Different kinds of cutting tools and their applications

Different types of materials ranging from high carbon steel to ceramics and diamonds are used as

cutting tools in the metalworking industry. So it's important to know the differences among each

tool and its applications in this modern era. Various tool manufacturers assign many names and

numbers to their products. Though many of them appear similar, their applications may be entirely

different.

The most common error while selecting tool is calculating monetary savings based on lowest cost

per tool, rather than on maximied productivity and extended tool life. ! machinist or an engineer

must have information about "

• Shape of starting and finished part

• #ardness of the workpiece

• Tensile strength of the machine

• $aterial's abrasiveness

• %ower and speed capacity of the cutting tool

  !

n

ideal cutting tool material must possess the following characteristics "

• #igh Temperature stability

• &esistance against wear and tear

• mpact resistant

• (hemically inert to work material and cutting fluid

)o single cutting tool incorporates all these *ualities. nstead trade+offs occur among the various

tool materials. very new and evolving tool development has an application where it will provide

superior performance over others. The optimum tool is not necessarily the least or the most

expensive , and it is not always the same tool that was used for the -ob last time. The best tool is the

one that has been carefully chosen to get the -ob done *uickly, efficiently and economically.

The general classification and the applications of each cutting tool is listed here "

1. Alligator Shear :

• !lso known as a crocodile or lever shear with a hinged -aw and powered by a flywheel or

hydraulic cylinder.

•They are sued for cutting long metal stock or scrap, generally where accuracy is not so

important.

• t is often used with large metal shredders to clean or prepare the scrap for shredding.

2. Abrasive Saw :

• !lso known as cut+off saw or metal+chop saw.

• t is specifically used to cut hard materials such as metals.

• %ortable abrasive saws have made site -obs *uite easier.

3. Bandsaw :

• t uses blades consisting of continuous band of metal with teeth along one edge to cut

various workpieces.

• andsaw helps in uniform cutting as it has evenly distributed teeth load.

• They are used in cutting meat, metals and even hard timbers.

4. Diaond Saw :

• ! variety of diamond saw blades like circular diamond blades, drills and surface grinding

wheels are used in construction work.

• They are used in cutting stone, cobalt, asphalt, bricks, glass in the construction industry.

• Diamond saw tools are sued in cutting semiconductor materials in T industry and cutting

gemstones like diamonds in the gem industry.

!. "acksaw :

• ! fine+toothed saw for cutting metal.

!lso used in cutting plastic and wood. /or eg. %lumbers and electricians often use them tocut pipes and plastics.
