2011A leader looks at a seemingly impossible situation and proclaims “I Am possible”

The Global Youth Leadership Summit (GYLS) is a non-

profit organization designed to empower individuals

and organizations to make a significant difference in the

quality of life by using their potentials and gifts to

contribute back to society. Organized by the Anthony

Robbins foundation, GYLS trains and supports youths to

be leaders of their communities. 11 of us from all over

the country were selected to attend GYLS as

ambassadors, representing Malaysia. Our 6-day stint at

the University of California San Diego from the 26th to

the 31st of July included seminars with impeccable

keynote motivational speakers, team-building

discussions and leadership simulation games alongside

with roughly 156 youths from 24 different countries

globally.

People don’t care how much you know, til’ they know

how much you care.

Though the first day was nerve-wrecking, due to the

fact that we didn’t know what to expect or the type

of people that would cross paths with us, we still

walked in with our heads held high and hearts united

knowing very well that our purpose here was to

uphold Malaysia to its standards. Basically we

interacted and socialized with people who had

different perceptions and perspectives of life to offer.

Then, we kicked it off with an early get-to-know party

at night which involved brief introductions of

facilitators, youth coachers, alumni as well as us,

ambassadors! We played all out by screaming to the

top of our lungs, jumping around, grooving to the

beat of ear-blasting music swaying in the background

totally anxious for what tomorrow had in store for us.

Day 2 started off with a scrumptious and healthy

breakfast where we mingled around with our new

found dorm-mates. Upon heading to the conference

hall, exuberant cheering and mood-lifting music filled the

atmosphere. At first, we were shocked and a little uncomfortable

with the chaotic, energetic dance moves taking place inside the

hall. We then came to a point of realization that these peculiar

movements were known as PEAK STATE. Its significant is to

basically keep the energy high and running as well as to pump

everyone up before every session begins. In short, it was created

to boost our energy to maximum level! We were truly amazed at

how getting into a peak state helped increased our concentration

and focus throughout the summit which runs from 8.30am to

11pm daily.

One extra degree of effort can separate the good from the

GREAT.

We were fortunate to hear great content from some of our

wonderful speakers including Kathy Buckley, the first American

Deaf Comedienne who is regularly asked to speak at events all over the world. Kathy focuses her speeches on finding

humor in every aspect of life. Gary King also presented on the importance of integrity and honesty. On the other hand,

Anand Chulani, Stu Mittleman and Scott

Flansburg spoke about different life issues such

as forgiveness as the key to happiness,

relationship with oneself and others, finding

humour in our fears, walking in integrity and

using laughter as a tool to connect. Then we

heard from a great speaker who herself is a

GYLS alum, Katie Pitsis. Katie gave a presentation

focused on the dangers associated with social

networking and how to appropriately use

popular social media services like Facebook and

Twitter to connect with others. She also gave

information on how to handle cyber bullying.

After a picnic lunch, we got started on their

team games.

If you don’t stand up for something, you will fall for anything.

By day three, we were very comfortable with our teams. Although all of us were scattered, that never deterred us to

meet up and share our first two phenomenal days. Next came the Board Breaking session. We were asked to write

our limiting beliefs on one side such as the things that hold us back from accomplishing our goals and purposes in life

or the very things that make us insecure and lower our self esteem when dealing with intense situations. We then put

a big X through the limiting mind set. On the other side, we subsequently pen down adjectives to describe our feelings

once the devastating mind set of ours had been defeated and conquered. In short, the board breaking session is a

metaphor to symbolize breakthrough from the negative beliefs that are constantly standing in the way of our desires

to live life to the fullest. All of us broke through the barriers in our minds and we felt overwhelmed with confidence

and were able to focus on our capabilities.

