Clash of Clans Introduction

Clash of Clans is a Social-Strategy game for iOS and Android mobile

devices. SuperCell, the creator, sprinkled in a dash of role-play in the

game where players construct villages and action play, introducing warriors

to defend the village.

Once you are ready, your warriors explore the area and go on excursions for

the purpose of pillaging neighboring villages so that they can increase their

clan’s wealth. Along the way, they must fight off monsters and enemy clans that they bump into.

Social strategy games are specifically designed to create an atmosphere where people can meet

in a safe online environment, swap tall tales, real life events and relax. These types of games

focus more on the consequences of decisions than on winning battles. Most people who play

Clash of Clans are non-aggressive players that enjoy friendly rivalry—something that make this

game suitable for youngsters.

Clash of Clans was designed to attract the 13-and-over crowd who enjoy personal challenges that

stretch their imagination to think out of the box; the game also requires minimal time to engage

in playing. As such, goals are reached in a matter of days or hours – depending on your skill set

and experience at gaming.

In a social-strategy game, it is often easier to play solo in the open fields where you may bump

into other players. When you meet another player ask them if they would like to play with you,

to take out a specific village ahead. In this way, you can see how well you work together and

make friends with players from anywhere in the world. After a while you may also want to form

a clan together.

Creating your own Clan can be done by random matching with other players—or even better--

you can invite family and friends to team up with you. The third option is to place an

announcement on one of the forum boards.

What’s New for 2014

Since its initial launch in 2012 on iOS mobile devices, SuperCell has been upgrading, modifying,

tweaking and expanding the game and access to the game. 2014 promises greater global

expansion, item/character additions and modifications of game activities.

One of the most rewarding aspects of playing Clash of Clans has been the interaction of users

with the company. While the company is not set up to respond directly to users on a one-to-one

basis, it does closely monitor the suggestions placed into the forum boards. Nearly every update

and tweak that has occurred in the last year has been the result of player suggestions.

Going Global

In late October, the developer received

investment funds from two major Japanese

companies, to assist in the expansion of the

game into the Asian markets. In cooperation

with SoftBank and GungHo, Clash of Clans

will be available to mobile users in Japan,

Korea and China. This is a huge development in the cutthroat business of online gaming.

The investment deal keeps SuperCell in control of all proprietary rights of the game. The

developer wants to maintain the purpose of the game rather than taking the chance that it will

become just another hard-hitting action RPG down the line. The producer prides himself on the

fact that they are creating games that have a positive social impact in bringing families together

in an electronic environment.

At the request – and suggestion – of players, SuperCell is going

to be adding Dueling Arenas for challenges, battles and events

where Clans can strut their stuff.

Players suggestions placed on the Forum boards are forwarded

to the producer for consideration. This is one of the many features that have been approved.

More Tiers Coming

Currently, there are three tiers of troops with P.E.K.K.A being the most

powerful. However, SuperCell has approved the creation of additional troop

Tiers.

Clan Growth Clans will have the option to increase in size by expanding to

100; it will also be able to have at least one more leader per

clan. This has been a long-requested update by players and

2014 will grant those wishes.

Customize Clan Flag

The advent of customizing clan flags will make it easier to identify villages,

troops on campaigns and in the upcoming battle arenas, combatants who are

challenging each other.

Build to Order Troops

This is a major tweak that will probably not show up until the end of

the year, but players will be able to control the troop builds or choose

an automated option. SuperCell has approved “unlimited” troop

builds for the latest versions coming out in 2014.

Replay Duration Increase

The problem of retaining replays when the system is undergoing

maintenance and losing any possibility of replays if you logoff will

be fixed in 2014. Data for replays will be secured while

maintenance is being done and you will be able to use the replays for up to 2 days after you

received them. Additionally, replays will go from 4 to 6.

In the Beginning …

Unlike most multiplayer virtual games, Clash of Clans is played with time limits. Raids and

campaigns are gauged by days and weeks while the life of items is gauged in days, hours and

minutes before they expire.

