Listed on the National Register of Historic Places, Callanwolde is a unique arts center that enriches the lives of metropolitan Atlantans year round.

Callanwolde Fine Arts Center is now operated and restored by the Callanwolde Foundation, Inc., a nonprofit, tax-exempt corporation. A Special Announcement

Restorations Completed Across the Callanwolde CampusThe restoration of three historic buildings on the campus of Callanwolde Fine Arts Center marks the first time in the estate’s history that every building on the property will be used for classes and workshops!

The Ruby Callaway Robinson Greenhouse was just completed this month; the state of the art climate controlled greenhouse, designed by the architectural firm Lord Aeck Sargent and built by Macallan Construction and Texas Greenhouse Company, will be used for Callanwolde’s School of Horticulture and Culinary Arts classes and workshops. The greenhouse has been named in honor of GreenHouse Foundation Co-Founders CeeLo Green and Shedonna Alexander’s grandmother, Ruby Callaway Robinson, and will serve as the new home for the GreenHouse Foundation’s School Partnership Training Program. The partnership training program will be an avenue to train teachers and families in the community to live a more sustainable life within their own homes. The facility will also be used as a training area for the Captain Planet Foundation.

The adjoining gardener’s cottage was originally the home of the Candler family’s live-in gardener. Today, it serves as the Rick Baker School of Music and Music Recording’s space consisting of three private lesson rooms and a computer lab. Macallan Construction made substantial repairs to the building’s interior; finishing was done by Macallan Construction and The Carpet Lady.

The third and final building to be restored is a barn, original to the estate, which was in disuse for decades. Thanks to restoration efforts by Gay Construction and Baldwin and Clark, the barn has been transformed to house a state of the art recording studio, utilized by Phil Tan (three time Grammy Award winning music engineer and Callanwolde’s Director of Music Recording) as well as our Rick Baker School of Music and Music Recording program. The restoration efforts of this building, designed by Lord Aeck Sargent, won a preservation award by the Georgia Trust for Historic Preservation.

All of this was made possible by community members, like you, who donated to our Capital Campaign! Support arts education in your county and help us keep class tuition affordable by becoming a member of Callanwolde today. As an added bonus, you’ll save on classes and events at Callanwolde!

Callanwolde School of Horticulture & Culinary ArtsCallanwolde Fine Arts Center is thrilled to announce our new Ruby Callaway Robinson Greenhouse!

Callanwolde is delighted to be partnering with The GreenHouse Foundation by helping our community through our horticulture program. The GreenHouse Foundation was founded by entertainer CeeLo Green and his sister Shedonna Alexander. Honoring a family tradition of community service and philanthropy, the organization was created to continue the legacy started by their grandmother, Ruby Callaway Robinson, Executive Director of CASCADE, a national nonprofit organization dedicated to addressing the issues of drug use and abuse amongst our nation’s youth, and their late mother, Sheila J. Callaway, an ordained minister and one of the first African American female firefighters in the city of Atlanta, Georgia.

The GreenHouse Foundation was founded to educate, inspire and influence school-aged children in disadvantaged areas to become responsible stewards of their environment, communities and future. Renovation is now complete on the Ruby Callaway Robinson Greenhouse, which will be used for our new Callanwolde School of Horticulture and Culinary Arts and the GreenHouse Foundation’s educational programs.

Student Spotlight

Callanwolde Music Student: KhaliqHow have Callanwolde’s programs impacted your family? Khaliq’s mother, Michelle, says this:“When I was growing up, my mother made sure that I had exposure to the arts. Some of my best memories from my childhood are of dance classes, painting, music lessons, seeing plays and attending arts festivals. Although I am a single mother of three children, and it can be hard to afford such exposure, I really want my children to have the opportunity to pursue their interest in the arts.My son, Khaliq, has loved music since he was a baby. He has often expressed his desire to make his own music, and I know that in order to have the best shot at this he needs an early start. Callanwolde’s scholarship program is the only reason my son has been able to continue his lessons. Since taking lessons, I’ve seen Khaliq develop confidence, listening skills, and a wider appreciation for different types of music and art. It’s also given our family the opportunity for quality time and to give Khaliq the special attention he sometimes misses as the middle child. Additionally, I’ve seen a huge improvement in Khaliq’s sense of responsibility since taking music lessons at Callanwolde.”If Callanwolde has positively impacted you or your family, we would love to hear from you! Please reach out to [email protected] with your story.

Callanwolde’s Newest Offering

Rick Baker School of Music Music Recording ProgramCallanwolde Fine Arts Center is thrilled to announce our newest Program: The

Callanwolde Music Recording Program. We are honored that this program is under the direction of Callanwolde’s Director of Recording Phil Tan, a three-time Grammy Award-winning sound engineer, who has generously donated his time and resources to help create this exciting program.

