Classic Bike Ramblings"Italians"..........."First's"..........and "Simple Men" Evenuslegendshavedreamsanddesires,thingswewanttodobuthavenot,ourveryown"firsts”,thingswestillwanttoinvent,thingswewanttolearnandeventstoobserveandasIlookedupintheskyandsawthatbigsilverairplaneflyingbyIthoughttomyselfhowitmusthavefelttobethefirstpersontofly,totakethatfirstflightortoevenhaveobservedthefirstflight,whatamemorytheyhad.WhatImeantosaymygoodfriendsisthatweallremembersomeofourveryownfirsts.Thefirstkiss,thefirstmotorcy-clewerode,ourfirstconcertandyourfirstlove,thefirst
timewewatchedmenwalkonthemoon.Butasweallknowsomeofour"firsts"arenot
sogood,someinwarremembertheirfirstnearmissorthefirst"hit"orourfirstvisittothedentist,andsome"firsts"canbe
deadlysuchasthefirsttimeyourunoutoffuelinanairplane. Wealsotendtorememberourfirstsof
technologyofanyera,ourfirstCDplayer,ourfirstfuelinjectedride,thatfirstamazingstopwithdiscbrakesorforsomewhenpropellersgavewaytojets.Andit'sinterest-ingthatmycollectingandinfatuationwithacertainbrandofmotorcycleshastodowithsomeamazingfirstsandofairplanes. MotoGuzzijustthenameevokesaloreandmys-tiqueevenfrompeoplethatonlyknowaminimalamountaboutmotorcycles.ManytimesIhear"LookatthatMotoGuzzi"or"Wow,anoldGuzzi".Butthere'salwaysbeenaromanticismthisbikeevokesmoresothansomanyothers,asmanyItalianthingstendtodo.Andit'sacompanythathashungontobecometheoldestEuropeanmotorcyclemanufacturerintheworld.It’splayedahugeandvitalroleinItaly’s'placeinhistoryasaleaderinfineracingandtour-ingmotorcyclesoftodaywithanamazingarrayoffirsts.MotoGuzziwasstartedbytwoairplanepilotsandtheirme-chanicwhohadallservedtogetherintheItalianAirCorpsduringWorldWarI.ThreemenwhowereassignedtothesameaerosquadronnearVenicewouldallhavethesamedreamafterthewarsend.CarloGuzzi,GiovanniRavelliandGiorgioParodi,wouldformG.P.(Guzzi-Parodi)butthenamewouldonlybeaffixedtothefirstfewbikes.ThenamewouldbechangedtoMotoGuzzi.CarloGuzziwouldengineerandinnovateandParodiwhocamefromaverywealthyship-pingfamilywouldfinanceandhandleaffairsofthecom-panyandRavelliwhowasalreadyaworldrenownedpilotandmotorcycleracerwouldputthemonthemapthroughracing,butalasaswithmanydreamstheydon'tallcometrue.RavelliwouldbekilledinanairplanecrashjustdaysafterthewarendedandGuzziandParodiwouldcommem-eratetheirfriendsvisionanddreaminthecompanywiththeEagleWingsthatformtheMotoGuzzilogoeventoday.Guzziwouldbeformedthroughincorporationthatwasle-gallybasedinGenoa,ItalyonMarch15th.1921althoughitsheadquarterswouldbelocatedelsewhere.Sinceitsbegin-ningin1921GuzzishomehasbeenlocatedonabranchofLakeComoinMandellodelLario.Todayitisamazeofmultistorybuildingsencompassing580,000squarefeetand
building10,000motorcyclesayear.AlsointhiscomplexistherenownedMotoGuzzimuseum,thehistoricwindtunnelandtheirvastlibrary.Carlos'brotherGiuseppewouldbeonthegroundbreakingGT"Norge"duringthe1928ArticCircleride.StanleyWoodswouldhelpcapturecountlessIsleofManTTwinsforthemarqueandBillLomaswouldwinthe55and56350ccWorldChampi-onshipsdefeatingahugefieldofmulticylinderbikesonhiswindtunnelfairedsinglecylinderGuzzi.