The first lecture found everyone contemplating and commenting during another compelling talk by Marlon Smith on

the Power of Choices. Anecdotes from Marlon’s own life highlighted how the choices that we make shape our own

destiny. Next, comedian Kathy Buckley prompted more laughter by having participants not only develop their own stand-

up routines but get up stage in front of their peers and do them! The routines were all about turning tough personal

experiences into comedy and were universally hilarious. Felix Lin succeeded Kathy, by providing techniques essential to

removing negative beliefs and creating new positive beliefs. Our Youth Coaches then took the stage to reveal how they

have been using their G.Y.L.S. knowledge to contribute to their communities. What an outstanding and powerful group

of Leaders they are now! Next Brian Mayne imparted a great deal of wisdom on goal mapping and what is necessary

in achieving your goals. C+B=A, Conceive in your mind, Believe in your heart and YOU WILL ACHIEVE! These extraordinary

people played an imperative role in helping us unleash our potentials within. They spend their time, wealth and effort,

travelling from country to country in the hope of reaching out and inspiring young leaders.

Knowledge is only potential power. Applied

knowledge is powerful.

Day four and five were totally about the

importance of clear communication. This is simply

because communication defines the quality of your

conversation. There is no communication without

a response. Therefore, we are called to be

democratic instead of a dictator, to communicate

instead of command. The words we speak, the

language we use, can bring life or destruction.

Owing to this, we must be wise in carefully picking

our choice of words because they make up 7%

where as tone 38% and body language 55% of our

message which is being transmitted forward.

Your choice today determines your decision

tomorrow which ensures your destiny.

On the last day, we were all given the opportunity

to contribute to community by planting young

trees on campus. The gesture of giving back and the trees as a symbol of hope and future generations had a significant

impact on everyone. Up next was our graduation party and award ceremony where we were promised that it would

be an even more emotional event with comedy, prizes, an ice-cream buffet, and a recap! Although we were leaving

the next day no one wanted it to be over. Everyone was ever ready to start making a bigger difference and put forward

what we had learned at Global Youth Leadership Summit 2011!

To lead we love, to save we serve. Each one, reach one. Each one,

teach one.

Six days of adventure, 144 hours of self-discovery, and 8640 minutes

of journey with all walks of life from various countries opened my eyes

and convicted my heart to the very things we were blinded before. From

the first day till the very last day, the amount of life-enriching and

transforming knowledge we learnt is more than we can contain and

therefore, we’ve made a commitment to one another that we would

bring about change in society once we returned home to Malaysia. GYLS

was indeed a magical experience that had changed and touched many

lives. Watching how our once immature friends turn into awesome and

mature leaders, we were truly amazed at how much looking at things

from a different perspective can make such a difference. GYLS taught

us that the world demands results and not excuses. It showed us how

to be leaders and lead by the core values of life such as honesty,

integrity and forgiveness. Through thick and thin, we stood together and

with every mountain conquered, the bond between us become even

stronger. The thing that had the biggest impact on us was how much

can be achieved with a positive attitude and a strong belief. Everyone in this world is blessed with the gift of choice

and no one has the right to take that from you. In every situation we face, we have the choice to stand up for what

is right. We learnt that if you don’t stand for what is right, you would be thinking “what if” for the rest of your life.

After the summit, each and every one of us Malaysians made it a point to step up in faith to be role models to our

peers, families and even communities. We may be youths today but we’re definitely, without a doubt, leaders tomorrow!

We started a group called M4M which simply means Miracles For Malaysia to empower youngsters to take up that

leadership role in making a stand in our changing world today. “Raising tomorrow’s leaders today” is our dynamic motto.

Though this group, we have planned several activities in future such as visiting old folks’ homes, autistic children, natives,

organizing charity concerts and events, random acts of kindness which include stick-it-up, encouraging bookmarks, badges

and shirts. We have successfully done our very first project which was FREE HUGS and it was very successful. You can

check out the video and more upcoming events on our page in Facebook which is ‘Miracles for Malaysia[M4M]’. Making

a difference in Malaysia doesn’t need to begin with our country leaders as we too are called to lead by trusting our

instincts and doing what’s RIGHT.

We are, we can, we will and we must!

