Compare how structures and function vary between the six kingdoms (archaebacteria, eubacteria, protists, fungi, plants,

and animals).

characteristics.

The science of describing, classifying, and naming living things is called TAXONOMY.

Aristotle (late 300’s B.C.) Classified based on air, land, or water dwellers.

Before the 1600s Two groups: plants and animals.

Carolus Linnaeus Founded taxonomy in the 1700s.

He sorted things based on their shape and structure.

First to use binomial nomenclature

Today Eight-level system to classify living things.

When a scientist wants to classify an organism, he/she must first determine the organism’s DOMAIN.

There are currently three domains: Archaea Bacteria Eukarya

Once placed in the correct domain, the kingdom is determined.

The scientist then determines the phylum, class, order, family, genus, and species of the organism IN THAT ORDER.

Binomial Nomenclature Two word naming system used to create scientific names

First word is the genus (capitalized)

Second word is the species (not capitalized)

Using scientific names eliminates confusion that may happen with

common names!

Into what kingdom would each of the following be classified:

a) unicellular prokaryotes that live in dustb) unicellular eukaryotes that live in pond waterc) multicellular eukaryotes that live all over the planet and consume foodd) unicellular prokaryotes that live in volcanic ash and other inhospitable environments

e) multicellular eukaryotes that have cell walls and are heterotrophic f) multicullular eukaryotes that have cell walls and are autotrophic

Would you expect an animal with the name Rania concolor to look similar to

a mountain lion? Why or why not?
