EDITORIALWelcome to our second birthday issue. We hope you have enjoyed them so far and we look forward to bringing you more interesting and unusual articles, features and photographs in the future. In this issue we cover a wide range of motorsport, including a little 2 wheeled action from Shelsley Walsh. We also have reports on a couple of Classic car

shows. It is nice to see that these events are well attended with both a large turn out of vehicles and also a good attendance of spectators. Shelsley Walsh also seems able to draw a good crowd to their events, even in this harsh economic climate. It was great to see the Coventry Festival of Motoring return after its one years absence and that a large crowd turned out to its new home at Stoneleigh.Another passion of ours is GT racing. There seems to be a large number of championships for these cars which seem to stretch the entries a little thin at some races. It would appear that some form of consolidation will probably take place over the next couple of years and we will have more GT action in the next issue.

GT1 World Championship loses promotor for 2013. The FIA GT1 World Championship will no longer be promoted by SRO, who started at Abu Dhabi in early 2010. SRO, which started 20 years ago, has confirmed the launch of a GT World Series which will expand on the success of the Blancpain Endurance series and the heritage of the GT1 World Championship to produce a new sprint series for GT cars. Several teams have expressed an interest in the new series and it is hoped that a field of at least 24 cars will be on the grid in 2013.

The appearance at the popular Muscle Car Masters meeting has meant an earlier than usual start for the 2012/13 MSC NZ F5000 Tasman Cup Revival Series. The first New Zealand round is the now traditional one at the Lady Wigram Trophy meeting at Christchurch's Powerbuilt Tools Raceway at Ruapuna Park in late October, then it will be back to Sydney Motorsport Park for some of the competitors for a non-points round at Australia's big Tasman Revival meeting in late November.

The points rounds then resume at the Hampton Downs circuit back in New Zealand for the two NZ Festival of Motor Racing - celebrating Denny Hulme meetings over consecutive weekends in late January before the series heads south for the annual Skope Classic meeting in Christchurch and Classic Speedfest meeting at Invercargill's Teretonga Park in February.

Professor Eric Sidney Watkins OBE FRCS6th September 1928 to 12th September 2012.

Born in Liverpool in 1928, Professor Sid Watkins was best known for his leading safety role in modern Grand Prix racing. A World renowned neurosurgeon, Professor Sid had served twenty six years as the FIA Formula One Safety and Medical Delegate, head of the F1 on track medical team and first responder in case of an on-track accident. He has saved many drivers lives directly, including Gerhard Berger, Mika Hakkinen, Rubens Barrichello and Karl Wendlinger to name but a few, and has been responsible for helping to improve safety standards in modern Grand Prix racing. He started his motor racing career driving his only event, the 1955 West Africa Rally in a Ford Zephyr Zodiac and retired after the first stage. He was stationed in West Africa at the time serving in the Royal Army Medical Corps. After returning to the UK he started his motorsport medical career at Brands Hatch in 1961. He met Bernie Ecclestone in 1978 and started in the position of Official Formula One race Doctor at the Swedish Grand Prix. After Ronnie Peterson suffered a fatal crash at Monza in the same year, and Professor Watkins was not allowed to assist the injured driver by local police who had surrounded the ‘fatally’ wounded driver after the accident, for over 18 minutes, Sid insisted that Bernie provide better medical equipment, an anesthetist, a medical car and a medical helicopter, which were in place by the next race.Sid was married and has four sons and two daughters. He died of a heart attack aged 84, on the 12th of September. To his family and friends we would like to offer our sincere condolences.

Lewis Hamilton Switches to Mercedes. In a surprising but not totally un-expected move, Lewis Hamilton has finally ‘left home’ by moving from McLaren to Mercedes Grand Prix team. He will replace seven times World Champion Michael Schumacher in the Brackley based team and joins Nico Rosberg as equal number one driver in the team. Lewis has been supported by McLaren and Mercedes for many years and won the 2008 World Championship for McLaren Mercedes. Lewis is quoted on the Mercedes web site “It is now time for me to take on a fresh challenge and I am very excited to begin a new chapter racing for the Mercedes AMG Petronas Formula One Team. Mercedes Benz has such an incredible heritage in motorsport, along with a passion for winning which I share. Together, we can grow and rise to this new challenge. I believe that I can help steer the Silver Arrows to the top and achieve our joint ambitions of winning the World

Championship.”Mercedes Benz Motorsport Vice President Nobert Haug has supported Lewis throughout his career from Karting, to Formula 3 and in to Grand Prix with McLaren. He is looking forward to seeing Lewis at the wheel of a Silver Arrow next season in the tradition of previous British Mercedes Benz Grand Prix drivers, Sir Stirling Moss and Richard Seaman.

Can Lewis turn the Mercedes Grand Prix car in to a World Champion?

