It would be best if all our families wouldwork hard to be holy.

The hard work starts with boththe father and the mother, down tothe children and to some instances, toextended families like the grandparentsand grandchildren. And thanks God, wehave the Holy Family as our model to alife of holiness!

What comes rst in our mind whenwe try to emulate the Holy Family is thatit is a praying Community.

Like Jesus, Mary and Joseph, letus strive to communicate with Godconstantly. We pray when we wake upeach morning and before we sleep atnight, before and after meals, before wesleep. We teach our children to go to Masson Sunday and Holy Days of Obligationswithout exemption.

A family should have a Holy Biblewhich should be often opened, read andmeditated by all members. A neglectedaspect in the lives of many CatholicChristians is the importance of readingand living the message of the Bible. Manyof our brothers and sisters in the Catholic

faith still do not have a copy of the HolyBook. And for those who have the book, most of the time do not open and meditateon it. For a family to aspire for holiness, the Holy Bible should be the centerpieceand cornerstone of their faith.

In our prayers, we include ourfamilies, relatives, friends, our priests, theold, the sick, victims of calamities, peacefor our needs and for those who make ourlives miserable. The family should endtheir prayers with words of thanks andpraise. “Every day I will thank you; I will praise you forever and ever.” (Psalm 145, 2)

Faith teaches us rst and foremostto believe and to love God who guides, teaches and directs us and showers uswith His graces in order for all of us toreach our nal destination in heaven.Faith is an important virtue to be nurturedand shared by parents to their childrenespecially while they are growing up. As we celebrate the Feast of the HolyFamily of Jesus, Mary and Joseph, may weemulate the example set before us so thatcentered on Jesus, in His Word and in the

Communication, An Important Value in the Family during meal times and family hour. This isa good habit to develop in the family forprayer keeps Jesus at the center of familylife and communication with one anotherhelps avoid conict and maintains goodrelations.

Effective family communicationprovides each member with a solidsupport system. It is a venue to ask foradvice or suggestions and it helps oneto acquire life’s skills such as speaking,conict-resolution, problem solving, active

listening, teamwork and leadership. With the advent of technology, communication is easier and it can bridgefamily members who are separatedby distance because of work. May weutilize these means of communication tostrengthen our family ties and to keep usone in the spirit of love and fraternity.

However, I realize that no matterhow technologically advanced we are, this does not guarantee effective familycommunication. What we need is theattitude of openness to share our ownthoughts and feelings; of humility to allowothers to guide and help us; of selessnessto show our concern with people aroundus. And of constancy in communicatingwith God and with one another so thatharmony and peace will reign among us!

How To Stand Strong as a Family? Tips for

 Growth

Congratulations… my dear sons anddaughters!”These are the words I would

like to say to the members of the JaroParish Youth Ministry because of theircommendable performance during theChristmas Presentation last December 24evening. They did a great job eventhoughI seldom supervise them.

For aside from being a YouthDirector, I was also entrusted with otherresponsibilities here in the parish. It is agreat challenge for me on how to managemyself and my time so that I can fulllmy various duties and responsibilities.

Unlike before when I was residentpriest here, I was able to give my quality

1. Put the Marriage FirstIt is the parent’s job to set an exampleof real love. Many families think thatthekids should come rst but that isunfair because parents are the ones whoneed to teach love.

2. Make Dinner a Priority.Family dinners are essential and it’sa way families can connect. The workday and school day can be very hecticand a lot of things can happen; whichconsumes us mentally and emotionally.

3. Build and Honor Rituals.Families need rituals because they’repositive reinforcements and givemembers something to look forward to.It also helps build strong bonds. Thiscan be family movie night with pizzaon Fridays or most especially going tochurch every Sunday.

4. Enjoy Each Other .The essence of a family is that they uplifteach other and it comes down to howthey treat each other. Swap stories witheach other and be part of their lives. Eachfamily member should feel like they areimportant.

time to the young people. It was not so muchon presiding meetings and planning variousactivities for the good of the young people in the

parish but even for “wasting time” with them, getting to know them personally and assuringthem that they didn’t just have a priest to guideand teach them but they have a brother who canbe one with them in their journey through life.

