CLOUD: Quatre mélodies de Ronsard • Four Songs of the Heart • De Amor Oscuro • Three Songs from Gleanings • Três Canções • Four Sonnets by Pablo Neruda (Set 2) • Songs of Need and Desire

The debut recital of seven vocal works by Judith Cloud. Composed between 2006 and 2008, the songs are varied and colorful, showcasing texts by Pablo Neruda, Pierre Ronsard, Betty Andrews, Kathleen Raine, Elizabeth Bishop, Perry Brass, and contemporary Spanish and Brazilian poets. Cloud’s gift for vocal writing originates out of her own rich experiences as an accomplished mezzo-soprano soloist. Highlights of her career include a performance of the Brahms Neueliebeslieder Waltzer with the acclaimed radio program St. Paul Sunday Morning, as well as soloist for the American premiere performance of Michael Tippett’s A Child of Our Time with the Winston-Salem Symphony.

POSADAS: Oscuro abismo de llanto y de ternura (2009) • Nebmaat (2008) • Cripsis (2007) • Glossopoeia (2009)

Due to the style in which he combines his sonic material, Alberto Posadas’ compatriots often refer to his music as “Francophile.” Beyond the Pyrenees and in Francophone countries, the opposite is true: there, he is viewed as a genuinely Spanish composer due to the power and aplomb that emanate from his transparent masses of sound. Posadas has been featured at the Festival d’Automne in Paris, Agora Festival (IRCAM), Strasbourg’s MUSICA, and Brussels’ Ars Musica.

“A thing of miniature beauty.” — The Wire

“Kent’s solo work is characterized by a clear knowledge of modern classical music and a very lyrical, often cinematic set of composition

principles.” — Boomkat

Perhaps best known as an original member of cello-rock pioneers Rasputina, Julia Kent has toured & recorded with Antony & The Johnsons, Rufus Wainwright, Devendra Banhart, Angels of Light, and Mi & Lau. Made in New York City and inspired by the intersections between the natural world and the human world, Green and Grey continues Kent’s solo career as a creator of highly personal music. Using looped and layered cello, electronics, and recordings of natural sounds, she explores the melding of the technological and the organic, the

patterns and repetitions that exist in nature and are mirrored in human creations, and the complexity and fragility of our relationships with one another and with the natural world.

“A great concert leaves you with some glimpse of why you’re alive. That’s the experience Dubravka Tomsic brought to Symphony Hall Sunday afternoon. Her playing was emotional, searching, sublime, and profoundly moving … a transcendental performance.” — Boston Globe

Touring the US in April 2011, with stops at the Grand Rapids Symphony, San Francisco Performances, Boston Celebrity Series, Union College Concert Series, Huntsville Chamber Music Guild Celebrity Series, and the Steinway Society in San José. Highlights of recent seasons include several performances with the Boston Symphony under both Seiji Ozawa and Bernard Haitink at Symphony Hall and Carnegie Hall, a solo recital at the Tanglewood Festival, the Pasadena Symphony under Jorge Mester, the Mexico City Philharmonic and recitals in Portland, Rockport, and at New York’s Alice Tully Hall.

“There are knowledgeable music lovers who will tell you there is simply no pianist around today like Dubravka Tomsic, and they are right. You can attend piano recitals religiously and not hear anyone who inhabits music with her kind of absolute technical control or deep understanding of what music can say to the human spirit.” — Chicago Tribune

Celebrated Slovenian pianist Dubravka Tomsic enjoys “something of a cult status among pianophiles” (Gramophone), with performances that convey “heroic power and Olympian vision” (LA Times). The only protégé of legendary pianist Artur Rubinstein, who considered her “a perfect and marvelous pianist,” she gave her first public recital at age five and later embarked on an international career that took her to all five continents, performing more than 4,000 concerts to date.

BEETHOVEN: Symphony No. 1 in C, Op. 21 • Symphony No. 5 in C minor, Op. 67

Over the last 20 years, Dutch conductor Jan Willem de Vriend has, with enormous passion and enthusiasm, immersed himself in the life and work of Ludwig van Beethoven. Now, de Vriend believes that he is ready to release this series of Beethoven’s symphonies! On this new Hybrid SACD, he is joined by the highly-regarded Netherlands Symphony Orchestra.

