Fundraising: Step by Step
“The students are very responsible and good at taking the reigns. Yes, I am still a teacher and they’re still students, but we get to interact on a new level. They’re much freer with their ideas and creativity since they kind of run the show.”
“Everything starts with an idea. We consider what people like, such as food and local places that are accessible so that we can get the most student involvement.”
“The Daddy’s Donuts fundraiser was only functional because we all worked together to incorporate the student body. It was a great way to raise money because it’s close, convenient and a food everyone likes.”

For senior Ana Osorno, it all started in ninth grade, when she decided to run for Northshore Junior High’s ASB Vice President. Three years later, Osorno has found class office to be “an integral part” of her high school experience, having worked her way up to Senior Class President. “I love getting to know the people in our senior class and planning events that can bring our class together. ” Osorno said.
Junior Jill Bush also was on ASB during junior high. Since seventh grade, Bush has represented her class. “I like being able to have a voice about our junior class and helping our whole class out,” Bush said.
Both of these presidents have had their share of fundraising troubles. The senior officers were planning a raffle fundraiser that involved students buying a ticket for a chance to win a day with a “senior sweetie.” Osorno said “We were super excited and started to plan it before finding out that selling raffle tickets to anyone under 18 is
actually illegal. That was very disappointing because we were very excited for it and had high hopes that it would go well.”
The junior class had trouble with getting people involved. “I don’t think many people realize that all of the activities and fundraisers class office does actually benefit them. All of the money that we raise will lower the costs for the senior activities. That’s why prom tickets can be so expensive,” Bush said.
Why then have they stuck with class office for so long? Bush said, “I chose to run for class office because I love being involved, and one of the easiest ways to do that is to be in class office.” Osorno agreed and said, “the best part is definitely knowing that I’m able to plan things that will get other people involved and excited for events. Especially senior year.” Written by Emily Best.
