This book is intended to revisit the classic paintings and iconic photographs that stand out to us, the ones we create in our mind’s eye when they are described. These images have stayed with us for reasons we sometimes cannot comprehend, the mystery or joy or horror encapsulated by these subjects renders them equally beautiful.

Artists of the brush and pen have made timeless picto-real or representative artistic portraits for centuries. Only in the last half century or so has the medium of photography entered the same realm of capturing one’s spirit in a single image.

Some of the re-creations in the following pages are meant to simulate the original closely, while others are intended to bring the image into the realm of modernity. Regardless, I have changed elements of every photograph and painting in my re-visiting of them. Whether it means bringing the original into color, changing it to black and white, or altering the race or gender of the subject, I have chosen these images deliberatly and made their changes with intent.

Hopefully these alterations will make the reader think, analyze, and challenge the perception of the originals and re-productions they will find in this book. Enjoy.
