Erlin Bak Erlin O. Bak, 78, of Irene passed away January 25, 2015 at his residence in Irene. Funeral services will be 1:30 p.m. Thursday, Jan- uary 29, 2015 at Calvary Lutheran Church in Irene with Pas- tor Mark Os- trem officiating. Burial will follow in Hillcrest Cemetery at Irene. He attended Irene School com- pleting 8th Grade. Erlin began working with his dad at Oliver Bak Service, until join- ing the U.S. Army where he was stationed in Chicago. After his military service Erlin married Carol Jean Pe- terson on June 16, 1957 in Vi- borg, SD. They resided in Irene for the past 57 years. Erlin spent his working years at Irene Standard as a co- owner, Irene Public School as a janitor/bus driver and the United States Post Office as a rural letter carrier until retir- ing. Erlin was an active mem- ber of Calvary Lutheran Church and also a member of Hall Thompson American Le- gion Post 193. Erlin enjoyed fishing, hunting, woodwork- ing, camping and also spend- ing time with his family. Erlin is survived by his wife Carol of Irene, daughter Teresa (Dan) Rempp of Irene, son Doug of Vermillion, two sisters Leone (Bruce) Brock- mueller of Irene, Kathleen (John) Holloman of Brook- ings, SD, four grandchildren; Chris Rempp and special friend (Sherry Vaudry), Nicholas Rempp and fiancé Katey Hansen, Linda (Eric) Hardy and Derek Bak, also one great-grandson Zander Hardy. Anna was born on Septem- ber 26, 1924, to Lucian and Christine (Madsen) Woodbury at Centerville, South Dakota. She grew up in the Centerville area and graduated from Cen- terville High School in 1942. She worked for Northwester Bell Telephone Company fol- lowing graduation. On Novem- ber 1, 1946, she married Wilfred Allen Doty and settled in Wakonda, South Dakota. She worked at the Wakonda Creamery until beginning her career as a dental assistant and officer manager for Dr. Willard Powell in Vermillion. Anna retired in 1986 and moved to Garretson in 1997 to be closer to her daughter. Anna was a member of the United Church of Christ in Wakonda and later the United Church of Garretson. She was a lifetime member of the American Legion Auxiliary and was active in the South Dakota Dental Assistant’s Association. She enjoyed croqueting, play- ing cards, golfing, and attend- ing her grandchildren’s sporting events. Mike was born on a farm near Tabor SD on July 20, 1933 to Mathias and Pauline (Sternhagen) Kubal, and he was baptized at St. Wences- laus Church in Tabor on Au- gust 1, 1933. In 1953, he entered the United States Armed Forces. He served his country dur- ing the Korean War as an Ar- mored Division Specialist and was among the infantry men assigned to defend the hostile area known as the DMZ Zone. He was honor- ably discharged from active duty with a National Defense Service Medal in June of 1955. On June 18, 1957, he mar- ried the love of his life Gladys Walloch, at Saint John’s Catholic Church in Lesterville, SD. They had four children. Judy (Pat) Car- roll of Tabor, SD; Laurie (Mike) Becvar of Rapid City, SD; Nancy (Robert) Pechous of Tabor, SD; and Dan (Jodi) Kubal of Lesterville, SD. Mike’s passion was his work in farming and his fam- ily and friends. He raised cat- tle and crops and at one time; he was endearingly known as the “Oats King” for his ability to grow an excel- lent crop of oats. John Deere was clearly his tractor of choice and to this day, John Deere green continues to dominate the color of equip- ment on the Kubal farms. Mike and Gladys operated a dairy farm for thirty years. Mike Kubal had a strong work ethic and work always came before leisure, but he did take time to have fun, and many memories were made. He enjoyed hunting and fish- ing. Mike and Gladys traveled with friends to Alaska twice and to other scenic areas throughout the country. Mike loved music, especially Czech music; he often played his accordion for family and friends. He loved to dance and play cards, and he enjoyed spending time with his spe- cial dog Shep. Mike will forever be re- membered as a kind, caring, and generous husband, fa- ther, and friend. He was a teacher, a role model, a stew- ard of the land, the rock of the family, a keen intellec- tual, a man of integrity, hon- esty, wit, and humor. He was a visionary, a historian, and a progressive and successful business man. Mike loved and respected the Lord, and the Lord walked with him all the days of his life. Family and friends will miss him dearly. The legacy of Michael Kubal will be carried forward, impact- ing the world, through the lives of his wife, children, grandchildren, and friends. He held