If you are killed in a raid or campaign within the time limit, you can hit the Replay button and

try again but these extra chances are limited, as well. This is why it is even more important that

you get a working knowledge of the various elements of this game before plummeting headlong

into enemy territory.

Start with Tutorials

Start by downloading the game to your SmartPhone, iPhone, iPad, or

other Android/iOs device. As with any game module, you will need to

create a game name and password for continued access.

Create a Game Center account! On your mobile device, find the “Game

Center App”. Login to Clash of Clans and launch it from Game Center

rather than an open area. This way you can protect your game from being lost if your mobile

device gets wet, lost or stomped on by the family horse, plus you can also protect all the

members of your clan from wandering around without you.

With that done, the very first thing that you should do is complete the tutorial – even if you are

an avid gamer.

Every game has its own structure and quirks and by reviewing the tutorial – it doesn’t take long

- you will know how to get started without messing your game up.

For those of you who like to skip “reading the directions”, you have two choices when it comes

to construction and accumulating resources.

You can buy Gems – for real money with your credit card – buy resources with your

Gems to start additional construction

You can let construction finish on its own during which time you will be accumulating

resources for free

Learn Before You Deploy

Gaming fans often have played several different types of games over the years and commonly

decide that they can “figure out” the latest game choice without any tutorials, hints or guides.

More experienced gamers have learned through the school of dead ended gameplay that tutorials

and guides get you started off in the right direction, saving tons of time and frustration.

Time Limits

Each element of the game has a set time limit to complete it. This includes the time to build

Town Halls, how long a shield will last, and how long a League Season lasts. Before you

embark on a course of action, check to see what you need in order to accomplish your goals.

Determine Your Long Term Objective

Even before you place you Level 1 Town Hall on your village map, you need to decide if you are

more interested in faster leveling or accumulating trophies. Where you plop your town hall in

relation to village walls will enhance or defeat your chances of reaching your goals.

Players that prefer faster leveling as a solo should focus on increasing Resources. It is not

uncommon that new players want to get the hang of the game by playing solo instead of in a

clan.

With this focus, there is the option to place your Town Hall outside the walls. This means that it

will remain unprotected and when the villagers run for cover, they must leave the walls and run

to the Town Hall--- making them unprotected, as well. However, you will gain gold and elixirs

faster if your TH is outside the walls.

For players who decide that they want

to eventually join a Clan, or have their

own Clan join a League, collecting

trophies will help in their endeavors.

For this objective, you need to keep

your TH safe from all possible attacks.

This means you need to place it inside the walls.

Understanding Levels

In most games, your level is determined by some combination of your Hit Points and Experience

Points. In Clash of Clans, your level is determined by a more complicated calculation that gives

weight to Town Hall level, achievements completed, destruction of opponent’s Town Hall,

completions in Single Player Campaigns, how many and how often you donate troops to another

village, the upgrade of buildings and structures, and how many obstacles are cleared.

All that said: your experience and player level has absolutely nothing to do with determining

any matchmaking for raids or amount of loot you will get, if you are successful. Trophies will

determine the matchmaking for your raiding choices and the level of your town hall determines

how much loot you will get if you raze the village.

Understanding Campaigns

There are Single Player and Multiplayer campaigns for every player after the tutorial is

completed. Single Player raids are called Campaigns and multiplayer campaigns are called

Raids.

The clan or player that wins the encounter is given a percentage of the loot of the loser.

The amount of loot that you’ll receive primarily depends on your Town Hall level vs. the

competitors Town Hall level. If you raid a village with a lower leveled TH, you will get minimal

loot – 10% - and lose experience points as well. This translates into losing gold, trophy points

and other elements that you have strived to achieve.

Understanding Achievements

Achievements are campaigns, upgrades or loot collections that you have achieved. When teams

and leagues are considering accepting you into their circle, they will look at your profile and see

what you have achieved. The Achievement list can be found here.

You can increase your trophies, gold, elixirs and gems by completing achievements—

irrespective of whether in groups or single play.

