EMPEROR AKBAR

Akbar was one of the greatest rulers of India. He ruled over

a large empire. He is often called Akbar the Great.

Akbar was born in 1542 to the Mughal Emperor Humayun

and his queen, Hamida Banu Begum. He was only 14 years

when he became the ruler. Akbar ruled over India for

nearly 50 years, from 1556 to 1605.

Akbar, the conqueror

Akbar built a large empire. He defeated many rulers. Some of them were:

Hemu, the general of the Afghan forces, in the Second Battle of Panipat.

Rani Durgavati, the Gond queen.

Maharana Pratap of Mewar in the Battle of Haldighati.

Chand Bibi, the ruler of Ahmadnagar.

The Rajputs ruled in Rajasthan. Akbar tried to get their support. He

treated them with respect.

With help from the Rajputs, Akbar made his empire strong and stable.

Akbar, the ruler

Akbar was a good ruler. He wanted to be loved and respected by the people. He

abolished many unjust taxes. He also reduced the taxes that farmers paid.

Akbar respected all religions. He treated people of all religions equally. He realized that

all religions taught the same thing.

Akbar suggested a religious path called Din-i-illahi. It was based on love, peace, respect

and tolerance.

Akbar got the Ramayana and the Mahabharata translated into Persian. He also

encouraged painters and musicians.

Akbar held a grand court. Some famous courtiers in his court were Mian Tansen, Abul

Fazl, Raja Birbal, Raja Todar Mal and Raja Man Singh. Mian Tansen was a singer.

Abul Fazl wrote Akbarnama, the biography of Akbar. Raja Birbal was Akbar’s

advisor.

Akbar, the builder

Akbar built the Agra Fort. He also built a new city near

Agra. He named it Fatehpur Sikri.

Akbar died in 1605. After him, his son Jahangir became

the ruler.