BEETHOVEN: Cello Sonata in E-flat (from Kleinheinz: String Trio, Op. 3) • Works for mandolin and piano (arr. Berger)

After in-depth studies, cellist Julius Berger came to the conclusion that the arrangement of the String Trio Op. 3 of 1794 was created and published under the composer’s own eyes, in Beethoven’s immediate sphere of influence. The quality of the work—and of Beethoven—is apparent in this arrangement, which is magnificently played by Berger and Gallardo. For the mandolin sonatas, the original key of C minor is used in the arrangement for piano and violoncello, arranged by Berger. “Beethoven at his most elegant, they are miniature, refulgent jewels”—that was the opinion of Steven Isserlis, and it is also the opinion of Berger himself!

VILLA-LOBOS: Suite populaire brésilienne • Chôros No. 1 • Préludes • Études for Guitar

The generation of Brazilian artists who came to prominence in the 1900s had to develop a national artistic conscience, and Heitor Villa-Lobos (1887–1959) was the most universally acclaimed of them. Born in Rio de Janeiro, he was the son of an intellectual who taught him to play the cello. After his father’s death, young Heitor learned to play the guitar, an instrument associated with the lower ranks of society. In 1906 he embarked on a legendary trip to the north, meeting the humble people and intuitively absorbing their habits and rich musical folklore. Later in life, he would exaggerate facts from this trip, inspired by the scientific expeditions that were taking place at the same time. Back to Rio in 1910, he married a pianist and tried (unsuccessfully) to catch up with his musical education as a ‘serious’ composer while working as a free-lance musician, playing at the opera house at night and in cafés during the day. His earliest known guitar works, which now comprise the Suite populaire brésilienne, belong to this period.

Rex Lawson: pianola

STRAVINSKY: The Rite of Spring • Petrushka

On the face of it, it seems strange that a worldly, successful composer like Stravinsky should lock himself away for hours in a small studio and arrange his own music for the pianola. Everyone knows, don’t they, that pianolas sound like beat-up old honky-tonks, drowning any musical inspiration with the squeaking of their gears and the wheezing of their pedals. Well, have we got news for you! Pianolas don’t always play with an inexorable tempo and at triple forte; they can and should sound as musically sensitive as any other instrument, and Stravinsky himself enjoyed playing them. As you listen to Petrushka and The Rite of Spring, you may just change your mind about this frequently and unjustly maligned musical instrument.

“A lustrous mezzo-soprano.” — The Sunday Times

“Ann Martin-Davis’ playing shines with brilliance.” — BBC Music magazine

Armed with only a box of scores, it has taken two years to trace the late composer Peter Pope and his family. Pope was born in 1917 and studied at the Royal College of Music with John Ireland. He won a traveling scholarship to study with Nadia Boulanger in Paris, but his studies were cut short by the German invasion of Paris. Pope narrowly escaped death, fleeing France on a bicycle through Northern Spain. After service in the Royal Army Medical Corps, Pope’s piano quartet received a rave review in The Times and Augeners offered to publish anything he wrote, but instead he met and married Noreen, a member of the Exclusive Brethren (more extreme than the Plymouth brethren) who announced that music was to be “cancelled.” Pope didn’t write another note until the sect was disbanded in 1971.

“An extremely expressive cellist with a big tone, a fabulous technique, and a winning interpretation.” — All Music Guide

“Always a pleasure to welcome a new CD from Raphael Wallfisch, for this fine artist is so consistently admirable.” — International Record Review

It appears to have been Antonio Stradivari who was responsible for the standardization of the dimensions of the “modern” cello, in the first decade of the 18th century. As its popularity and status grew, the instrument was well fitted to play a significant role in the transition from the Classical to the Romantic, the period represented by the music on this disc. Intriguingly, the life and work of all four of these composers were touched by the presence of a fifth—Mozart.

“Crisp articulation, splendidly agile fingerwork, and strong sense of purpose.” — International Record Review

Handel’s overtures had an independent life almost from their inception, and the practice of performing them on keyboard instruments has a similarly long pedigree, beginning with a number of transcriptions made by the composer himself. Keyboard specialist John Kitchen evokes Handel’s orchestral palette in the welter of timbres and colors he summons forth from Jacob Kirckman’s 1755 harpsichord, a classic instrument from the very apex of the English harpsichord building.

