Each Day Is A Gift

We receive gifts for numerous rea-sons. Sometimes they are for specific times of year, such as Christmas or birthdays. Other times, they are “just because” gifts as a show of ap-preciation or a way to brighten some-one’s day. As the principal of Christ the King Catholic School, each day is truly a gift. My ‘presents’ are the children entrusted into my care and the faith-filled staff that works with me to help each child grow in faith and knowledge. I pray that as we celebrate the gifts of Jesus Christ and our salvation, that each of us will live our lives to the fullest, appreciating each day and using our words and deeds to glorify God. I thank all of you for making Christ the King Catholic School more than just a pos-sibility, but a reality for our children and their families. OUR PARISH MISSION We are Christ the King Parish, a richly diverse Christian Community in Northwest Detroit. We are on a journey of Discipleship with Jesus, seeking conversion, reconcilia-tion and renewal. We reach out in welcome to all the people within our neighborhood, proclaiming the good News of Christ the King, building community, celebrating together, serving one another’s needs and the needs of all our neighbors.

“In the tender compassion of our God the dawn from on high shall break upon us, to shine on those who dwell in darkness and the shadow of death, and to guide our feet into the way of peace.” (Lk 1:78-79) As the angels proclaim the birth of Christ, we are not afraid. The Wisdom of Pope Francis

What is the law of the People of God? It is the law of love, love for God and love for neighbor ac-cording to the new com-mandment that the Lord left to us (cf. Jn

13:34). It is a love, however, that is not sterile sentimentality or some-thing vague, but the acknowledg-ment of God as the one Lord of life and, at the same time, the accep-tance of the other as my true brother, overcoming division, ri-valry, misunderstanding, selfish-ness; these two things go together. Oh how much more of the journey do we have to make in order to ac-tually live the new law — the law of the Holy Spirit who acts in us, the law of charity, of love! Looking in newspapers or on television we see so many wars between Christians: how does this happen? Within the People of God, there are so many wars! How many wars of envy, of jealousy, are waged in neighbor-hoods, in the workplace! Even within the family itself, there are so many internal wars! We must ask the Lord to make us correctly un-derstand this law of love. How beautiful it is to love one another as true brothers and sisters. How beautiful! Let’s do something today.

Incarnation II One “High-Crime” neighborhood in Baltimore has had only one murder in more than a year: Parks Heights. What is their secret? They have citizen patrols made up of ex con-victs and drug dealers who grew up there – the “Safe Street” program. The workers are trained in conflict resolution, and they walk the streets hanging around with people who tend to get into trouble. They are called “violence interrupters.” One woman comments, “Who better to know the streets than the people who grew up in them?” The guy who she was talking with chuckled: “She could have sent me to prison several times!” Jesus is a violence interrupter.

From Our Fourth Grade It is easy for me to identify my favorite part of being in Detroit this year: my students. Teaching 4th grade at Christ the King Catholic School has been amazing. I have quickly learned that teach-ing makes a person want to laugh, cry, throw up, smile, and scream in frustration all at the same time. I see God in each of my students, and God is also using this experience to teach me not to “put him in a box.” If you think you know what God is planning, there’s a good chance you’re in for a brutal surprise. I am finding out that it is often not in re-sults or successes that we find God, but rather, it is in the mess of life (or in the mess of the classroom) that He presents Himself to us. There are fifteen students in my class (not including our class pet rock). We have three classroom rules: (1) Be safe, (2) Be respectful, (3) Be responsible. We pray at the beginning and end of each day. We play games every day. There are high levels of expectations for behavior and learning. Everyone leaves class smiling every day (almost). My students know that they need to work hard, but I also make it clear that they should also enjoy coming to school. My students know that I truly care about each of them, and I believe that each of them becomes a better per-son by being in my class. My classroom setup is a bit unconventional. Each student has a desk somewhere around the outside of the room that they use for inde-pendent work, leaving the entire middle of the room open and clear. When I teach a lesson up at the board, each student brings their chair up to the front of the room. This style of organization lends itself to lots of controlled movement and physical activity throughout the day, helping the students stay focused, engaged, and having a good time. Many of my teaching “experiments” have not worked, but I believe that this style oper-ates very well. In math, we are currently learning how to do long division; we are focusing on how division is related to multiplication, of which the stu-dents already have a good grasp. In language arts, we are practicing writ-ing complete paragraphs, allowing us to delve more deeply into express-ing and communicating learning in our other subjects, such as explaining how God used Moses to free the Israelites from the Egyptians (Religion) or debating how the Native Americans and the European settlers could have or should have worked out their differences (Social Studies). My goal in all this is not necessarily to teach my students what to think, but rather how to think. Overall, the 4th-grade class at Christ the King is rolling along very nicely. We are by no means perfect, but I am grateful that we are able to glorify God and grow closer to Him through education.

Kyle VanOverbeke, 4th-grade Teacher Alcove of Angels

Our Alcove of Angels is up and ready to re-ceive your angel in memory of a loved one. We will leave them up through the holiday season as a reminder to pray for

those who have gone on their heav-enly home. You are welcome to put the name of the person you are re-membering on the angel, and hang it on one of the available strings. This makes a lovely addition to our festive decorations!
