Students will learn the basics of sawing sheet metal, filing, silver soldering, texturing, and forming. First, there will be demonstrations of these processes, after which students will practice that technique, then make samples using the processes shown. These samples will become the basis of a portfolio of techniques. At the end of the session, the new skills can be used to make a simple piece of jewelry. The Samo Ducky Project began in 2010 as a Firehouse Art Center initiative to develop an icon that would appeal to all ages and become a symbol of local arts by promoting and increasing the visibility of public art in the Norman community.

In 2011, the Public Arts Board (PAB) began searching for ideas to enhance our Norman Parks. The PAB liked the concept of the Cow Parade in Chicago and other similar projects, but wanted to create something unique, produced locally and that incorporated its mission, to create exciting, appealing, and harmonious public spaces through the integration of art into public places.

The PAB accepted a proposal to use the Firehouse Art Center’s original duck, “Samo Ducky,” designed by Douglas Shaw Elder. The PAB hired 3-D Extreme in Norman to cast fiberglass reproductions of the original duck and published a “Request for Proposals” to Norman artists to submit their visions of the duck sculptures to paint and enhance.

The goal of the duck project is to create a sculpture that is inviting, stimulating and that fosters social interaction while enhancing our community parks. In addition to Samo Ducky, residing next to the Firehouse in Lions Park, there are 23 ducky installations currently located in Norman:

The Art Education in Schools Initiative is the Firehouse Art Center’s effort to bring art education opportunities and experiences to students K-5 in the Norman Public School system. Along with Firehouse support, these programs could not exist without grants from the Oklahoma Arts Council, Norman Arts Council, and Allied Arts, and with generous individual donations. If you would like to support, volunteer for, or donate to the Art Education in Schools Initiative, please contact Douglas Shaw Elder by email at [email protected].

All in-school art education projects and programs introduce visual art education that connects the students’ current curriculum with the Oklahoma Academic Standards for Fine Arts: Visual Arts guidelines. Projects are designed to allow children to see their subject from a different viewpoint, to expand the ways in which they absorb information, and to express their understanding of their education in a vibrant way. Research has shown that children who can express themselves artistically will dramatically improve their skills of observation and retention along with their overall performance.

Kids Art is Smart at Lincoln ElementaryThe Kids Art is Smart (KAS) program began in 2009 through a partnership between the NAC, FAC, and Norman Public Schools. Recently, a new KAS pilot program was launched at Lincoln Elementary, in order to provide regular visual arts programming, which is imperative to fulfilling the educational needs of Norman’s schoolchildren. As a Title I school, a majority of Lincoln’s students face socioeconomic challenges that can make access to the visual arts extremely difficult. By combining the resources of a community non-profit and public educational institution, the new pilot program is making regular visual arts instruction a reality for the 327 students at Lincoln Elementary. The Kids Art is Smart program is currently reaching every single student, including those with special needs, children with developmental disabilities and autism, and students from disadvantaged socioeconomic circumstances.

COMMUNITY PARTNERSHIPS

Since September 2017, the Firehouse has provided free art activities to over 2,000 children and their families at community events in Norman.

This fall, the Firehouse partnered with the Plaza District Festival, TinkerFest at the Science Museum Oklahoma, the City of Norman’s Outdoor Movie Series, the National Weather Festival, and the Downtown Norman Fall Festival to provide 2,010 children and adults with free visual arts experiences.

Providing such opportunities for engagement would not be possible without the assistance of the FAC’s generous sponsors and supporters, including: the Oklahoma Arts Council, the Norman Arts Council, the City of Norman, Allied Arts, Republic Bank & Trust, Fowler Automotive, the Norman Transcript, and Red Dot Sculpture.

The Firehouse Art Center (FAC) is proud to announce that it has been selected as a recipient of funding by the National Endowment for the Arts (NEA) for the coming year. The FAC was awarded the Arts Engagement in American Communities grant to provide visual arts programming to underserved and underrepresented groups in the Norman community. Through the FAC’s community outreach, Healing Studio, and new programming for veterans, the organization is able to serve community members that often lack the opportunity to engage with the visual arts. The Firehouse has endeavored to reach these individuals by providing arts programming, offered at no cost to participants, that is accessible to people of all socioeconomic backgrounds and ability levels.

Receiving NEA funding is an honor for the Firehouse, as it represents not only monetary support but national recognition of the quality of programming developed by the FAC. All of the FAC’s programs are built around educational visual arts experiences that focus on self-expression, creativity, art history, and technical skills, with a foundational curriculum rooted in the FAC’s Creating with the Masters and the Oklahoma Academic Standards for Fine Arts: Visual Arts guidelines. The technical skills required of the projects and activities for these programs are adaptable and can accommodate individuals of all abilities.

The Firehouse is especially excited at the new opportunities this funding represents, particularly in providing visual art experiences for U.S. Military Veterans in partnership with the Norman Veterans Center and the Oklahoma Department of Veterans Affairs. In the coming year, the FAC will provide supplemental programming, based on its Healing Studio format, to individuals at the Norman Veterans Center. Each lesson at the center will include high-level visual arts instruction in mixed media, sculpture, and photography. Projects will be tailored to each individual, allowing them to focus on one medium or experiment with different techniques during each session. Outreach at the center will expand on a partnership with the Oklahoma Arts Council’s (OAC) Arts and the Military pilot program, which was facilitated by the Firehouse Art Center in 2016.
