CHARTER TOWNSHIP OF SOUTH HAVENCOLUMBIA TOWNSHIP RESIDENTSJoin me and express your opinion on wage increases for Township officials
Over the past two weeks I informed you in this Reminder that Columbia Township Board member wage increases were outrageous and an abuse of the public trust placed in these elected Township officials! The Board has taken extreme advantage of the hard-working taxpayers of Columbia Township to line their own pockets with your hard-earned tax dollars. Board members can no longer be trusted! It is now time for the hard-working taxpayers of Columbia Township to demand these wage increases be reversed! Express your opposition to these wage increases by sending a note to the Board at:
Columbia Township BoardPO Box 323
Grand Junction, Michigan 49056-0323You can also express your opposition by calling the Township at (269)–434-6227 and leaving a message.Supervisor Linda Norton, Clerk Christy Case, Treasurer Rhonda Collins lined their pockets with the following annual wage increases:
Supervisor $15,485 - a 22% increase of $2,753 Clerk $19,485 - a 36% increase of $5,080Treasurer $19,002 - a 8% increase of $1,392
In addition, the Board members increased the Deputy Clerk and Deputy Treasurer wages as follows:Deputy Clerk $4,500 - a 730% increase of $3,958Deputy Treas. $3,000 - a 454% increase of $2,458
As Township residents should be aware, these Board member, Deputy Clerk and Deputy Treasurer positions are part-time, public service positions not full-time employment positions! It is appalling that these wage increases were approved by the Board as residents of Columbia Township were complying with Michigan Governor Whitmer’s COVID-19 pandemic ‘Stay Home, Stay Safe’ executive order, concerned about their continued employment and the possibility of local food shortages.

On Monday, February 17th, the English 12, America at War and AP U.S. History classes traveled to Farmington Hills to visit the Holocaust Memorial Center. The field trip, designed to help each class better understand the history leading up to the Holocaust and the chain of events that led to the Final Solution, was funded by a grant obtained through a Facing History Professional Development completed by teacher Marc Kline. The grant covered one-hundred percent of the transportation cost, saving roughly $20.00 per student.
The student experience started with a presentation led by Holocaust survivor Rene Lichtman. Mr. Lichtman, born in Poland in 1937, shared his story of having to hide as a young boy with a Catholic married couple on a family farm just outside of Paris in the village of Le Vert Galante. The students listened intently as Mr. Lichtman shared how hard it was to overcome something no child could ever understand. He talked to the students about persevering during hard times and standing up against hate.
The second part of the field trip consisted of an hour tour led by a docent, specifically trained to educate visitors on the history of the Jewish experience and the history surrounding the Holocaust. While taking the tour, students were instructed to pay particular attention to the bystanders and upstanders of this time. The museum provided not only written artifacts to read, but plenty of authentic visuals that vividly illustrated the peril of the Jewish people during this time.
The students of Gobles High School thank the Holocaust Memorial Museum for making this opportunity available to them.