Alexei Lubimov: piano

BEETHOVEN: Piano Sonata No. 30, Op. 109 • Piano Sonata No. 31, Op. 110 • Piano Sonata No. 32, Op. 111

“Breathtaking.” — The Independent

“A beautiful recital by a master pianist.” — BBC Music magazine

In 2010, Zig-Zag Territoires released Alexei Lubimov’s recording of the Schubert Impromptus on two period pianos (Schanz and Müller), which was awarded a CHOC Award and received HHHHH from BBC Music magazine. During the same recording session, Lubimov took on the last three sonatas of Beethoven! Lubimov belongs to the great Russian tradition of pianists such as Richter and Gilels, as well as to the generation of Early Music pioneers that includes Gustav Leonhardt and the Kuijken brothers. He is a leading interpreter of such modern composers as Denisov, Schnittke, Silvestrov, and Arvo Pärt.

This recording of choral works for Passiontide and Easter continues to follow the Dresden Kreuzchor through the Church year. The CD series presents works that have long featured in the Kreuzkirche’s liturgical celebration of these festivals—the choir’s “domestic repertoire,” so to speak. Thousands flock to these evening services every fortnight, to enjoy the centuries-old tradition in which boys’ voices blend anew into the unique and homogeneous sound of choral singing. Passion and Easter represent the strongest possible contrast between crucifixion and resurrection, offering the listener an impressive sweep of inseparably linked musical and spiritual content. As the repertoire ranges from the Middle Ages to modern times, all the choir’s tonal potential is exploited to its utmost.

Musica Antiqua Köln

MEISTER: Sonata No. 2 in D minor • Sonata No. 4 in E minor • Sonata No. 5 in C • Sonata No. 6 in A minor • Sonata No. 10 in C minor • Sonata No. 11 in D

A new recording from Musica Antiqua Köln? Wasn’t this legendary ensemble disbanded years ago? Yes, but one thing at a time…

The ensemble was founded in 1973, and just five years later was recording exclusively for Archiv (Deutsche Grammophon) under the artistic direction of Reinhard Goebel. By the end of the 1980s, the group had made about 30 recordings for the label, with emphasis on faithful interpretations of unknown masterpieces that are today firmly established as benchmark recordings. After the year 2000, however, things cooled down and the public taste may have wanted more thrills than could be offered by esoteric Pachelbel sonatas and the like. After three artistically rewarding decades, the ensemble was finally dissolved in 2006.

What most observers overlooked, however, was a tape in the WDR archives labeled: “Johann Friedrich Meister, Il giardino del piacere, Musica Antiqua Köln, 2004.” And lo and behold, it really was the ensemble’s very last recording! This CD represents the last word—and a spectacular conclusion—to the MAK discography.

RAMEAU (tr. Hesse): Les Surprises de l’Amour (Adonis, Anacréon, La Lyre Enchantée, Sibaris)

Alpha continues its exploration of the baroque repertoire in this recording of a transcription by Hesse of Rameau’s Surprises de l’Amour. These transcriptions (for two viols and harpsichord) cover the entire sound range of the viols. A virtuoso viol player, Hesse was also a pupil of Marin Marais and Forqueray senior, simultaneously. He achieved this feat by resorting to a false name and was exposed during a musical joust organized by the two masters, both vaunting the qualities of an outstanding pupil.

Lucien DUROSOIRLe Balcon

Sequenza 9.3/Quatuor Diotima/Trio Hoboken/Quintette Aquilon

DUROSOIR: Le Balcon • Sonnet à un enfant • Idylle • Trilogie: Improvisation, Maîade, Divertissement • Trio in B minor • Berceuse

Served by very high-level interpreters, the fourth volume in this series underlines and strengthens the public’s growing interest in this previously unpublished repertoire. This new volume reveals a Lucien Durosoir somewhere between impressionism and modernism, confirming the genius of his very atypical language. Blending in with the shimmering colors of Le Balcon for choir and string quintet, we find a tender lullaby, a virtuoso trilogy for piano and cello, and an Idylle in which music becomes poetry.