Baby Bertha damaged at Donington Park

Photo sequence by Mick HerringBaby Bertha, the iconic Supersaloon of the late 1970s that was driven by Gerry Marshall to many victories, has been damaged in a Super Saloon and Modsport race at Donington Park on Saturday 15th September 2012. Joe Ward, the current driver of Baby Bertha, had been fighting for the lead of the race when as they approached the Fogarty esses at the end of the Dunlop straight he found he could not get a gear. Braking harder to compensate for the lack of engine braking, the car veered left then spun to the right

and slid down the grass still at high speed. He slid sideways across the esses, and collected Joss Ronchetti in the Sunbeam Lotus Bullet. The front right corner of Baby Bertha hit the rear right side of the Lotus Bullet , blocking the track. Baby Bertha was beached on the high kerb with broken steering and damage to the radiator and front bodywork. Joss managed to restart the Lotus Bullet and drive round to the pits after the Red flag.

Donington Historic Festival 2013 to Celebrate Ayrton Senna.

May 4th and 5th 2013 are dates to put on your calendar, as the Donington Historic Festival will celebrate the career of the late, great Ayrton Senna. It will be 20 years since Senna won the wet European Grand Prix at Donington Park in 1993 and it will be 30 years since Ayrton first sat behind the wheel of a Formula 1 car, when he tested the Williams Cosworth FW08 of Keke Rosberg at Donington Park on July 19th 1983.The Festival continues to grow and in 2012 had races that covered 60 years of motor racing with cars from the 1920’s right through to the Group C sports cars that raced at Le Mans during the 1980’s. For more information on the Historic Festival, please visit their web site at www.doningtonhistoric.com.

Seen at Kop Hill. By Pete Austin

Glorious weather on the Saturday of the two day Kop Hill Climb Revival event held on the 22nd and 23rd September attracted a huge crowd. Located near Princes Risborough in Buckinghamshire the first competitive event was held in 1910 and the venue continued in regular use until 1925 when a well documented accident brought an end to competitive motorsport taking place on public roads in this country.

This was the fourth running of the ‘Revival’ event with Chevrolet being the lead sponsor this year. The once rare red Kites were evident over the venue in the morning but during the lunch break the crowds were treated to a display by a Spitfire MkXIX from the Battle of Britain Memorial Flight. Once again Dick Skipworth brought his collection of Ecurie Ecosse historic racing cars together with the iconic transporter.

This event always attracts a variety of cars and motorcycles of all ages which gather in the pleasant grassed paddock area at the bottom of the hill. These images will hopefully give some idea of the sort of vehicles to be seen.

BARC SBD Midland Speed Championship Shelsley Walsh 22nd September 2012

By Simon & Janet Wright In glorious sunshine, the final weekend meeting of the year took place at Shelsley Walsh with a round of the Midland Hill Climb Championship. There was a good entry for the meeting which also contained a motorcycle class to add a little variety to the meeting. Conditions were bright but the autumnal coolness made the track remain a little slippery in the shadows, meaning that the esses were a challenge for the faster drivers. Midland Automobile Club (MAC) member Terry Graves proved more than a match for the conditions, setting the fastest time of day at 26.68 seconds in his 3.5 litre Gould GR37 to beat John Jones in a Pilbeam MP88 by 0.54 of a second. Darren Gumbley finished third in his 1100cc class Force PT. Paul Howells in his Porsche 911 RSR won the class in the Porsche Club Speed Championship with a time of 31,78 seconds and David Hardcastle won the TR Register class in

hisTriumph TR7 with a time of 37.09 seconds. The motorcycles had a Top Ten run off which was won by Ben Wilkins riding an Aprilia. His time of 30.59 seconds was actually slower than his time during the runs where he managed 30.36 seconds to the top of the hill. Paul Jeffery on a Honda CR was second and Sam Matthewman was third on a Suzuki TL1000S. Richard Smith had a nasty fall from his Suzuki TL coming out of Top Ess when he clipped the bank and went off in practice, but it was good to see him in the afternoon

run offs where he finished 8th. There were a couple of ‘chairs’ (motorcycle side car combinations) entered. The passengers are either the bravest people in motor sport, or the most foolhardy! It was interesting to see the two different styles of the passengers on various parts of the hill. Sara Dewell leaned her head and body out on left hand bends while Simon Foster on the Honda F2 stuck his backside out for left hand bends. Of the two sidecars, it was

Mark and Simon Foster who were the fastest on the Honda F2 with a time of 37.75 seconds. It was also interesting to notice the difference in riding style of the bike riders. The Moto-X riders stick their feet out heel first in to the corner and only lean the bike slightly, whereas the bike racers keep their foot on the bike, and stretch the knee out at a 45 degree

angle and tip the bike over until their knee is about to touch the kerb. The fastest biker in the run offs was a racer.

Derek Bell Trophy and Classic Formula 3 races Oulton Park Bank Holiday Monday

After dry qualifying on Monday morning the two Derek Bell Trophy and Classic Formula 3 races were both conducted in extremely wet conditions. With eight different prime classes covering 1600/2000cc Formula 3, Formula 2/Atlantic, F5000, Classic Clubmans plus an Invitation class, just about the whole spectrum of European and American single seater categories are welcomed. The traction advantage of Jeremy Smith's F1 6-wheel March 2-4-0 would net a strong second place in

race 1 from the Invitation class.

In race 1, when the strong challenge from the spectacular F5000 Lola T400 of Michael Lyons came to an end after 8 of the 10 laps, Richard Evans' nimble pole position F2 March 742 established its dominance over the 6-wheeler to win by 3.8secs, a feat he would repeat in race 2.

