1.1 Class 321

The Class 321 is a design of Electric Multiple Unit based on the British Rail Mk3 body shape. It is also classed in some circles as the most reliable and trouble free EMU of the Mk3 family

(encompassing the Class 317 through to 325, Classes 455 and 456, as well as the diesel variants Class 150 and 210).

Intended for use of the Great Eastern Mainline from the outset, the units have also worked over the Euston to Birmingham and Doncaster to Leeds routes. Built in three batches, the

Class 321/3s for GEML, Class 321/4s for WCML, and Class 321/9s for the Leeds area.

Initially all but the Class 321/9s were delivered in Network Southeast colours, and featured

First and Standard seating. The 321/9s being destine for operation under Yorkshire Passenger Transport Executive and featuring high density all Standard seating.

Over the years, the separate allocations have intermixed, but since privatisation, movement

has been restricted.

The pantograph well should be at the centre of the formation.

4 car formations are often used on local and branch stopping services.

4, 8 and 12 car formations are used on off-peak fast services. 8 and 12 car formations are commonly seen on peak time fast and express service.
