Surge Radio

Between 2012 and 2014 I’ve been Head of Marketing for Surge Radio, Southampton University’s student radio station. My main task has been rebranding Surge into a modern, attractive station which offers students what they want and need. This has seen me implement a new logo, new website, new playout software, and numerous social media and print campaigns.

Surge Radio is now recognised as a modern and approachable brand due to my consistent style and modern promotional pieces. Sometimes it’s hard working with a committee who often have different ideas to me, and the work can be very demanding and often sprung upon me at obscure times, but it’s all part of the fun and I love it more and more every day. It’s seen me design posters for events I didn’t know existed, do my first ever software UI design, and create a website from the ground-up with my front-end developer.

It’s been a rewarding experience and I hope the next committee has a solid foundation from which to continue Surge’s success.

BRANDING

The first step of the rebrand was creating a new logo and social media icon for Surge.

The logos were implemented both online and in print, helping us create engaging competitons and seeing us

print over 5,000 beer mats.

2014 saw the first ever Surge Awards, with categories judged by industry professionals. It was my task to publicise this and help it get the audience and participation it deserved. I also

designed glass awards and certificates.

The SUSU elections 2014 was one of the biggest events Surge has ever participated in. It was an exciting time for us, and the marketing campaign pictured to the right was designed to express the feeling of the unknown, and above all, excitement.

PRINT & SOCIAL MEDIA

the edge magazine

As the Edge’s new Head of Design I undertook a huge re-style of the magazine. This included a new logo, icon, and magazine design. The old magazine was tired and old-fashioned, and I was asked to create a consistent, modern look for the future.

We’ve since had tons of great feedback, handing out over 3,000 copies in Freshers’ Week at Southampton University alone. Each month we print and distribute 1,500 copies across campus and Southampton city center.

ILLUSTRATION

As well as doing Graphic Design, I am an Illustrator. I feel these two skills link very closely, with many companies hiring freelance illustrators to create fun and

p e r s o n a b l e images for thier brand. Illustration and character design are close to my heart and I feel they aid me in creating unique graphic images.
