    overcomin in times of conflict- he kne$ times of obscurity and rievous backslidin? but- as he once$rote to his sister 1uusta- / am lad to say that this disease Fa smallpo+ e+perienced in hinaG hasbrouht me back to my Saviour- and / trust in future to be a better hristian than / have beenhitherto. hom the &=D loveth #e chasteneth- and scoureth every son $hom #e receiveth(#ebre$s '2;6). /n the timin of 3ods "rovidence- 3ordon "asha met his end on the mornin ofAanuary 26th '885- t$o days before the %ritish relief column reached the ne$ly sub@uated city ofhartoum- $here the unbo$in 3ordon had held out to the end. Ie shall be hated of all men for ,y

    ames sake; but he that endureth to the end shall be saved (,atthe$ '0;22).

    =osalind 3oforth- a anadian hristian missionary- $as another $ho lived in '9th century hina thatave a lo$in recommendation of the value of larkes Scripture "romises. She $rote of thefaithfulness of 3od in her testimonial book- #o$ / no$ 3od 1ns$ers "rayer. *hey shall abundantlyutter the memory of *hy reat oodness ("salm '45;). 1s she- her husband Aonathan- and her fourchildren faced the bloody onslauht of the anti7foreiner- anti7hristian %o+er =evolt of the secretsociety #armonious ists of hina ('900)- they $ere advised by the 1merican onsul in hefoo toflee from the city of hante in orth #onan to the coastal seaport of Shanhai. o $eapon that isformed aainst thee shall prosper (/saiah 54;'). n the mornin of Auly 8th '900- their small partyof missionaries $as restin at an inn in the small to$n of #sintien- $hile a boisterous mob a$aitedthem outside castin stones and demandin their money. =osalind $rote-

    #ints had been iven us of comin daner- but that $as all? none spoke of $hat all felt 77 that $e$ere probably oin to our death. Suddenly- $ithout the slihtest $arnin- / $as seiBed $ith anover$helmin fear of $hat miht be a$aitin us. /t $as not the fear of after death- but of probabletorture- that took such a$ful hold of me. / thouht- an this be the hristian courae / have lookedforJ / $ent by myself and prayed for victory- but no help came. Aust then someone called us to a roomfor prayer before ettin into our carts. Scarcely able to $alk for tremblin- and utterly ashamed thatothers should see my state of panic 77 for such it undoubtedly $as 77 / manaed to reach a bench beside

    $hich my husband stood. #e dre$ from his pocket a little book- larkes Scripture "romises- and readthe verses his eyes first fell upon. *hey $ere the follo$in;

    *he eternal 3od is thy refue- and underneath are the everlastin arms; and he shall thrust out theenemy from before thee? and shall say- Destroy them. *he 3od of Aacob is our refue. *hou art my help and my deliverer? make no tarryin- my 3od. / $ill strenthen thee? yea- / $ill help thee? yea- / $ill uphold thee $ith the riht hand of myrihteousness... *he &ord thy 3od $ill hold thy riht hand- sayin unto thee- ear not? / $ill help thee. /f 3od be for us- $ho can be aainst usJ e may boldly say- *he &ord is my helper- and / $ill not fear $hat man shall do unto me.

    *he effect of these $ords at such a time $as remarkable. 1ll realiBed that 3od $as speakin to us.ever $as there a messae more directly iven to mortal man from his 3od than that messae to us.rom almost the first verse my $hole soul seemed flooded $ith a reat peace? all trace of panic

    *he %ible is a book of such transcendent $orth- and so happily suited to all the parts and purposes ofthe hristian life- that it can never be too much recommended to the $orld? every thin that allures the

    $orld to peruse it- is a blessin to mankind. 1nd thouh it is hard for our narro$ capacities to rasp

    and take in its several distinuishin e+cellences at one vie$- yet- if $e take a separate survey of thedoctrines and duties- the promises and threatenins- the prophecies and histories- $hich are containedtherein- each of them $ill afford us an a$ful or a delihtful prospect- $ith lessons for specialimprovement.

    *he $orthy author of this collection- $hich / have lon kno$n $ith esteem and honor- has chosen toreduce all the most useful and important promises of the ord of 3od into order- and here set them

    before us. *hese are the most po$erful motives of duty? these are the constant food of a livinhristian- as $ell as his hihest cordials in a faintin hour. 1nd in such a $orld as this- $here dutiesperpetually demand our practice- and difficulties and trials are ever surroundin us- $hat can $e do

    better than to treasure up the promises in our hearts- $hich are the most effectual persuasives to fulfilthe one and sustain the otherJ #ere are laid up the true riches of a hristian- and his hihest hopes onthis side of heaven.

    *he materials $hich are collected here are all divine- and the disposition of them is eleant andreular? so that it is an easy matter to find somethin suited to the frame of our souls- or our present

    $ants on every occasion? and that soul $ho kno$s $hat a suitable promise is $orth in an hour ofdarkness or temptation- $ill never think such a $ork as this- and such a various treasure- can havesufficient value set upon it.

    *hose $ho have little leisure for readin- may find their account in keepin this book al$ays nearthem? and $ith the lance of an eye they may take in the riches of race and lory- and derive many as$eet refreshment from hence- amidst their labors and travels throuh this $ilderness. /t is ofe+cellent use to lie on the table in a chamber of sickness- and no$ and then to take a sip of the river oflife- $hich runs throuh it in a thousand little rills of peace and @oy.

    ,ay the #oly Spirit of 3od- $ho indited all these promises- and our blessed ,ediator- $ho- by hisministry and by his blood- has sealed and confirmed them all- render them every day more and morepo$erful and prevalent to dra$ the hearts of men to$ards 3od- and to fit them for the en@oyment ofthese $ords of race in their complete accomplishment in lory. 1men.