But I know and I believe that the youngpeople understand me. I am happy that they donot depend so much on me now except whenthere are big decisions to make. I can sense thatthey are empowered by their love for Jesus and bythe power of the Holy Spirit. They do their dutiesand obligations not so much to please me butbecause of their concern for the welfare of othersand for the greater glory of God.

bayaran naton. (Don’t worry, we will pay.)”Isn’t it a great irony that sometimes family

members are not that open and transparent to oneanother? Some are more comfortable and candidto share their thoughts and feelings to their friendsrather than to their own parents or siblings. Goodfor those who have their own parents, spouse orsiblings as their best friends but there are those who, because of some factors like traumatic experiencesare not that open in their communication with oneanother. They select what to share with their lovedones as if hiding something for fear of not beingloved unconditionally.

As we celebrate the Feast of the Holy Family,we are reminded to value communication in ourown families – communication with God in prayerand communication with one another especially

Words of Affirmation and Apology

I would like to commend thleadership of the Youth Council - thofcers, the barangay youth coordinatoand ministry coordinators. I know thif it were not for your cooperationcreativity and faith, the activities whave facilitated especially during thmonth like the Viva Parol and thChristmas Presentation would not havbeen successful and meaningful.

I would also like to ask for apologfor my shortcomings especially durinthose times that I was not able to meeyour expectations, for not being presenduring your practices and for beindifcult to deal with especially when yowere asking for money for your snackand meals. I know that some of you mabeen disappointed or frustrated. Pleasdo forgive me. I will do better next tim(just remind me!).

My gratitude also goes to Sir JosepWilliam Albaña who patiently anfaithfully accompanied our young peoplwith or without theatrical presentationhere in the Parish. His deep trust in thgoodness of the youth inspires me to sethe limitless potentials of these younpeople. Thanks a lot, Sir Joseph! MaGod give you good health so that you cacontinue to serve God and His people.

Again, my dear sons and daughterin JPYM… Congratulations! MerrChristmas and Advance Happy NewYear!

5. CommunicateHaving an environment where kids feelcomfortable in communicating. Instead allmembers should discuss issues openly and giveconstructive feedback.

6. Show Affection and WarmthDon’t miss an opportunity to be affectionate withyour spouse and kids. Unexpressed love is equalto no love at all. This is a part of a family’s core

launched a new initiative to give voiceto the laity.

With the Church’s declaration of2014 as Year of the Laity, the CBCP haslaunched a website dedicated to the laypeople called choosetobebrave.org.

In his letter introducing the newsite, CBCP president and Lingayen-Dagupan Archbishop Socrates Villegassaid the new step was taken “to reachout to more of the laity in the CatholicChurch.”

Villegas said the 2014’s challenge

He said one can become a saint and a hero bybeing brave, and this is possible for everyone todo everyday and everywhere.

“Cowards cannot be saints,” Villegas said, adding “’Do not be afraid’ is the favouritecommand of God.”

He said “cold people are dull and dry” but“heroes inspire and ignite” and “everybodyloves brave people” because “brave people areadmirable.”

“Here is the website to inspire you to bebrave and to share your stories of bravery. Hereyou can light little candles of bravery and setthe world are! Make this world a better place,”

Pope’s Urbi et Orbi Blessing: A Call for Peace

December 25, 2013. Thousandsof people ocked to St. Peter’sSquare to see Pope Francis’ rst

Urbi et Orbi Christmas blessing. Asexpected, the Pope put his personal stylein the message.

“God is peace: let us ask him to helpus to be peacemakers each day, in our life,in our families, in our cities and nations, inthe whole world. Let us allow ourselvesto be moved by God’s goodness.”

It’s a time of joy, but the Popealso understands that many peopleface stark challenges during this timeof year. In particular, Christians wholive in the Holy Land, where Jesus wasborn.

