Conventional CD players could only repro-duce up to around 20kHz.Sampling takes place to convert digital sig-nals to analog. In this process, digitizedsound with a frequency range of up to abouthalf the sampling frequency is reproduced.For example, in the case of CDs which aresampled at a frequency of 44.1kHz, playbackis possible for up to half that, or 22.05 kHz.Sampling is set at 44.1kHz to achieve repro-duction of highs in the neighborhood of20kHz.

Harmonic elements included in high rangeadd richness and depth to sound.The format specifications for CD deemed thehigh frequency elements above 20kHz asinaudible by the human ear, and thus theywere not recorded. And even if such high fre-quencies were reproduced during playback,they would be detected as noise elementsand removed by a digital filter. Not only that,but phase distortion was introduced as aresult of noise cut-off by the filter, therebyinhibiting the accurate reproduction of highfrequency sounds. Ironically, it is the harmonicelements contained in this high frequencyrange that affects the depth and nuance ofsound.

96kHz sampling enables reproduction ofsounds faithful to the original source.The 96kHz Sampling D/A Converter samplesat a much higher rate than the usual 44.1kHzto offer reproduction frequencies as high as48kHz (half the sampling frequency of96kHz), surpassing the format specificationsfor CD as the first such D/A Converter for caraudio use. By broadening the sampling range,it becomes possible to reproduce the subtlenuances and depth contained in harmonicelements while reducing phase distortion inthe high frequency range, delivering the fullexpressiveness and natural resonation that isinherently present in sound.