ManyothernamesandmotorcyclesgracethemuseuminMandellothatbroughtsomanyvictoriesandfirststoacompanyformedbyaviatorswhohadadreamofbuildingtheirfirstmotorcycletogether,andIfeelveryfortunatetobethecaretakerofafewofthem. ItwasattheRideforKidseventatQuakerSteakandLubeIwashavinganindepthconversa-
tionwithmyfriendRadicalRandyastowhetherthegirlintheshortmini-skirtwashotterthanthechickintheshort-shorts,whenRuthieafriendofoursaskedwhyIhadamirrorundermy1946MotoGuzziSuperalce?AndwiththatIexplainedtoherthatMotoGuzziin1928designedandbuilttheveryfirstswingarmsuspension,anideathatallmodernmotorcyclesofanyflavorhavecopied.In1928trav-elinglongdistancesonamotorcyclewasnearimpossibleasanysuspensionthatofferedcomfortofthateracompro-misedhandlingtothepointofdanger.CarloGuzziandhisbrotherGiuseppedesignedanelasticframeusingasteelboxmountedunderthehorizontalsinglecylinderhead.Itcontained4springstogetherwithaswingarmintubesandjoinedbysheetmetal.TheGranTurismo(GT)"Norge"wouldbethefirstbiketoreceivethissuspensionandinanefforttogainpublicityandtotestandprovethisdesignthebrotherswouldgoonachallenging4000mileridefromMandellodelLariototheArcticCircleinNorthernCapeNord,Norway.Nowdon'tforgetmypurveyorsofhistorythiswas1928andthecondi-

Classic Bike Ramblings tionsofEurope’s'roadswerejustabovethatofdonkeytrails,andourfearlessriderGiuseppeGuzziwouldmakeitinfourweeks.SowiththatmyfriendsMotoGuzzicouldclaimthatitinventedthefirstmodernrearswingarmsuspensionandtransformedthemotorcycleintoaneverydaymodeoftranspor-tationthatitistoday,askthatguyonahardtailhow"itusetobe"?MotoGuzziwoulddesignthefirstproto-typeshaftdrive;althoughitwouldbeBMWtofirstputitinproduction.Firstlinkedbrakes,firstcartridgeforks,first
motorcyclewithacenterstand(1921"Normale"),firstmotorcyclemanufacturertouseAGMbatteriesandthefirsttruck-motorcyclehybridthe"Ercole"madein1928andcapableofcarrying800lbs.Firstlargewheelscooterever,thereweresomanyotherfirststhrough
thecompanieshistoryitcouldfillseveralpages. Theyearwouldbe1950whenGuzziwhoseheartandsoulweretrulymadeupof"airplaneminds"wouldbuildthefirstmotorcyclewindtunnelcapableoftestingfullsizeprototypes,andthiswouldallowthemtomarket
theworld’sfirstintegralfairing.Italsoallowedthemtorefineandobservetheairstreamsaroundthebike,reducefrontalareaandfriction,optimize
airdragandgetbetterfueleconomyandthiswouldleadtooneofGuzzis'greatestachieve-mentsandsomesayitsfirstfolly.TheMotoGuzziGrandPrixDOHCV8in1955itusedtheveryfirstdualoverheadcamV-8motor-cycleengine.Itwasanamazing500ccV8racingmachinewithtwovalvespercylinderitputout80HPat12,000RPM,about20percentmorethatitsmaincompetitortheMVAugustaandGileraV-4's.(Ducatiwouldnotbebuilding"largecc"motorcyclesyet)TheV8Guzzihitover172MPHanditwouldbeover30yearsbeforethatspeedwouldeverbeseenagainontheGrandPrixRacingCircuit.Itssoundwasamazingwhenitran,butthe"OttoCilindri"wascomplexandexpensivetobuild,verydifficulttorideandcontrolatspeedandby1957withthetwobikesavail-ablenoonewouldridethemanddevelopmentwassoonfocusedonits90degreetransverseveetwinthatwouldstartthecompany’s'secondchapter. 1967wouldbecomeknownastheSIEMMyearsGuzzi wouldbeundergovernmentcontrolforthenext6years.ThenewtransverseveetwinwouldbedesignedbythesamemanthatcameupwiththemythicalV8GrandPrixRacer.Itbeganlifeasa700cc45HPengineinanef-forttowintheItaliangovernmentscompetitionforanewpolicemotorcycle,whichitwonandtheGuzziAmbas-sador750andEldorado850wentonformanyyearstobeastapleofmanyofAmericas'policeforcessuchasLAPD,DallasandAtlantatonameafew.Thebasicoriginal1967enginehasbeendevelopedandupgradedtothe1200ccengineofferedtoday.Guzziwouldbebroughtfromstate