“Looking at the Child in the manger, our thoughts turn to those children who arethe most vulnerable victims of wars, but wethink too of the elderly, to battered women,to the sick… Wars shatter and hurt somany lives! Bless the land where you chose

As you have observed,we have beenpublishing in the

evious issues of Candleght the text of Pope Francis’ostolic Exhortation, angelii Gaudium (The Joyhe Gospel). I am happy to

are with you the synthesishis document which I gotm news.va. If ever yount to read the full text of Apostolic Exhortation,

u may download it in PDFmat, click on or copy thelowing link:  http://www.can.va/phome_en.htm. (Fr. Nat)

“The joy of the Gospels the hearts and lives of

who encounter Jesus”;us begins the Apostolichortation “Evangeliiudium”, by which Pope

ancis develops the themethe proclamation of thespel in the contemporaryrld, drawn from, among

her sources, the contribution of the workthe Synod held in the Vatican from 728 October 2012 on the theme “Thew evangelization for the transmissionthe faith”. The text, which the Holyher consigned to a group of thirty-faithful following the closing Mass of Year of Faith last Sunday is the rst

cial document of his ponticate, since Encyclical “Lumen dei” was writtencollaboration with his predecessor,

nedict XVI. “I wish to encourage theristian faithful to embark upon a new

apter of evangelization marked by this, while pointing out new paths for theurch’s journey in years to come”, he

ntinues. It is a heartfelt appeal to allptized persons to bring Christ’s loveothers, “permanently in a state ofssion”, conquering “the great dangeroday’s world”, that of an individualistesolation and anguish”.

The Pope invites the reader tocover the original freshness of thespel”, nding “new avenues” andew paths of creativity”, withoutclosing Jesus in our “dull categories”.ere is a need for a “pastoral andssionary conversion, which cannotve things as they presently are” and a

newal” of ecclesiastical structures toable them to become “more mission-ented”. The Pontiff also considersconversion of the papacy”, to helpke this ministry “more faithful to meaning which Jesus Christ wishedgive it and to the present needs ofangelization”. The hope that theiscopal Conferences might contributethe concrete realization of the collegialrit”, he states, “has not been fullylized”. A “sound decentralization”

necessary. In this renewal, the Churchould not be afraid to re-examineertain customs not directly connectedthe heart of the Gospel, even some of

hich have deep historical roots”.A sign of God’s openness is “that our

urch doors should always be open” so

that those who seek God “will not nd a closeddoor”; “nor should the doors of the sacramentsbe closed for simply any reason”. The Eucharist“is not a prize for the perfect but a powerfulmedicine and nourishment for the weak”. Theseconvictions have pastoral consequences thatwe are called to consider with prudence andboldness”. He repeats that he prefers “a Churchwhich is bruised, hurting and dirty because it hasbeen out on the streets, rather than a Church …concerned with being at the centre and then endsby being caught up in a web of obsessions andprocedures. If something should rightly disturbus … it is the fact that many of our brothers andsisters are living without … the friendship of Jesus Christ”.

The Pope indicates the “temptations whichaffect pastoral workers”: “individualism, a crisis

of identity and a cooling of fervour”. The greatestthreat of all is “the grey pragmatism of the dailylife of the Church, in which all appears to proceednormally, which in reality faith is wearing down”.He warns against “defeatism”, urging Christiansto be signs of hope, bringing about a “revolutionof tenderness”. It is necessary to seek refuge fromthe “spirituality of well-being … detached fromresponsibility for our brothers and sisters” and tovanquish the “spiritual worldliness” that consistsof “seeking not the Lord’s glory but human gloryand well-being”. The Pope speaks of the manywho “feel superior to others” because “theyremain intransigently faithful to a particularCatholic style from the past” whereby “insteadof evangelizing, one analyses and classiesothers” and those who have “an ostentatiouspreoccupation for the liturgy, for doctrine and forthe Church’s prestige, but without any concern

that the Gospel have a realimpact” on the needs of thepeople. This is “a tremendouscorruption disguised as agood … God save us froma worldly Church withsupercial spiritual andpastoral trappings!”.

He appeals to ecclesialcommunities not to fall preyto envy and jealousy: “Howmany wars take place withinthe people of God and inour different communities!”.“Whom are we going toevangelize if this is the waywe act?”. He highlights theneed to promote the growthof the responsibility of thelaity, often kept “away fromdecision-making” by “anexcessive clericalism”. Headds that there is a need for

“still broader opportunitiesfor a more incisive femalepresence in the Church”, inparticular “in the various

settings where important decisions aremade”. “Demands that the legitimaterights of women be respected … cannotbe lightly evaded”. The young should“exercise greater leadership”. Withregard to the scarcity of vocationsin many places, he emphasizes that“seminaries cannot accept candidates onthe basis of any motivation whatsoever”.