Elements of Game

Below is an overview of all the various elements in Clash of Clans that influence the strategies

you choose and the goals you wish to reach.

Town Hall

Pay attention to the “Build Time” for each level upgrade! Only one Builder at a

time can work on a structure. Town Halls upgrade to Level 10.

Below is a sample chart of the Town Hall upgrades.

Non-Combatants

There are 2 non-combatant types in the game. You get one builder and eventually

One villager while your Town Hall is Level 1. After all, a villager

has to have a place to go in case of attack.

Builder – You must buy at least one more builder in the tutorial since

building a village is not a one-man job. You can have no more than 5 builders’ total.

Builders are an industrious lot remaining on-the-job until a project is complete. Then,

they return to their hut and “z”s appear signaling to you that they are ready to work on an

upgrade. Your builders come with their own huts. So, you don’t have to buy them both.

Villager – Of all the characters in the game, villagers are the most aggravating! They

wander around the village with no apparent purpose and just when you don’t need them

to help the enemy, they will.

Troops

“Troops” is a classification of all your army members that you take into battle. One thing to

know about all troop characters is that they will not protect your village.

Interesting, huh?

Troops are broken down into the following categories:

Tier 1 – these are the weaklings of the troop world. They are best used in groups.

Sending your Barbarian against an enemy village is a suicide move. You need several

Barbarians of this level, working together in order to stand a chance. The

Archer is a long-distance fighter who attacks everything that is in her

range. Goblins are not the healthiest characters in the group, but they are

the fastest on the ground. They scoot and swipe resources, beating

spring traps and deal more damage than a Barbarian. These troops are cheap to train.

Tier 2 – these troops are actually specialists of your campaigns or raids. Wall Breakers

do just what they suggest – blow up walls. Wizards specialize in

superior targeting of firepower-- even if their firepower doesn’t have

long-term effects. Giants are the lumbering big guys who shove and

push their way through obstacles and defenses. Balloons are flying Wall

Breakers who drop bombs on targets that are hard to reach from the ground.

Tier 3 – these are currently the strongest of the regular troops. They are very expensive

to train and take a horribly long time to prepare for battles. Even though they can destroy

an entire village with minimal support, you might find that they are not

worth the price. P.E.K.K.A is the top dog of regular units. “She” is

a cross between a samurai and an armored hippo. She is hard to

kill with anything except Hidden Teslas – something like an

underground building that is activated when enemy units

approach.

Dark Elixir Troops are next in the line of up-level units. They have the appearance of

gargoyles come to life.

Heroes are high-level specialty troop units for multiplayer raids and league games,

mostly.

It’s vital to know that when you raid – win or lose – your troops do not return to your barracks –

they are, apparently, not the most loyal characters around. You need to be training troops

constantly, which can be costly if you are training Tier 3 units more than others.

And, don’t forget – you need to give troops away to your clan members! Only visiting troops

will defend your village. To get a thorough breakdown of all the troops, click here.

Buildings

Buildings are divided into four categories: Defensive, Resource, Army, and Other.

Defensive – includes armaments such as bombs, cannon and towers

Resource – mainly generate wealth for your village – gold mines, elixir drills, and

builder’s huts

Army – these are quarters for you troops-- including Army camp, barracks, laboratory,

spell factory, alters for the two heroes

Other – includes Town Hall and Clan Castle, as well as decorations and obstacles;

decorative items spruce up your village, making you feel more “lived in” and identifiable

– included are national flags, statues, torches and even ancient skulls that can be placed

on top of walls;

Obstacles include rocks, mushrooms, tree trunks – some regenerate, others do not and all

cost currency to remove but experience points can be gained in the process.

Spells

Unlike the magical quality of Spells in other games, these Spells are more like ammunition than

magic.

It takes about 30-minutes to make one spell.

