Things to bring - good walking shoes,
enough water and food for the day,
money for the gift shop, entertainment
(that will not distract the driver) for the
long drive.
We will be returning to the school
around 6:00 p.m.

EMERALD AWARDS
The 26th Annual Emerald Awards was held on June 6 in Edmonton. As a recipient of an Emerald Award
last year, Clandonald School’s Warriors of the Rainbow were invited to present one of this year’s awards.
Jake Oddan, Erin McCormack, Khye Jackson, Rylan Garnier, Trey Nowosad, and Robbie Oddan accompa-
nied Miss McCormack to the Awards. We arrived just after 3 p.m., and got a chance to practice our in-
troduction speech on the stage with the microphone. We then settled down in our reserved seats to en-
joy the awards.
Awards in thirteen different categories were given out. The finalists were introduced through their videos.
We found the various projects very interesting, especially Lacombe High School’s Pollinator project. They
have 125 fruit trees, many raised garden beds, a greenhouse with a 5000 gallon water tank where they are
raising organic tilapia, and they have 30,000 bees!
We were presenting the award for Individual Commitment, the last award of the evening. The winner was Ann Smreciu, a lady who has made it her mission to save seeds of native wildflowers and other native
plants, planting them on disturbed lands to reclaim these areas. Ann has done extensive experiments to
establish the best germination conditions for these species. Her lifelong ambition has been to see these
native seeds saved for future use in land reclamation throughout the province. Her dream was realized in
2009 with the creation of the Oil Sands Vegetation Cooperative.
After the Awards ceremony, we mingled with the other guests, enjoying the snacks and especially our vis-
its with other presenters and award winners. It was a long evening, but we learned a lot!
SCHOOL CALENDAR
Our school calendar has always been posted on our website and now BTPS has made the switch to
Google Calendar. It can still be found on the website, but now parents will be able to add an event from
the calendar to their own personal day planners, with notifications, or subscribe to the entire calendar.
Super handy right?!
Here’s how it’s done:
If you have a Google account - go to the school website calendar, click on the event you want to add,
and in the More Actions drop down select “Copy to (name of their calendar)” and add the notifications
you choose.
To subscribe to the entire calendar - open Google Calendar, click the drop down arrow next to Other Calendars on the left, select Add by URL, enter the following ICAL code: https://calendar.google.com/calendar/ical/btps.ca_fk2thgt1nf1tqvgusguv0a5vh0%40group.calendar.google.com/public/basic.ics in the text box, click Add Calendar.
If you use a different calendar app - the calendar is a public calendar and can be synced with other
applications. You still need the ICAL code above. Follow the steps of your particular app.
If you have difficulty with this, consider creating a Google account with your own email address and then
subscribe as per the instructions above.
As always, I encourage you to frequent our school website to keep up-to-date with what is happening at
the school.
