Classification of MonotheismBy: His Eminence Shaykh Abdul-Aziz Bin Abdillah Bin Baz [Died. 1420H]

Translated By: Abu Sulaymaan Muhammad Ibn Baker

    Question:

In Relation to Tawheed1 being classified into three categories, Is there any

    evidence to that?

    Response:

This (matter) is derived from (process of) investigation. On the basis that the Ulama

have examined what has came forth from textual evidences of the Book of Allah & the

Sunnah of His Messenger (sallahu alayhi wa sallam) what is apparent to them in this

manner. Some of the Scholars have added a forth category being the Tawheed of

Adherence (i.e. to the Prophet sallahu alayhi wa sallam), all of this is due to examination.

So there is no question that whoever reflects upon the Noble Quran will discover withinits verses enjoining sincerity in worship of Allah Alone this here is Tawheed of Divinity

    (Worship).

Likewise he will discover verses indicating that Allah is Ar-Razzaq (The All-Sustainer), Al-

Khaliq (The Creator), Al-Mudabir (The One Who governs all occurrences in the creation).

This here is the Tawheed Rububiyah2 (Lordship) in which the Polytheist affirm rather

this doesnt gain them entre into Islam.

Similarly he would discover other verses indicating that The Most Beautiful Names &

Magnificent Qualities belongs to Allah, that Allah has no likeness, equivalent. this here isTawheed Asmaa wa Sifaat (Names & Qualities) in which the Innovators like the

Jahmiyah, Mutazilah, Mushabihah as well as those who traverse upon there path (of

    misguidance).

1Translators Notes: Meaning to single out Allah Alone by way of His Lordship, Worship, as well as His Names & Qualities.

2Translators Notes: Meaning Allahs Actions. See the book Aqeedah Ahlu-Sunnah wa Jamaah By Shaykh Muhammad Bin Salih Al

    Uthaymeen.

Additionally he will discover verses indicating to the duty of adhering to the Messenger

(sallahu alayhi wa sallam) as well as an obligation to reject whatever opposes the Prophet

legislation, this here is the Tawheed Mutabiah (Adherence to the Prophet).

Thus, this is the classification of Tawheed inevitably acquired by examination (of the text)

& adhering to the verses & studying to the Sunnah. So from that is the saying of Allah:

    QUTSR

You (Alone) we worship, & You (Alone) we ask for help (for each and everything).3

And Allah The All-Mighty & Sublime Says:

O Mankind! Worship you Lord (Allah), Who created you and those who where before

you so that you may become Al-Muttaqun (pious).4

And Allah The All-Mighty & Sublimes Says:

And your Ilah (God) is One Ilah (God Allah), La ilaha illa Huwa (there is none who has

the right to be worshipped but He), The Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.5

& Allah the One free of imperfection Says:

    3Al Fatiha 1:5

    4Al Baqarah 2:21

    5Al Baqarah 2:163

Allah bears witness that La ilaha illa Huwa (none has the right to be worshipped but

He), & the angels, and those having Knowledge (also give this witness); (He always)

maintains His creation in justice. La ilaha illa Huwa (none has the right to be worshipped

but He), the All-Mighty, the All-Wise.6

Allah the One free of imperfection Says:

And I (Allah) created not the jinn & mankind except that they should worship Me

(Alone). I seek not any provision from them (i.e. provision for themselves or for My

creatures) nor do I seek that they should feed Me (i.e. feed themselves, or My creatures).

Verily, Allah is the All-Provider Owner of Power, the Most Strong.7

Allah the One who is free of imperfection Says:

Indeed, you Lord is Allah, Who created the heavens & the earth in Six Days, then He

rose over (Istawa) the Throne (really in a manner that suits His Majesty). He brings the

night as a cover over the Day, seeking it rapidly, & (He created) the Sun, the Moon, the

Stars subjected to His Command. Surely, His is the Creation & Commandment. Blessed is

Allah, The Lord of the Alamin (mankind, jinn & all that exists)!8

Say (O Muhammad sallahu alayhi wa sallam): Who provides for you from the Sky & the

Earth? Or who owns Hearing & Sight? And who brings out the Living from the Dead &

brings out the Dead from the Living? And who disposes the affairs? They will say:

Allah Say: Will you not then be afraid of Allahs punishment (for setting up rivals in

    worship with Allah)?9

    & Allah Says:

    XWVUTSRQ

There is nothing like Him, & He is the All-Hearer, the All-Seer.10

& Allah The All-Mighty and Sublime states:

[Allah- the Self-Sufficient Master, Whom all creatures need (He neither eats nor drinks)].

