  • 1Personal Statement and Letter of Intent

    The Architecture of the new millennium is seeing more of a need to simply create spaces and does not concern itself with the beauty of the experience of a space. There is a preoccupation with rentable square footage and a loss of thought as to how someone might move within it. Architectural design of spaces should always be respectful of the site on which it is to be placed, and also of the heritage of the surrounding community. The aim should always be to avoid the creation of buildings that respond purely to the architects ego and becomes inappropriate for the area. One can do so by using locally sourced materials, researching the site and being civil in terms of scale. The creation should also touch quite lightly on the ground as the land is forever changing as well as the needs of people. Using lighter materials, columns and changing little of [OLZP[LJHUHJOPL]L[OPZ;OLZWH[PHSKLZPNUZOV\SKHSZVWVY[YH`HWLYZVUHSP[`ZWLJPJ[V[OLJYLH[VYHUKLTIVK`HUPKLU[P[`ZPTPSHY[VHZPNUH[\YL When designing spaces, the impact it will impose on the people within the space, at present and in the future, must be a frequent thought. One must also be conscious of the fact that a space ZOV\SKUV[ZPTWS`IL^HSSZHUKHVVYI\[YH[OLYHUL_WLYPLUJL0U[OLZHTL^H`HUHY[PZ[JHUPU]VRLJLY[HPULTV[PVUZMYVTH]PL^LY^P[OIY\ZOZ[YVRLZHUKJVSV\YZV[VVJHUHUHYJOP[LJ[^P[O[OLJHYLM\SWSHUUPUNVMHZWHJL[OL\ZLVM[L_[\YLZHUKTH[LYPHSP[ `SPNO[X\HSP[`HUKZJHSL+PMMLYLU[]VS\TLZHUKWLYMVYH[PVUZPU^HSSZJHUPU\LUJLOV^WLVWSLTV]L^P[OPU[OLZWHJL Spaces should also serve a function; in a world where the population is ever increasing; no space should remain dormant and unused. Function must have an attractive component be it through scale, materiality or lighting. Without one, the space becomes purely a structure without soul. Attention needs to be paid to the developing times. Designs should be current by remaining up-to-date with new discoveries in both the construction technology and active design worlds. By keeping up with the new developments, an architect can serve the spaces created, the surrounds and those who inhabit the space to the best of their ability.     I am returning to complete my honours degree in architecture because I feel that there is much more I need to learn about construction and design methods (both new and old) as well as tak-PUNHK]HU[HNLVM[OL]HS\HISLRUV^SLKNLVMT`M\[\YLSLJ[\YLYZ>OLU0Z[HY[T`JHYLLY0^HU[[VILHUHYJOP[LJ[[OH[^PSSOH]LHILULJPHSHUKSHZ[PUNPTWHJ[VU[OL^VYSKILJH\ZLHM[LYHSSP[PZour buildings that we leave behind as our legacies.

    Like my predecessors, I would like to be someone who changed the way buildings were though out and planned, even if it is in a very small manor. I plan to research and experiment with the idea of a dynamic building. I am highly intrigued by the thought of a building being able to move and shift according to a persons needs and desires because I believe that we are not stag-nant in life. We are constantly growing into more developed beings, be it through technology or because of our surroundings, life is constantly changing for us and this leads to changes in V\YULLKZHUK^HU[Z)\PSKPUNZ[OH[HYLK`UHTPJHUKJ\Z[VTPHISLZLY]L[OPZPKLH]LY`^LSSVUL^V\SKUV[OH]L[VRLLWTV]PUNPUVYKLY[VUKHZOLS[LY[OH[KLSP]LYZ[OLYLX\PYLTLU[ZVM[OH[space in time. This is what I plan to develop and research in my following years of study and then ultimately to practice.

We were also tasked with choosing our own site. I decided that the most appropriate site for my intervention was an empty plot along Oxford Road, across from The Zone in Rosebank. The reason I thought it was most appropriate is because my intervention serves as a waiting area for members of the public using the Gautrain. ;OLJVUJLW[^HZLMVYLZJLUJL^OPJOTLHUZ[OH[0^HU[LK[V[OLI\PSKPUNto look and feel like it was growing from the underground station, up to the street level.