“Dunia tanpa sempadan”. Begitulah bunyinya pengertian

ringkas globalisasi.

lelaki berbanding anak-anak perempuan. Kalau perkara

golongan wanita.

Pandangan konservatif ini menyebabkan

perbezaan gender masih berlaku di banyak pelosok dunia.

Misalnya, di Republik Korea, ketika krisis kewangan

melanda rantau Asia pada akhir 1990-an, bilangan

pengganggur wanita menjadi 7.1% berbanding dengan

pengganggur lelaki yang hanya 3.1%. Hal ini jelas

menunjukkan golongan wanita dianggap lemah dan tidak

berdaya dari kaca mata majikan. Maka, sebelum “kudis

menjadi barah”, isu perbezaan gender wajar ditangani

dengan memanfaatkan pendidikan ICT. Persoalannya kini,

apakah kepentingan pendidikan ICT dalam era globalisasi

yang tidak membezakan gender.

Antaranya ialah pendidikan ICT yang adil dan

saksama penting untuk memastikan aspirasi kerajaan untuk

melahirkan masyarakat yang bermaklumat atau “k-society”

tercapai.

Masyarakat

yang berpendidikan ICT tidak akan terpedaya dengan

“umpan” penjenayah siber. Secara tidak langsung,

penurunan kadar jenayah siber akan mendorong

peningkatan modal insan negara.

mula memencilkan diri. Kita akan ketandusan bakat-bakat

muda kerana kebanyakannya sudah terkubur akibat

diskriminasi gender dalam pendidikan ICT.

Jikalau ditinjau dari aspek sosial, pendidikan ICT

tanpa diskriminasi gender akan mengurangkan risiko

eksploitasi gender. Dalam hampir kesemua bidang, kaum

lelaki sentiasa mendapat keutamaan.

penting. Penglibatan kedua-dua gender , iaitu lelaki dan

wanita dalam pembangunan negara boleh disamakan

dengan analogi lampu. Cas positif dan cas negatif

diperlukan agar lampu menyala.

mendominasi bidang ICT.

pasaran global melalui Internet.

air bah, sekali pantai berubah”.

perjalanan, hanya membaca satu halaman.”

generasi muda bak kata pepatah, “jauh berjalan banyak pemandangan, lama hidup banyak dirasa”.

bangsa, pemudi tiang negara”.

berkewajipan bak kata pepatah , “baling batu sembunyi tangan”. “Ibarat sambil menyelam, sambil minum

membezakan gender.

The Malaysian Education Department organized a 1Malaysia Foster Family Program

from the 10th

to the 15th

of March 2011. From many of the school leaders, I was

chosen to represent our school in this program. This program was important for

student leaders like us as it was able to encourage us to interact socially amongst

all the participants, a 1Malaysia initiative. This program also enabled us to

experience the different cultures of our foster families and various local

communities. The handing over ceremony of the participants to their respective

foster families was held at Institut Aminuddin Baki, Genting Highlands on the 11th

of March 2011.

After the ceremony, I was able to get to know my ‘ father ’ for the rest of the

program, Tuan Haji Mohd. Anuar bin Abdul Hamid. He was the Ketua Penolong

Pengarah Sektor Pengurusan Kaunseling dan Disiplin, Bahagian Pengurusan Sekolah Harian at Ministry

Of Education, Putrajaya. He is also the chairperson for Seni Silat Gayong Daerah Gombak. At first, he

brought me to his house in Taman Melawati, Ulu Kelang. He told me to get cleaned up and brought me

to his office in Putrajaya. During dinner that night, he shared with me the importance of teamwork in

an organization or club. One is only a leader when he creates another leader.