Michael Lyons was black flagged into retirement following a weld fracture on the rear wing support, with no fix available his day was done.He drove for a couple of laps without the rear wing, only dropping to fourth in the process, a testament to the natural skill of the 21 year old in such a powerful car with no rear grip in the wet.Making it an all-March podium was Mark Dwyer's F2 742, 40secs adrift(pun intended) of the 6-wheeler and being pursued closely by the four F3 cars of David Shaw (ex-Nelson Piquet Ralt RT1), Simon Jackson (Chevron B43), Jamie Brashaw (March 793) and David Clark (Argo JM6).Frank Lyons' Eagle FA74 was first F5000 car in 8th ahead of Michael

Hickson's Mallock Mk20B Clubmans. An interesting car not seen before was the aero-less early F5000 Lola T140 of Richard Summers, looking fabulous from its recent restoration it would finish 15th with the slightly younger T142 next up.

Race 2 started dry with all of the front-runners starting on slick tyres but it didn't end that way with the rain soon falling for the remainder of the 18 minutes. With enough of the race conducted in the dry, most drivers elected to stay on their warmed slicksRichard Evans (F2 March 742) again led from pole to a lead he would not relinquish. The F1 March 2-4-0 held 2nd until retiring after 2 laps.

Trailing Evans to the flag by 23 secs, Mark Dwyer (March 742) consolidated his second place.Race one retiree Neil Glover (F5000 Lola T330/332) had to defend his third position from Frank Lyons (F5000 Eagle FA74) for much of the race but he slipped to fifth after Tom Bradshaw (F3 Argo JM6) got by.Michael Hickson's Mallock Mk20B Clubmans was sixth. It was Frank Lyons who most succinctly described the nature of the conditions experienced during those two races to me later.

Martini Trophy Race Oulton Park Monday 27th August By Mick Herring.

Sunday's planned first race for the Martini Trophy was cancelled following a first corner accident which culminated in the 2 litre Chevron B26 of John Burton, who raced theses cars in period, rolling over and prompting an immediate red flag. The driver was, thankfully, largely unscathed but the rescue services would, understandably not rush the righting of the car or the extraction of it's driver. The 2 litre cars are split into four classes, class A for open cars with wings, class B open cars without wings, class C open and closed cars that ran prior to 1971 in FIA European or British Sportscar championships and class D largely Classic Sports 2000 cars.Beginning at Hockenheim in April and finishing at Dijon via the three British rounds, the five event Martini Trophy, now in its second season, had Monday's race at Oulton Park run on a wet track with the class A Chevron B23/36 of Nick Fleming making the most of his pole position to establish a lead from Steve Hodges' Chevron B31 ahead of the Lolas of David Gathercole (T212c) and Michele Liguori (T296).Starting from row 3, James Dodd's Chevron B31 (for impressions of my ride in this car see www.classicandcompetitioncar.com June 2012) soon made his way past the cars in front to begin the chase that brought this race to life in wet and slippery conditions.

They would pass and re-pass several times, particularly at Lodge/Deer Leap, during the course of the race but the final decision would go to James Dodd's Martini-liveried Chevron by nearly 33secs ahead of Nick Fleming and Michele Liguori's Lola completing the class A and overall top three.Jonathan Loader's Chevron B19 was class B victor in 4th, Sam Carrington-Yates' Chevron B16 class C winner 5th.Chris Snowdon was first of the class D cars home with 6th overall in his Sports 2000 Tiga SC80.A fitting race for the Bolton-built Chevrons on what was always their home circuit.

HSCC/HRSR "ByBox" Historic Touring Cars Oulton Park August 27th By Mick Herring

A measured drive in both dry qualifying and an extremely wet race gave the experienced Mike Gardiner pole position and a lights to flag victory by 10secs in the HSCC/HRSR "ByBox" Historic Touring Car Championship race at Oulton Park on August Bank Holiday Monday.A good start from row two by Dan Cox's Lotus Cortina saw him chase Gardiner's big Ford Falcon for several laps until Mike could establish a gap, a later misfire saw Cox

drop to 13th.In worsening conditions the smaller, more nimble Mini Cooper S', Hillman Imps and a Ford Anglia took the next six spots. The "giant killing" was lead by Roger Godfrey (Austin Cooper S) 2nd, David Heale Hillman (Hillman Imp) 3rd, Roger Phillips (Cooper S) 4th, Simon Benoy (Imp) 5th, John Pugsley (Ford Anglia) 6th and Mike Kearon (Cooper S) 7th. The Imps were giving away engine capacity and beating the Minis just as they did in their 1960'-70's British Saloon Car Championship winning heydays.A race long battle between the Ford Mustangs of (F3 team boss) Richard Dutton and Warren Briggs saw them in 8th and 9th with a similar Mustang battle netting 15th and 16th for Louis Bracey and Gregory Thornton.

Coventry Festival of Motoring. 25th-26th August 2012. By Simon & Janet Wright.