    This waiting areas structure is designed to be functional so that vendors can come set up a stall to sell their goods to those waiting, children could \ZL[OLMVYTHZHQ\UNSLN`THUKV[OLYZJHUUKHWSHJL[VZP[^VYRVYeven take a nap. There would also be direct access to the underground station from the structure.

The hotel was to explore scale and proportion on a pedestrian SL]LS;OL.YV\UKVVYOHK[VPUJVYWVYH[LHW\ISPJM\UJ[PVUZ\JOHZMVYTHS[YHKPUNHUKJHMt;OPZ^HZV\YYZ[T\S[PZ[VY`I\PSKPUNHUKHZZ\JOV\YYZ[L_WLYPLUJL^P[OKPZ[YPI\[PUNZLY]PJLZV]LYTHU`VVYZ

    The Concept behind my design is Engage. The meaning behind the con-cept comes from the idea of reaching out and connecting with the city and its people. The building must involve itself and participate with the city.

    Engage aims to intertwine with the daily lives of city goers and the structure of the city. To make the hotel mesh with the structure of the city, [OLWSHUUPUNVM[OLOV[LSVULHJOVVYPZZVTL^OH[PUHNYPKMVYTH[;OLYLwas also an idea of letting the public bond with the structure of the building. The shops form a bridge between public and private, and allow these two worlds to engage with one another. The hotel is also aimed at attracting commuters from the BRT station in Rissick Street into the hotel . The Engage Hotel aims to not only impact the city, but in turn be impact-ed by the city. It forms a relationship with the people on the streets as well as the layout of the city.

The design of the building had to be integrated with the urban design approach devel-VWLKPU[OLW\ISPJWHY[VM[OLWYVQLJ[;OLWYVNYHTPUJS\KLK!(JP]PJJVT-T\UP[`JLU[YLJS\IW\ISPJZWHJLZJVTTLYJPHSZWHJLZVMJLZHWHY[-ments, parking for bikes only and urban design framework with focus on: pedestrian network, bicycle network and public transport network.

    ;OLHPTVM[OL-PYLWYVQLJ[PZ[VJVTIPUL]HYPV\ZWYVNYHTZZ\JJLZZM\SS`on one site and also incorporate the mixed-use plot into a new urban de-sign framework. We need to try and make the Rosebank area user-friendlier to all demographics. I think that one of the main components missing from the area of Rosebank is a connection. This is why my concept is The Synapse. In the human brain, messages are transmitted from brain to body by means of countless neurons. The ac-tions are sent in the form of neurotransmitters from one neuron to the next, the bridge between these neurons is called a synapse.

    I would like my intervention on the site to improve the functioning of Rose-bank as a city-like area, where pedestrians, cyclists and motorists are able to travel; the surrounding sites become usable by the public and where [OLYLPZQ\Z[HNYLH[LYNLULYHSWYLZLUJLVMWLVWSLHUKJVTT\UP[ `

    Third Year - Commemorative TowerLink

    Students were to design a celebratory landmark structure to be built on the Library Lawns, Wits Braamfontein Campus. The structure is to mark the 100th year of the universities existence. It should be a place of orientation and a representation of contemporary architecture in South Africa. The tower must accommodate a student radio station studio, student affairs information centre, shaded seating, display walls, digital screen and a water feature.

It should represent the intricate complexity of our society.

    This is what my concept became, trying to create a free and somewhat organic building through its structur-al skeleton and needs. I started then exploring how one can suggest organic shapes through the incremental movement of a structure.

I would look at core design and also at having a void running the height of the building that would allow light to penetrate and illuminate the exhibition spaces, which will in turn illuminate people with knowledge.

The brief stipulated that we design a production studio for Moon Dog Productions that would serve as a catalyst towards attracting U\TLYV\ZV[OLYSTHUKWYVK\J[PVUPUK\Z[Y`WSH`LYZ;OLI\PSKPUNZOV\SKYL]VS]LHYV\UKWYVK\J[PVUJYLH[P]Land imaginative spaces. I plan to promote pedestrian activity, start a chain effect for the renovation of the existing buildings to allow for more public space, to intro-duce interaction between pedestrians and the building, to encourage urban regeneration, to decrease my inter-vention the closer to the street edge and to try and to create a response between building and the park across the road.