J.S. BACHConcertos with Diverse Instruments, Vol. 5

Café Zimmermann/Pablo Valetti: concertmaster

J.S. BACH: Overture No. 3 in D, BWV 1068 • Harpsichord Concerto in F minor, BWV 1056 • Brandenburg Concerto No. 6 in B-flat, BWV 1051 • Concerto for 3 Harpsichords in D minor, BWV 1063

Bach’s suites and concertos have long been part of concert repertoires. It is, however, interesting to mentally replace their first executions in the context of the time, so different from what we see on present-day stages. Apart from at the courts, whatever their size, there were no permanent orchestras in Bach’s time and age. Café Zimmermann has brilliantly recreated the spirit of these orchestras, allowing each musician (chosen among the best on the European baroque scene) to express himself. The penultimate opus in this outstanding series, this is the first time we hear Café Zimmermann in such a large formation, and we discover a Bach more alive than ever!

MOSSO: Suite per organo • Liber Organi • Tre pezzi per armonium su temi di Hindemith • HINDEMITH: Organ Sonata No. 1

Following the recent release of Marco Enrico Bossi organ works (welcomed with great enthusiasm by the specialized press), Tactus now presents the world premiere of three works for organ by another 20th century composer, almost totally unknown. Born in France in 1931, at age eight Carlo Mosso concluded his musical studies in Turin, where he enjoyed the teaching of the great Massimo Mila. This CD presents two of the four works Mosso dedicated to organ music, and the “Tre Pezzi” (Three Pieces) based on the Hindemith melodies initially composed for harmonium.

These compositions by the young Toscanini are surrounded by a series of enchanting musical pages by Ildebrando Pizzetti (three of them based on Petrarca’s sonets, and the other on the famous poem “I pastori” by Gabriele D’Annunzio), Giovanni Bottesini, Gustavo Campanini, and Giusto Dacci.

LE JEUNE: Dix Pseaumes de David (Ten Psalms of David)

When publishing his Ten Psalms of David in 1564, Claude Le Jeune was still a young musician in his thirties; we know his work from this time solely through a few chansons included in two collective anthologies. This first personal volume clearly identifies him as a Huguenot composer. The four-part texture with frequent homorhythmic passages and the free alternation of long and short syllables clearly belong to the world of protestant psalmody. Yet in numerous passages, the richness of the rhythmic palette and the abundance of polyphony originate from within this framework: the rhythmic values are chosen to illustrate both words and ideas. Although a youthful work, the depth and sincerity of construction of the Ten Psalms are as touching as the greatness of their creator’s vision is impressive. Their employment of modes and rhythm clearly announce certain essential features that would become the hallmark of his mature masterpieces.

HAYDN: Symphony No. 82 in C “The Bear” • Symphony No. 86 in D • LEBRUN: Concerto in C

The courts of Mannheim and Esterházy possessed the best orchestras and instrumental soloists that were available at the end of the 18th century. Paris, with its various concert societies and large orchestras, had become an important venue for such artists and especially for musicians who belonged to the new style. Haydn’s symphonies and concertos by virtuosi such as Lebrun enjoyed considerable success there; what is more, it was in Paris that the works performed here first appeared in print.

British composer John Gardner (b. 1917) has been astonishingly prolific, writing 249 opus numbers in his 60-year career as composer, conductor, and teacher. His music—basically tonal and always impeccably crafted—is characterized by charm, grace, and humor. Gardner’s musical fingerprints come from his love of jazz, Renaissance, and Baroque procedures and his mastery of imitative counterpoint. He generally uses established musical forms but invests them with a quirky and distinctive harmonic idiom. This CD explores his rich output for brass and organ, from the elegant Theme and Variations, Op. 7, of 1951 to the lusty Five Dances for Organ, Op. 179, written in 1988.

The piano works of Charles-Valentin Alkan (1813–88) are among the most demanding ever written, but they can also gleam with a fierce joy and twinkle with mischievous humor, so it’s hardly surprising to find his works for piano duet bubbling with freewheeling energy. The two works for pedal piano—transcribed here for two pianos by Roger Smalley—show a more solemn side to this devoutly religious composer, though they also have their own charge of excitement and Alkan’s trademark eccentric originality.