lifetime member- ships in the Yankton, SD VFW, and Tabor SD American Legion. He was an active member of St. Wenceslaus Church in Tabor, SD. He is survived by his wife of 57 years, Gladys, his four children named above, and his sister Magdeline Bame of Tyndall, SD. Survivors also include thirteen grandchil- dren and five great grand- children. Don B. Boyd was born with his twin brother on March 5, 1929 in Vermillion, South Dakota to Hugh and Abbie (Aman) Boyd. Both graduated from Yankton High School in 1947 and both served in the United States Air Force from 1948 to 1952. Don began his career with the United States Postal Service in 1952 and retired in 1990. Don was a very active and longtime member of First United Methodist Church in Yankton where he served for many years as the Church Fi- nancial Secretary. For over 60 years Don served the church and local funeral homes as a soloist for many, many funer- als. On August 15, 1959, Don married Kathleen (DeWalt) Mondini whom he always bragged was one of his great- est blessings. Don was very proud to have planned nine class reunions for the YHS class of 1947. Don loved his family and enjoyed golfing, bowling and never turned down a chance to play Pinochle. In 2009, Don was inducted into the SD bowling Hall of Fame (Pio- neer) division. Don began league bowling at 20th Cen- tury Lanes in 1953 and bowled consistently until 2014. In January of 1996, Don reconnected with a high school girlfriend, Shirley (Macy) Berry, of Mitchell, who became a wonderful companion and provided much needed joy and love until her passing in Septem- ber of 2012. Don is survived by his children: Tony (Maria) Boyd of Sioux Falls, South Dakota; Dana (David) Hoxeng of Volin, South Dakota; Cindy (Louie) Johnson of Volin; and Amy (Jeff) Johnson of Yankton; 10 grandchildren; 7 great grand- children; three sisters-in-law: Rene Rainey of Laguna Hills, California; Beverly Boyd of Sioux Falls; and Maxine De- Walt of Rapid City, South Dakota. After teach- ing, she farmed with Everet until 1969. They became dorm parents at USDS unit until closing in 1984. Marion worked for Dan and Rose Asche at the Frosty Shop in Scotland, later leasing on their own until retiring in 1990. She cared for her hus- band after his stroke in 1990 until his death in 2002. Marian is survived by her son, Perry of Olivet, SD. Marian was preceded in death by her parents, Jasper and Mary, her husband, Everet and son, Rick. He graduated Scotland High School in 1943 where he was recognized as an “ideal stu- dent” and served as the band President as well as playing the French horn. On Septem- ber 4, 1948, Paul was united in marriage to Eunice Nelson in Scotland. Agriculture was Paul’s passion and heritage; he took pride in farming the land his ancestors homesteaded. At one point during Paul’s farm- ing career, he and his late son Tom, who farmed with him, received a certificate recog- nizing the Bainbridge farm as a quasquicentennial family farm, or a farm that has been in the family 125 years. He was a DeKalb corn seed dealer and served on the Bon Homme Co. Soil Conservation board for 28 years. His love for the land was recognized by others and resulted in his being the recipient of the WNAX Farmer of the Day Award and the Bon Homme County Conservation District Endowment Award. When not in the fields, Paul was active in the Inde- pendent order of the Odd Fel- lows (IOOF), a global benevolent fraternal service organization, served on the advisory board for he Scot- land Living Center (now known as the Scotland Good Samaritan Society), and held a leadership position in the Scotland Historical Society. He was also very involved with the Presbyterian Church in Scotland and served in many positions throughout the years. Paul was a very easygoing man blessed with a sense of humor. He could be found playing practical jokes on his neighboring farmer friends or bowling team mem- bers, as he bowled at the Recreation Bar and Bowling Alley in Scotland for many years. Paul passed away on Sat- urday, January 24, 2015 at the Good Samaritan Society of Scotland having attained the age of 89 years and 14 days. He is survived and re- membered by his three chil- dren: Bob (Roseann) Bainbridge of Grand Junction, CO, June Bainbridge of Flagstaff, AZ, and Kay (Mike) Smidt of Menno; grandchil- dren: Vanessa Jones, Logan Smidt, and Elisa Bainbridge; and great-grandson Izaac Richards. Mike was born on a farmnear Tabor SD on July 20,1933 to Mathias and Pauline(Sternhagen) Kubal, and hewas baptized at St. Wences-laus Church in Tabor on Au-gust 1, 1933.