Atlanta is one of the top ten music recording cities in the nation, yet there has been a lack of music and recording educational programs and studios – until now. Callanwolde’s Music Recording Program is a curriculum of classes designed by Phil Tan to provide low-cost training that will be a great start to those interested in learning the art of recording. The Phil Tan curriculum includes Introduction to Music Technology, a three-part course. Upon completion of all three parts with a passing grade, students will earn the Phil Tan Music Recording Certificate which can be an aid for students to gain acceptance into college music recording programs and in some cases, earn college credit or get professional studio internships.

This is a great opportunity for people of all ages – including teens – who are interested in learning about recording and mixing and possibly aspire to work in the music business. Currently housed our music building, we have workstations for up eight students in each class, affording everyone personal attention from our expert faculty, coordinated by Phil Tan.

Phil TanPhil Tan, soft-spoken and the measure of calm, is one of the most respected and highly-awarded professionals in his field. Phil began his career at the age of 18, when, with little music experience (just some childhood piano lessons), he decided to focus on music post-high school. He was accepted to the prestigious Berklee School of Music in Boston, MA but he could not afford it. Instead, he chose Full Sail University in Florida and upon graduation, landed an internship here in Atlanta, which eventually led him to recording and mixing work with JD (Jermaine Dupri), a friendship and close working relationship that continues to this day. Phil Tan is a 3-time Grammy award recipient whose credits include bestsellers by Rihanna, Mariah Carey, Ne-Yo, Ludacris, Usher, Katy Perry, Janelle Monae and more.

Rick BakerCallanwolde is fortunate to have Rick Baker on our Board of Directors. As a Wealth Management Advisor with Merrill Lynch, Mr. Baker has been honored with numerous awards and recognitions, and has served on many boards including the American Cancer Society, the American Red Cross, the National Board of Trustees of the Leukemia Society, The Rainforest Foundation and Steven Tyler’s Janie’s Fund. He was awarded the Champion Award at MCNY for his philanthropic work. Rick Baker is a musician, vintage guitar collector, music enthusiast, and, for Callanwolde, a benefactor. The Rick Baker School of Music and Music Recording is a wonderful legacy that provides music instruction to people of all ages; we are most thankful to Rick and his family for this patronage.

Formula to a Hit WorkshopWe are thrilled to have Atlanta-based Traci Hale return for this amazing workshop!

Traci Hale began her career as a backing singer for R&B stars Keith Sweat and Aaliyah. It was while on tour with Aaliyah in 1996 that she shared songs that she had been writing privately, and soon thereafter began collaborating with others, including Rodney Jerkins - the two of them worked on the Dr. Dolittle soundtrack and Brandy’s breakthrough album Never Say Never. Traci went on to write hits for Mýa, Britney Spears and others. In 2010 Hale co-wrote the song “What’s My Name?” with Ester Dean and Stargate, which became a number one hit on the Billboard Hot 100 for Rihanna. The Formula of a Hit Workshop focuses on Songwriting and Dissecting the way hit songs are arranged. It will discuss the anatomy of a song, picking the right melodies, studio etiquette, rewrites, split sheets, and choosing a PRO (Performing Rights Organization).

Students are asked to bring their laptops and own personal Wi-Fi hotspots and a sack lunch.

NEW! Strings ProgramThe Strings Program offered at Callanwolde Fine Arts Center’s Rick Baker School of Music and Music Recording is taught with a unique hands-on approach originally created by Atlanta Symphony Orchestra violinist Judith Cox for the LYRA Academy. Taught by Judith at the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra’s Center for Continuing Education from 2013-17, it is a successful strings group learning method drawn from several different sources, including the National Standards-based Expressions Music Curriculum.

This innovative method incorporates both private instruction in a group dynamic, and group instruction in an orchestral setting, to create a cohesive and evenly progressive learning environment.

Class sizes are small, allowing frequent one on one contact between students and teacher. Classes are designed for students from completes beginners to intermediate advanced levels.

Instruments taught: Violin, Viola, Violoncello, String Bass.

Required Materials for all classes: Orchestra Expression: Book One for chosen instrument, chosen instrument, music stand, rosin

Beginning Strings I/II (Grades 8-12 & Adults)Get ready to jump in! Designed for the complete novice, this class assumes no prior knowledge of a stringed instrument and requires no music background. Students learn to read music in the clef of their chosen instrument, while learning the basics: pizzicato and bowing, penta- and one- octave scales, double stops, rhythmic fundamentals, bow distribution, slurs, string crossings staccato and legato. Students will learn to play as an ensemble with a conductor’s beat, to harmonize and play different parts through the exploration of rounds and canons. Students become familiar with and perform works drawn from the Baroque and Romantic periods of classical music, as well as a broad spectrum of world folk, pop and other genres of familiar musical styles. Listening skills develop as students begin to recognize different styles and compositional techniques through guided listening sessions.