BEETHOVEN: Viola Sonata in A (fragment) • Horn Sonata, Op. 17 (arr. Silverthorne) • Notturno, Op. 42 (arr. Kleinheinz) • Grand Duo in E-flat (Septet), Op. 20 (arr. Hermann)

Although a violist himself, Beethoven left nothing for the viola except for the fragment of a sonata recorded here for the first time. So his contemporaries and successors have “helped” him fill the gaps—it was Karl Xaver Kleinheinz (1765–1832) who arranged the String Trio, Op. 8, gaining Beethoven’s reluctant approval; a later musician, Friedrich Hermann (1828–1907), transformed the Septet, Op. 20 into an ambitious viola sonata. And now Paul Silverthorne, Principal Viola of the London Symphony Orchestra, expands the repertoire with his own transcription of the Horn Sonata, Op. 17.

SINIGAGLIA: Violin Sonata, Op. 44 • Romanza for cello & piano, Op. 16, No. 1 • Cavatina for violin & piano, Op. 1, No. 1 • Cello Sonata, Op. 41

Sinigaglia, born in Turin in 1868, was a friend of Brahms in Vienna and a student of Dvorák in Prague, applying their classical techniques to the inspiration he found in Italian folksong; his music is marked by strong melodies and a sophisticated use of harmony. Championed by musicians of the standing of Barbirolli, Furtwängler, Kreisler, Stokowski, and Toscanini, he was also a famous mountaineer, with two first climbs in the Dolomites to his credit. Sinigaglia, who was Jewish, died in Turin in 1944 as he was being arrested, at age 75, by the occupying Nazi forces. His tuneful chamber music bears witness to the happy life that preceded that tragic end.

Vineta Sareika, Hrachya Avanesyan, Nikita Boriso-Glebsky, Lorenzo Gatto, Yossif Ivanov, Jolente De Maeyer, Harriet Langley: violins/Royal Philharmonic Orchestra of Liège/Patrick Davin: conductor

VIEUXTEMPS: Violin Concerto No. 1 in E, Op. 10 • Violin Concerto No. 2 in F-sharp minor, Op. 19 • Violin Concerto No. 3 in A, Op. 25 • Violin Concerto No. 4 in D minor, Op. 31 • Violin Concerto No. 5 in A minor, Op. 37 • Violin Concerto No. 6 in G, Op. 47 • Violin Concerto No. 7 in A minor, Op. 49

Producing all of Vieuxtemps’ seven violin concertos is quite an undertaking. Too much for a single person? It may be. For Augustin Dumay, master teacher-in-residence at the Chapelle Musicale Reine Elisabeth, it was the opportunity to pay tribute to the vitality of the Franco-Belgian school, the substance of which he learnt through his master Arthur Grumiaux. The task was taken up by seven young virtuosos he has taught, several of whom have already distinguished themselves in major international competitions.

Ferdinand RIESComplete Flute Quartets

Oxalys/Toon Fret: flute/Shirly Laub: violin/Elisabeth Smalt: viola/Martijn Vink: cello

RIES: 3 Flute Quartets WoO 35 • 3 Flute Quartets, Op. 145

The magnificent Oxalys ensemble, led by Toon Fret at the flute, puts forward an absolute discovery: the complete quartets with flute by Ferdinand Ries, the great contemporary of Beethoven. One of the most famous musicians of his time, Ries combines classical contours with romantic elements in an elegant, spiritual fashion that can be considered his trademark. Supporting the voluble parts for the flute, he wrote dense and inventive scores for the strings. A true declaration of love for chamber music!

Frédéric CHOPIN Evgeni Bozhanov Recital

Evgeni Bozhanov: piano

CHOPIN: Barcarolle in F-sharp, Op. 60 • Polonaise No. 2 in F-flat, Op. 71 • Impromptu in G-flat, Op. 51 • Waltz in A-flat, Op. 64, No. 3 • Grande Valse Nouvelle in A-flat, Op. 42 • Ballade in A-flat, Op. 47 • Sonata No. 3 in B minor, Op. 58

Recorded in the mythical Salle de Musique at La-Chaux-de-Fonds in Switzerland, this is the first solo recital of Evgeni Bozhanov, the Bulgarian pianist who has been shaking the piano world for over a year. At the major international competitions in which he has taken part since 2009, always reaching the finals, nobody remained indifferent—neither jury members nor the public—to this exceptionally gifted pianist, seated in a low position and drawing unbelievable sounds from his piano. Whether in Warsaw (Chopin 2010), Fort Worth (Van Cliburn 2009), or Brussels (Queen Elisabeth 2010), he produced a resolutely personal sound, notably in Chopin.