controlbyAlejandrodeTo-masowhowasfamousforbuildingsportsandluxurycars.Hegotitinapack-agedealwithMaseratiandBenelli.Inthe27yearperiodDeTomasoownedthecompany(73-2000)the850lemans,theV35/V65/V75/andmanygroundbreakingbikeswouldbebuilt.ItwouldbeintheseyearsthatGuzziwouldhitmanyotherfirsts.The71HP"Convert"builtbetween1975and1982wouldbeone.This110
MphtransverseVeetwinwouldusea2speedSachstorqueconverterthatwouldmakeitthefirstproductionauto-maticmotorcycle,arrivingonthemarketbeforetheHonda750or400automaticsandtheSuzuki450auto.Theyear2000wouldfindmotorcyclebuilderApriliabuyingGuzzifor65milliondollars,butaboutthesametimethatthesetwomotorcyclecompaniesweremergingtheR&Dracingprogramsandtheirtechnology,ItalywouldmakeNationallawsrequiringhelmetsformotorcyclistsandhugeinsur-anceratesforteenageriders. EvenintheseslowsalesyearsApriliawouldreno-
vateandupgradetheGuzzifacilityandturneddownanoffertobuythestrugglingenterprisefromDucatiMotorHoldings.Butintheyear2004PiaggiowouldbuyApriliatherebyacquiringMotoGuzziandwouldbecomeEurope’slargestmotorcyclemanufacturer. Inkeepingwithhowairplaneshaveinteractedandaffectedmo-torcycling,mostlythroughamazinginnovationsandtheR&Dthatavia-torshavebroughttousfromtheirindustryorsometimesviceversa,Air-planesand"firsts"wouldalsoaffectusinotherways.IwasatPlantCityBikeNighttalkingtoafriendofmineScottandIwouldheartheband,averytalentedduogoesintothefirstnotesof"SimpleMan".Ihadjustenteredhighschool,theworldofgirls,surfing,dirtbikesandtheawesomeKZ650,andinHighSchoolIwouldbegintofirstlis-tentothemusicthathasbecomeabikeeventstapleandsouthernbikersfavorite,andthatwouldbethemusicofLynyrdSkynyrd. Thebandwouldbeformedinthe1960'swhenfivefriends
RonnieVanZant,GaryRossington,AllenCollins,LeonWilkesonandBobBurns(whowouldbereplacedbyAr-timisPylein1974)wouldplayasthegroup"MyBackyard"atRobertE.LeeHighSchoolinJacksonville,Fla.In1969theirnamewouldbecome"LeonardSkinnerd"inajabattheirgymteacherCoachLeonardSkinner.BillyPowellwhohadbecomea"roadie"forthebandin1970wouldbetheirkeyboardplayertwoyearslaterwhen,tothebandsamaze-menthewouldsitdownatapianohewasmovingandplaywhatwouldturnouttobetheintrototheepicsongFreebird.Itwouldbe1972whentheproducerofBlood,SweatandTearswouldhavethemchangethespellingtoLynyrdSkynyrdandsignthemtoMCArecords,theirfirstalbumwasselftitledandcontained"Freebird,SimpleManandTuesdaysGone"amongothers.Thegroupenjoyedbig-

gersuccesseveryyearperformingatthebiggestshowsandare-nasworldwide.OnOct.17th.1977theywouldreleaseStreetSurvivorswhichimmediatelysold500,000copiesandwouldpropelthemtobecomingpossiblyAmerica’sbiggestband.Theirtourtopromotethisalbumwouldbetheirlargestever.StartinginMiamionOct.15th.Itwouldend32stopslaterwithadoubleshowinHonoluluonFeb.1st.1978.It’salwaystothisdaybeenaninterestingsidenotethatthecoverofthisepicalbumwouldhavethebandsurroundedbyfireandinsidewouldbeanorderformforaLynyrdSkynyrd
"survivalkit". Well,my78loyalfansofSouthernRockwhatdoesabandneedtoaccomplishsuchanamazingtour,to
movemanagement,roadies,andfriendsfromcitytocity?Yes,yougotit,anairplane.Theairplanechosenwasa1948Convair240thethirdonebuilt
