death from canceron the 8th July was very sad but, for me,not a surprise. We had kept in touchover the months as she bravely foughther illness, and two days before she diedI received a nal e-mail message saying“I’m going downhill now”. In spite of pain she lived life to the full right up tothe end. Not many weeks before the endshe even made the long journey to SouthAfrica to see her latest grandchild!
We had known each other for morethan 25 years from the time when she wasdoing the API Diploma Course, and she invited me toSouth Africa to run some workshops on the Hubers’approach. She worked tirelessly at projects she becomeinvolved with and had already developed a network of people who were enthusiastic about Huber astrology,so I ran workshops in Johannesburg, Durban and CapeTown to very enthusiastic participants.
Yvonne and husband Robert had bought thebungalow on the land next to their own house inJohannesburg and Yvonne, with her good taste and senseof harmony had developed this into a very beautiful andspecial Centre for personal growth. When I’d nished
my three year psychosynthesis trainingI made further visits to South Africato work with groups who were keen toexpand their own sense of self-awarenessand develop their life potential. Yvonne’shard work and organisational abilityensured the success of these workshopsand she became a beacon to which manywere drawn.
When she & Robert moved toEngland to undertake the psychosynthesistraining themselves, Yvonne becamemore involved with the Huber school
and became a Council Member. Around this timeRobert became involved in a Men’s Group originatingin America and Yvonne decided to take this under herbelt and set up a similar group for Women. She startedrunning groups in South Africa and once again broughtlight into the lives of others.
Whatever she turned her attention to she did withtotal dedication and love and she used all her skills andhumanity to help others to lighten their lives. She willbe sadly missed both in South Africa and in this country.

Yvonne with Bruno & Louise Huber Yvonne with Joyce and Richard
I rst met Yvonne in 1988 at a 5 day seminar withBruno and Louise Huber at Froebel College Institute inLondon. Yvonne celebrated her 40th birthday while wewere there. The photo of her with the Hubers was takenthat day. Louise presented her with a bouquet of owers
and we all sang "Happy Birthday".Yvonne and I became friends, and over a period
of 22 years we shared, amongst other things, astrologyand poring over charts, long conversations on diversetopics, shopping expeditions in London, walks togetherin Devon and Cheshire, "Face to Face" at the BeaconCentre and Buckland Hall, API Council meetings andastrological conferences. Yvonne was a Diploma Coursetutor for many years, and the workshops she organisedin Johannesburg in both astrological psychology andpsychosynthesis inspired many South African students
to study with API.I remember how energised she was when she rstattended a "Woman Within" workshop. Talking with herabout it on the phone, I told her she sounded different. She wanted to know in what way, and I said her voice
somehow sounded stronger. She was delighted I'dpicked this up over the phone as she'd been workingon strengthening it during the workshop. She went onto train as a facilitator for "Woman Within" and workedwith women in the UK, US and South Africa. She really
had found her voice! At one point, Yvonne told me she wanted to learn
beading and showed me books on this subject with packsof beads she'd bought. At the start of her memorialservice, we were invited to take two beads from smallbags which were passed around. At the end, we wereasked to hold our beads and infuse them with joyfulmemories before returning one on our way out, keepingthe other as a personal token. The returned beads werefor a necklace of remembrance, each one symbolisinghow all present were linked by, and with, Yvonne.
Dear friend, your amazing blue eyes sparkled with funwhen we shared love, laughter, learning, and often badly-behaved giggles in lectures at astrological conferences.
I’ll sign off now as you always did, with "Lotsaluv".Joyce Hopewell

Academic Conferences, Summer 2010
The academic world has evolved since I graduated in1972, disillusioned by the apparent incompatibility of an overlapping quest for intellectual achievement and aneven more urgent search for Self. These drives are in factless diverse than they seem and often complement eachother, for you can always deduce something about the
character of a person from the subjects he or she choosesto study, whether or not those choices were made freelyor under duress. Nowadays there is greater awareness of the subtle energies that contribute to health, wellbeingand wholeness, and many more interdisciplinary studieshave developed to explore the beliefs and emotionsthat contribute to our culture and understanding in thiscomplex world.
In Introduction II to Modern E soteric Spirituality, JacobNeedleman wrote:
“We could say that the scholar attends to the “horizontal”
dimension of religion, its forms and manifestations in culture and history; the seeker attends to the “vertical” dimension, understood as the movement within oneself toward inner freedom or, to useother language, toward G od.
The scholar look s outward; the seeker look s inward (or “upward”)... T he possibility of the development within thehuman person of a presence that contains and reconciles boththese movements is, it seems to me, a central de ning characteristicrecogniz ed and even emphasized by teachings that may authenticallybe termed esoteric.”
For me, the decision to study for an MA in Western
Esotericism by distance learning at the University of Exeter is a natural way forward to take my teaching andpractice of astrology into a broader cultural context. My Cancerian Sun is delighted to become a studentonce more while my Capricornian Ascendant seeks thegreater authority that comes with more comprehensiveknowledge.
This summer I attended three conferences thatenhanced this context, in London, Bristol and Bath.
On 26 June a one-day symposium on “Emotionsand Health, 1200-1700” was organised by the Centre
for the History of Emotions at Queen Mary, Universityof London. Scholars from universities in Cambridge,London, Pennsylvania and Manchester lectured on thepassions of the soul, the pathologies of sleep, the impactof fear, music and subtle spirits.
As stated by Peter Forshaw in Bristol a fortnight later, the four pillars of traditional medicine are philosophy, astrology, alchemy and virtues.
Many more conferences of a similar nature are beingheld across Europe. To nd out more, go to www.qmul.ac.uk/ emotions and join an email circulation list.
Nobody predicted that the Bristol conference,“Imagined Astrology: Painted Schemes and Threadsfor the Soul” scheduled for April, would be postponedto 10/ 11 July because of volcanic ash, but it was worthwaiting for. There were several good talks, most illustrated
with pictorial images of signs and planets. DarrelynGunzberg outlined her monumental work of unravellingthe imagery and symbolism of Giotto’s astrologicalfrescoes at the Town Hall in Padova. Liz Greene drewsome astonishing parallels between Victorian magicalastrology and the development of Freudian and Jungianpsychologies.
At Bristol and Bath there were talks onarchaeoastronomy or astroarchaeology. RonaldHutton drew attention to the lack of dialogue betweenarchaeologists in universities digging holes in the groundand amateur enthusiasts measuring the angles betweenancient observatories and the starry skies, whereasNicholas Goodrick-Clarke showed us just how manysacred sites there are.
Although the Sophia Centre is now located at theUniversity of Wales, it continues to hold its annualconference in Bath. “Astrologies”, 24/ 25 July, focussedon the cultural context and intellectual lineage of westernastrology, attracting good speakers from overseas aswell as its own team and other UK academics. It waswell attended by astrologers and offered a few studentbursaries, enabling APA student Karen Rowlinson toattend.
An eclectic range of presentations covered historical gures, biblical imagery and contemporary culture. Thetalks on astro-chemistry, how astrologers read charts, andthe horoscope itself were more hands on. Liz Greeneis initiating work on signs, signatures and symbols thatwill no doubt feature in next year’s conference, “Sky and
Symbol”, set for 11/ 12 June 2011. For more informationemail [email protected] or google ‘sophiaconferences’.
