Classifying StructuresObjectives:

 • Given the definitions of sheltering and non-sheltering

structures, students will be able to differentiate types of structures into sheltering and non-sheltering structures categories to 85% accuracy

• Given the definitions of non-sheltering categories: directing,

transporting, containing, and supporting, students will be able to categorize a set of non-sheltering structures into appropriate sub-categories: directing, transporting, containing, and supporting to 85% accuracy.

• Given a set of structures that can be classified as two or

more categories, students will be able to recognize and identify the main purpose of a structure to 85% accuracy.

Supporting

• Designed to hold things up.

Examples:

Roads, bridges, towers, foundations

Multi-function Structures• What happens when structures can be

classified as many types of structures?

Example: Railroad • Supporting: the underlayment is supportive

of the weight of the train• Directing: the tracks direct the trains

movement• Transporting: the boxcars are moving

materials or people