& Allah The One free from imperfection Says:

    mihgfedcba`_^

Say (O Muhammad sallahu alayhi wa sallam) to Mankind: If you (really) love Allah, thenfollow me (is accept Islamic Monotheism, follow the Quran & the Sunnah) Allah will love

you & forgive you your sins.12

& Allah The One free from imperfection Says:

    LKJHGFEDCBA

    [ZYXWUTSRQPONM

Say: Obey Allah & obey the Messenger (sallahu alayhi wa sallam), but if you turn away,

he (Messenger Muhammad sallahu alayhi wa sallam) is only responsible for the duty

placed on him (i.e. to convey Allahs Message) & you for that placed on you. If you obey

him, you shall be on the right guidance. The Messengers duty is only to convey (the

Message) in a clear way (i.e. to preach in a plain way).13

And these verses in what was mentioned concerning the classification of Tawheed are

    abundant.

Where as among the Ahadeeth (Narrations of the Prophet):

The statement of Prophet (sallahu alayhi wa sallam) in the hadith of Muad (may Allah be

    pleased with him):

The Right over the slave is that Allah is worshipped while not associating anything with

    Him.14

    &

Whoever dies while calling on other that Allah (with Him) will be in the Fire.15

& the statement of Prophet (sallahu alayhi wa sallam) when asked by Jabril (Peace be

upon Him) concerning Islam He (sallahu alayhi wa sallam) responded:

That you worship Allah while not associating anything along Him (Allah), establish the

five daily prayers, & pay the obligatory Zakat.16

    &

Whosoever obeys Me has inevitably obeyed Allah and whoever disobeys Me, he has verily

    disobeyed Allah.17

    &

Everyone from my Ummah will be admitted into Jannah (Paradise) except he whorefuses, they asked, O Messenger of Allah who will refuse?

    He replied:

Whosoever obeys Me will be admitted into Jannah (Paradise) & whoever disobeys Me

then no doubt he has refused.18

And so the Ahadeeth (Narrations of the Prophet) in this area is abundant.

Shaykhul Islam Ibnu-Taymiyah (May Allah show mercy on him) had said:

The wording of Al-Ilah (the True Deity) is the one who is worshipped, obeyed. For He is

Al Mahluh (the One who is shown devoutness to) in which He is deserving by due right

to be worshipped (Alone). In a manner He deserves to be worshipped due to His

distinguishing Qualities which entail Him to be shown Love & Humbleness at the highest

    degree.

    He additionally stated:

The wording of Al Ilah (the true Deity) means the who is shown love & servitude in

which the hearts deify (i.e. worship) by way of Love & Humbleness for Allah Alone-,

displaying Humility, having dread (of Allahs chastisement), Hoping for Allahs Reward,

returning to Allah in repentance & compliance in times of hardship, beseeching Him

pertaining to important matters, having full confidence & reliance in Allahs ability to

    rectify your situations (i.e. Tawakul).

Seeking His sanctity, bringing about serenity caused by remembering Allah, finding ease

in having love for Allah, all of this can not exist unless by way of worshipping AllahAlone. For this reason the statement Laa Ilaha Illa Allah (None has the right be

worshipped in truth except Allah) is deemed Trustworthy ( a declaration of Speech &

Belief) more so than any other statement.

Whosoever follows this statement of Laa Ilaha Illa Allah follows & adheres to Allah Pure

Monotheism, the same message of all the messengers that were sent to there people- &

whoever despises this statement as a result they become enemies of it (the statement) as

well as its followers (who are upon Monotheism) , making them incur Allahs Hatred &

punishment. So consequently (this statement) is genuine (correct) then every matter, circumstance, & experience will be likewise. Whereas the servant is not being genuine

with it (the statement) as a result that will bind his knowledge & deeds to be

    corrupted.19

    In Conclusion

We beseech Allah to grant all the Muslims among those who make religious verdicts and

those who are judged upon success towards having a clear understanding of AllahsReligion while remaining steadfast upon that, advising (sincerely) for Allahs Pleasure.

Warning from whatever is in opposition of it (the Religion); Undoubtedly Allah is

protecting (over us) & capable of doing so.

And May Allah descend His Prayers & Salutations upon our Prophet Muhammad, His

family, as well as all of His companions.