This event used to be held in War Memorial Park near the centre of Coventry and was used as a base for the Shakespeare run, a sixty mile run around rural Warwickshire. Last year the event had to be cancelled due to the inclement weather, but now it has returned, bigger and better and at a new home. Now located in Stoneleigh Park, just outside Coventry, the event was held over the August Bank holiday weekend and still included a historic vehicle run around the beautiful South Warwickshire countryside on the Sunday. With the extra facilities available at Stoneleigh, the show included a Future of Transport Expo located in one of the parks many indoor exhibition halls. Over 20,000 people attended the event with over 1000 historic vehicles on display, and the

historic run took place over 50 miles on the Sunday, making it the largest one day

classic car run of its type anywhere in the world. Despite a few showers on Saturday the sun shone down on the park as the cars returned from their run on the Sunday. The large outdoor area gave ample space for both car clubs and private entries to display their cars. Coventry has been home to many car manufacturers and lots of examples of local cars were on on show. There were various awards for furthest distance travelled to the event, best locally built car plus best car in show which was won by Mike Stanley’s Vauxhall Viva.

Archive photo of the month By Pete AustinThis month sees the town of Bourne in Lincolnshire celebrating the 50th anniversary of Graham Hill's World Championship with BRM. This months image is a bit more recent being taken at the 1973 Race of Champions at Brands Hatch. Niki Lauda is shown rounding Druids in his Marlboro sponsored BRM P160D. Three BRMs' were entered for this race and took the first three positions on the grid. Jean Pierre Beltoise was on pole with Lauda alongside him and Vern Schuppan just behind on the second row. All of the BRMs' suffered from serious tyre wear and Beltoise had to be content with 6th. The other two cars retired with Schuppan crashing at Clearways and Lauda retiring with a loose battery lead. The race was famously won by a F5000 car, the Chevron B24 of Peter Gethin.

GT Cup Brands Hatch 18th/19th August

By Mick Herring.Brands Hatch's Grand Prix circuit, bathed in the weekend's hot sunshine, played host to a big crowd at the Lotus Festival and the GT Cup' would include one of their favourite manufacturers cars, Chris Randall's Europa. However, most eyes for these three races would be focussed on the anticipated battles between the McLaren MP4-12C of Jim and Glynn Geddie and the Chevron GT3 of Jordan Witt, both race winners already. The McLaren was not ready for the official practice session and so joined the BMWs during theirs in order for Jim to get in some track time with the car.The promised grids had been depleted due to various reasons during the preceding week, with Saturday morning's practice and qualifying sessions accounting for more broken cars including Richard Chamberlain's spectacular orange Porsche 935.

Race one was a tight four-way battle between Jim Geddie's McLaren, the Chevron GT3, Kevin Riley's Mosler and the Lotus Europa with

the lead going to the McLaren. The lead pair managed to establish a breakaway with Jordan Witt's Chevron GT3 finally overcoming the McLaren and building a near-14second gap at the flag over Jim Geddie.Chris Randall's Lotus Europa would progressively lose its brakes and slip back by a lap but still retain class 2 victory and 4th overall, allowing Kevin Riley's Mosler a comfortable 3rd.Colin Broster's Porsche 996 and David Witt's Chevron GR8 would bring up the final two places.

Sunday morning's Race 2 would be the young-guns showdown, with Porsche Carrera Cup star, Glynn Geddie taking over the McLaren from father Jim, for the very first time to race against Chevron's Jordan Witt. The pole-position Chevron would only hold off the McLaren for the first half lap before its power advantage overcame the yellow car four times but the nimble Chevron would exit the corners out in front. The spectacle was short lived as Jordan Witt's Chevron lost power and slipped back from Glynn Geddie McLaren, the pair finishing 1m 03secs apart.

Geddie would go on to lap all but the Chevron GT3.Third place went again to a heat-exhausted Kevin Riley after a race long fight with Randall's Europa. Randall only headed Riley's Mosler twice but a late re-occurrence of braking issues allowed the Mosler to take 3rd by 0.438 sec.Colin Broster and David Witt filled the final two places.

Race 3 Jordan Witt soon overcame Jim Geddie's early lead to pull out a considerable gap until around half distance, when the McLaren began to close in.Jordan Witt responded to take his second win of the hot weekend by a margin of nearly 7secs from Jim Geddie.Kevin Riley took his triple third place after Chris Randall's Europa retired with a broken

driveshaft after six laps.Colin Broster and David Witt again took the final two places.

Goodwood Revival 2012By Simon Wright.

The 2012 Goodwood revival saw a sell out record breaking crowd of 146,000 people attend the 3 day event which celebrates the golden days of motor racing from the past. The entire circuit takes a step back in time, with a large percentage of the crowd also dressing in period costumes from the 1940s, 50s and 60s. Beside action on the track, there were plenty of historic and static displays to enjoy and in the air were tributes to Goodwoods contribution during the second World War as an active airfield. There was a once in a lifetime gathering of Silver Arrows which gave a daily demonstration around the circuit, showing how Mercedes Benz and Auto Union dominated grand Prix races before the war. There was also a tribute to the 50th anniversary of the Ferrari 250 GTO and the AC Cobra plus a special tribute to All American Racer Dan Gurney. The track action is very competitive as was shown by the St Mary’s Trophy for Saloon cars from the 1950’s. Rob Huff put the little Austin A40 on Pole position ahead of the bigger and more powerful Mk 1 Jaguar of Anthony Read. Read took the lead from the little BMW of Jackie Oliver but Huff was soon in to second place and fighting Read for the lead. After a fantastic race where the lead changed many times Rob Huff came out the winner of Part 1 of

