The tectonic studio was a semester long, mul -faceted project to design an Architecture School for an all art ins tu on. The students examined architecture school, studio culture, and educa on as factors in the design of the building.

Kansas City Art Ins tute is a small and private ins tu on located in Kansas City, Missouri. Situated between two of the city’s most premier art museums, Kemper Contemporary Art Museum, and Nelson Adkins, the school yearned for a connec on to the community.

This design solu on facilitates pedestrian circula on into campus, while maintaining an iden ty for student crea ve space. The two volumes, each with unique characteris cs, link the exis ng campus culture with the proposed Architecture School.

Students were tasked to produce a set of construc on documents along with a physical model.

Project Loca on _ Lincoln, NebraskaCourse _ ARCH 310 Professor _ David KarleComple on _ Spring 2014Partner(s) _ Kevin Bukowski

The project task was to design an ‘Urban Seed Vault’ providing scien fi c research and community involvement.

Understanding the surrounding urban site in downtown Lincoln, Nebraska was of utmost importance in a aining successful design. The correla on between the viaduct and sun pa erns had strong infl uence in the direc on of the work.

The Urban Seed Vault had a set of programma c requirements that allowed for a complex system of aperture and skin.

All glass facade system was used in storefront se ng to draw in visitors and allow for valuable light to pass under the viaduct into the recep on area.

Certain areas of the vault required delicate seed storage kept opaque to shelter from harsh sunlight. The six op ons of aperture op mize light condi ons within the building.

The end result of this seven week project was a fully developed proposal that included a physical model with construc on drawings.

This facade considered to be entirelyprivate and completely closed from the exterior. This facade creates acontrolled enviornment for the user.

For a mostly private environment, this facade system allows diffused light into the space while maintaining aprivate user experience.

This facade occurs often throughoutthe building. Floor to ceiling glass stands behind the rain screen for neutral passive space.

As a rare occurance in the building a private patio takes place in the lab setting. Workers will have the opportunity to step outside in private behind the rain screen.

As an entirely public exterior, floor to ceiling glazing will be used with this facade. Maximum light and

The UNL Travel Abroad Exper ience provided for three weeks on the Is land of Santa Cruz of the Galapagos Is lands in Ecuador.

Three teams of students worked to des ign publ ic parks . The goal for the t ime spent abroad was to ga in a perspect ive of being a ‘wor ld c i t i zen’ and ga in des ign empathy.

Students worked c losely with reg istered landscape architects , David Witte and K im Wi lson, in respect ive s i te locat ions across the is land.

In Arrayanes Park , the students used the ex ist ing concrete to bui ld an addit ional structure that would house a rock wal l , renta l unit , and s i tt ing area. The key to park des ign in Ecuador was to use what was g iven and make informed decis ions that would fac i l i tate insta l lat ion of the team’s des ign eas iest for the people of Santa Cruz.

This rea l wor ld project required a knowledge of cost effect iveness and constra ined des ign dec is ions.

This sect ion of the park provided a canopy, adjacent bui ld ing , and large c iv ic space.