ofthatmodel.ItwasdeliveredtoWesternAirlinesonDec.30th.1948andregisteredNC8401H.Aftergoingthroughafewownersandracking
up29,000flighthoursitwaspurchasedbytheL&JCompanyofAddisonTexasandregisteredN55VM.ItsalsodocumentedthatthisveryplanehadbeeninspectedbyAerosmithsflightcrewforuseintheirearlysummertourof1977.InfactSteveTylerandJoePerryreallylobbiedforthisveryplane,butitwasfeltthatneithertheplanenorcrewwereuptostandards.InaninterviewZunkBukerAerosmithsassistantchiefofflightoperationsatthetimerecallsseeingthepilots,34yearoldWalterMcCrearyand32yearoldWilliamGrayJr.bothem-ployeesofFalconAviationtradingabottleofJackDanielsbackandforthwhileBukerandcrewwereinspectingtheplane.ItwouldbeontheflightfromLakelandFl.toGreensville,S.C.thatasoundtechwouldseeasixfootflameshootingoutoftherightside1200HpPrattWhitneyR-2800engine. ItwasdecidedthatthebandwouldgetridofthisplanewhenitreachedtheconcertinBatonRougeattheLouisianaUni-versitySchoolscheduledfortheFridaynightOct21st1977.CassieGaines(Steve’soldersisterandbackupsinger)hadwantedtoridetothisnextgigintheequipmenttruck,butshewastalkedoutofit.TheplanewoulddepartGreenvilleDowntownAirportaround4PM(ET)onOct.20th.1977enroutetoRyanAirportinBatonRougeLA.TheConvair240wouldcontain2pilotsand24passengers.Itwouldbearoutineflightrouteusinginstrumentflightrulesandradio
navigation.Thepilotwouldrequestanaltitudeof12,000feet
andanestimatedflighttimeoftwohoursand43minutes.Theairplanewasthoughttohave5hoursoffuelonboardandclearandcalmweatherwasexpectedfortheentireroute.Wellmyinterestedfriendsitwouldbearound6:42
PM(ET)whenHoustoncenterwouldbecontactedbyoneofthepilots."Yessirweneedtogettoanairport,theclosetairportyou'vegotsir".Houstonaskediftheyweredeclaringanemergency,towhichthepilotsreplywas“Yessir,wearelowonfuelandjustaboutoutofit,wewantvec-torstoMcComb".Theywereadvisedtoturntoaheadingof250degreesandthentheConvair240pilotsaid“WearenotdeclaringanemergencybutwedoneedtogetclosetoMcCombsasstraightandgoodaswecangetsir,posthastesir!"60sec-ondslaterthecrewof"AirSkynyrd"wouldcallHoustonaircontrolwiththistransmission."55VictorMikeweareoutoffuel".Thetowerreplied"Roger,understandyouareoutoffuel?"ThepilotofN55VMreplied“I’msorry,it’sjustanindicationofit"butwithnofurtherexplanationtoaveryconfusedHoustontower.Aircontrollerswouldasktheflightspresentaltitudeandwouldreceive"Weareatfourpointfive"andthatmysadfriendswerethelastcon-versationbetweenLynyrdSkynyrdsConvair240andHoustonaircontrol.Afewminuteslaterthesoundofanemergencylocationtransmitter
couldbeheardbylocalaircraft.Itwouldbebroadcastingfromaremote,woodedandswampyareafivemilesoutsideGilsburg,Mississippiandformygeneration,inmycircleoffriendsitwastruly"Thedaythemusicdied"foryousee;myfirstrealconcertwasonOct.16th.1977attheBayfrontCenterinSt.PetersburgwhereIsawLynyrdSkynyrdplay.Fournightslatertheywouldbegone."StreetSurvivors"
wouldbereleasedOct.17th.AndthenextdaytheywouldplayLakelandCivicCenterastheirsecondtolastshowonOct.18th. LeadsingerRonnieVanZant,guitarist/vocalist,SteveGaines,backingvocalist,CassieGaines,ass'troadmanager,DeanKilpat-rickandpilotWalterMcCrearyandco-pilotWilliamGrayJr.wereallkilledonimpact.Guitar-istAllenCollinshadtwocrackedvertebraeinhisneckandbothheandbassplayerLeonWilkesonnearlyhadarmsamputatedasaresultofthecrash,inadditionLeonhadsevereinternalinjuries,apunc-turedlungandmostofhisteethknockedout.BillyPowellwouldfindhisnosebarelyattachedtohisfaceandleglacerations.GuitaristGaryRossingtonbrokebothofhisarms,hisrightlegandpelvisalong