the St Mary’s trophy from Anthony read in second place and Jackie Oliver 3rd in the BMW 700. After the second race, the overall Trophy went to Anthony Read and Justin Law driving the Jaguar Mk1.The main race of the meeting was the Royal Automobile Club Tourist Trophy celebration. With a grid estimated to be worth over £175 million and lots of star drivers entered, the race proved to be an enthralling event. Red Bull designer Adrian Newey spun his Lightweight Jaguar E-Type on the first lap after being challenged by the similar car of Gary Pearson, and Newey dropped back to last place. His charge back through the field and the skilled driving of his co-driver Martin Brundle gave the duo an unexpected but very worthy victory.Gary Pearson made up for his disappointment in the RAC Tourist Trophy by winning the Whitsun Trophy for late period sports racing prototypes driving a LolaT70 after a battle with last years winner Jay Esterer in his Chinook Mk2 and Roger Wills at the wheel of a McLaren chevrolet M1B

Cooper Tires British F3 Series Silverstone 8th-9th September By Mick HerringIn Saturday's first Cooper Tires F3 race, pole-man Alex Lynn jubilantly took his maiden F3 victory, or so everyone thought until he was later adjudged to have anticipated the start, creeping forward before the lights went out. He was not alone as Jack Harvey also did it, consequently both received a 30sec penalty.

On the road Alex Lynn crossed the line 10.6secs ahead of Jazeman Jaafar but with the penalty applied he was classified 4th with Jaafar taking the win.Highlight of the race was the race long battle between Carlos Sainz Jr and Jack Harvey, the young Spaniard taking 3rd from Harvey on lap 1, holding it throughout the race despite Harvey's constant pressure until a daring drive round the outside of Sainz on the final corner of the race netted him a temporary 3rd until his 30sec penalty re-classified him 8th. Thus the amended top six order was:- Jaafar, Sainz, Harry Tincknell, Alex Lynn, Pietro Fantin and Rupert Svendsen-Cook. The three National class contenders "Spike" Goddard, Pedro Pablo Calbimonte and Duvashen Padayachee rounded out the twelve finishers in that order.Sunday morning's second F3 race of the weekend with its the reversed grid would

be even more fraught than the previous day's running. Jack Harvey and Pipo Derani managed to take each other off at Brooklands. Derani retired with suspension damage and the stewards handed Harvey, who resumed in 3rd, a 30secs penalty for the incident following a review of video and also a five place grid-drop for the final F3 race of the day for a separate weaving incident blocking Derani. The lead of the resultant three car battle remained with Felix Serralles to the flag despite a grassy half-spin moment which 2nd place Alex Lynn had to spin to avoid contacting Serralles, this allowed Harvey through to 2nd on the road but with his penalty applied he would be classified 10th.Alex Lynn rejoined to finish 5th. The intermediate positions went to Jazeman Jaafar 2nd, Pietro Fantin 3rd, Rupert Svendsen-Cook 4th, Lynn,

Carlos Sainz Jr 6th and Duvashen Padayachee winning the National class.Alex Lynn secured his second maiden win and kept hold of it this time in the final F3 race at Silverstone. Starting from pole position he slipped to 4th on the opening lap but managed to claw his way back to 2nd and over an eleven lap tussle managed to regain the lead from Jazeman Jaafar with three laps remaining. Some close racing from Harry Tincknell and Hannes Van Asseldonk saw them finish in 3rd and 4th respectively, ahead of Carlos Sainz Jr and Pietro Fantin. Similarly close, often too close, racing from Felix Serralles and Jack Harvey netted 7th and 8th.But it would be Felix Serralles who would leave Silverstone in an ambulance after an excursion pitched the front of his car high in the air.The resultant impact upon landing bruised his back badly and caused a substantial delay to the following race of whilst he was extracted from his car. Jazeman Jaafar's second place put him back into the lead of the Cooper Tires British F3 International Series with only three races remaining at Donington.

British GT Silverstone 3hr 9th September By Mick Herring.

Silverstone's 3.66 mile Arena GP circuit was the perfect setting for the penultimate round of the 2012 British GT Championship. The speed in the bright/dry conditions would however throw in a few variables in the shape of time or "drive-through" penalties for exceeding track limits, a phenomenon affecting more and more races, especially when the hard-charging pro drivers are on track. It would also play host to the second double winner of the season, by the United Autosports McLaren driven Charles Bateman and Matt Bell after three hours of intense racing. As the red lights went out it was Duncan Cameron's M-tech Ferrari 458 that set the pace from pole position.A first corner coming together between, 2011 winners, Andrew Howard's Beechdean Aston Martin and Riki Christodoulou's Team WFR Ginetta G55 would see the Aston Martin make an early visit to the pits for brake repairs, eventually finishing 15th.The unharmed Ginetta soon passed the M-tech Ferrari building a substantial lead, followed by Alex Buncombe's Nissan GT-R and Bateman's McLaren.