Lightning – bolts shoot out from the sky and randomly damage air defenses and troops

Healing – a stationary ring with the power to heal only your troops that are in the circle,

but it only lasts 12-seconds so you have to use it strategically

Rage – increases the speed of your troops and makes your healer slightly more powerful,

takes 2 days to make a level 2 potion, lasts 1-second and is for Tier 3 only troops

Jump – level 1 spell takes 45-minutes to simmer completely, lasts 1-second and the only

upgrade costs 400,000 elixirs; it helps troops jump walls but dropping 2 jump spells in

the same area does not make it last longer.

Freeze – the “stop ‘em in their tracks” spell, Freeze immobilizes ground troops and

defensive building only; Level 1 Freeze lasts 4-seconds and takes 45-minutes to make;

Level 2 upgrade costs 4,000,000 elixir and lasts 5-seconds after 2-days of smoldering in

the lab.

For all the ins-and-outs of spells and ideas for using them, check them out here.

Gems

Everyone gets 500 Gems as a gift to start the game. After that, you must earn them or buy them

with real world money. Gems are one of the currencies used to buy items, upgrade resources and

complete troop training instantly when you’re in a pinch. For more information about Gems, this

is a reliable source.

Shields

Shields are one of the most important elements in the game. Imagine

allowing your bungling Barbarian to wander around a map, bumping

into enemy troops and stubbing his toe on rocks with no protection at

all!

At the opening of the game, every player gets a 3-day shield.

After that, you have to purchase one of three shields:

1-day Shield – cost 100 Gems

2-day Shield – cost 150 Gems

1-Week Shield – costs 250 Gems

There are no other shields. This is mentioned because some new player took advantage of one of

the “free cheats” and thought that he purchased – in real money – a 34-day Shield. There is no

such thing.

Shields are disabled during battles-- whether single or multi-player. If your village is attacked

and at least 40% is destroyed, you will get an “automatic” shielding for 12-hours to protect you

from further farming or raids.

Strategies

Even though Clash of Clans is a lower-key casual strategy game, it is more complex than a click-

and-play activity. There are all kinds of strategies – attack, raiding and elixir. Any strategy must

be weighed by how much it will cost you to replace the troops you deploy vs. the loot you will

get for the win.

Goblin Outpost – in the strategy provided, it recommends using 4 Giants, which is worth

the same as 80 Barbarians [for replacement purposes]; you can win using just 15

Barbarians; the loot is 40 Barbarians; this means you will replace your 15 used and gain

an additional 25 for free!

Goblin Gauntlet – better done with max of 20 Barbarians since your loot is only 80

Barbarians; pro tip, don’t use the Wall Breakers or Giants because you get no

replacements for those troops. This means you gain 60 Barbarians and replace the 20 lost

for free.

Gold Rush – use a maximum of 40 Barbarians, no Giants and 1 or 2 archers if you must;

you will win 160 Barbarians, so the archers you lose are not replaced at all. But you will

replace the 40 Barbarians and gain an additional 120. Hope you have enough space for

barracks. If not, give them to one of your clan members to protect his/her village and gain

experience points.

There are excellent sources for finding strategies for nearly every level and purpose. The first is

on SuperCell’s forum. The second is on the Clash of Clans wiki site.

The third source has been introduced by a high-level player, which includes videos for those who

learn better by seeing things in action. When you reach higher levels, Edepot’s guides and

strategies are superb; his video examples are also easy to follow. For Attack strategies submitted

by other players, the list is currently up to 2 pages.

If you want to know what your best bet is for barracks and unit distribution as you prepare to

raid, there is a tool that allows you to enter specific data.

Known Glitches

As with any eGame – especially one that is updating and expanding –

there are plenty of glitches to be expected.

Rather than listing complaints, the following glitches have been

announced by the producer--- according to the posts from SuperSteve @

SuperCell.

Unsupported Devices

The following devices have had difficulties in accessing the game. Point to note, this issue may

continue for some of them unless they meet the minimum specs. Some of the problems have,

however, been addressed and others will be fixed when the Asian market opens.

Case of Lost Villages

One of the issues that became apparent after Christmas 2012 involved the case of lost villages.

After much head scratching by top IT specialists, it became apparent that the problem was due to

people getting new phones.