The following day, we went to the market as a family to buy things for lunch. After breakfast, my ‘

father ’ brought me to ‘Program Ujian Kenaikan Bengkong Seni Silat Gayong. Here, he gave me a rundown

of silat and its history. Silat is made of two arts, “seni bunga” which is to confuse the opponent and

“seni buah” which is to attack the opponent. Coming back from the program, he shared his opinion

about leaders with me. A leader must be one who is able to speak in public, and speaks from the

heart. He also continued that new generation of leaders tend to give up hope very soon. I was shocked

to find out that he had lost his right leg in an accident and is actually using a prosthetic leg now. He

advised never to give up, as tests are

from God to test our courage and

determination. Listening to him, I myself

felt a positive energy in me, ready to

face the challenge of life. The next day

at breakfast, my ‘ father ’ also shared

about the importance of a chairperson

in an association. He told me that it

is not only the chairperson’s duty to

plan the activities and run the project,

but the chairperson must also

distribute the tasks evenly to all the

members and then guide them.

Later that day, we went to the Closing

Ceremony of “Kursus Seni Silat

Olahraga”. There, he taught me the history about silat olahraga. I felt very lucky to be chosen for the

1Malaysia Foster Family Program as it has truly left some positive effects on me. Throughout this

program. I have been able to make many friends and build new relationships. The three days I spent

with my foster family were a priceless experience. I am glad to have been able to join this program

and I hope that more programs like this will be organized to enable us to achieve Gagasan 1Malaysia.

Thank you.

Name: KHIEW TIEN JIE, delegate from Malaysia

Age: 16, Form Four

School: St Michael’s Institution, Ipoh.

Programme: Pacific Rim International Camp (PRIC) 2011

International Camp

A photo taken in Tokyo with delegates from various countries within the Pacific Rim. (Standing fourth from

right is me)

Report:

I received a letter of acceptance from the organizer of PRIC indicating that I was accepted to be a delegate

from Malaysia. Naturally, I was jumping with excitement because I could visit a country I heard and read

so much about, going there with perhaps some other Malaysians. It was not the case as I found out later

- I was the only delegate from the country! The application was extremely tough. I had to answer difficult

and tough high level essay-type questions detailing my personality, skills and my aspirations. Nevertheless,

I tried to tackle the questions, with a little bit of sceptism. I sent over the application and two weeks later,

I received a favourable reply from the organizer from Tokyo. Yes, I made it.

Despite this trip being my very first overseas and also my first time flying, I was not nervous. Perhaps, it

was the encouragement I got from my parents and friends. When the approval of a visa came from the

Japanese Embassy, I knew I was going to learn something useful in Japan. After a week of preparation, like

getting the necessary gear, attire and other needs, I flew to Narita Airport from Kuala Lumpur International

Airport on 29 July 2011. I spent my two weeks exploring the cultures, traditions and lifestyles of the Japanese

people. The people there were very accommodating and offered very good hospitality to their guests. I

stayed with my host family for a few days and it was during that time I learnt about traditional Japanese

life.

The program, Pacific Rim International Student Camp is about promoting the spirit of “Friendship, Leadership

& Fellowship”, and to deepen the cultural appreciation and international understanding among the youths

from Pacific Rim region by living together at the educational camp program.

I made new friends from Japan, United States, Thailand, Indonesia, the Philippines, New Zealand, Korea,

Australia and Canada. We had no barriers – we talked, laughed and joked with one another. We appreciated

each other’s cultures, life practices and friendship.

I returned home to Malaysia on 14 August 2011.

Why is my trip to Japan meaningful? Because there are some people who made my trip there possible. I

thank my parents for their support and Mr Phoon Chong Chee, the school principal for his strong resume

and recommendation.

My trip to Japan to undergo this program was borne entirely by the alumni of the PRIC, currently holding

important posts in big corporations and the public sector. I express my appreciation to them for making

my trip there possible. Here in Ipoh, I must say thank you to Mr Adrian Tsen Keng Yam, the Executive

Director of Riverview Rubber Estates Bhd, for his kind gesture in extending me financial assistance. His

generosity has indeed allayed my initial worries about my expenditure in Japan.

QUIS UT DEUS

Thank you again.

I am in the middle, wearing the yukata with my host family.