It was after the first round of stops that the face of the race began to alter with the leading Ginetta dropping down the order to an eventual 14th with gearbox and brakes problems. But as the pro drivers pressed ever harder, it was the exceeding tack limits penalties that made their presence felt, first with a warning

and then a five second stop-go penalty but with the board/flag held out for so long, from my vantage point, it was impossible to determine who the penalties applied to.Reigning champions Jim and Glynn Geddie, returning to British GT for the first time in 2012 with their McLaren MP4-12C, led the race briefly after half distance until a too-short pit stop earned them a 16sec stop-go penalty dropping them to fifth. It was here that the United Autosports McLaren would take a lead that it would only relinquish temporarily, during a pit stop, to the Ecurie Ecosse BMW Z4 GT3 of Ollie Hancock and Alasdair McCaig, who finished 20.6 secs behind the McLaren at the end of the three hours. The BMW was forced to slow towards the end by an oil leak and visible plumes of smoke.Despite overshooting its pit box (as did it's sister-car), the Motorbase Porsche 997 GT3 of Danielle Perfetti and Michael Caine retained third ahead of Ginetta boss Lawrence Tomlinson and Mike Simpson in the works G55 after an entertaining battle. The mighty Mercedes of David and Godfrey Jones was 6th ahead of the early leading M-tech Ferrari which was slowed by damaged bodywork. The Buncombe/Mardenborough Nissan GT-R GT3 was 8th. Finally getting the opportunity to race one of his company's cars was

Aston Martin Racing boss John Gaw, sharing the Cyber Racing - AMR Vantage GT3 with long time co-drive Phil Dryburgh, the pair would finish 12th.The GTC Ferrari 458 Challenge of Gary Eastwood and Ryan Hooker was first non-GT3 car home in 17th, the GT4 class win (and with it the GT4 championship) went to the Team WFR Ginetta G50 of Warren Hughes and Jody Fannin in 18th.A notable retirement after starting from the pit lane was former championship leader David Ashburn.

With only the final round at Donington to go the British GT championship is wide open with the top five being separated by 9.5 points.

ROSS & SALA SHARE MSC SERIES RACE WINS IN SYDNEYTop Kiwi Steve Ross (McRae GM1) and top Aussie Bryan Sala (Matich A50/51) ended up sharing the spoils at the opening round of the 2012/13 MSC NZ F5000 Tasman Cup Revival Series in Sydney over the weekend.

The round was held at the annual Muscle Car Masters meeting at the recently extended and re-named Sydney Motorsport Park (nee Eastern Creek) with former Australian Touring Car and NASCAR driver Sala beating three-time former series champion Ken Smith (Lola T430) and defending champion Steve Ross to pole in qualifying then chasing a fast-starting Ross down on the last lap to win the first race of the weekend on Saturday.

Ross came back strongly on Sunday, however, winning the second race - another 6-lapper - in the morning from compatriots Roger Williams (Lola T332) and Aaron Burson (McRae GM1, and the 10-lap MSC feature in the afternoon from Smith, Sala and 2011/12 season series runner-up Aaron Burson (McRae GM1).Though at just six laps the same length as the first race on Saturday, the second on Sunday took a heavy toll on equipment with nine dnfs, amongst them race one winner Sala, who pulled in when a rocker cover gasket burst and dipped oil onto his car;s left hand exhaust bank, Smith, who was a late retirement with a sticking throttle, and Jay Bondini,

Russell Greer and Chris Lambden with broken input or half shafts.Sala ran second for two laps before pitting to find the source of the smoke, elevating Roger Williams to second, Aaron Burson to third and the best of the Australians, Darcy Russell (Lola T330), to fourth.Behind Russell, David Abbott (Lola T430) moved into fifth and Bill Hemmings (Elfin MR8) and David Banks (Talon MR1A) engaged in a spirited battle for sixth, eventually resolved in the local man (Hemmings') favour.

Between races most of the issues which affected the cars in the second race were fixed and a full field again faced the starter for the 10-lap feature final in the afternoon.A highlight of this race was the come-from-behind charges put in by drivers like Sala and Smith who because they failed to finish the second race started the third well down the grid .Ross got his customary flier off the rolling start with Roger Williams tucking into second place for the first two laps before being forced to pull off the track with a diff problem. Between Sunday's two races one of the F5000 category's original heroes, Australian Warwick Brown, was re-united with one of the last cars he drove in the era, the Lola T333CS now owned and driven by Christchurch MSC series stalwart Stan Redmond.Brown and Ken Smith were invited to join the 'Legends' demo, Brown in the Redmond car, Smith in the sister car to the one he usually drives, the other ex Warwick Brown car at the meeting, the Lola T430 now owned and driven by David Abbott.

car ended up was deemed dangerous so the Safety Car was dispatched while it was retrieved, bunching the field up and setting the scene for a tightly contested run to the flag. With Williams out Bryan Sala, who has already worked his way back up the running order to fifth at the end of the first lap and third in the second, found himself in second place with Ken Smith following him through into third - where he stayed until a last lap move on Sala gave him second!Behind Sala, meanwhile, Aaron Burson ran a lonely race for fourth from Darcy Russell, Chris Lambden, Russell Greer (Lola T332), David Abbott, David Banks - who this time got the better of Race 2 rival Bill Hemmings despite being back in 14th place at the end of the first lap - with Shayne Windelburn and Stan Redmond 11th and 12th respectively.