The fix: Connect your village to Game Center before you change phones! When you get your

new phone or device, re-install Clash of Clans. Once you launch it, you will get a pop-up

window asking if you want to load your old village or start a new one.

This is worth repeating: If you haven’t already created a “Game Center account”, do so before

you lose your game to a watery cell phone death-- or the surprise birthday gift in the form of a

new phone. That done, locate the app marked “Game Center” on your mobile, login and launch

the game from that location. When you exit the game, it will save the most recent data to your

Game Center.

Tips from Top Players

The following are tips from the leagues top players and some professional players. We have

tried to cover a variety of topics that slow a lot of players down, as they try to Rank.

Attack Abandoned Bases –

This tip from Addicted is excellent; you probably won’t find more

than one abandoned base per day but what you can recover in loot

and experience opens your eyes to the potential.

WithouttheSarcasm adds:

Look for tombstones. Someone else has drilled here, traps have been

sprung or – less likely – chiefs had put them out to lure the unwary in.

Another key giveaway is to find all the builders in the village asleep. Remember, builders will

not defend the village. They’ll just snooze on!

Check out the Gold Mine Bin – the one to the right of the cart that is in the mouth of the mine. If

you are looking at a level 6 or higher TH village and the bin is full, the chances that the village is

abandoned are very good. All that gold just waiting for you to grab. Nice.

Troop Upgrading

While we discussed the strategy of comparing loot gained to troops lost at the end of a campaign

- and stressed the importance of weighing that before you charge – it is still important to upgrade

your troops past level one.

Every troop unit takes up a certain amount of barracks/castle space. Receiving 160 Barbarians,

instead 2 Giants may take up all the space your friend has available; they are useless in higher-

level raids.

Remember, when you are in teams or multiplayer campaigns, it is important to give away troops

to other clan members, every now and then. If all you have to share with them are Barbarians and

Archers, they may decide to leave your clan and find a new home where their needs are

respected.

Beware – Approach with Caution!

Why would any player of Clash of Clans even want a cheat or hack in the first place? This is a

casual, social game of strategy where there is no real world money at risk. There are no

professional players or competitions. With the time limits attached and the replays limited, by the

time a cheat could work – which they can’t – your time would be up.

The only people that benefits from any of the claims is those that gain

access to your computer, gets you to pay them money for their “sure

fire” thingee, and the people that they sell your information to. Now,

some hacker has the ability to steal your passwords and your money. Oh, you didn’t think they

would sell your personal info? Right.

Reasons Not to Use Cheats and Hacks

Cheats and Hacks are methods of cheating the game to gain levels faster. The ads and claims are

deliberately made to target young and newbie players who cannot wait around to increase gems

or to buy more resources. These campaigns also target those that cannot purchase gems in real

money.

If they are “free”, they are usually stuffed with tracking keys, stuffed with Trojans,

Worms, Malware or other codes designed to steal other players’ account information or

steal game codes.

The “extra codes” can disable your mobile device permanently and infect your Clan

members’ devices when they try to join you. A few years ago, one cheat that held a

stealth code shut down Sony games for months and managed to worm their way into

bank accounts around the world.

You place yourself in jeopardy of being permanently banned from any of the SuperCell’s

games. When you get banned by the developer, your IP address is banned – not just your

email address. Regardless of how many new emails you attempt to use to regain access to

the game, you will find that you cannot open the downloaded game.

Since most hacks and cheats are based on glitches in the system, they are known to the

producer and in the process of being fixed; once fixed, the cheat/hack is not going to

work. As a matter of fact, any hack will be unusable after any update, upgrade or fix to

the system --even if that hack was not using the glitch fixed. The reason is simple: code

protocols are rearranged in order to generate the repair.

Why Hacks and Cheats Cannot Work

Hacks, such as the one example below, cannot work because the game is designed to constantly

refresh and update any changes in your progress. When it comes across a piece of code that

changes your status drastically, the code is rerouted to a dumpsite because it is “not in sync” with

the rest of the program.

This is what coders learned to do after the Sony disaster.