With regard to the theme ofinculturation, he remarks that“Christianity does not have simplyone cultural expression” and that theface of the Church is “varied”. “Wecannot demand that peoples of everycontinent, in expressing their Christianfaith, imitate modes of expressionwhich European nations developed at aparticular moment of their history”. ThePope reiterates that “underlying popularpiety … is an active evangelizingpower” and encourages the research oftheologians, reminding them howeverthat “the Church and theology exist toevangelize” and urging them not to be“content with a desk-bound theology”.

He focuses “somewhat meticulously,on the homily”, since “many concernshave been expressed about this importantministry and we cannot simply ignore

them”. The homily “should be briefand avoid taking on the semblanceof a speech or a lecture”, should be a“heart-to-heart communication” andavoid “purely moralistic or doctrinaire”preaching. He highlights the importanceof preparation: “a preacher who does notprepare is not ‘spiritual’; he is dishonestand irresponsible”. Preaching shouldalways be positive in order always to“offer hope” and “does not leave ustrapped in negativity”. The approachto the proclamation of the Gospelshould have positive characteristics:“approachability, readiness for dialogue, patience, a warmth and welcome whichis non-judgemental”.

It was a cold December night.Everyone was trying to keep warminside the home. The sky was dark.

There was silence as everybody tried tomake themselves comfortable.

Suddenly, a brilliant light coveredthe earth. A big comet had suddenlyappeared in the heavens and its sparklingrays rested upon an old abandoned cavein Bethlehem. What happened there? Some shepherds who were watchingtheir ock by night decided to go tothe cave to see what it was. They weresurprised but happy to see a couplekeeping watch over a baby wrapped inswaddling clothes on a bed of hay in amanager. All three had halos, shinningwith a brilliance that lighted up the cave.

Something beautiful had happened. As they approached the manger withclasped hands, they were lled with

reverence and joy. They knelt before themanager as they looked at the child whowas smiling at them. Their hearts melted. They could not fully explain their feelingof holiness. Their hearts were light.Everything seemed to be wonderfullypeaceful. They asked themselves: Whois this infant who seems to bring peaceand love? Just then, they heard angelssinging in the sky. The world seemed tobe alive with something wonderful; andis out deep into the hearts of men.

God loves us so much that He gaveHis only Son to live among us andmake us His real children. Brothersand sisters of Jesus; what other proof isneeded to show God’s love and concernfor us even if we sometimes contradict

His commandments? God made us understandHis love and generosity for us by giving us Hisonly Son. God made us understand the messageof humility by letting Jesus take His humanform in a dirty stable with some shepherds asHis rst visitors. God gave us His message ofomnipotence by lighting up the sky with onlyone comet its tails reaching out to the ends of theearth. God gave the message to the brotherhoodof men when He made the shepherds and later onthe Three Wise Men from the East, or the Magi,(the Three Kings), go to Jesus to homage to Him.

We must never forget the valuable messageof equality. God gave the Ten Commandments toMoses to be observed and followed by all men, regardless of his stature in life.

There is one message which we must alwayskeep and remember! Love. Neighbors or strangersmust be extended help when needed. Love mustbe practiced in homes – schools – ofces – incommunities – and especially in churches.

Last Sunday, I happened to sit near a smallboy named Einmar, who was reverent andattentive. I was touched by his behavior. Whileother kids were restless, he was very silent. Afterthe Mass, I asked for his name, and he gaveit – Einmar. The message of the Mass is for thefaithful to follow. If all of us could absorb thehomily in every Mass, we are sure to ll morestable and trusting.

God never leaves us alone. He sends us trialsto make us more religious. He is always there ifwe want to talk to Him. Let us all develop thecourage to ask the Holy Spirit for guidance andwisdom and maintain an incorrigible faith thatcan weather all the storms of life.

Merry Christmas!! Keep us in your hearts aswe keep yours in ours! Jesus – Jesus, thank you –keep us safe from the pitfalls of life.