With a long-standing invitation to compete at the big Muscle Car Masters meeting prompting an earlier-than-usual start to the annual MSC F5000 series this year there is now a break until the second round back in New Zealand at the end of October (at the Lady Wigram Trophy meeting at Powerbuilt Tools Raceway in Christchurch) before a return to Sydney Motorsport Park for some of the series regulars for a non-championship round at Australia's own Tasman Revival Series meeting at the end of November. The points rounds then resume back in New Zealand at the two NZ Festival of Motor Racing - celebrating Denny Hulme meeting at Hampton Downs in January before returning to the South Island for the penultimate series round at the annual Skope Classic meeting in Christchurch and final at the Classic Speedfest meeting at Invercargill's Teretonga Park in February. The MSC F5000 Tasman Cup Revival Series is organised and run with the support of sponsors MSC, NZ Express Transport, Bonney's Specialized Bulk Transport, Mobil Lubricants, Pacifica, Smith & Davies, Avon Tyres and Exide. Super Saloon/Modsports Donington 15th SeptemberBy Mick Herring.

Following a popular win in the previous CSCC Super Saloon/Modsports race at Silverstone, Joe Ward in Vauxhall Baby Bertha took pole position at Donington on Saturday. See August 2011 issue of www.classicandcompetitioncar.com for my impressions of Baby Bertha from the passenger seat.Joe stamped his and Baby Bertha's authority on the race until being overcome by Joss Ronchetti's Sunbeam Lotus Bullet and Peter Steven's Vauxhall Carlton TS 6000 (also an ex-works car).Baby Bertha settled into third place and, without the pressures of close pursuers, set

fastest lap at an average of 94.12mph on the 7th tour, remaining poised to regain either of the positions ahead, with three abreast into the Esses. However, Baby Bertha's race came to an abrupt end just two laps later as Joe slowed for the Fogarty Esses, finding what he later described as "a box full of neutrals" and the resultant need to brake even harder caused Baby Bertha to first veer left and then spin right, across the grass before hitting, at speed, the side of Lotus Bullet as it negotiated the Esses.

Both cars were eliminated on the spot, the race red flagged, and I was not alone at being sad to see such an iconic historic car as Baby Bertha damaged together with the Lotus Bullet. As a result of the red flagged race, the win went to Peter Stevens Vauxhall Carlton by 51.5 secs from Ron Harper's Triumph Spitfire with 2 litre Honda engine, Neil Claxton's Suzuki SC100 1300 3rd.The remaining three places were taken by Phil Gale Darrian T9, Martin Baker Hillman Imp Spaceframe 1040 and David Beatty's Honda Prelude.

HVRA and Deutsche Marque Donington 15th September By Mick HerringBernie's HVRA V8 Challenge, the brainchild of experienced Chevrolet Corvette racer Bernie Chodosh, is a series of races designed to celebrate anything and everything that encompasses that perfect engine configuration that has served our American (and the rest of the

world) friends for so long. The first forty minute, two driver, pit stop race on Saturday would be combined with the CSCC's Deutsche Marque category so it would be interesting to see if the modern German cars could keep pace with the older V8 machines or vice-versa.Protagonists of that certain engine note need not have worried as the older, mostly much modified V8 machines took the first three places away from the more modern German interlopers.Winning the race were the welcome visitors from Ireland, namely Jackie Cochran and Jonathan Fildes with their immaculate Sunbeam Tiger.

Jackie Cochran took the first stint and enjoyed a first half battle with the well known, solo driven, MGB GT V8 of John Wilson, the two trading places on a regular basis before Cochran handed over to former Renault Clio driver Fildes, who resumed the battle with

Wilson.Despite a spin which dropped him temporarily to 2nd, the Tiger took a convincing win by 13.8secs over the big red MG.In third was the series founder, taking over his silver and flame-painted Chevrolet Corvette from Mark Wright, who delighted in leaving thick black lines exiting Donington's Fogarty Esses on many laps. There was a second race to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the Lotus Elan held at Donington Park. Two thirds of the entry from Brands Hatch for the first race made the trip North to Donington for the 30 minute race held on the 16th September. The race was won by Nelson Rowe from Mark Halstead both driving FIA specification Elans.