In 1953, he entered theUnited States Armed Forces.He served his country dur-ing the Korean War as an Ar-mored Division Specialistand was among the infantrymen assigned to defend thehostile area known as theDMZ Zone. He was honor-ably discharged from activeduty with a National DefenseService Medal in June of1955.

On June 18, 1957, he mar-ried the love of his lifeGladys Walloch, at SaintJohn’s Catholic Church inLesterville, SD. They hadfour children. Judy (Pat) Car-roll of Tabor, SD; Laurie(Mike) Becvar of Rapid City,SD; Nancy (Robert) Pechousof Tabor, SD; and Dan (Jodi)Kubal of Lesterville, SD.

Mike’s passion was hiswork in farming and his fam-ily and friends. He raised cat-tle and crops and at onetime; he was endearinglyknown as the “Oats King” forhis ability to grow an excel-lent crop of oats. John Deerewas clearly his tractor ofchoice and to this day, JohnDeere green continues todominate the color of equip-ment on the Kubal farms.Mike and Gladys operated adairy farm for thirty years.Mike Kubal had a strongwork ethic and work alwayscame before leisure, but hedid take time to have fun,

and manymemorieswere made.He enjoyedhuntingand fish-ing. Mikeand Gladystraveledwithfriends to

Alaska twice and to otherscenic areas throughout thecountry. Mike loved music,especially Czech music; heoften played his accordionfor family and friends. Heloved to dance and playcards, and he enjoyedspending time with his spe-cial dog Shep.

Mike will forever be re-membered as a kind, caring,and generous husband, fa-ther, and friend. He was ateacher, a role model, a stew-ard of the land, the rock ofthe family, a keen intellec-tual, a man of integrity, hon-esty, wit, and humor. He wasa visionary, a historian, anda progressive and successfulbusiness man.

Mike loved and respectedthe Lord, and the Lordwalked with him all the daysof his life. Family and friendswill miss him dearly. Thelegacy of Michael Kubal willbe carried forward, impact-ing the world, through thelives of his wife, children,grandchildren, and friends.

He held lifetime member-ships in the Yankton, SDVFW, and Tabor SD AmericanLegion. He was an activemember of St. WenceslausChurch in Tabor, SD.

He is survived by his wifeof 57 years, Gladys, his fourchildren named above, andhis sister Magdeline Bame ofTyndall, SD. Survivors alsoinclude thirteen grandchil-dren and five great grand-children. Grandchildren:Travis Dangel, Nathan Bec-var, Justin, Kyle and JenniferPechous, Dana, Elizabeth,Kohl, John, and Kaleb Kubal,Sara Carroll, and Sydney andBrock Goeden. Great Grand-children: Mason Wozniak,Gracie and Georja Pechous,and Blake and Olivia Pec-hous.

Don B. Boyd was bornwith his twin brother onMarch 5, 1929 in Vermillion,South Dakota to Hugh andAbbie (Aman) Boyd. Bothgraduated from Yankton HighSchool in 1947 and bothserved in the United StatesAir Force from 1948 to 1952.Don began his career with theUnited States Postal Servicein 1952 and retired in 1990.Don was a very active andlongtime member of FirstUnited Methodist Church inYankton where he served formany years as the Church Fi-nancial Secretary. For over 60years Don served the churchand local funeral homes as a

soloist for many, many funer-als. On August 15, 1959, Donmarried Kathleen (DeWalt)Mondini whom he alwaysbragged was one of his great-est blessings. Don was veryproud to have planned nineclass reunions for the YHSclass of 1947.

