For many centuries, the Royal family has been the source of the British monarchy, passed down through each generation as is their birth right. Some people succeeded the throne unexpectedly, and others waited many years.
Queen VictoriaVictoria was born 24th May 1819, daughter of William VI in Kensington Palace, London. Following the death of her father on 20th June 1837, Victoria inherited the throne at age 18 and was coronated a year and 8 days later when she was titled Empress of India. Victoria married Albert of Saxe-Coburg and Gotha (later titled Prince Consort), who was just three months younger, on 10th February 1840 and they had 9 children. After Albert’s death on 14th December 1861, Victoria moved away to Balmoral castle where she remained for forty years. Albert was buried in Frogmore Gardens. Victoria reigned for many years until her death, 22nd January 1901.
Edward VIIEdward VII was Victoria’s firstborn son and was born 9th November 1841, in Buckingham Palace. After his mother’s long reign of 63 years, Edward inherited the throne in 1901, aged 58. Edward married Alexandra of Denmark in 1863 and they had 6 children. Edward reigned from 1901 to 1910 and died 6th May in 1910.
George VGeorge was born 3rd June 1865. He married Mary of Teck and lived on the Sandringham Estate in Norfolk. The unexpected death of his elder brother, Prince Albert Victor (who died from flu aged 28) in early 1892, put George directly in line for the throne and he was crowned at his coronation on 22nd June 1911. George died on 20th January 1936 aged 70. He was buried at Windsor Castle.
Edward VIIIAs immediate heir to the throne after his father, Edward VIII was the firstborn son of George and Mary, born on 23rd June 1894. He had 4 brothers and 1 sister. Edward succeeded the throne on 20th January 1936, after his father’s reign of 25 years, but chose to abdicate his Kingship through the preference of marrying a divorced woman, Wallis Simpson, and so his reign was over. His brother, George, succeeded him after a short reign of 10 months as Edward and Wallis had no heirs, and he died 28th May 1972, aged 77.
George VIGeorge was born 11th December 1895 and he married Elizabeth Bowes-Lyon in April 1923. His brother’s sudden abdication was big surprise to George and he found public speaking difficult due to his stuttering. George became King in December 1936 and reigned for 15 years. He died peacefully in his sleep on 6th February 1952.
Elizabeth IIBorn on 21st April 1926, Elizabeth grew up with her only sister in London and was privately educated at home. As a young child, Elizabeth was unable to pronounce her name properly so was nicknamed ‘Lilibet’, just as she would say. Elizabeth’s coronation was televised 2nd June 1953 where she and her husband, Prince Philip, were given new titles. Queen Elizabeth II lives in Buckingham Palace and has 4 children, 8 grandchildren and 5 great-grandchildren.