Sunday's race would see the remaining Super Saloons/Modsports combining with the HVRA V8 Challenge to run as two concurrent rolling-start races, separated by half a lap.The V8s started first behind their own safety car and it would be interesting to witness how much ground the Saloon/modsports cars would make up during the twenty minute race given their half-lap starting deficit. What we were treated to was a superb demonstration of fast precision driving by Jonathan Fildes in the highly modified Sunbeam Tiger that no-one was ever going

to usurp. The young Irishman was able to lap all but the two cars behind him and backed off for a while in the closing stages of the race to win by 42.8secs, setting fastest time on lap three before encountering any traffic. Those two cars being the Chevrolet Corvette driven again by Mark Wright and Peter Stevens' Vauxhall Carlton Super Saloon which crossed the line 53.6secs behind the Tiger, taking fastest class lap.Martin Lofthouse's HVRA Triumph TR7 V8 was 4th with Ron Harper's Modsports Triumph Spitfire Honda in 5th Simon James Modified  Sunbeam Tiger 7th in the combined race

Car Fest North, Cholmondely Castle - 8th-9th September 2012. By Simon & Janet WrightWhere else could you see a Hesketh Grand Prix car and a motorised double bed race down the same course? CarFest was the brain child of Radio and TV personality Chris Evans. The first event, CarFest South was held over the August Bank Holiday weekend at Laverstoke Park Farm, home of ex Formula 1 World Champion Jody Scheckter. It was a great success, with a sell out crowd of 20,000 all helping to raise money for the Children in Need Charity. He had come up with the idea only 5 months before, as he thought about his perfect weekend, incorporating cars, music and food. For his trip up North, Cholmondeley Castle was chosen after the success of their Pageant of Power event earlier in the year. The size of the display site also allowed more than 20,000 people to attend and part of the Pageant of Power course was utilised so that the fans could see many of the cars in action. A major coupe for the event was the attendance of 2003 Norwegian World Rally Champion Petter Solberg who made some spectacular runs along the track, performing many high speed spins, donuts and driving the car while standing outside the open door! The sprint event had the ‘competition’ classes split into what Chris Evans called his Magnificent Sevens. Each class contained seven cars. The first

class was Chris’ Magnificent Seven containing seven Ferrari’s - a 1961 Ferrari TR61, a 1963 Ferrari 250 GT SWB, a 1966 Ferrari 275 GTB /4 Cam, a 1985 Ferrari 288 GTO, a 1988 Ferrari F40, a 2001 Ferrari 550 Barchetta and a 2011 Ferrari SA Aperta. Each seven was an impressive selection of automotive history or exotica and the paddock contained millions of pounds worth of cars. In fact one of the seven groups was the Million Pound Seven where each car was valued at over one million pounds - an Aston Martin One 77, a Bugatti Veyron, A Ferrari Enzo, a Koenigsegg Agera, a Maserati 250 SI, a Maserati MC12 and a Pagani Zonda F Clubsport Roadster. Other Sevens included Seven Anniversaries, Supercar Seven, Motorsport Seven, Unusual Seven, Historic F1 seven, Group B seven, Seven design classics, Vintage seven, gorgeous seven and the Nick Mason Seven.A large area of the Castle grounds was given over for car clubs to display members vehicles as well as various Trade displays of brand new cars. was a good turn out from local car clubs which included a nice line up of iconic DeLorean DMC-12 cars with their distinctive stainless steel bodies glinting in the sunshine. There was also a nice selection of Audi cars including a Quattro Rally car. A wide range of Lotus models were on display in the club area alongside some beautiful Elan models to celebrate its 50th anniversary. The event proved to be a great success with over 25,000 people attending over the weekend, and CarFest is well on its way to raising £800,000 for BBC

Children in Need. Chris Evans was present on both days, driving the course in several different cars, signing autographs and posing for photos with the crowds and introducing some of the big name pop stars who were performing on stage during the event. These included Texas, Paloma Faith and the Proclaimers plus many others. Evans delighted the crowd by getting behind the wheel of his iconic Chitty Chitty Bang Bang to kick off the action on both days.

Pink Floyd drummer Nick Mason, a regular on the Historic racing scene, brought 7 of his racing cars to take part in the event and

had great fun driving his Ferrari 512S which had starred in the film Le Mans along side actor Steve McQueen.Lord Cholmondeley was delighted to host the event and joined the thousands of party goers to enjoy the event. "It was both an honour and a delight for us to host CarFest North on behalf of Chris Evans here at Cholmondeley Castle,” he said. “CarFest was a truly wonderful weekend packed with first class family entertainment. Wherever you looked there were thousands of happy faces and it was particularly pleasing to see so many children of all ages really enjoying the estate. Through the annual Pageant of Power, Cholmondeley is

already firmly established on the motor sport map; now the huge success of CarFest North has not only added another string to our bow but also enabled us to play our part in helping Chris to raise significant funds for BBC Children in Need."

750 Motor Club Summer Festival meeting Donington park 1-2nd SeptemberBy Simon & Janet Wright with additional photos by Mick Herring.

The 750 Motor Club is one of Britain's oldest and strongest car clubs and is now based at Donington Park, so its Summer Festival meeting at the beginning of September was a home meeting to celebrate the 90th birthday of the Austin 7. The two day meeting covered 13 of the clubs racing series which cover single seaters, sports cars, hatchbacks and saloons. We have included a photo gallery from this event and hope to get a flavour of the diversity and close racing that this club brings to the track. The Stock Hatch championship race was a particularly close fought affair, with

the majority of the field driving the Citroen Saxo VTR. Some contact was made, especially at the chicane and Sunday race winner Jake Farndon was only 1.27 seconds ahead at the chequred flag from Tom Bell and Joe Ferguson was only 0.2 of a second behind in third.