Don loved his family andenjoyed golfing, bowling andnever turned down a chanceto play Pinochle. In 2009, Donwas inducted into the SDbowling Hall of Fame (Pio-neer) division. Don beganleague bowling at 20th Cen-tury Lanes in 1953 andbowled consistently until2014. In January of 1996, Donreconnected with a highschool girlfriend, Shirley(Macy) Berry, of Mitchell,who became a wonderfulcompanion and providedmuch needed joy and loveuntil her passing in Septem-ber of 2012.

Don is survived by hischildren: Tony (Maria) Boydof Sioux Falls, South Dakota;Dana (David) Hoxeng of Volin,South Dakota; Cindy (Louie)Johnson of Volin; and Amy

(Jeff) Johnson of Yankton; 10grandchildren; 7 great grand-children; three sisters-in-law:Rene Rainey of Laguna Hills,California; Beverly Boyd ofSioux Falls; and Maxine De-Walt of Rapid City, SouthDakota. He is also survivedby many nieces and nephews.

and graduated from OlivetHigh School in 1943. Marianwent to Southern StateTeachers College (USDS) andYankton College where shereceived her teacher’s certifi-cate. She married Everet Cay-lor on June 3, 1947 and theymade their home in ruralOlivet. She taught school atTschetter Colony, KehrerSchool District and MannSchool District. After teach-ing, she farmed with Everetuntil 1969. They becamedorm parents at USDS unituntil closing in 1984. Marionworked for Dan and RoseAsche at the Frosty Shop inScotland, later leasing on

their own until retiring in1990. She cared for her hus-band after his stroke in 1990until his death in 2002.

Marian is survived by herson, Perry of Olivet, SD.

Marian was preceded indeath by her parents, Jasperand Mary, her husband,Everet and son, Rick.

Paul Matthew Bainbridgewas born on Sunday, January10, 1926 to Matthew andMary (Plattner) Bainbridge inScotland, South Dakota. Hegraduated Scotland High

School in 1943 where he wasrecognized as an “ideal stu-dent” and served as the bandPresident as well as playingthe French horn. On Septem-ber 4, 1948, Paul was unitedin marriage to Eunice Nelsonin Scotland.

Agriculture was Paul’spassion and heritage; he tookpride in farming the land hisancestors homesteaded. Atone point during Paul’s farm-ing career, he and his late sonTom, who farmed with him,received a certificate recog-nizing the Bainbridge farm asa quasquicentennial familyfarm, or a farm that has beenin the family 125 years. Hewas a DeKalb corn seeddealer and served on the BonHomme Co. Soil Conservationboard for 28 years. His lovefor the land was recognizedby others and resulted in hisbeing the recipient of theWNAX Farmer of the DayAward and the Bon HommeCounty Conservation DistrictEndowment Award.

When not in the fields,Paul was active in the Inde-pendent order of the Odd Fel-lows (IOOF), a globalbenevolent fraternal serviceorganization, served on theadvisory board for he Scot-land Living Center (nowknown as the Scotland GoodSamaritan Society), and helda leadership position in theScotland Historical Society.He was also very involvedwith the Presbyterian Churchin Scotland and served inmany positions throughoutthe years. Paul was a veryeasygoing man blessed with asense of humor. He could befound playing practical jokeson his neighboring farmerfriends or bowling team mem-bers, as he bowled at theRecreation Bar and BowlingAlley in Scotland for manyyears.

Paul passed away on Sat-urday, January 24, 2015 at theGood Samaritan Society ofScotland having attained theage of 89 years and 14 days.

He is survived and re-membered by his three chil-dren: Bob (Roseann)Bainbridge of Grand Junction,CO, June Bainbridge ofFlagstaff, AZ, and Kay (Mike)Smidt of Menno; grandchil-dren: Vanessa Jones, LoganSmidt, and Elisa Bainbridge;and great-grandson IzaacRichards.

He was preceded in deathby his wife Eunice, his par-ents, son Tom, and sisterKathleen Nelson.
