style—inspiration—confi dence

Eric Daman, costume designer for Gossip GirlForeword by Leighton Meester

Emmy-winning costume designer Eric Daman (of the hit show Gossip Girl) presents a guide for women to learn the basics of style, get inspired, and then break the rules with humor and originality.

As the head costume designer for Gossip Girl and an Emmy-winning designer for Sex & the City, Daman knows how to turn characters into icons through their clothes. Now, he shows how any reader, no matt er her fashion background or lack thereof, can create looks that are showstopping, beautiful, yet practical for real life. Aft er teaching the reader style, shape, and silhouett e basics, Daman frees her to make her look her own—mixing and matching, and adding signature pieces. With absolutely no sense of snob-bery but with a ton of charm, he teaches women how they can use inspiration from the world around them to look and feel gorgeous—and unique—every day.

ERIC DAMAN is the costume designer for Gossip Girl and previously won an Emmy for his work on Sex & the City. He is the creative director of Charlott e Russe, one of the biggest mall-based fashion stores in the country. LEIGHTON MEESTER plays Blair Waldorf, the “Queen B” of Gossip Girl. She has been featured on the cover or in the pages of hundreds of fashion magazines.

Rejiggering how you approach food and gather your groceries may sound

like a chore. But it does not have to be. It’s empowering to know that every good choice we make as shoppers keeps harmful chemicals out of the earth and our bodies. Every dollar we spend sends a message to the

powers that be that consumers want better food. And never ever forget that besides the underlying crucial environmental and health issues, the whole point of

maintaining an eco kitchen is pleasure—and taste! I’m talking first-of-the-season sweet peas, cherry tomatoes off

the vine, fresh-picked raspberries—delicious. If you look at this eco-changing or shifting of shopping

methods as a decision to seek and eat only the best- tasting ingredients available, rather than focus on

how it may be a somewhat abstract effort to save the earth, it will never feel like a chore.

Fun-to-make cakes that taste

as Good as they look

kaye Hansen and Liv Hansen Foreword by Meredith Vieira

The Cake Bible meets Dr. Seuss in this delightfully original guide to baking and decorating, uniquely eye-catching celebration of cakes.

Three neon-bright layers of cake, tilted at a jaunty angle; a Jackson Pollock–inspired cheesecake spattered with choc-olate, caramel, and peanut butter icing; a starry night cake—these are only a few examples of the unfettered creativity at work at the Riviera Bakehouse. Kaye and Liv believe that a cake should taste as good as it looks, so they skip esoteric (and inedible) decorations in favor of amusing designs and fabulous flavors that are easy to make and delicious to eat. With time-tested tips and complete information on every-thing from mixing colors to adjusting pan sizes, The Whimsi-cal Bakehouse is the ultimate guide to creating delicious, showstopping confections that are completely original.

kAYE HANSEN is a self-taught baker and the owner of the Riviera Bakehouse in Westchester. LIV HANSEN was trained as a painter before turning her eye for color and composition to buttercream and melted chocolate. The bakery has been featured in the New York Times, and the Hansens have appeared on the Today show, Food Network, The Early Show and The View. Both Kaye and Liv reside in Rockland County.

And, it’s all organized perfectly and presented beautifully.

about embroidery flossThread and yarn for embroidery come in many colors and textures. The standard is cotton embroidery floss, a glossy thread made up of six strands that can be separated from one another to create finer weights. Silk and rayon threads also come in divisi-ble strands. (Two strands are good for most woven fabrics; a single strand will do for lightweight vintage fabric.) Wool yarn comes in three- or four-ply weight and cannot be separated into strands, so it is best suited to heavy fabrics such as canvas or the thickest linen. Be careful about sticking to the rules here: Bulky thread on fine fabric will pucker the material; light threads embroidered on heavy cloth can be difficult to see. Only when a thread is the proper weight for a particular material will it create the desired appearance: gently raised stitches—the kind you want to touch—with a satin finish on a smooth background.

4 embroidery | tools and materials

An embroiderer’s tools include:

1 dressmaker’s carbon paper for print-ing a temporary design on fabric

2 iron-on transfers for printing a tem-porary design on fabric

3 embroidery hoop for holding fabric in place while you stitch

4 silk thread—similar in weight to floss—for higher sheen

5 Wool yarn for canvas and other heavy fabrics

6 cotton embroidery thread, often called floss, the most common and versatile thread

7 linen thread, for a matte, nubby ef-fect

8 a hot-iron transfer pencil, for draw-ing a design onto tracing paper, then ironing it onto fabric

9 a disappearing-ink marker for draw-ing directly onto fabric

10 embroidery scissors for snipping very close to the fabric for the tidiest results;

11 embroidery needles—fine, sharp nee-dles for fine cloth; larger, blunt-ended needles for canvas.

1. Make sure your hands are clean before you handle fabric or thread. Transfer your selected design onto right side of fabric using one of the methods de-scribed on page TK.

2. If desired, place fabric in hoop: Loosen the screw on the side of the hoop. Lay the fabric flat and right-side up with the area you want to embroider over the inner ring. Place the outer ring over the inner ring, and pull the fabric evenly taut; tighten the screw. Each time you stop stitching for the day, remove the hoop so it doesn’t leave a mark on the fabric.

3. Thread embroidery floss through a needle. Use lengths of floss no longer than 18 inches to avoid knotting, twisting, or fraying.

4. Don’t knot the ends of the floss, or it will leave marks. Instead, secure floss with a few tiny backstitches (see page TK), or pull it through at least 1 inch of the float-ing threads of already existing stitches. Clip the ends of the floss carefully. Start and end each length this way.

5. When your project is finished, use a soft brush to re-move any tracing marks that might still be visible. Or, if you used a disappearing-ink pen to draw your de-sign, hand-wash fabric with warm water and mild soap to remove ink. Rinse in cool water. Squeeze, but don’t twist, fabric, and hang to dry. While still damp, sandwich fabric between pieces of clean, white linen, and iron it on the reverse side using the medium-heat setting.

Melissa Leapman

Tens of thousands of knitt ers have att ended Melissa Leapman’s classes and bought her previous books because she simplifi es even the most complex material into manageable lessons (and chapters). This book is for her many fans and any knitt er inter-ested in not only color, but the how-to behind colorwork.

Knitt ers call themselves craft ers rather than artists, and they do so with pride. However, the lack of formal art training eventually catches up with them when they start to get creative and pick their own colors. Melissa’s authority and expertise make this a book that even experienced knitt ers will turn to time and time again.

In Color Knitting Basics, Melissa shares her extensive colorwork knowledge for the fi rst time—she includes color fundamentals, plenty of techniques, 10 original projects, and 70 stitch patt erns.

MELISSA LEAPMAN is a widely published knitwear designer, whose patt erns have appeared in every premier needlework pub-lication in the country, including Vogue Knitting, Knitter’s, McCall’s, Family Circle, Better Homes and Gardens, and Interweave Knits.