Instructor: Judith Cox, Violinist, Atlanta Symphony Orchestra Fee: $165 members/$190 non-membersMUS202 Mondays, January 8 – March 5 (skips Jan. 15)

6:25 – 7:25 PM 8 weeks

Beginning Strings II/III (Grades 8-12 & Adults)Prerequisites: The second of the CMS Beginning Strings Classes. This level assumes the student has a basic knowledge of his/her chosen instrument: proper position and bow hold, ability to play on three strings, to play D Major scale, and G and A pentascales, to read music in the proper key and clef, and to identify and play written rhythms. Violins and violas should be able to use 4th finger, string bassists must know third and first positions, and all should have familiarity with 1/8, ¼, ½, and whole notes and rests.

Course Description: Students continue working in Orchestra Expressions Book One and learn to play 4- part harmonies together with the help of rounds and harmonized music. Techniques include learning to use the whole bow, hooked bowings, détaché, legato and staccato. All instrumentalists will learn the fundamentals of string orchestra playing and will master knowledge and familiarity with all four strings: celli and basses learn to play in positions. Chromatic, G, C, E, d, and C pentascales, as well as G and C one-octave scales are covered in this course. Some selections will come from standard chamber orchestra repertoire, as students learn to watch the conductor’s beat, listen to each other for balance, intonation and cohesive ensemble playing, creating a solid foundation of string orchestra training and repertoire. Min. 10, max.

Judith Cox Strings Program Instructor

Judith Cox has been a member the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra (ASO) since 1994. Judith came to Atlanta from the Indianapolis Symphony Orchestra, where she served in both violin sections for six years; she was also Principal Second Violin for one season of the Cleveland- based Ohio Chamber Orchestra. A dedicated educator as well as performing artist, Judith created a unique hands-on group learning method (created originally for the LYRA Academy) which served as the curriculum for the String Program

at the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra’s Community Music School from 2013-17. As String Ensembles Specialist, Judith guided over 220 students (many with no musical background) from the complete beginning through the intermediate/advanced stages. The “participatory” learning approach welcomed students onstage as well as backstage after ASO concerts, and encouraged student community performances several times a year.

Community Music School Strings I, ADULTSPrerequisites: CMS Strings I has been designed for intermediate level students who have less than 2 years of orchestral experience or who have a need to review their knowledge and skills. Designed to prepare students for the more advanced level CMS Strings Advanced (offered in the Spring Quarter), to refine or review techniques, music theory and note-reading. CMS students who have taken at least one quarter of Intermediate String Orchestra or comparable instruction, or students who have established a firm foundation with facility in reading in the keys of D, G, A, rhythmic subdivision, and ensemble work through rounds and foundation studies, will be at the level to excel in these classes. Entrance interview for new students.

Course Description: CMS Strings I provides a solid foundation for entrance into the more advanced CMS Strings II. Designed for intermediate string students who have followed the program from the beginning as well as those who have taken a break for awhile, CMS Strings I prepares students to join the more advanced group for the Spring Quarter. Students learn major and minor keys in the Circle of 5ths, vibrato and tone production techniques, and ensemble skills through the exploration of chamber orchestra repertoire. CMS Strings I classes take students from the Basic Intermediate Level to more advanced levels with curriculum selected from a variety of sources, to create a solid foundation of string orchestra training and repertoire. Many selections will come from standard chamber orchestra repertoire, as students learn to watch the conductor’s beat, listen to each other for balance, intonation and cohesive ensemble playing.

Entrance interview for new students.

Course Description: CMS Strings II will focus this Quarter on ensemble skills through the study of chamber music. Selections will be chosen to challenge and stimulate listening skills and nonverbal communication; break-out sessions will pair students into smaller groups to facilitate ensemble skills. 23 TextilesWeaving classes which meet once a week on Tuesdays are comprised of students at all levels of weaving experience. Within each class, we have students working at all three levels of classes. Every quarter, a new overall topic for all levels will be discussed and projects will be based on that topic except for students in their first Beginner I class.

The Winter session will focus on the many aspects of Twill Weave Structures and the versatility they can give you. This will include network drafting and advancing twills which give you a more complex design element.

Beginner classes are an introduction to weaving and the basics of the floor loom. Students in their first class will weave a simple project, e.g. a hand towel or scarf in cotton. Students may continue to sign up for these classes weaving smaller projects in the overall topic of the quarter with close supervision from our teachers. In these classes, yarn will be provided by Callanwolde.

Intermediate students will weave projects based on the quarter’s topic. Students typically come in with an idea of what they want to weave and teachers will help in the execution of their ideas including providing guidance in the selection of size, yarn, structure, and finishing. Students will begin to use yarns of various fibers and fineness. Students will provide their own yarn.

Advanced students will closely study the topic of the quarter and design and execute their own projects with guidance from teachers as needed.

When the Levee Breaks: New Works by Alli Royce Soble On View January 11 - March 2, 2018“The works in this exhibition are a response to changes to my expectations of the world I, and we, inhabit.
