Classroom ProceduresWhy do we have procedures?

A procedure is a way that we do things. To do things right we have to follow some simple

procedures, for example: To place a phone call, we need to enter numbers in the

right order. To bake a delicious dessert, we need to follow the

steps in the recipe. So, to be successful in learning, we need to

follow some simple procedures.

Entering The ClassroomThe bell doesn’t start the class.Mrs. Jones doesn’t start the class.YOU start the class.

• Make sure you have all necessary materials for the class.

• Enter the classroom quietly. • Immediately upon entering the room- drop your

attendance clip into the red wall pocket with your class number on it.

• Turn in homework, if necessary (place in red wall pocket).

• Go directly to your assigned seat. • Immediately begin bellwork (this will usually be reading

but check daily to make sure).

During Instruction• Listen to the teacher with full attention. • No pencil sharpening, talking, or whispering. • Ask permission to speak by raising your hand. • Ask questions related to the subject. Other

questions which are not related to the subject can be asked after instruction.

• After instruction, make sure you understand the lesson. If not, ask questions by mentioning which part you didn’t understand.

While You Are Working• Make sure you read or listen to the directions about your

work and understand them.

• If you didn’t understand- ask help from other students sitting around you. (Ask 3 before me.) If they also don’t understand, ask me to explain it.

• If you are asked to help, be polite and kind and offer your best assistance.

• Talking to each other should be no louder than a whisper. The person sitting on the other side of the room should not be interrupted by your noise.

• Respect each other and be friendly.

• Use your time wisely. Put forth your best effort to finish your work on time.

Handouts• Handouts that you need to keep “forever” will be

copied on colored paper.• Always keep and file anything I give you on colored

paper in the appropriate place in your language arts notebook.

• Other papers not on colored paper can be discarded at the end of the six weeks.

• The best students aren’t necessarily the most intelligent students…but they are almost always the best organized students. They read their assignments, take good notes, keep their work organized, ask questions, and listen with focus.
