Ruby Jackson, Brooklyn Bauer and Katelyn Noard will be crowned at 7 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 18, the first day of the four-day fair.

One of them will be a queen and the other two princesses.

This will be just the second time since the mid-1990s that the corona-tion is held during the fair at the fair-grounds. In the past, the coronation has been conducted before the fair begins.

>>> Ruby is sponsored by Hermann Brothers Logging and Construction.

She plans to attend Peninsula Col-lege and receive her AA degree.

She would then like to attend

fashion school and become a wedding designer for plus-size women.

>>> Brooklyn is sponsored by Forks Outfitters.

The 17-year-old graduated in June earning her high school diploma from Forks High School and also receiving her honors associate’s degree from Peninsula College.

Brooklyn is a 4-H member in rascals. She will be attending Southern Ore-

gon University in the fall and plans on going into law enforcement.

>>> Katelyn is sponsored by Rygaard Logging Inc.

Her parents are Richard and Wendy Noard.

Katelyn is involved in the swim and dive teams, gymnastics, track and field and NJROTC.

She plans are to attend a four-year university upon graduation and receive a master’s degree in second-ary education.

For several months, the three candi-dates attended parades and other pag-eants, contributed to community service through volunteering at food banks and participated in Relay for Life.

The contest for the coveted queen’s crown includes judging by the Clal-lam County Fair Board and a Spring Tea where the public met with the candidates.

At the coronation on Thursday, each will give a 5-minute speech and answer questions.

All points during that judged

event and those leading up to it will be combined to determined who is crowned queen. The queen will receive a $500 scholarship and the princesses $400 scholarships.

All three will have duties at the 2011 fair after they are crowned

The zone is tailored for those 12 and younger — particularly those who aren’t tall enough yet to enjoy the carnival rides.

It is located in the Northwest area of the fairgrounds (see map on Page 6).You’ll find pony rides, tractor pulls and a 25-foot rock climbing wall and bungee

jump provided by Las Vegas-based Altitude Adjustment.Kids and adults alike can ascend the rock wall for $4 per climb, or two for $6. If you fancy yourself a serious climber, try out Altitude Adjustment’s “hard

route” for $10 a climb.Reach the top and you’ll get a $50 prize! Three or four people usually make it to the top and collect the $50 prize, says

Brent Thompson, owner of Altitude Adjustment. In addition to the rock climbing, two bungee jumping harnesses will sweep

thrill seekers 30 feet into the air. “It’s like a big trampoline with harnesses,” Brent says.Bungee jumpers must weight at least 10 pounds, but no more than 200.Controls allow Brent to bounce jumpers as high or low as they want —

younger kids may like to start out slow and get progressively more brave with the bouncing. Each jump is $6.

Talent Show:Come out to the fairgrounds on Sunday, Aug. 21 for the fair’s first variety and talent show. It will be held from 2 p.m. to 5 p.m. on the Wilder Auto Community Stage. You never know what you’ll see — music, dancing, magic, juggling. Performers will be judged and prizes awarded. Come cheer for your favorite and see if “Clallam County’s Got Talent!”

the kid zone ensures that every age group has something extra fun to do at the fair.

To enjoy unlimited carnival rides at a discount price, you have to purchase a special ticket before the fair opens.

These tickets, which cost $25, won’t be sold at the fair. They must be purchased in advance.

Pick yours up at one of the following businesses before Aug. 18:In Port Angeles — Both Higher Grounds, Swain’s General Store, Wilder Auto Center and the Clallam County Fair OfficeIn Sequim — Treasures ‘n’ ThriftIn Forks — Forks Outfitters Please note: Checks will not be accepted at Swain’s General Store.
