Woodland Trust re-launches its MOREwoods programmeThe Woodland Trust has re-launched its MOREwoods woodland creation programme encouraging landowners to plant moretrees on their own land with the charitys support and, in some cases, funding.Specialist woodland creation advisers are in place to offer site visits and advice based on four decades of Trust plantingexpertise, with a specific information area on its web site.Last winter MOREwoods created 210 hectares of new native woodland across 160 sites, with planting motivated by a range ofuses from riverbank shelter for young fish to education and legacy for children, shelter belts for crops and game bird cover. Many MOREwoods applicants are motivated by the creation of new habitat for wildlife, especially support pollinating insects, and an increasing number of people are planting to create their own sustainable and accessible supplies of wood fuel. The Trust has three main areas of focus for 2010 - planting for wood fuel, wildlife and trees on farms as part of productiveagriculture. It will be exhibiting at the CLA Game Fair in Warwickshire with tree planting specialists on hand each day. With ambitious aims to increase native tree cover, the woodland charity is encouraging other landowners to plant rather thanrely on acquiring and planting up its own land. Powerful arguments back its campaign, not least an increasing array ofwoodland creation grants.Certainly few single commodities deliver a range of landowner benefits that can include carbon capture, cutting greenhousegas, providing shelter for stock and buildings and crops, helping cleanse and control water flows, reducing nutrient runoff anddelivering shade for livestock.Applications are invited for a minimum of one hectare, although this can be split up into separate pockets of planting.www.woodlandtrust.org.uk/planting [email protected]

Over 80% of farmers and land managers are aware of the Campaign for the Farmed Environment (CFE) andmost will take voluntary action to ensure the Campaign is a success, according to a recent survey published byDefra.During February and March this year, over 3000 farmers across the country responded to a Defra survey on CFE. But whilstawareness levels are high, good intentions to manage land voluntarily need to be converted into action before it is too late toavoid the regulatory approach.Since the survey was issued, county-based postcard campaigns and local Campaign events have highlighted how farmersand land managers can play their part. Those visiting Cereals this year on 9-10 June should take advantage of the advice andsupport on offer throughout the CFE trail. The trail has been developed by the Campaign partnership to help farmers gain agreater understanding and provide them with advice about the voluntary management measures which can be put in place onfarm. The CFE stand (number 717) will provide an opportunity to meet the local coordinators and farmer chairs, and CFE

partners on the trail will help answer those burning questions about the Campaign. CLA 3/6/10Find out more about the Campaign by reading CJS Focus on Farming and the Environment.Available online at: http://bit.ly/CJSFocus