withapuncturedstomachandliver.DrummerArtimusPylecrawledoutofthewreckagewith"severalribsstickingout"ofhimalongwithtworoadcrewmembers;theywouldhikethroughtheswampywoodsandflagdownJohnnyMotethefarmerofthelandadjoiningthecrashsite.Thethickswamphinderedrescueoperationsanda20footwidewaistdeepcreekneededtobecrossedtogettothesurvivors.ThreehelicoptersfromtheCoastGuard(NewOrleans),NationalGuardandForestCountyHos-pitalwouldbethemost
help,twobulldozerswereusedlatertocutaroughroadtothewreckagefromanearbystatehighway. Therewouldbe20survivorsand6fatalities.Fol-lowingthecrashStreetSurvivorswouldbecomethe
bandssecondplatinumalbum.Theoriginalcoversleeveforthealbum(thebandengulfedinflames)wouldbesubstitutedwithasimilarimageofthebandagainstablackbackground.LynyrdSkynyrddisbandedafterthis.AndasofthiswritingArtimisPyleandGary
Rossingtonaretheonlytwoleftofthe"precrashSkynyrd"stillonearthCollins/WilkesonandPowellaregone.PowellwouldplaykeyboardsonKidRocks2007hit"AllSummerLong"whichused"SweetHomeAlabama"asits
structure.Itwastherightenginemag-neto(itprovidessparkandtimingtotheengine)thatseemedtobetheprimarycauseofourrocknroll-erscrash,anditsinterestingtonotethatthepilotshadintendedtoreplacethissmallpowergeneratorinBatonRougebutthatwouldnothavematteredasthebandhadalreadydecidedthenightbeforethatthey
wouldbuytheir"first"LearJetandanewtourbus.Theyhadahugealbumandwereontheirbiggestnationalheadliningtouroftheirlives,sowhynot?Itseemsthemalfunctioningmagnetofooledthepilotsintomakinganexceptionallyrichair/fuelmixturecausingthemtoburn25gals.Anhourmorefuel(theConvair240burned183gal.perhournormally)thiswascompoundedbymiscalculatingthefuelloadatpreviousstops,basicallycausingN55VMtoliterallyrunoutofgas.Somesaidthepilotspanickedanddumpedthefuel.Somesaytheyhadbeenupallnightsnortingcocaineandsomesaytheyhadabadfuelgaugeanddidnotmanuallycheckthefueltanks(thiscouldbeabigpartofit)buttheofficialaccidentreportsaid"TheNationalTransportationandSafetyBoarddeterminedtheprobablecauseoftheaccidentwasfuelexhaustionandtotallossofpowerfrombothenginesduetocrewinattentiontofuelsupplycontributingtothefuelexhaustionwereinadequateflightplanning
andanenginemalfunctionofundeterminednatureintherightenginewhichresultedin"torching"andhigherthannormalfuelconsumption."Thereshouldhavebeen240
gallonsoffuelintheplaneatimpact,NTSBinvestigatorsrecovered1quart. Duetothislackoffueltherewasnofireastheplanerippedapartonimpactandthatsavedmosteveryoneonboard,anddidnotplayatthepropheticcoverof"StreetSurvivors".Bothpilotsautopsiesfoundthemtobecleanfordrugsandalcoholandtheplanewasfoundtohavenodefects,eventherightmagnetoappearedtofunctionproperly...Sogo
outnowmyfriendsandmakesomefirstsofyourown.Singyourfirstkaraokesong,makeyourfirsttriptothegym,goonyourfirstmotorcycleride(mymomdidat78)orgoyourfirstdaywithoutacigarette,itsnev-ertoolatetostarthaving"firsts"Ialsohighlyrec-ommendthatyouremembersomefirstsofyourpastyoumayfindoutyourabiggerdealthanyouthought.Andifyouhappentoberidingyourmo-torcycleandseeanairplaneflyingabove,rememberhowmuchwesharewithourbrothersinflight.Wemygoodreadersarethesumofsomanyfirsts,arewenot?
