Specifying Ball Checks on Water Gage Valves

• Ball Check Valves (Reference: “Automatic Shutoff Valves” in the Appendix of the ASME Boiler Code)• A-18 in the Appendix of Section 1 defines the design requirements for this User OPTION. • Ball Checks are not mandatory. • Consider the application, before specifying Water Gage Valves with the Ball Check feature. We suggest them for limited applications.

Water Gage Glass Guidelines• Verify compliance with ASME Section I requirements• Confirm serviceable condition of gage glass• Consider viewing orientation of the gage for operator convenience• Consider gage design alternatives based on:

– Viewing distance required – Atmosphere (indoor/outdoor/hazardous)– Design pressure– Water quality– Illumination requirements– Potential for mirrors to save stair climbing

Simpliport Bi-Color Water Gage Glasses

• Operate on the principle of light refraction

– Light refracts through water different than steam– Displays “Green” to indicate the presence of water

and “Red” for steam.– Gage must be outfitted with an illuminator

in order to be Code Compliant

Advantages of Simpliport Design

• Single Nut design to retain glass = less fasteners than others = less maintenance time

• Welded body design permits repairs to individual body sections for a fraction of the cost of a replacement gage.

• Lighter weight design compared to others.• Replacement parts remain available for

previous models, and now include the heavier mica shields for longer life

Simpliport Water Gages• Suggest a Maintenance log for users

to record ports that have been serviced. Replace remaining ports, after 30% have been replaced.

• Red crescent shape in green area below level (meniscus line) generally indicate internal contamination.

• Illuminator and Hood misalignment may affect image on older models without LED Illumination.
